Amazon.com essential recording

Even for a relatively brief (20-song) overview of Ray Charles's '60s output during the peak of his recording stardom at ABC-Paramount, Anthology covers a hell of a lot of styles. It couldn't be any other way, not when examining the period in which he hit the charts with transformed versions of half-forgotten standards ("Georgia on My Mind"), hip jazz instrumental takes on Clovers tunes ("One Mint Julep"), rocking uptempo R&B ("Hit the Road Jack") and mournful proto-countrypolitan ("I Can't Stop Loving You"). If any of those four titles means a thing to you, this primer on America's greatest singer is probably a disc you should own. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Anthology.......2006-11-03

Wonderful! A must have for any fan of Ray Charles... Also a great gift for
someone that hasn't followed his music.

4 out of 5 stars Facinating but uneven.......2006-03-24

At its best, this Ray Charles retrospective has some of the best stuff you're likely to hear. Listen to such classics as Hit the Road Jack, Let's Go Get Stoned, Unchain My Heart, Don't Set Me Free, I Don't Need No Doctor, Hallelujah I Love Her So, Busted, One Mint Julep, I Got a Woman, You Are My Sunshine (thankfully not delivered in the stupid traditional fashion), America the Beautiful and, of course, What'd I Say. This brings out why Ray has been dubbed "Genius".
My only problem is that sometimes this collection will lapse into SAP. Songs such as Georgia On My Mind, Crying Time, Cry, Here We Go Again and Born to Lose are all pure, unadaultered SAP. I am sorry. And his cover of Eleanor Rigby is ...good, loads better than Aretha's anyway, but you're better off with the original.
But the soul outweighs the sap, and Ray was a true genius at his best. So pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Collection .......2004-11-09

Charles' masterful sides for ABC, Atlantic, and CBS helped change the face of popular music and this CD goes a long way towards proving the case convincingly: "Georgia On My Mind," "America The Beautiful," "Born To Lose," "Hit The Road, Jack," "What'd I Say," "One Mint Julep," have influenced most every musician alive. "Anthology" leaves the listener hungry for more from Charles' legendary "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" CD, but fortunately, Rhino has released that (with bonus tracks) as well. "Anthology" is the most economical, all-inclusive collection of the output of one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars A Lot of Great Stuff But..........2004-11-04

will there ever be a true anthology of Ray Charles music? The man was so prolific and merged and melded and blended and crossed so many boundaries. (Ever hear of "I'm Moving On", probably his earliest "country" tune written by country legend Hank Snow?) This package is probably the best of the compilations and for me with "Busted" and the best "America the Beautiful" rendition I know of, it's enough. But consider it does not include "This Little Girl of Mine", "The Night Time is the Right Time" (later covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival), "Drown in My Own Tears", "You Don't Know Me". Those are not just "filler" songs but songs whose mention conjure up this great artist's name. Still for the money this is a very good compilation and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The American Story Pure and Simple.......2004-10-18

With his story of struggle for freedom, dignity, and overcoming adversity, no one is more American than the African American. Ray Charles distills and delivers this message with a quiet power, gentleness, grace, and humility, especially when he sings "America the Beautiful" and "Georgia On My Mind." He has left us now, but not before giving us an enduring expression of who we are and who we can aspire to be. If you are any young American unfamiliar with Ray Charles' work, know that his art is part of who you are.

4 out of 5 stars funky good time.......2007-04-19

If you enjoy James Brown's horn work this anthology of the JB Horns will be very much appreciated. It shows the band in a broader spectrum than just funk, including R&B, soul, and more jazzy pieces. For me it was worth it just for the instrumental version of Soul Power '74. Hilights are The Grunt, Pass the Peas, Givin Up Food for Funk, and Breakin Bread.

Great grooves. Inclueds tunes by Fred Wesley and JB Horns, Maceo and the Macks, the JBs and the New JBs!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Funky Good Time.......2007-02-19

The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown and The JBs are by far the best musical talent on the planet. Their music will be played and remembered forever. No group playing today or in the past can produce the upbeat funky music transition that the JBs produce. A six star rating for this group is needed to put them well ahead of the rest of the music world.

