Customer Reviews:
You're Halfway Home..........2006-11-11
If you're reading about this album, you're already halfway home to one of the biggest unsung pieces of hardcore history. Imagine if Black Flag kept the 2 guitar attack of Damaged and progressed into the My War era. It's impossible to discredit the raving comparisons to Black Flag but to me, they eclipse Black Flag's catalog after Damaged. Don't get me wrong, I love those post Damaged releases but to many, this cd is exactly what should have come after Damaged. The fact that Spot didn't produce this either only makes it better and better.
So if Damaged rocked your world and wondered in a perfect world what would have come afterwards, look no further. Soon you'll be saying "Black Flag who?" While Black Flag was exploring slower, doomy sludge rock on My War, these guys took the best of both eras and made a masterpiece.
In short, just get this CD.
Better than Black Flag? You better believe it........2005-06-04
Let's not beat about the bush here : this is the greatest hardcore record you'll ever hear. I'm serious. We can go back to early Minor Threat, "roir sessions" by Bad Brains, "first 4 years", "damaged", "my war" and "slip it in" by Black Flag, "get it away" by S.S.D, the classic 7"s by Negative Approach, Siege and Deep Wound, "metal circus" and "zen arcade" by Husker Du, everything by Infest!, the 90's classic releases by the likes of Born Again$t, Rorschach and No Comment and then go right up to "jane doe" by Converge. It doesn't matter one bit. This is better than all of them and any other hardcore record you wish to mention. Sure, there have been harder, faster and more brutal bands and records but noone else has ever quite captured the intensity of hardcore, that's so hard to accurately describe without resorting to the usual cliches of "raw power" and "vein popping aggression", so astonishingly as Bl'ast! on this, their debut album.
Bl'ast! were that rare beast : a deriative group actually better than the the group they based their sound on (that's Black Flag, dummy). They're most comparable with Black Flag circa the first side of "my war" but there's something about this album that sets it apart from the 'Flag. Firstly, there's the music which is more of a straightfoward hardcore sound but still dark, heavy and dissonant. Secondly, there's the excellent musicianship by all involved; the searing, eviscerating guitar work of Mike Neider and Steve Stevenson sprawling all over Dave Cooper's rumbling bass and Bill Torgerson's military styled, almost motorik at times, drumming. Thirdly, there's vocalist Clifford Dinsmore, without shadow-of-a-doubt one of the greatest hardcore frontmen there's ever been, who was so in tune with his band his raspy voice almost acts as a instrument. Listen to "time to think", "break it down" and the album closer "nightmare" and you'll see exactly what i mean. While his lyrics are the standard us-against-the-world and Reagan-era cold war paranoia that you'd associate with 80s hardcore, their confessional tone adds an extra dimension to them and they come across as expressive and emotional as oppossed to naive teen-angst sloganeering. Finally, there's the awesome production on here, done by the band themselves, which manages to be be so raw and dirty as to capture the dense fury the band projected but clear enough to accentuate each instrument and every little nuance of the music, of which there are many. Once this album gets inside your head it will never leave. I still play it at least 3 times a week.
I'm glad to see that there are a few people other than myself and Ebullition/Heartattack head-honcho Kent Mcclard, who once said Bl'ast! are the best hardcore band he's ever seen live, that are still fans of this mighty group as they seem to be a long forgotten band, even by the majority of hardcore fans. Respect to the 3 gentlemen, especially D.K Malone, who wrote the previous 3 excellent reviews.
The other two Bl'ast! album's are excellent but much like their two main reference points, Black Flag and Corrosion Of Conformity, they progressed into a more metallic sound that i'd pinpoint as being a big influence on someone like Rorschach. It's worth noting here that the metal influence in their music was infused far more successfully on those two albums than either of the last two Black Flag albums.
Bottom line : if you like hardcore you simply have to own this album. Even if you disagree with my suggestion that it's the greatest hardcore album ever made you'll still consider it a classic and as good as anything the genre has had to offer.
THE MOST under-rated US Hardcore LP of all time............2004-05-10
Not only were Bl'ast! ahead of their time musically by mixing raging Black Flag-style Hardcore and the intensity of metal the same way Corrosion of Conformity was on "Animosty" and later "Technocracy", but Power of Expression stands as one of the most intense Hardcore LP's EVER. It easily matches the insanity of Black Flag, sometimes eclipsing it (and I WORSHIP Black Flag!). They are pretty much forgotten today, but I will ALWAYS sing the praises of this band to ANYONE who will listen....BL'AST! f***ing RULES!!!
