Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp was an essential voice in the revolutionary jazz of the 1960s, creating a music that insistently linked art and social issues. He was also a musician who fused the past and present in jazz, leapfrogging over bebop to develop a sound that combined the expressive breathiness of Ben Webster with the new vocabulary of free jazz. Those qualities are much in evidence in these 1965 sessions. The principal band here is a sextet, and it brings a primal force to Shepp's charging, complex, multidimensional compositions. But within this potent brew, individual voices distinguish themselves. Altoist Marion Brown's lines always invoke the blues, while trumpeter Ted Curson, a veteran of Charles Mingus's bands, provides a sense of detached perspective. The riffing horns create a backdrop for some of Shepp's most volatile orations on "Hambone" and "Los Olvidados" as his tenor seems to shout, shriek, strut, and cajole with a life of its own. A live septet version of "Hambone" is even more turbulent than the studio take. The rest of the CD heads off in a variety of directions. Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss" is recast with some fresh dissonance. Taking his initial cues from Webster, Shepp goes on to turn the ballad into something very much his own, though still Ellingtonian in spirit. His arrangement of "Girl from Ipanema" adds unlikely fire to the Jobim tune, while "Malcolm," a poem inspired by the assassination of Malcolm X, has Shepp's voice and tenor accompanied by just bass and drums. While these diversions might now seem forced or melodramatic, Fire Music is a varied CD that retains much of its original power. --Stuart Broomer

For their second full-length, the Montreal-based seven-or-eight-piece Arcade Fire show themselves capable of Big Rock, as original, and as potentially marquee-topping as TV on the Radio and Sigur Ros. Regardless, the intentional murkiness of these pleasantly anthemic New Wave dirges makes it sound as if the music has already reverberated through a crowded cement stadium. Named after cult author John Kennedy Toole's first novel, Neon Bible is smart and subtle enough to present itself as a personal discovery for every listener, every word to be pored over by fans (as with those of Tori Amos, Pavement, and Radiohead). Surely, lines like "The sound is not asleep/ It's moving under my feet" have already been scribbled onto the margins of countless textbooks. Such words are delivered with less intensity this time, but no less import. For vocal influences, lead singer Win Butler seems to have traded his '80s Bowie in for an '80s Springsteen, at least on the songs "Antichrist Television Blues" and "Windowsill" (though "Intervention" sounds an awful lot like '80s era Go-Betweens). The kitchen sink arrangements include the use of an Eastern European orchestra, pipe organ, hurdy gurdy, and a military choir. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good.