5 out of 5 stars OH YES SIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.........................OR MAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.............WHOEVER IS READING THIS!!!!!.......2007-02-02

look here, when you have a band who is responsible for the lot of hip hop history and it is lead by a man who is the most sampled artist in hip hop period, then you have something ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!!! if you do not have this, then by all means, get this!!!! the selections speak for themselves now!!!! a groovefest as usual with that period of james brown and friends.

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-27

I grew up on this stuff in the 60's to early 70's before music went disco in 1975. This was the kind of music that when I was a little girl, at 2 or 3 in the morning on the weekend, I heard playing on the "record player" that my parents were having their weekend "cabaret" party to with their friends down in the basement. Listening to this stuff is like eating fried chicken, hot cornbread, and blackeyed peas on Sunday afternoon after church!!! You don't get no funkier than this!!! REAL MUSIC, REAL, REAL, FUNKY MUSIC, where it sounds so good, and even though I never understood nothing James' country azz was saying, it still sounded good!!! Rest In Peace, James - real soul music went with you, wherever you went!!!

5 out of 5 stars Get-Down Town.......2006-07-08

Even the most funk-obsessed will find soul-satisfaction in this 2-CD anthology. Roll back the carpet and get on the good foot because these horns are ready to please, please, please. The Godfather is never too far from the action but he does step aside long enough for the J.B.'s to show why they're the premier funk band in the business. Maceo Parker is way up front, providing ample evidence of just how much his yakety sax contributed to James Brown's success. Fred Wesley, on trombone, occasionally runs out of ideas before he runs out of notes, but this is not the kind of compilation one scrutinizes with a micrometer - you just get it and get into it.

With 30 great-gosh-almighty-hit-me-one-more-time-again tracks to select from, you might imagine there are quite a few standouts, too many to mention them all. Blessed Blackness is especially nice, as are Dirty Harri, Parrty, Doing It To Death, and Pass The Peas. My personal favorite is I'm Payin' Taxes, What Am I Buyin' - almost 10 minutes of outstanding backbeat, tight horns, great singing - and that magic ingredient - it's okay what you say.

In their decade of existence, A Tribe Called Quest weren't rap's biggest hit makers, but their signature numbers indeed fill this CD with style, eclecticism, and laid-back but deliberate flow; indeed, the group's stature seems to have grown since its 1998 breakup. The continued importance of their music and ideals for many hip-hop fans will only be enhanced by Anthology's 18 tracks (Q-Tip's recent hit "Vivrant Thing," from the Violator album is a bonus track). Those unfamiliar with Tribe's achievement should have their heads and booties set into motion by the fellas' many moods, from the playful "Check the Rhime" and "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" to trenchant commentaries such as "Description of a Fool" and "Sucka Nigga." And with its inclusion here, the somewhat rare and all-the-way out "If the Papes Come" will doubtless reestablish itself as an underground favorite. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Legends.......2007-07-09

I am one of the few young people who truly appreciate's hip hops roots. I cant even listen to the stuff thats out now b/c most of it has no substance or is just merely a copy of what the originators have already done. A Tribe Called Quest is a group that hasnt gotten the praise they deseve in hip hop (to me.) THey have created a style of hip hop all thier own. They infuse jazz and hip hop. Now thats sexy!Just somthing to sit back, groove to, dance to, or learn from, because its definitely story telling. I miss those days in hip hop. The album is definitely a great buy! My favorite rap album of all time!
My favorite songs are: Bonita Applebum, Sucka N**ga, We've Got The Jazz, and Electric Relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Tribe..................2007-04-24

A proper anthology would include every song on their 1st three albums, then you could pick a few songs from Beats Rhymes & Life and Love Movement. But overall this is a good intro for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Hip Hop.......2007-01-11

A Tribe Called Quest mixes so much flavor into each track. Each track was very different and offered a great variety of sounds. Its music that is great to listen to considering its tempo and lyrics. I wish more modern hip hop was like this. Definitely recommended on my list.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC Hip Hop at it's Best.......2007-01-09

What else can you say. This is Tribe at it's absolute best! One of the many pioneers of Hip Hop. Any true Tribe fan can and will appreciate "Anthology". This is REAL Hip Hop before it became on the verge of extinction.........