More than Expression.......2002-07-12
What stood out most about Bl'ast is that they sounded like BlackFlag to a tee. Music gerus wrote off this release as being nothing more than a ripoff of music styles. Bl'ast was in a class by themselves.Their live performance was unmatched. Their Starwood shows were packed and crowds very violent. If you can forget BF existed, and just give a quick listen to this:You will find this release intense. Not just intense musically, but stabbing lyrically. In my opinion, this band was better than Black Flag and their live set proved so.
Society System Blast Flag? Perhaps..........2001-07-14
I'll never forget the first time I heard this album... I was at the record store, just browsing. I found this record and there was a sticker on the front that said, among other things, "POWERFUL HARDCORE" and "WISHINGWELL RECORDS". That caught my eye because I knew that Wishingwell was Uniform Choice's label. Being quite the UC fan at the time (1986, I think,) not to mention a fan of "powerful hardcore" in general, these blurbs were enough to covince me me to buy it then and there. Took it home, slapped it on the turn table, dropped the needle. My first impression was that there was a mix up at the pressing plant and a Black Flag album had somehow mistenly been labeled and packaged as a Blast album. As I listened further, I noticed a heavy SSD influence as well. It was like the perfect marriage between Black Flag's Damaged and SSD's Get It Away, laced with just a hint of Black Sabbath. At the time, full of young and snotty indignation, I wrote Blast off as unoriginal, a complete rip-off. I clearly recall putting the record back into its jacket and thinking "Hopefully I can take this back and exchange it." But I didn't take it back. I listened to it again the following day. I listened to it again after that. Then again. And again. And again. I think you get the point. It soon became one of all time favorite albums, and it still is. Blatantly influenced or not (one could do much worse than being influenced by Flag and SSD,) these songs are simply incredible. Heavy and very dissonant and full of pyschotic time signature changes, yet ultra catchy and memorable in its own way. I like the two Blast albums that followed as well, but neither one quite reached the high-water mark that this one set for the group. I'm sure losing guitarist Steve Stevenson has something to do with this.

BL'AST! rules........2003-06-09
Anyone who has overlooked BL'AST! because of the inevitable heavy Black Flag comparison are completely missing the point and missing out on some great hardcore. The band said themselves in an old Flipside that they unabashedly worship and imitate Flag and are honored to be compared to them. Someone who reviewed BL'AST!'s first LP, The Power of Expression, on Amazon.com said they sounded like the perfect marriage between SSD's Get It Away 12" and Black Flag's Damaged LP, and I suppose that sums up their sound pretty well. Kent McClard from Ebullition Records and HeartAttaCk zine said they were probably the best live band he's ever seen. I bet. So much intensity and power. A bunch of surfer dudes on a mission to "surf and destroy", and they do indeed. All you need is The Power of Expression and It's In My Blood LP's, and you're all set my friend. Like Swiz, BL'AST! are a bit of an acquired taste. Expect songs above the 3:00 mark on average, sometimes even 5:00! *GASP!* The songs never bore me but thrash kids who don't listen to anything over 50 seconds will turn it off. See for yourself. Get it into it.
BLASTing the true hardcore style .no room for the weak!!!.......2001-12-04
from the mid 80s hardcore punk sceane comes the massive raw sounds of blast.a band that combined the early sst sound such as black flags damaged era with d.c hardcore(such as void and fath) along with explorations in changeing the mold of hardcore..there sound is not like the hardcore of today because with the feedback onslaught and off kilter time changes it will be mostly dissmissed as heavy jazz or something.also buy todays standards the production is often some of the rawest caught on record .not the overproduction of today .these guys actully played these songs live in the studio and did a great job with it captureing there power. this band in there day were what all hardcore music where all inspiring to sound like. but very few bands or people really caught on.so it is here for you to maybe find.this 2nd realise of the band also has the ep school out of course the cover of alice coppers classic done basiclly BLASTS way.so when you are searching out some new hardcore and you want something that is true to the sound .this one is definately it..good luck
Solid, intense, hardcore.......2000-11-30
BL'AST is probably one of the heaviest and most solid hardcore bands to come out of the 1980's... SWIZ is the only other band that comes close. They're known for intense vocals, noisy guitars and interesting tempo changes. The musicianship that goes into their albums is impressive- great guitar work, awesome drums. Alot of people say that they have a "BLACK FLAG" sound- which is true in terms of the noisiness of it and the guitar sound... but BL'AST is way more "hardcore" as opposed to "punk" and I think BL'AST's song structures are far more interesting. BL'AST is the sort of band that paved the way for stuff like SAM BLACK CHURCH.
