Customer Reviews:
RON IS AMAZING! STOP TALKING SMACK!.......2006-08-10
I haven't bought this CD because i have no need.
Ron Wilkins is a personal friend and i will go to bat for him ANY DAY to defend his level of professionalism as a player AND his outstanding personality/character as a human being.
ok. to some guy down below with a musically inflated ego:
I just have one question for you:
can YOU play a full chord or improvise in seven octaves of range on a trombone?
that's what i thought.
I know mr. wilkins personally, and he is an amazing person AND player. i think if you had any truth to back what you said about your "qualifications", you might've identified yourself.
You sound like a lowbrass player that ron beat out of a spot in a symphony who's either REALLY jealous or REALLY bitter.
until i see YOUR resume, don't talk trash about ron.
you have a WHOLE lot of musically inclined people out there who beg to differ with your VERY begative comments, mr.mysterio .
using big fancy words to make college kids that commented on their favorite clinician feel inferior about their musical choice is about as immature as it gets. even if he couldn't do all the crazy jazz that you say he can't, why would you rag on people for LIKING what they LIKE. MUSIC is about DIVERISITY. and EMOTION. NOT about what you say would make sense on a peice of sheetmusic, since apparently that's all you've ever looked at. i'm sure the best improvisational player on earth too, right?
so if you are right, you are far superior to the rest of the musical community who has been greatly deceived by mr.wilkins.
he has all of our respect, be it we were fooled by his trickery or that his true colors really show what one can do with
focus dedication and determination.
and don't brag about your "perfect pitch".
here's the big secret:you might not be the ONLY ONE ON EARTH who can hear that.
get over yourself and find a good mirror the next time you wanna pick on a hypocritical musician.
Awesome Music; Wonderful Man!.......2004-06-20
I don't know how anyone could have anything bad to say about this cd. I've owned it for several years now, and it amazes me everytime I hear it. I know Ron personally and have since I was knee high to him. He's a wonderful person, and an absolutely wonderful musician! It appalled me to read other reviews claiming that he cannot improvise. You cannot judge a person's improvisation skills by listening to a cd... it's impossible to do so. You really have to hear the person live to truly see how they improvise. Also, you should never base your reviews or criticisms on a person's ability to play live on another's experience. I am sure that people who have more than 20 years musical experience would agree that Ron Wilkins has incredible talent and wonderful "stage presence." In fact, I know so, because I know several musical professors for the University of Texas feel that he's sensational and his ability is one which normal people only DREAM of accomplishing. And if he ever begs for money, he's justified in doing so, as being a professional musician is his occupation. He has no side job... To prove that I am not biased, I have studied music at the University of Texas, as well as being an accomplished musician for more than 20 years on clarinet, percussion, guitar, and piano. I have also given lessons for years to young musicians in the area.
Wilkins cannot improvise, SORRY........2004-03-26
I'm sure Ron is a nice guy and everything, but he just doesn't know how to improvise. SORRY. The man can't blow changes. The other negative reviews were right, and I'm sorry I didn't see them before plunking down $17 for this CD. I like trombone for jazz but there's too many cats who just can't cut it. He is one of the many in that category.
To any of the non-improvising people out there who disagree, take this test: listen to what he plays in his solos and when he's not going "dickee-dickee-dickee" on non-pitches, take down his solo on music staff paper. TRANSCRIBE IT. If you can. If you are intelligent enough to know or hear the chord changes being played behind Wilkins at the time, then you will know what all serious musicians know and can IMMEDIATELY hear- that he has not done his homework and is FOOLING all of those positive reviewers. He plays almost no correct notes most of the time and is relying on the extreme high buzzing chops to distract people. JJ, Andy Martin, McChesney, Curtis Fuller and Steve Turre never stoop to this silliness.
And if you cannot HEAR that he is blowing junk or don't possess the skill to transcribe and notate pitch and rhythm, ACCEPT that others more knowledgeable than you just might be RIGHT.
Music is one of those things where people can rave about stuff that's so bad that if it was a car, NO ONE would ever pay for it. But the average white consumer with tin ears and negligible rhythm is fooled by anything that they are told is good. And if a musician like Wilkins is constantly playing BAD notes, I can't call them a GOOD musician. You wouldn't call a mechanic who couldn't fix your car a genius if he just ACTED like he REALLY knew what he was doing, would you?
By the way, I will be reselling my copy of this album on amazon.com, and I hope I can get every penny back. Another thing-- Ron's singing is really embarrassing to sit through. Some people have no shame, I guess. But then I heard from a friend about a jazz club in Texas called the Landing where the band goes around the patio with a hat BEGGING the people eating dinner for tips..........turns out it was Wilkins' band, and it was him on trombone that night...(we checked the name of the group and the schedule on the Internet to be sure)....not surprising, I guess. Also it was reported by the eyewitness that Wilkins performed in a muscle shirt that night...and waved his trombone slide over my friend's food while he was toodling.....he sang Wonderful World twice in one set, too.......
My qualifications a reviewer of MUSIC?
MA in composition, 20 years teaching, performing (saxes), composing for TV and corporate commercials. I have perfect pitch, too-- if it might help those without it to UNDERSTAND.
Can't wait for the next disc!!.......2004-02-17
Ron is a monster bone player that I have had the honor to hear in person for many years in San Antonio, whenever I attend an annual music convention. He displays a great flexibility, outlandish range, and just a velvet-like tone on both tenor and bass trombone. He is a tremendous human being as well, just a super guy, with absolutely no hang-ups, which I think is very cool. If you are ever in town; check him out, and BUY THIS CD !!!! I promise that you will be glad you did!!!
One of the FEW trombone JAZZ MASTERS!!!.......2001-10-25
Ron possesses several gifts. He is a master trombone player that can captivate the audience with his singing and playing ability. He is also a featured EDWARDS clinician and tours world, sharing his talent. The CD is truely a TRIBUTE to the masters... and should be heard by ALL trombone lovers!