4 out of 5 stars Great for the young ones........2007-01-04

A Tribe Called Quest's Anthology is a GREAT overall veiw of the collection of music distributed through the years. I only rated this CD with 4 stars because it doesnt completely posses the fullness of an anthology. I am 16 and I purchased the CD after reading about the ATCQ classics mainly, The Infamous Date Rape and Steve Biko (Stir It Up) which unfortunatley are not here. But all in all everything else is on point. Electric Relaxation, Award Tour, and the clever Bonita Applebum make up for the shortcomings and extras like, I left My Wallet in El Segundo, Senerio and Find Away top off the Anthology. So overall this CD is worth the money.

Tower of Power blew--literally--out of the Bay Area's early-'70s scene at a time when hip black and white tastes were further diverging. The horn-heavy ensemble managed to find an audience of album buyers on both the soul and rock sides of the divide, though. The first disc of this chronological two-CD retrospective of tracks made between 1970 and 1997 holds most of the highlights--notably the wise, intensely grooving title track, which has only gained cachet in the quarter-century since its release, and "So Very Hard to Go," one of the classiest pop-soul singles this side of the Spinners. More a bunch of well-schooled musicians than truly inspired songwriters, Tower of Power often sounded better than its material and rarely if ever touched the magic of those cuts again. What Is Hip?'s second half shows the act's fuel running low even before it relaunched as a '90s lite-funk answer to hometown pals Huey Lewis and the News. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The Bay Area Sound.......2007-02-13

4 out of 5 stars If you've got the notion, Tower's got the potion..........2006-09-28

You will be literally blown away after a heaping helping of this masterfully assembled anthology. The best horn section in the land (no doubt influenced greatly by The JB's horns), this is raw, unadulterated Oaktown funk at its' finest. Take particular note at when the great Chester Thompson joins the group and rides those bass pedals to death!
This is a fine set, and while one could split hairs about omissions (or even inclusions toward the end of Disc Two), it serves as an outstanding testament to one of the most under-appreciated soul bands on Earth! Get it and turn it up loud!!!

4 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Funk.......2006-04-19

This was my introduction to T.O.P. and it gradually became a collection of undiscovered classics for me personally. This brand of big & intricate funk really grows on you. If you haven't bought a copy yet, go ahead and "Knock Yourself Out."

5 out of 5 stars More Soul Than You Can Control.......2005-11-15

A real treasure. T of P is a frequently overlooked band that has been keeping the funk alive for decades. Their horn section is legendary, the arrangements are just too tight, and all the big hits you want are here. Worth it for Back On the Streets Again, Squib Cakes, and Souled Out alone. Bring this 2-CD set to a party and watch your friends start dancing on the ceiling. A real value.

5 out of 5 stars Vibalicious!! .......2005-08-27

This a proper retrospective of a stellar career! And it isn't over yet! He's still playing, recording, touring and moving his audience, like always. This great music has even recruited quite a few of the younger generation, a testament to his talent!

Polydor did a hell of a job compiling and choosing the perfect songs for this project. For one can only imagine what it must've been like to select and choose what would be included, especially since Roy has so many terrific songs. I guess they settled on a little dash of everything, from the very funky, the very soft, the very electric and the downright jazzy!

Roy Ayers is the man, always has been and always will be..he's the cream of the crop and at the top of the heap, with tasty songs like "Running Away, Searchin', Freaky Deaky to putting his spin on the classic "You Send Me," which by the way, runs a full (8) plus minutes! This set also includes the often sampled: Everybody Loves the Sunshine! Another song draped in greatness! Whew! They just don't do it like this anymore. This is truly a best of and some...

