5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

5 out of 5 stars Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09

It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

4 out of 5 stars cd reviews.......2006-01-15

this cd was very good, much recommended

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Louis Hardin, known to pre-Watergate New Yorkers as the blind street musician Moondog, is also a fascinating and sui generis composer. This disc collects 1969 recordings of his orchestral works and 1972 small-group recordings of the two-minutes-and-under "rounds and canons" that are his most influential work. Janis Joplin covered his "All Is Loneliness," you can hear foreshadowings of Stereolab in his "Madrigals," and you only need to hear "Theme" to hear how profoundly he influenced Michael Nyman. Simple and beautiful, Moondog's rounds owe as much to the swing he heard on the radio in his youth as to Bach's canonical structures, and they vary as little and as much as roses in a row. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Admirable communion with life.......2007-04-26

Blind he is our Moondog, but he does not bark for pity. He listens to and reproduces what he can capture with his ears. That means his work is a tremendous compilation of sounds from the real world, animals or just insects, his own baby and his own wife, or just some beating on a drum, or the frail dancing of a pipe along with a frog and a cricket. It is this extreme patchwork of sounds, voices, noise and music under the light enchantment from the moon that our artist is imagining in his eternal night. At least for him the moon never sets, never disappears over or behind the hills. "Surf Session" is the only piece that has some real length. The sea surf, the sea waves, the breaking of these waves we imagine along some pebbly seaside give a strange depth to the very both Asian and tremendously romantic music that manages to float forever over the rather powerful vortex of the sea, the ocean. The nearly Chinese constant grace-notes give the music a charm that is both discrete and so strong we seem to be able to imagine some Last Emperor advancing in the Forbidden City just before defeating his beleaguered wife and sons under the sign of some golden flower. The "Street Scene" is less fascinating because it is aimless, it lacks a direction and a destination? "I must never follow you and you must never follow me." He is roaming on and on, around and around, in that incessant, menacing, mechanical noise that comes up from the New York street locked up in between the walls of surrounding buildings. Can that be life? And what can it sound like to a blind man? Is it worse or less violent than what the famous Arthur Miller's Salesman felt, heard and experienced in his trapped two storied house in the middle of surrounding skyscrapers and under the crushing noise of thousands of motor vehicles? We will never know, except if we decide to do what dipus did when he realized his criminal inability to see the fate that was his. And he lived ever after like a dog in the eternal night of his blindness remembering the moonshine and the sunshine, tolerating the insults and petty assaults from those whose yes are not bleeding dead.

Louis T. Hardin did not graduate from the Juliard. He went to a school in Iowa and Memphis, but was mostly self taught. Listen to this with your eyes closed.

5 out of 5 stars Eccentric Centrist.......2003-12-14

Odd-ball individuals are more common than geniuses, but Moondog is both. Harry Partch had the highest regard for this blind graduate of Julliard, whose fantastic get-up of skins, furs and horns might have detracted from the impact of less seminal music. Since he was immensely tall, he made quite an apparition. Moondog's primitivo get-up was odd, to say the least, but since Moondog was blind, one wonders who put the costume together. Moondog, like Harry, invented most of the instruments he played standing on the corener at the Avenue of the Americas. His music reaches back into prehistory in its effect, and has a kindness to it, if that may be a reasonable thing to say. Later, Moondog became sort of a darling of the avant garde, and composed for traditional instruments, but the earlier the recorded work, the more deep down and pure it was. The later work is slicker, but just as intelligent.

The debate will never stop raging between those who prefer Richard Rodgers's early work with Lorenz Hart and those partial to his later collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein. The shows of the two partnerships were so different that there's almost no resolution possible, but the themes on this CD prove that Rodgers wrote memorable melodies in very different styles during his career. Even if you prefer, say, Pal Joey, it's hard to deny the majestic allure of Carousel and The King and I. With the Rodgers & Hammerstein canon readily available on CD, this album is notable for two things. The first is that by focusing exclusively on overtures, and by presenting them in chronological order, it offers a quick survey of some of Rodgers's best-known melodies. The second is that it includes two rare pieces: the first recording of the overture from 1953's Me and Juliet and the overture from Pipe Dream, a 1955 show based on John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row that was Rodgers & Hammerstein¹s biggest failure. Those two alone make it worthwhile for R&H fans to pick up the album. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rodgers is one of the greatest theatre composers..........2002-10-06

