Nobody Does It Better.......2007-01-03
For music of the 20's nobody does it better than George Olsen and his Orchestra. "A Precious Little Thing Called Love" is done so well. In fact his wife sings the chorus, Ethel Shutta, and if I am not mistaken sang the song "Broadway Baby", in the original Sondheim show "Follies", when she was well into her 70's. Again, a thank you to Living Era Records in England for putting all the "older" music on CD.
Must-have for fans of 1920s music!.......2005-01-13
George Olsen (originally from Oregon) went from being drum major of the University of Michigan marching band to leading successful pit orchestras for some of the most famous Broadway musical productions of the 1920s. He appeared in numerous Ziegfield follies, George White scandals, etc. His orchestra began recording for Victor records in 1924 and soon became a rival to the top-rated orchestras of Paul Whiteman and Fred Waring. Olsen's most successful recording was the 1925 smash hit, Who?, and was followed by many others including, Lucky Day, Do Do Do, Varsity Drag, and Doin' the Racoon. Olsen appeared in the Eddie Cantor talking picture, Whoopee, in 1930. He also was Jack Benny's first orchestra leader when Benny began his weekly show on radio in 1931.
Olsen's recordings were generally up-tempo renditions of Broadway or other popular tunes. The arrangements were complex, musically "busy", and featured a rotation of lead instruments on repetitions of the main theme, driven by a relentless rhythm section of the "boom-chick" variety. The music reflects and embodies the carefree spirit and hyperactivity of the "jazz age". The vocals are remarkably good and surprisingly understated, for the period. The lead singer was usually Fran Frey who had an unpolished-but-effective-and-charming, relaxed, baritone delivery. (Frey was later musical director for the Ice Capades.) Other songs were tastefully and satisfactorily performed by a vocal trio. Several songs on this CD were sung by Olsen's wife, Ethel Shutta, who had an almost angelic, etherial, soprano voice.
Although Olsen's popularity waned in the 1930s, he continued leading some form of orchestra until he retired in 1951. In his later years, he was a successful restaurateur in Paramus, NJ. His popular restaurant, Olsen's, featured his 1920s and 1930s recordings as background music. He remained active until his death in the early 1970s.
The British label, ASV, has an extensive catalogue of reissued recordings from the 1910s into the 1950s. I have at least twenty ASV releases and all of them are of excellent quality. These Olsen recordings are a pleasure to hear. If you like 1920s music, you will find this CD to be indispensable!
Great twenties/thirties music!.......2004-10-25
George Olsen had a HUGE hit with "Doin' the raccoon." It is an infectious little number celebrating the raccoon coat fad with the college crowd back in the twenties. There was more to this band than just a novelty number, however. They played fantastically, had a great lead singer, and knew how to mix the then-new jazz beat with some melodic dancing music. This is a fun band and the cd is well worth getting.

Customer Reviews:
Exciting and enticing!.......2005-02-07
George Olsen's orchestra was really hitting its stride when these sides were recorded. His complex-but-pleasing orchestrations of Broadway and pop tunes played by high caliber musicians well exemplify the care-free spirit and joie de vivre of the "jazz age", 1920s.
Most of the songs on this CD are happy, upbeat, high-energy performances that have been pleasingly remastered. Olsen's Victor dance recordings were second only to Paul Whiteman's in sales during this period, and they possess a musical vibrancy that was often lacking in the more regimented Whiteman outfit.
Giving this CD a five-star rating really does not accord these recordings the proper respect that they deserve. If you like 1920s music, then you probably already know how important George Olsen was to this era. This CD (all electrical recordings) and its equally excellent companion, Volume I (mainly acoustic recordings), are vital additions to one's collection of vintage performances.

Customer Reviews:
Addictive little musical.......2006-06-22
First, I should explain that why I didn't give this 5 stars is that the sound quality is from 1926 - 1940s vintage. You can hear the scratchiness of the 78 rpm records in some of the tracks. Having said that, this is a fine recording that gives you the gist of the story, with the musical highlights and just enough of the surrounding play to give you a good idea of the story line. In spite of my commentary about the vintage sound, it's good enough to make out words such as "sweet interlocutory decree", in the song "When we get our divorce". BTW, when was the last time you heard a song from people looking forward with joy and anticipation towards their impending amicable divorce, and viewing their recent marriage with dread? Cute huh?
I've been in love with Sunny since about 10 years ago when the Canadian Broadcasting System (CBC) in Toronto played excerpts from Sunny over the radio. I was driving my car, and immediately mesmerized by the captivating "Who". You know you're hooked when the melody starts coming back to you over and over again, even in your sleep. Finally, I've got this CD, and I literally can't stop listening to it. I listen in my car. I listen on my computer. I just keep listening, and singing along.
The story is lightweight fluff, but Jerome Kern's music and Harbach's lyrics are heavyweight gold. This CD is a nice introduction to Sunny.
Sunny.......2001-01-07
I've loved "Sunny" since seeing it at the Goodspeed Opera House in Haddam, Ct in the '70s. Just wish there was a cast album of that production. However, this album originally recorded in the '20s makes up in vintage charm what it lacks in recording quality. The album includes several versions of "Sunny." The first gives the lead-ins to the songs so you see how they fit into the plot. The following ones give different versions of the songs and several songs that were added in subsequent productions. Several songs, "D'ye love me?" "Who" and "Sunny" are particularly delightful and will keep you humming. A must for lovers of the old Broadway musicals.

Album Description
All Over Down Under was recorded live during a week of concerts in March 2000 in Australia with Kristina Olsen (guitar, steelbody slide guitar, saxophone, concertina and vocals), Peter Grayling (cello, mandolin) and George Butrumlis (accordion). It contains twelve new songs/intrumentals, nine spoken tracks of humor/stories and three bonus live versions of songs from previous recordings. The unusual combination of instruments and material create an exciting new direction for Kristina's music and writing.
Customer Reviews:
Naked folk exposed.......2005-04-27
To me, good folk music is a performer's document of their time. I love this album because it is so revealing and open about Kristina's experiences.
This album gives the impression that Kristina has been around, done some living, reflected on what she has been through and then written heart felt lyrics about it all.
I'd recommend buying this album just for the song "Portsoaken" alone. Great stuff and what a pity there aren't any samples for you to hear.
Kristina's lyrics are so good because they don't have any self pity in them, only strength and humour. This is not the music of a self pitying navel gazer but that of a strong woman in love with life and all that it brings.
I saw Kristina in concert in Birchgrove in Sydney and I was blown away. It was a free concert and Kristina was on the smaller of two stages and it looked like she was going to be some kind of filler act (I'd never heard of her before). She quickly dispelled my misgivings and went on to give a really great show (unaccompanied). She shone, I feel really grateful to have seen her live.
All this and she can dance, too!.......2002-03-24
This recording ranges from passionate to bittersweet to hilarious to exquisite. Regardless of where the ride takes you, it's extremely well sung and performed. The interplay with the other performers and the audience adds to the experience. They all so clearly enjoy being there that one can't help but join in. Highly recommended!