Enjoy Roy...and given the opportunity, rush to see him perform Live. It's a treat for the soul and spirit. He is one of the few artist that I know (ala Maze f/Frankie Beverly) that can still sell out a show, every single time out! He's definitely, Mr. Consistency!

One can never go wrong with Mr. Ayers in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Essential.......2005-07-21

two cds full of roy ayers music should be enough to make any funky music fan happy, but the good folks at polydor went over the top with this one. these cds span a huge part of his recording career (even the often forgotten, yet enjoyable 1980s tracks) and they filled these cds with as much music as they possibly could - 31 tracks, 2 hours and 34 minutes of music. what's more is that someone even knew what the good tracks were. r&b, funk, soul and jazz predominate his music, and much of it is filled with his excellent vibraphone playing and equally soaked in his smooth singing (he has killer back-up singers too). his popular duets with the likes of guru - which i personally never flipped for - aren't on here, but that makes it all the better in my opinion. it's all roy ayers in the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars The Freaky Deaky--Funky Donkey! Oh! Man!.......2005-06-12

The first time I saw Roy Ayers Live was when I was a HS Freshman and snuck into Mansfield State College in Mansfield, PA now known as Mansfield University. He started the show off with The Freaky Deaky--and I lost my mind. There is only one Roy Ayers---no one can ever dulicate Roy--ever. Years later I had the chance to run into Roy again, this time in my 30's and met the brotha and told him of my experience---being Roy he just laughed and said "Thanks".

If you are a real Roy Ayers Fan--this is a much have CD. Runnin Away---When I see you- Love will bring us back together---Don't stop the feeling---all powerful--guaranteed to put you in a frenzy
as you will wear the letters off the CD.
Don't pass this on this one!

5 out of 5 stars PART OF MY DESERT ISLAND CD COLLETION..........2004-04-27

If I were stranded, this is one of the CD's I could play over and over without driving myself crazy. This is the best compilation of Roy Ayers I've heard. His music is funky, jazzy, soulful and spiritual at the same time. Guaranteed to make your head bob at all times. This is why so many artists continue to sample his music. A must have for the collection...

5 out of 5 stars CHANGED MY LIFE.......2003-03-12

5 out of 5 stars Grover's Best cuts.......2002-05-09

The Late Grover Washington is at his best on this album. Just the two of us, the best is yet to come, let it flow and the others make this a quality album.

5 out of 5 stars For The Romantic Fool In You.......2000-06-17

Like so many people who appreciated his talent I am a serious Grover enthusiast. This was always my favourite cd of Grover until the release of what was to be his final album Aria. Its difficult to find the right words to do value to a genius like Grover but simply put there is so much romance and depth in this cd. Of course the absolute classic "Just the Two of Us" had to appear on on this but the tracks as a whole are mixed so well. I adore Be Mine Tonight and Jet Stream but for me the first track summised Grover perfectly - you always knew that The Best is Yet to Come because his talent just kept on growing the music got better and better. Not that its easy to improve on perfection!

It would seem God is a true jazz fan and could resist no longer and whenever I am blue at the thought of Grover's passing I think of him wowing the angels in Heaven with his enchanting sax music and I smile.

5 out of 5 stars The best nowdays jazz music.......1999-02-12

I first heard to Wine Light album and I appreciate very much the Grover Washington music playing, then I bought this one and I started buying GW albums.

