Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1963 I Have a Dream speech is one of the most spectacular speeches in history. It's also one of the most musical examples of modern oratory. The London tenor saxophonist Denys Baptiste transcribed King's words and phrases from that speech into a four-part suite. Baptiste fronts a large international ensemble, which includes some of his mates from the Jazz Jamaica All Stars. Interspersed with the celebrated Nigerian poet Ben Okri's poem, "Mental Fight," this opus is an impressive mélange of many genres. "I Have a Dream" alternately swings between a waltzy meter and an Afro-Cuban groove. "With This Faith" is straight outta Charles Mingus's "Better Git Hit in Yo' Soul," the title track is imbued with some stark, Trane-ish tones, and "Free at Last," brilliantly concludes this wonderful work. Like Sonny Rollins's Freedom Suite and Max Roach's We Insist!, this masterpiece proves that justice and jazz do mix. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

What would you listen to if you had no fear?.......2007-04-25
What would you play if you had no fear? What would you listen to if you didn't have to explain it to the others, to your family, to your boss? It would sound like jazz. Let freedom ring. Let play it and listen to "Omega" in particular. Give you an opportunity.
jazzlover314.......2006-03-10
This is a great CD. I listen to it over and over and it just gets better everytime. I've been meaning to pick up some Jackie McLean since I first heard his Right Now album back in the 70's and I'm delighted. He is so inventive and creative. Another strong influence ont he CD is the drumer Billy Higgins. Somehow every thing he does seems to bring out the best in the other players.
Let Freedom Ring.......2005-03-01
Being that I'm a huge fan of Jackie McLean's straight-ahead hard bop sessions, I didn't think I would like this session when I picked it up. After popping this disc into my cd player when I got home, I could tell from the first few seconds of "Melody for Melonae" that I couldn't have been more wrong. This is definitely one of McLean's best, which says a lot since his discography is so vast. After hearing this session, you will probably wonder why the quartet on the four tracks (McLean, Walter Davis, Jr. on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums) did not become a working group because they work so well together! All four tracks on this masterpiece are gems and there's not one I favor over the others. They are all different and good in their own way. Three of the four tunes ("Melody for Melonae", "Rene", and "Omega") are originals written by Jackie. Interestingly enough, those three tunes are all written about members of McLean's family ("Melody for Melonae" is about his daughter, "Rene" is about his son, and "Omega is about his mother. That can probably explain why his playing seems to be filled with such emotion during the duration of these tracks. "I'll Keep Loving You", the other track on this cd, is a rarely-done Bud Powell ballad. All of those people who consider McLean to be too rough of an alto player will change their minds immediately after hearing the coda on this track. His playing is so tender that it kills me every time I hear it! All four of the members of this ensemble are highlighted throughout, but this is definitely McLean's show and is one of the most personal albums he ever produced. So if you're a McLean fan, a fan of Coltrane, Shorter, or Coleman, or just dig jazz with feeling, then order this gem immediately!
Jackies break from conventional hard-bop.......2004-03-28
This record is, IMO, McLeans first really good record. McLean was a bebop veteran but unlike most of his colleagues he didn't put down Ornette Colemans innovations and this record shows that influence. McLean had recorded several albums before this one but they were in a conventional hard-bop mode, a style I'm not so fond of. McLeans best earlier playing was instead on Mingus-records like "Picanthropos Erectus" and the incredible "Blues and Roots (one of the best records ever made-listen to "Moanin"!!!). Mingus encouraged McLeans original, intense slightly out-of-tune playing and asked him to cut back on the Be-bop cliches. The first song on this album shows a great extension of the style on Mingus tracks like "Love chant". First the great theme (which doesn't sound hard-bop at all!!!), then an amazingly intense bluesy saxophone solo over a two-chord piano vamp with great drumming by Bill Higgins (of Ornette Colemans early group). Amazing stuff and one of my favourite McLean performances. Next comes a KILLER rendition of a Bud Powell ballad that is the highlight of the album IMO. McLeans playing is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. The next song, "Rene", features another long sax solo that almost wholly consists of pure blues-cliches. This may sound boring but the way McLean distorts and play with the well-known phrases saves it from being dull. Last is "Omega", a three-part number which, again, is awesome. While this record isn't as original as "Destination Out" or other albums in that vein, it's just as good. It's records like this that makes you want to go out and buy a saxophone and just BLOW!!!