Successful Change.......2007-06-20
Following on from the stirring, morbid and undoubtedly unique journey of "Funeral", Arcade Fire dispels any fears (and critic's expectations) of a slacking follow-up. "Neon Bible" is quite simply one of the best albums I have heard in recent years. Vastly superior to the fields of mediocre pop-rock and even the band's past high standard - this is an album to savour.
Successfully different is the theme for "Neon Bible". Instead of re-hashing a tried and tested formula, the band branch out an array styles and refine their existing idiosyncrasies. New flavours are introduced to spectacular effect - perhaps best shown by the glorious stomping "Antichrist Television Blues", a song many have been comparing to heyday Springsteen due to Butler's stressed and authoritative delivery of lyrics attacking the state of current affairs. A similar theme is applied to "Windowstill", a yearning ballad with Butler singing about his desires to move on and away from this troubled society.
Further developments in sound include the album's sublime closer "My Body Is A Cage", which sees the band entering slow-burning blues, fusing it with the eerie backdrop of searing pipe organs. Similarly, other album highlight "Intervention" showcases the thundering organs as the central piece, with the song slowly picking up pace until it becomes a stomping riot through Butler's potent lyrics concerning the ideals and demands of modern life, "you say it's money that we need, as if we're only mouths to feed", and religion, "working for the church while your family dies", and how ultimately love needs to be tendered, "every spark of friendship and love will die without a home". While these may not be revolutionary lyrics, Butler's compelling style of delivery gives a fantastic sense of desperation, letting his emotions spill out and giving great weight to his words and the music backing it.
I believe these changes make "Neon Bible" such a major success for me, as it shows the band developing and adding new influences to an already exceptional sound. This is not to say "Neon Bible" is just an outing into new territory as there is still that signature vibe and atmosphere, only refined for better effect. This is shown in one of my favourites "Keep The Car Running" which seems a direct continuation of sounds from "Funeral", combining the strong galloping march of "Power Out" and the lush vocal harmonies of "Wake Up", only this time the structuring is concise and trimmed, making for a more refined outing. The same refinement can be said for "No Cars Go", the pinnacle song from Arcade Fire's debut EP, only this time it is executed in riotous style, emphasising the powerful strings and catchy chorus melodies. "Ocean of Noise" strikes me as a great improvement on the slower and brooding ballad approach, and showcases one of Butler's most menacing and brooding performances to date.
Other tracks unmentioned keep the album flowing, and make for an album free of any filler. Songs such as the gloomy opener "Black Mirror", the subtle atmospheric title track and the two-part "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" round off "Neon Bible".
"Neon Bible" lived up to my expectations and delivers one of the most powerful and stirring albums in recent years. Combining the old triumphant sound of "Funeral" and executing new influences and styles, the album is sure to please fans old and new.
Beautiful beyond description!!.......2007-06-17
"Neon bible" is Canadian rock group Arcade Fire's sophomore disc. I'd read loads of glowing reviews of this CD (which usually makes me wary) but guess what, it is brilliant!
Built around the core of husband and wife team Régine Chassagne (who does most of the singing) and Win Butler, their debut "Funeral" was critically acclaimed and nominated for Grammys.
Their music is melancholic, but highly melodic, incorporating orchestral arrangements, choirs, organs, and even accordion, giving them a sound like no other band.
"Black wave/bad vibrations" is a two part song, the first sunny, upbeat half sung by Win, while the moodier second half (with haunting angelic harmonies) is sung by Régine. It is simply stunning!
It flows into "Ocean of noise" which opens with the sound of thundering waves, leading into a brilliant swelling midtempo song drenched in guitars and organ. My favourite song; haunting and beautiful.
"My body is a cage" starts off as an organ driven blues song, progressively layered to an almost hymnal fervor.
For upbeat songs, we have the shimmery "No cars go" (describing an Amish-like existence), "The well and the lighthouse" , and the sunny "Keep the car running".
"(Antichrist television blues)" has a country feel, while the organ/accordion driven "Intervention" is simply grandiose.
The CD has already made #2 in the US and UK, and I'm sure it will earn more accolades (Grammys) down the line.
Trust me, this is no Funeral........2007-06-13
I was just plain bored with this album. I loved Funeral and the self titled ep, but I guess my hopes were just too high with this one. The difference between Neon Bible and Funeral is that on Funeral the songs actually feel like they had some sort of energy and they all stick out as great tracks. On Neon Bible, everything just feels slow moving, like the album is trying to build itself up for some great payoff in the end, but it fails. it just feels like its chugging along to nowhere, and derailing itself in the process. some of the lyrics on the album are really embarassing too. I think everyone just really wanted to like this album and i think thats why its getting such great reviews from critics and being called a successful followup. I think it sold so many albums because it got mainstream radio play, and i think, in its defense, it is a hell of a lot better than anything else on the radio. it has its moments, but not a whole albums worth like Funeral.
Simply Amazing.......2007-06-13
For those who haven't heard this record, buy it, and listen to it about 10 times in a row. You might not think it's all that special at first, but TRUST ME, you will soon find it to be one of the most incredible releases in recent years. If you liked "Funeral," you MUST have this record, as it is even better than its predecessor! Get it NOW! You won't regret it.
Great....until the bottom falls out........2007-06-09
I was fully prepared to give this album 5 stars. I really was. I really liked the variety - the foot-stomping rhythm of "Keep The Car Running", the sad & haunting "Ocean Of Noise", the way "Bad Vibrations/Black Wave" and "The Well & The Lighthouse" each shift gears midway through. I definitely liked where the album was going. And then WHAM! Arcade Fire tacked "No Cars Go" (a crummy, excessively-layered dud reminiscent of the Thompson Twins) and "My Body Is A Cage" (just an overall snoozer) onto the backend of this record and I couldn't help but feel disappointed. Overall, this is a nice move up from Funeral, however I can't help but feel like maybe the band should've quit while they were ahead...or else adjusted the track list. Still worthy of 4 stars on the strength of the other songs.