Album Description

Gil Scott Heron is one of the most influential black music artists of his generation. Like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield his music transgresses all music boundaries, and he is heralded in rock as in soul and jazz circles. Along with his partner and lyricist Brian Jackson, Gil wrote and recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 70's always with poignant lyrics. 'The Bottle' has been a club favourite since its release in 1973, 'Johannesburg' predicted the unrest in South Africa two years before Soweto, 'Its Your World' has been in demand for past ten years or so. This album puts together 15 of the best and most in demand of their recordings from 1973 to 1980, and is the first collection covering that period for 15 years. Many of the tracks have not appeared on CD since then and some are making their first appearance on CD. Soul Brother Records. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars long awaited.......2007-06-10

this is the grandfather of rap. i always look forward to any release from Gil Scott-Heron. this is one extremely talented genius! i already own most of this stuff either on cd or vinyl. he is highly recommended. PLEASE RE-RELEASE BRIDGES!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection..........2005-11-11

I have purchased every Gil Scott-Heron disc I can get my hands on, and although the price of this is steep for a single disc, this one is well worth getting. This anthology contains songs from Gil's long out of print albums "Bridges", "Secrets", and "1980" which were never released on CD. In fact, only six of the songs on this 15 song anthology are available on other Cd's; the other nine are not available anywhere else. I had never heard Gil's work from the 1977-1980 period before and am really glad that some of it is finally available as it is no less important than the rest of his work as it marked the final years of his collaboration with Brian Jackson (who also contributed some of the liner notes for this CD). This collection serves as a great introduction to their work, although I would recommend getting some of Gil's pre-1973 music also such as "Pieces of A Man" or the collection "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". To me Gil Scott-Heron stands as one of the most important artists of the past thirty years and he remains incredibly underrated. I have never heard anyone blend the blues, funk, R&B, and jazz as seamlessly as Gil Scott-Heron did. If you haven't heard him before or are a fan, this collection is highly recommended.

Although California jazz is often considered synonymous with the "cool" sounds of musicians like Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan, the West Coast milieu was actually as diverse as the East Coast jazz scene. This impressive four-disc collection chronologically documents the progression and development of the many genres existing within the context of California jazz. While cerebral players like Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Guiffre, and Art Pepper are featured here, this anthology also includes works by more passionate figures, including Charles Mingus and Dexter Gordon. Highlighting cuts by visitors like Miles Davis alongside performances of local heroes like Shelly Manne and Howard Rumsey, this compilation is as enjoyable as it is instructive. From cool to swing to bop to bossa nova and beyond, California had it all. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars A Great Jazz Collection-- Even If You're Just A Casual Fan!.......2004-12-20

This 4 CD, 62 song set is a must have for jazz fans! What a great range of artists!
It covers the California Jazz Scene on the Contemporary Records label from 1950-1964.
Some of the most influential artists of all time recorded for Contemporary Records during these years, and this box set is truly awesome!
A 70 page booklet comes with the set with all kinds of great essays and trivia about the California Jazz Scene in the 50's and 60's, as well as complete track-by-track info. about every song.

Hey, if you're just a casual jazz fan and don't know that much about this music, this is a great primer for you!

GET THIS BOX SET!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best of the best in the music.......2000-04-29

Don't be put off by the title AN ANTHOLOGY OF CALIFORNIA JAZZ which may conjure up some bland, ice-cream type, hair bleached, shallow feel-good music. This boxed set has excerpts from some of the very best jazz of the fifties, period, and includes work by Mr Miles Davis, Mr Sonny Rollins, Mr Ornette Coleman,Mr Clifford Brown, Mr Ben Webster and Mr Art Tatum. It includes, for me, some of my all time favourite tracks from some all time favourite albums including: BERNIE'S TUNE and MY FUNNY VALENTINE by the ORIGINAL Mulligan Quartet;ETUDE DE CONCERT by Shelley Manne and his Men; DAAHOUD by the Clifford Brown Ensemble; BLUE SANDS by the Chico Hamilton Quintet which has one of Mr Jim Hall's greatest solos ; KATANGA by Curtis Amy Sextet featuring the work of underrated unknown trumpet player Mr Dupree Bolton; YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO by the Art Pepper Quartet featuring the rhythm section of Mr Miles Davis; THE FOX by the Harold Land Quintet again featuring Mr Dupree Bolton on trumpet;and finally, 2 DEGREES EAST, 3 DEGREES WEST which is a truly beautiful track from a great album by Mr John Lewis called GRAND ENCOUNTERS (Bill Perkins, John Lewis, Jim Hall, Percy Heath, Chico Hamilton). Because there is so much good music on this anthology, it's best to take it a little at a time so rich are its benefits. Once you put on Track One of CD one and hear the palpable excitement of Mr Wardell Gray and Mr Dexter Gordon live, there may, however, be no turning back! GO FOR IT! One of my best buys of 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-07-29