one of my favorite Mclean cd's.......2004-01-30
Trying to pigeonhole this music is not an easy task, and maybe it is not necessary. Mclean grew up listening to Parker, and always retains some bebop in his playing. But, later influences, of Mingus and then Ornette Coleman, have encouraged him to find his own style. So he ventured on new territories and made some good music in the process.
This is not free jazz, because rhythmically Mclean is closer to bebop and hard bop, and because of Walter Davis' presence on the piano. What this music IS, is very expressive, original, and rich. Mclean is not a genious improvisor on the level of Coleman, Dolphy or Parker. But he has a lot to say, and a very attracrive way of saying it.
The four tracks are all interesting, and I especially like the first and the last. Sometimes it is obvious that Mclean goes into the high pitched shrieks involuntarily, as a result of his powerful blowing, but chooses to stay with them and add them as legitimate sounds.
It is interesting to note that the name of the cd is taken from the "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, which was made a full year after the music was recorded. Since it is unlikely that King borrowed from Mclean, I suppose the album was named and released a long while after it was recorded.

Customer Reviews:
Classic postbop jazz.......2002-06-09
This album represents Jackie McLean's attempt to assimilate the "new thing" into his music. It's not a free jazz album by any means but it does escape the constricting confines of changes-based bop playing for a more pared-down kind of playing. It's basically a very personal hybrid of modal jazz & the more intuitive, directly emotional playing of Ornette Coleman. The compositions are all connected to people in McLean's life: "Melody for Melonae" & "Rene" concern his children, "Omega" is the middle name of his mother, & "I'll Keep Loving You" is a ballad by Bud Powell, whom McLean had worked with & who was in the middle of his final decline which led to his death a few years later. McLean's tone & playing have never been better caught on tape: the enormous biting sound with its idiosyncratic pitching, the hard-swinging, buttonholing solo lines, occasionally decorated with freak whistle notes; the ability to sustain extremely long solos without a falling-off of invention or power; the extraordinary out-of-tempo setpieces. Indeed, the completely out-of-tempo "I'll Keep Loving You" actually anticipates the kind of force Albert Ayler would put into a ballad, years before Ayler cut his first ESP disc. The other three tracks are (once the heads are stated) uptempo & mostly upbeat in feel, with "Rene" a particularly joyous performance.
The other reason to get this disc is the late Billy Higgins--this is possibly the best performance of his I've heard on disc, & perhaps not even on the classic Ornette Coleman sides does he play as well as this. -- Herbie Lewis is very good on bass, not a player I've encountered elsewhere. Walter Davis is usually thought of as a mainstream bop pianist of the 2nd rank; he plays very well here, though is perhaps slightly superfluous. (McLean even in his most adventurous mode usually liked to keep the piano, which gives his music a more grounded feel than Coleman's had, or Coltrane's for that matter [Tyner usually comped only minimally or laid out during Coltrane's extended solos].)
A marvellous album, which belongs in any serious collection of postwar jazz.
A transitional album.......2002-01-12
Mr. McLean was working in a new idiom on this album, and he seems hesitant about using it. His phrases are often shorter and more repetitive than the phrases in the solos on earlier and later albums, which suggests to me he was unsure about how to continue his phrases. The solos are also marred occasionally by gratuitous sustained trills and honking. I've got nothing against key-wiggling or honking in their place, but they're out of place in the solos here, and they again leave the impression that he was sometimes at a loss about what to play next, especially as he doesn't wiggle keys or honk in the earlier and later work of his that I'm familiar with.