Why Warren Zevon's Stand in the Fire has languished in the CD-reissue era is a mystery. It's an unbridled live rock album, recorded in 1981 when live albums were de rigueur. Zevon, for all the well-orchestrated rock (and great backing vocals on "Mohammed's Radio"), was a small-venue guy and an unlikely rocker. He tears it up on "Stand in the Fire" and adds guitar grit and vocal menace to "Werewolves of London," making the "little old lady got mutilated late last night" line sparkle and name checks James Taylor and Zevon's early champion Jackson Browne. Then there are the added tracks, all four previously unreleased. "Frank and Jesse James" rolls as a piano and vocals vehicle, brilliant in its simple dressing. And the closer, "Hasten Down the Wind," is touching, especially with the ever-aware Zevon introduction: "Speaking as one who has abused privilege a long time," he says, "I tell you, it's great to be alive." --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
The 1981 live album masterpiece STAND IN THE FIRE--until now woefully out of print--prompted allmusic.com to write, "No one argues that Warren Zevon is a gifted singer and songwriter, but STAND IN THE FIRE proves that, when he wants to, he can also rock with the best of `em." Recorded at L.A.'s Roxy theatre in 1981, the disc features the two unforgettable original songs Zevon debuted on that year's tour, "The Sin" and "Stand In The Fire." Also includes searing versions of "Lawyers, Guns And Money," "Werewolves Of London," "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me," "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," "Mohammed's Radio," and "Jeannie Needs A Shooter," a co-write with Bruce Springsteen, among other stellar performances. Live rock and roll albums don't get any better than Stand in the Fire.......2007-06-13
Reader, we have consensus. Lists of the greatest live albums often include James Brown, Live at the Apollo, Bob Dylan and the Band, Before the Flood, and recordings from King Curtis, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, and the Who. To this pantheon add the newly re-issued 1981 recording of Stand in the Fire. Among 1970s singers songwriters, Warren Zevon presented a welcome refraction of the mellow stylings of his California contemporaries. Certainly this was true in songs where Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner exacted revenge and an Excitable Boy was a really bad prom date. The production values of his early albums, though, belied such aggressive content. Not here, a magic night at the Roxy, where fierce Bo Diddley beats, nearly-New Wave stylings, unhinged vocals, a rowdy, rocking backing band, and incendiary guitar work engulf these songs to spectacular effect. Zevon himself sounds like he's having the time of his life and I hope he was. The hit, Werewolves of London, is here, of course. But it's hardly the highlight (and that's no slight) on a record where every tune absolutely burns. Zevon and band also played two previously unrecorded songs and they are as strong as the familiar tracks. It sounds like every player on stage knew this was a show for the ages. So get this recording today. And as the best rock and roll deserves, turn it up!
One of the best live albums you'll hear.......2007-06-08
I had this record on vinyl and always looked for a digital copy. Great versions of Werewolves, Pitiful and especially Lawyers. Terrific energy, band and memories of Zevon.
Awesome live album.......2007-05-23
It is about time they released this. I have been playing my original record in the meantime.
One of the great live albums, if you need an album to crack the plaster on your ceiling by turning your stereo up to 11 (past 10 for that little extra umph), this is the one to buy.
You won't be disappointed. It rocks. Check out "Lawyers,Guns and Money"
Easy choice for any Zevon Fans.......2007-05-22
The 4 extra songs correct the only downside of the orginal being a little short. Classic Zevon. Waited years and years for this on CD
Even Jimmy Carter's Got the Highway Blues.......2007-05-22
True to its title, an incendiary live record that held out the promise of the late Warren Zevon as a rival to his friend and collaborator Bruce Springsteen--if one can imagine a hard-drinking, bespectacled Boss with a somewhat sick sense of humor vying with an endearing sentimentalism.
Stand in the Fire is 180 proof Zevon, stoked by a relentless drums-bass-guitars-keyboards attack that mixes finesse and force. The man himself is in rare form, in total command of his material but always threatening to go off the edge and take the band and the crowd with him.
Zevon left us with several very strong studio albums, with the most consistent being his self-titled debut (1976) and Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School (1980). Excitable Boy (1978) has several classics including the disturbingly droll title song but is weighed down by an equal number of weaker efforts. Sentimental Hygiene (1987), one of the very few Zevon albums of the 1980s, is perhaps his most underrated work. The farewell album The Wind (2003) is indispensable and quite moving but also uneven. Revisiting Stand in the Fire in its remastered expanded version confirms my belief that this could be the definitive Warren testament.
Warren's unique career had its peaks and valleys--this is a peak that should be the envy of any and all rock and rollers.

One thing you know you'll get from Franti and Spearhead is a certain kind of crystal clarity--on the production, musicianship, and, of course, in the righteous political message. Released two years after Franti traveled by himself to war-ravaged Baghdad, Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, each of these songs deals with the human cost of war poignantly and pointedly. The lyrics may seem simplistic when removed from the songs--"Those who start wars never fight them/And those who fight wars never like them" and "The F15 is a homicide bomber"--but very few artists have the honesty and balls that Franti does. Bless him for that. Spearhead might lose credibility with some by tying Peter Tosh's chant to "legalize it" to their call for revolution, but those folks are not in the target demographic, anyway. Those who are will thoroughly dig this. From the jam band accents of "Time to Go Home" to the reggae of "Light Up Ya Lighter" to the U2-ish ballad "I Know I'm Not Alone," it's easily Franti's best album yet. --Mike McGonigal
Description
In 2004, Franti and his team traveled to the core of the red-zoned, war torn neighborhoods of Baghdad, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip with his guitar, video cameras, and the intent to experience first hand the human cost of war. Out of this journey, he created a compelling documentary ("I Know I'm Not Alone") and a searing, reflective album of original songs. "Yell Fire!" is his most compelling, engaged collection of songs, fired by a fury at the injustice of war, and a rediscovery of the love and community that supports those doing the fighting. It embraces reggae, blues, folk, hip-hop, and the anthemic politics of rock artists like U2 and Springsteen. With massive grooves and soaring choruses, Franti and Spearhead have produced an album to inspire and ignite.