This album was recorded live in the studio so it's a good recording in terms of production and it captures the intensity of the music played live as well. It's an incredible album and just as good as their other major l.p. "Take the Manic Ride".

Customer Reviews:
Excellent festival Jazz Fusion.......2005-05-09
While the title of this review might be misleading to stick Ast- Pachora into Jazz Fusion, I chose to label it with this style of music primarily because of the supreme line chart writing and musical performence by all the players. I had not heard of Pachora before I took a gamble and bought this CD. Chris Speed is from The Claudia Quintet (who are INCREDIBLE!).
The music is not hard edged nor whimpy. It has WONDERFUL festival type moods that are evoked with each spin!
There are odd time signatures but you do not really notice them because the music is so richly textured with ethnic influences, awesome clarinet, percussion and drums of the caliber of old Trilok Gurtu, Tabla Beat Science, Bela Fleck, or any of the 1970's ECM artists. It is ensemble playing that is uncomprimised. The reeds are as fluid as Bennny Goodman yet as musically interesting as Ash Ra Temple or early Coltrane. This is out-of-print because it was released on Knitting Factory Records that went out of business, not from poor quality writing, recording technology, or anything but bad luck for that company. Get it while it is cheep! It is a stupendious spin!
Great world jazz.......2001-11-09
Pachora is another group formed from the family of musicians who have contributed their top-notch efforts to Matt Darriau's Paradox Trio, the Brad Shepik ensemble(s), and Mo Boma. All groups mentioned meld world music with jazz and/or dance, and all are worth seeking out.
The Pachora lineup is Chris Speed on clarinet, Brad Shepik on electric saz (that's saz, NOT sax) and tambura, Skuli Sverrison on bass, and Jim Black on drums and percussion. The saz is a Middle Eastern stringed instrument, and dumbek--played by Jim Black--is one of the premier percussion instruments from the same region. The flavoring, then, is heavily Middle Eastern, and Pachora light into their songs with great intensity and even greater musicianship.
The tunes are almost all original, but based on modes and melodies from the Middle East. The one exception to this is Pachora's cover of, believe it or not, David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World, which they render with their characteristic stylings, giving it a truly unique feel.
A wonderful album. Pick up the band's other two prior releases--you won't be disappointed.

Yes, they do sound like Black Flag.......2005-10-18
Gotta respond to this:
"People compare them to Black Flag and Neider's guitar is similar in tone but that's where it ends. Bl'ast! were much more techinically sound and their use of diminished (dissonant) chords and scales owe more to bands like VoiVod or King Crimson and of course Black Sabbath than Ginn's noise, even if subconsiously."
Neider and the rest of the band would be sorry to hear you say that. Blast made it no secret that Black Flag was their one greatest influence. The thank-you list on their first album listed about a hundred different people, and then it ended with "And thanks to Black Flag for existing". They strove to emulate Flag and they were proud to be compared to them.
However, it's true that this, their third and final album, is their least-Flag-sounding release. The similarity is still there to a high degree, but they had also moved past their influences and developed a sound that was truly their own and truly unique. It had nothing to do with King Crimson or Voivod... though in all fairness Greg Ginn was probably influenced by Crimson, and some have labeled Blast as "progressive hardcore." Personally, I feel that this album and their second album (It's In My Blood) are very much overshadowed by their first album, Power of Expression. They had an amazing dual guitar dynamic and energy that they lost when original guitarist Steve Stevenson left the band and left Mike Neider on his own.
One of the best, period........2002-12-08
What can I say about this record? Probably one of the most original albums I ever heard and the last great record of the 80's. People compare them to Black Flag and Neider's guitar is similar in tone but that's where it ends. Bl'ast! were much more techinically sound and their use of diminished (dissonant) chords and scales owe more to bands like VoiVod or King Crimson and of course Black Sabbath than Ginn's noise, even if subconsiously. Heavy, dark and serious. Would be a shame to lose this record to obscurity. One of my top ten ever.
A Pure Bl'ast of Sonic Power.......2000-06-15
This album comes out of the blocks at full speed and doesn't slow down... a manic ride indeed!
In their second LP outing, the boys from Bl'ast take their sound to a new level of intensity. The heavy Black Flag influence is still there, overlaid with a healthy dose of metal riffage. The band wears its influences on its sleeve, but take the sudden tempo shifts, twisted guitar lines and gut wrenching vocals in a direction all their own.
If you like your hardcore HARD, and appreciate a band that's tight as can be, you'll dig this. Recommended for fans of the Cro-Mags, early Black Flag, etc. Not for the faint of heart.