This is a fantastic set. When can we expect another collection

4 out of 5 stars A little taste of the era.......1999-07-08

This collection along with the enclosed notes will help any jazz listener, new or old, to savor a little taste of the era. It may also whet your appetite, as it did mine, for more music from some of the featured artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great sampling of the greatest groups of COOL Jazz.......1999-02-06

Getz, Mulligan, John Lewis, Eric Dolphy, Woody Hermans Herd, Chet Baker (at his best), Cal Tjader - The truly greats of the era play some of the best tunes, like Bernies Tune, and My Funny Valentine, and others of the West Coast phenom! I truly enjoyed the mix and the variety of this monumental package. I consider it a milestone in what may become a revival of really cool sound. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars Marlena Shaw California Soul.......2004-06-10

Oh my god!I feel really ashamed because i have only just heard of Marlena Shaw!she is amazing! It all started when i went to Molokos in Cardiff and i heard California Soul.Ever since then ive been trying to find who invented this masterpiece. It is probably up there with one of my favourite songs ever,it just catches me,i love it.Can't wait to here her other creations!xxx

5 out of 5 stars Aretha Franklin's favorite singer........2003-10-28

One of the great songs of any time from any genre, Marlena let's loose on Woman of the Ghetto. Sampled from djs all over the world, along with California Soul, the originals are perfection. Another favorite among her fans Go Away Little Boy is full of sass and wit. It is great listening pleasure from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Before Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, there was Marlena Shaw.......2003-03-18

As much as I love Jill and Erykah, if Marlena Shaw were to drop an album today, it's no doubt that it would put these two artists' works to shame. Most of Shaw's albums weren't big sellers and some of them are even out of print, so if you want to get started on your search, begin with this collection. As with most "Best of Marlena Shaw" collections, "Yu-Ma/Go Away, Little Boy" appears on here, but other notables like "Could It Be You", "Feel Like Making Love", and a vocal version of the classic "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" are also here. For Gang Starr fans, "California Soul" will sound familiar because this was sampled in the group's 1990 song, "Check the Technique". Check this album out.

4 out of 5 stars tight collection.......2003-01-21

Marlena Shaw is something else. Her&Betty Wright put it down along with Millie Jackson telling it like it is on there Records.Marlena Shaw was the Erka Badu of Her time with real overal&Developed Soul. She just brought the House&Kitchen Sink at you on these songs.this collection is a Really good overview.

4 out of 5 stars Incomplete--Not an "Antholody".......2006-05-20

Lou Rawls had a 30 year career in show business. This disk spans only 20 of those years, and misses the last 10 when he was so productive and had most of his well known hits. I'm not knocking the tracks on this disk, nor the quality, but to me an "Anthology" is a disk which spans an entire career of a singer or group. If this is what you are looking for, you need to buy two disks. Go ahead and get this one, its perfectly fine for what it has, but get The Best Lou Rawls: You'll Never Find a Love Like Mine" which is due out on Amazon on June 6, 2006, and contains his more popular Capitol releases.

5 out of 5 stars THE Chicago Cool.......2006-03-18

Let me say right now that this anthology covers Rawls' career from 1962 until 1970 when he recorded for Capitol Records; those looking for the later Gamble & Huff stuff or his best-known hit "You'll Never Find"; well, you'll never find them here. You will find all kinds of nuggets from the early days though; starting with a previously unreleased version of Sam Cooke's "What Makes The Ending So Sad" with the great Les McCann on piano, then progresses into a couple of cuts from his album "Stormy Monday", again with McCann. The CD, though, really reaches its stride with the six selections taken off 1966's "Lou Rawls Live!" That includes the great monologue "Street Corner Hustler's Blues"; one of a couple of the famous monologues he recorded; on that one he talks about the old days growing up around 47th and what was then South Parkway (now Martin Luther King Drive) on the South Side of Chicago. He snaps out his stories with street-smart prose and as sharp as any rapper, then segues into the appropriate tune, and the audience loves every minute of it.