The best hip-hop hippie protest and dance music out there!.......2007-06-11
After some of their sublime recent efforts, I was ready for a letdown, but this CD just keeps giving and giving. Yell Fire is an absolute rocker and shows Michael isn't ready to back down from laying the truth out there. Many other great social consciousness and peace music tracks on there ('It's time to come home,' 'East to the West', 'Hello Hello', ...). Also my 14 month old daughter loves to dance to tracks 8 and 9!
Michael's leading the love revolution. When I saw him in Tucson last year it was one of the greatest performances I've seen. The most amazing things was his total confidence in himself which seems to have led him into a position of being totally selfless in his sharing.
It's not often..........2007-05-30
... I hear a record so emotionally powerful that it moves me to tears. This is an extraordinary record.
Great! Great! Great!!!.......2007-05-19
I am not usually a "reggae" fan, but this album is great. It has a timely message of waking up about war and it sure wakes up the listener. My husband asked me if I had worn the grooves off the CD yet. He (the old time country music fan) is even singing along with a couple songs. I would gladly give this album as a gift to anyone one I know. In fact, I have been spreading the word about this album to anyone who will listen.
Fire! is right.......2007-05-12
Michael Franti is on fire with one! If you're unfamilar, his musical style fits most accurately in the reggea genre on this cd. His style is somewhere between Big Mountain and Bob Marley, with a hint of Robbie Robertson, yet all his own. This cd is full of brilliant, clear, intelligent, beautiful, and yes political reggea. Michael is soulful and passionate throughout while maintaining intoxicating melodies and never failing to get his point across. "One Step Closer" and "Sweet Little Lies" pay inspiring visits to my mind with every play.
Good stuff.......2007-05-07
I wasn't familiar with Franti until I saw his film 'I Know I'm Not Alone'...after seeing this excellent documentary, I had to have this album. Franti definitely pushes a strong message in this album, set to some outstanding music. His anti-war theme is definitely appropriate in these days, and he does it in a way that's not too overbearing. Simply put, the music stands on its own.

Album Description
Vancouver's 3 Inches of Blood unleash Fire Up The Blades, the sophomore release from the dual vocalist group. Recording with several band members for the first time, Fire Up The Blades truly realizes the band's full potential with lightning fast guitar work, galloping drums and over the top vocals. Produced by Joey Jordison (of Slipknot) and mixed by Zeuss (Shadows Fall), Fire Up the Blades sees 3 Inches of Blood taking the sounds of their 80s metal influences to new extremes to create a signature sound all their own. Evidence of the band's influences can also be found in much of the subject matter of the music which features many lyrics and song titles rooted in the world of fantasy. 3 Inches of Blood have skillfully built upon the foundations laid with their debut album, Advance and Vanquish, to produce a groundbreaking effort. A fast and technical album, Fire Up The Blades redefines the boundaries of hard music with songs like "Night Marauders," "The Goatriders Horde," "Forest King" and more.

Amazon.com
Why Should the Fire Die? is Nickel Creek's first album without Alison Krauss in the producer's chair, and on it, the trio's genre-expanding acoustic music has shifted even farther away from its bluegrass origins. The opening "When in Rome" perfectly encapsulates the aggressive approach the band favors, and features poetic lyrics far more obtuse than those of most groups with similar roots. The disc's first half stays rooted in a fairly conventional folk mode, with a lovely cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" (one of the few solo vocal turns from fiddler Sara Watkins) and "Jealous of the Moon" (cowritten with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris) obvious highlights.
But the album gradually grows darker. The songs take unexpected twists that are challenging and unconventional, while still emphasizing those angelic vocal harmonies that float and sting. Chris Thile's peppy instrumental "Stumptown" leads into the menacing "Best of Luck," with its edgy minor-key chorus echoed by Watkins's deceptively sweet voice spitting out lyrics of an obsessive high-school love affair gone wrong. And the drums of "Helena," one of the group's most radical compositions, bring out Nickel Creek's inner Coldplay. Not a complete break with their bluegrass beginnings, Why Should the Fire Die? is certainly the trio's boldest and most creative album, albeit one that might not appeal to their earliest fans. --Hal Horowitz

Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. Still, the contrast between these tracks and the instrumental score that precedes them may not be to everybody's taste. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
