5 out of 5 stars Modern, Deep Worship.......2000-11-20

Terry's music contains the depth of reverence toward Jesus that some think is missing from portions of todays worship. As well, not for one minute is he dry as some might think of hymns. Terry has a talented voice that determinably reflects God and not his own ability for inflection, reflecting charactor instead of personallity. There is a description in one of these two albums (now combined) of God birthing something in Terry Clark's heart about a 'new thing' in music, I paraphrase "If you will focus on me," said the Lord "I will do a new thing in your music." I knew Terry's music long before I every read that story and have exceptional faith that he heeded God's words. If you have looked for depth of worship, for awe and reverence of God, timing that insists on contemplation of your words as you sing along, Terry's music can provide that Holy atmosphere with which we should always approach our King and enough swing in the sound to know the artist must be in love too, with the God you worship.

Each of these collections are worth the price so it is like getting one for free. Terry Clark is one of those singers that I can't forget and I have been looking for his music on CD for a long time. I found other good information about terry clark on newportrecords.com and other Christian artists as well. This is a definite buy.

5 out of 5 stars Terry & Monk In Orbit!!.......2005-03-15

This is a underrated, somewhat, "rare" session date including the trumpeter from St. Louis, Clark Terry, jazz's most unique musician, Thelonious Monk, bassist Sam Jones, and the hippest hard bop drummer of the 50's, Philly Joe Jones, whos lifetime ambition was to preform with Monk, does it for the first and final time on this album here.

From the fast and furious swinging sensation of the first part of "In Orbit" to the 3/4 part in the same song, to the cool blues of One Foot In The Gutter, you are swung down home by four of the most happenin' jazz musicians in town!

Two things here, that make this session a good one. Clark is on flugelhorn. Its low colorful tone is a compliment to the rest of the instruments. The trumpet/piano/bass/drums format ain't one of the most regular formats heard in jazz. It is nevertheless, a pleasing one; two melow instruments and a rhythm section.

This is a swinging album! It spins frequently on my turntable. Monk, Jones, Jones, and Terry are all in good form here. This is a fine blowing session. Any hard bop fan will dig it.

This is one of the more interesting quartets ever assembled: Clark Terry playing the flugelhorn with Monk on piano (playing as a sideman no less), Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Playing mostly Terry compositions, the band works together wonderfully. Terry's rich tone and Monk's sharp, angular style would seem to be at odds with each other, but in fact the opposite is true. Their musical sensibilities are a good match; they are both always playing on the edge and not afraid to fall off. They are also both unafraid of being humorous, a rarity in musicians of any genre, particularly instrumentalists. The title track showcases Terry's dexterity and wonderful sense of melody. There is only one Monk composition, and that's "Let's Cool One."

    4 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......2007-05-12

I bought two LPs of this very tight group in the late 60s. Sadly all of them were lost over the years and although I managed to get one of them on CD I looked in vain for the other. This is very good music and the piano playing of Kellaway is delighful. The company that put together this collection is to be congratulated for resurrecting a great jazz quintet. It is a shame that because of "new" jazz and crossover music that these older recordings seem to be neglected by the major US lables. Thankfully a US company called Mosaic puts out limited editions of great jazz that is ignored by Columbia, Sony et al.

    5 out of 5 stars Reissued Classics........2007-02-11

I've challenged myself to write reviews of all of the CDs that I acquire. Unfortunately, I'm about six years behind, and there's little likelihood that I'll catch up. I'm also in a peculiar regressive mode vis à vis what I'm listening to. That means that I'm looking for old jazz that's been out of print for years. The recordings on this Lone Hill Jazz reissue are a great find. I have an LP called "Straight No Chaser"--obscurely issued on Mainstream (MRL320) many years ago; consequently, I had some sense of the collaboration constituted by Terry and Brookmeyer. (Other sweet recordings by Brookmeyer and Gerry Mulligan in this epoch are available through Lone Hill.) This comprehensive collection of Terry/Brookmeyer recordings from the 1961-1965 quintet days is wonderful. I keep saying, "this is a treasure" (ad nauseum), and I'll say it again. The collection is witty, collaborative jazz. It's the work of two men that love what they are doing, and it's fine stuff, indeed.
In some ways, the music is hard to categorize--it's all jazz, of course. And Brookmeyer's valve trombone is exquisite; Clark Terry's trumpet and flugelhorn work is at its peak. Keeping in mind that he was Miles Davis' mentor and model, you can hear many of that icon's antecedents without pretension or self-parody. Clark Terry does it all. As in the famous record with the Oscar Peterson trio, he moves from horn to horn with ease. On some songs Terry switches seamlessly from muted horn to open horn, from trumpet to flugelhorn at will. I'm not sure that I realized what a consummate horn player Clark Terry is until I listened to this two plus hours of playing. Terry and Brookmeyer can replicate the brass section of most big bands by themselves. The pianist on these 28 tracks is Roger Kellaway, joined by Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Crow and Bailey are the rhythm section in the Mulligan/Brookmeyer collaborations as well.
In any case, the best way to describe this collection is "eclectic." There are blues tunes with Terry's characteristic wail and some singing as well as various mumbling presentations of scatting. Then you have sensitive ballads, up tempo bop tunes, close harmonies and contrapuntal spectaculars. Tunes range from Monk songs to variations on them with lots of original tunes. Terry's range is simply phenomenal and he and Brookmeyer apparently loved every minute of these recordings. Many original songs by two living giants of jazz--and they're a lot of fun. If you buy this collection, you won't be sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have........2006-11-10

Clark Terry can be a polarizing figure amongst jazz lovers, but this classic set with Bob is one everyone can agree upon. It is exciting, inventive, and true to the period. Everyone should have at least 1 Clark Terry series, and this is a must have.

this is one of those recordings where you can sit back&feel the rich textures of the Rhythm Secton&Build up.Clark Terry&Bobby Brookmeyer have really good musical chemsitry.Clark Terry is one of my favorite Players.always dug His Tone.very strong Multi Set.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best little groups ever.......2006-01-25

Lane Hauck has it exactly right. Thank your lucky stars these recordings are available again. Just one thing to add - the balance of Terry's wit, Brookmeyer's intellect, and Kellaway's unpredictability give this group a remarkable three-way punch.