But I've never met a Jackie McLean album I didn't like. A bad album by Jackie McLean is better than most other people's good albums. This one is certainly worth 4 stars and the [money] I paid for it, and the shipping. But if this is the first Jackie McLean album you've ever heard, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Fresh and Timeless passion for you.......2001-11-17
If you enjoy finding one of those timeless, fresh jazz recordings, then Let Freedom Ring is the one you have been looking for. If you were to combine Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane into one person playing an alto instead of a tenor, this may be the sound you would hear. To further that I would say that this record is one that would fall directly between Sonny's The Bridge and Coltane's A Love Supreme in terms of passion and imagination. To analize this recording would seem almost criminal, just like I believe it is not in good taste to analize, A love Supreme or The Bridge. Records like these are love, passion and strength, put in tangible forms for us mortals only to enjoy. So listen and enjoy. You'll thank god for Jazz once again.
One of the greatest jazz albums ever.......2001-09-13
March 19,1962 was a big day for Blue Note records. On this day,Jackie McLean was to record one of the greatest sessions of the label, and maybe simply of the jazz history.Walter Davis Jr plays piano,Herbie Lewis plays bass, and the immense Billy Higgins, who died a few weeks ago, shines behind his drums.Speaking of Higgins,I'd like another reviewer to explain why he uses the words of "the infamous Ornette Coleman quartet" in his review.I really would like to know what is infamous in Ornette's music;disturbing, certainly;curious, breaking all the landmarks in music, of course;unbearable for some, yes, and it took me years to listen to Ornette's Atlantic recordings, and still now, I'm not a great addict, except on some tunes. But why "infamous"???There are only four tunes in this record; a beautiful ballad written by Bud Powell ("I'll keep on loving you"),and three McLean's originals: "Omega" was written for his mother,Ms Alpha Omega McLean,"René" for his son,who plays saxophone, and the haunting "melody for Melonae",dedicated to his six-years old daughter, at the time of the recording."melody for Melonae" is a tune that will really cast a spell on you.Something unbelievable,an outstanding cry of love that will leave you breathless.Only for this tune,McLean would have reached the highest level of the musical history. His playing is as moving,as emotional as Billie's singing or Pres' playing.Really an amazing moment of music.Higgins' drumming is,of course, absolutely superlative all through the record.Maybe you'll call it "free jazz",maybe you'll call it "swing",I don't care;the 13 minutes and 20 seconds of "melody for Melonae" are just some of the most essential minutes of this music called jazz,a music of love and freedom.
Liberating sounds from stunning saxophonist.......2001-06-02
Let Freedom Ring might be Jackie McLean's single most important recording. "Melody For Melonae", written for his daughter, builds on urgent, intense saxohone statements that draw more on the sweeping power of Sonny Rollins' tenor than on the melodic mannerisms of Charlie Parker's alto. Not very far into his explorations, the influence of Ornette Coleman begins to make itsef felt.
Arguably, Ornette Coleman may be the most pervasive influence on the album. Let Freedom Ring was recorded just a year after the remarkable series of albums for Contemporary and Atlantic that Coleman had made between 1958 and 1961. McLean explores extreme tonalities and fractured post-bop scales associated with the so-called "free jazz" that Coleman had almost self-consciously founded. The often frenzied -but never excessive- interplay between Herbie Lewis and Billy Higgins is reminiscent of the role Higgins himself and Charlie Haden played on Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come.
But McLean's own voice is so distinctive and charismatic that it anticipates the ideas of sound that musicians such as Archie Shepp, Roscoe Mitchell and Albert Ayler would explore a few years later during the brief life of the "New Thing". There are moments when McLean stretches his notes so passionately that his cries could be mistaken for the possessed, squeaking, screeching wails of Albert Ayler.
There are four tracks, including a searing rendition of Bud Powell's "I'll Keep Loving You". The others are all McLean originals. The real achievement is probably the closing piece, "Omega", which McLean dedicates to his mother. It combines a swing as vigorous as that of the previous piece, "René", with an ardent search for the essence of the theme, expressed in inflexions that subtly modulate from anger to joy, from pain to ecstasy, from hasty expectation to grateful liberation.