Later selections on this 2-CD set include cuts taken from albums such as "Lou Rawls Soulin'", (which contained "Love Is A Hurtin' Thing"); "Lou Rawls Carryin' On!", "Too Much", "That's Lou", "Feelin' Good", "You're Good For Me" and a couple others. His distinctive big, soulful voice adds a different feel to even standards like "It Was A Very Good Year", "Stormy Monday" and "Willow Weep For Me". In short, he could sing pretty much anything and make it work. Jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, you name it, and it's all here. He's truly among the giants of all the soul singers, and this CD is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars LOU RAWLS" ANTHOLOGY -- FIRST CLASS COLLECTION .......2005-04-18

The passage of time has made it easy to forget just how big of a star Lou Rawls was back in the 1960s and 1970s. These days, he's probably better known as the host and spokesman of the annual United Negro College Fund (UNCF) telethon, or the voice of Garfield the Cat. But this ANTHOLOGY puts the spotlight on the most important aspect of Lou Rawls' career and that's his mellow and smooth voice and his way with a popular song.
In the 1960s, he was signed to Capitol Records. In fact, he was the label's most important and consistent black male vocalist, next to Nat "King" Cole. This 33 song ANTHOLOGY traces Rawls' maturation as a blues, jazz, soul and pop stylist and brings together many of his biggest hits and musical career highlights from his association with Capitol Records.
One of the most interesting and historically significant tracks io this collection is "What Makes the Ending So Sad," an early composition created for Lou by his friend and former mentor Sam Cooke. the song finds rawls working out of a soul bag that pays more than a few nods to Cooke. The track went unreleased until it was dug out of the vaults for this collection. It's not known whether capitol or rawls suggested he begin reocrding modern blues and jazz tunes, but he was successful with songs like Tobacco Road" and "Stormy Monday Blues," which is included here from a live Lou Rawls album from 1966.
ANTHOLOGY includes about five tracks from LOU RAWLS LIVE, a landmark album, again from 1966, that really helped Rawls cross over to pop audiences and firmly cemented his reputation as a jazz and blues stylist par excellence with his devoted jazz and blues following. That same year, Rawls had his first major hit single with "Love IS A Hurtin Thing," a blues that sold well with pop fans and was a No. 1 record on the nation's soul charts. The follow-up single "You Can Bring Me All of Your Heartaches" is also here, as well as "Dead End Street," a funky soul romper arranged by H.B Barnum that earned rawls his first Grammy. The bass line on this tune is well worth the price of the entire CD. It's that soulful and funky.
Rawls also popularized, the monologue on records. these consisted of colorful stories that he told to set up a tune. Many of them are included on the ANTHOLOGY as they were first heard on soem of Rawls' albums more than 35 years ago.
This collection finds Rawls at his soulful best, his deep rich baritone used most effectively on a variety of tunes including blues and jazz and standards.
The only drawback with this set is that it's not comprehensive and only tells a portion of the Lou Rawls story. It does not include any of the hits he recorded in the 1970s for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records, nor does it feature "A Natural Man" a hit recorded for MGM Records from the early Seventies. But it's still worthwhile and if you want a more complete picture of Lou Rawls' artistry, I suggest you buy it along with some of the other collections on the market like LOVE SONGS, ALL THINGS IN TIME, etc.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-08-14

I listen to Lou Rawls growing up. My father would play his music over and over until I would sing it in my sleep. As an adult I begun to appreciate his music. Lou Rawls is by far one of the best Blues and soul singers around I would recommend this CD to everyone who likes that kind of music.