It's hard to believe this CD/DVD sampler of the PBS broadcast live-music series, hosted by the ubiquitous pianist Ramsey Lewis, is the first nationally syndicated jazz show in four decades. Its variety--which spans from the Milesian, smooth-jazz trumpet of Chris Botti and the Latin jazz stylings of flutist Dave Valentin to the Brazilian brilliance of keyboardist/composer Ivan Lins--makes it well worth the wait. Part of this show's charm lies in its genius collaborations, including Al Jarreau and Kurt Elling doing the Dave Brubeck gem "Take Five" and alto saxophonists Phil Woods and Dave Sanborn's remake of Horace Silver's "Senor Blues." Chick Corea's solo keyboard take on "Armando's Rumba" brings forth his Spanish heart, and trumpeter Clark Terry steals the show with his funny scat-blues number "Mumbles." Lewis's florid performance of John Coltrane's "Dear Lord," shows why he's the host of this stupendous show. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Fantastic quality sound and video, superb studio performances by the musicians, overall an excellent cd and dvd combo.

4 out of 5 stars music A+ but the DVD format a bit lacking.......2006-06-14

the music included in these disks are just top notch. however, having seen the programs on PBS, i regret that the producer did not include the entire program (inclusive of interviews with artists) on an extensive DVD/CD compilation. this DVD/CD is at best a tip of the iceberg compared with what is shown on PBS.

caution. for jazz fan who is also into HDTV, the HD DVD is a problem. the disk box states as 16X9 HD but the image does not fill up a typical 16x9 HDTV screen like the original boardcast. rather the DVD produces the image in letter box format. this is disappointing/. so, if you expect to see a true DVD in HD format filling up your 16x9 HDTV screen, the DVD disk will not meet your needs. however, if this is the least of your concern, this is the DVD/CD set you must own.

note to producer. please release the ENTIRE program in box DVD/CD set and fix the 16x9 dvd format. i will love to own this. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous music, heretical in some eyes.......2006-07-23

I don't often like remakes better than the original (12 Angry Men, for a movie example). I don't know that I would call this a remake as much as it is a variation on a theme. To explain, this album takes the Gil Evans arrangements that Miles made famous, even immortal forty-plus years ago, and takes them in a subtly different direction. For one, the solo instrument is a fluglehorn and not a trumpet and the richer, more sonorous sound changes the feel significantly.
And for another, Clark Terry isn't Miles Davis. I have to say that for myself, I LIKE Terry's playing better than Miles's in absolute terms, while acknowledging that Miles is the more important and innovative musician. (My favorite jazz genre is the swing-era small group. so there's a bias.)But the emotional content that Terry injects is, in my opinion, gentler and more varied, if less intense, that what Miles gave us. More nostalgic perhaps.
I also feel the connection more in this rendition to the lyrics of Gershwin's original songs, to the heartbreak and resilience of spirit that the opera celebrates.

5 out of 5 stars Rich and Gorgeous.......2005-05-15

Wow.A fantastic CD with a rich and gorgeous orchestra backing a great soloist. Hard to believe Gershwin wrote these songs in the thirties, Gil Evans originally did the orchestrations for Miles so long ago and now Jeff Lindberg leads the Chicago Jazz Orchestra to back Terry in this terrific collection from Porgy and Bess. The depth of the brasses alone make it worth the price. Deep, lush, sensous and mellow but it can swing. Get this one.

        5 out of 5 stars Clark Terry's Take on Porgy & Bess.......2005-04-01

This recording shows that Clark Terry can and does hold his own with cats like Dizzy & Miles. Don't get me wrong, I love Diz and Miles a lot, but Clark just took a different path and for some reason is only now getting his due.
Featured, as usual, is Clark's muted trumpet and gorgeous flugelhorn sound and man for anyone at any age he is definitely SMOKIN'! Do yourself a favor and grab this one!
The Chicago Jazz Orchestra is a perfect blend to Clark's genius.
What I'd really like to see is Miles' and Gil Evans' reactions!
        You are gonna love this!

        5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-09-24

I heard a long selection from this CD on my local Baltimore NPR station-WYPR-the week it was released. The Porgy and Bess suite was absolutely stunning, evocative and for lack of a better word, beautiful. I'm online now to buy the CD...

5 out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air.......2004-09-15

A classic piece of music re-done usuly has nothing but poor results, not on this record. From track one to done this record is non-stop entertainment. Framiler songs done in a way that will make you smile, and turn it up a notch on each track. A must have for anyone interested in Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars An album deserving of its title.......1999-09-23

If you like be-bop you'll love this album. Three fantastic horn players jamming together. You can imagine the fun these guys had whilest recording this album. The recording captures the essence of a jam session very well - sadly, something many jazz albums lack. Joe Pass's guitar offers a nice contrast to the intensive playing of the trumpets which, at times, reach notes far above the natural register of the instrument. A piece of advice: don't listen to the album if your nerves are currently frayed - chill out first!!