When people think about legends in musical theatre, ranking high at the top would be Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Jule Styne, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. But no list would be complete with the celebrated collaborators Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. For this recording, conductor John Mauceri decided to perform the overtures to Rodgers and Hammerstein's shows. A lot of work went into this, considering 2 of the shows didn't have the conventional overture and another was a film score. R&H first worked together in 1943 on the show "Oklahoma!" which became a monstrous sensation, running for 2,212 performances in its initial Broadway run and forever becoming a musical theatre icon. The overture has been heard over the years on various recordings - the Original Broadway album (considered to be the true original Broadway cast recording), etc. Even more thrilling is finally getting the full eight minute "Carousel Waltz" in its original orchestrations. I saw a reconstruction of the entire score at Carnegie Hall on June 6, 2002 with Audra McDonald and Hugh Jackman and there was lengthy applause for this piece - which is my nomination for the greatest waltz written in the 20th century (with every other beloved Rodgers waltz coming in close behind.) The suite from State Fair proposes what could be a stage overture for the show (its eventual Broadway attempt was unfortunately a flop). Its interesting to hear the first recording of the "Allegro" overture - something that was not included on the original cast album. The show is one of the 3 flops that the team experienced in their career together. "South Pacific" is presented unedited (and its so wonderful to hear everything) and "The King and I" is another joy. "Me and Juliet" is also another one of the flops - its overture is the type that will leave you wondering why it wasn't successful (I especially the enjoy the Latin influence.) Then we come to a personal favorite - the least successful Rodgers and Hammerstein show - "Pipe Dream", based on John Steinbeck's novel "Sweet Thursday", a sequel to "Cannery Row". I have a fondness for this show and its score (the libretto is admittedly weak and bland - missing what Steinbeck had intended for it). But the full overture (it was cut in half on the RCA album) is a joy - featuring "The Man I Used to Be", "All At Once You Love Her" and what sounds like a true showstopper "Sweet Thursday". (These are the strongest numbers in the show) I personally think that with a reconceived & rewritten script and a few lyric alterations, this could be the hit it should've been in 1955. Definitely a candidate to be revisited. The next overture has been available for years - "Cinderella". On this recording, the 1965 version is used, which was far superior to the original 1957 version and should be used in any stage production of the show today. "Flower Drum Song" is not the original Broadway overture - it is the national tour overture. For the tour, Rodgers decided that "I Enjoy Being a Girl", undeniably the show's lasting standard, be included in the opening, meaning the loss of "Like a God". Finally we reach the 11th and final show - "The Sound of Music". Onstage, the show opens with a chorus of nuns singing Gregorian chant, however the creative team behind this recording decided to subsitute the rarely heard Entr'acte of the show, which gives you an idea of what an overture might have been for this show, had the composers decided on a traditional opening. They also tacked on an arrangement of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" at the end of the piece. All in all, this is a great documentation - and hearing the music symphonically performed makes it 100 times better than ever. Mauceri sure picked a real winner here, folks. Definitely worth the money for true Rodgers and Hammerstein fans.

5 out of 5 stars Something Wonderful!.......2002-03-25

To borrow a title from one of the great songs penned by R&H -- this album of overtures from some of their greatest as well as lesser hits really is something wonderful! Oklahoma, Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music are all represented. But so are Allegro, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella, and Flower Drum Song; shows perhaps not as well known, but all containing the gorgeous melodies of Richard Rodgers. Oscar Hammerstein's words are not heard -- at least on the album -- but they're so ingrained into most of our psyches that it's impossible not to 'hear' them in your head. Most of the overtures are presented in their original orchestrations by the genius Richard Russel Bennett. Wouldn't it be great to see some of these shows restaged -- including the 'ones that got away' like Allegro and Pipe Dream? And wouldn't it be equally great to hear some of today's singers cover the R&H classics along with some all but forgotten gems (e.g., "The Loneliness of Evening," orginally written for South Pacific, but cut and subsequently incorporated into the 1965 version of Cinderella) that are every bit as beautiful as the more popular R&H compositions. This is a super album for any R&H fan or any fan of beautiful music.

3 out of 5 stars A little too much and poor sound quality.......2006-11-10

Even though this was recorded just a couple of years ago the sound quality is not that good. It sounds like it was recorded in the 70s and outside with the microphones far away. There is nothing too deep here and all the fanfares are fairly short, just lasting a few seconds it seems. I got tired of this pretty quickly and it doesn't stand up to repeated listenings and to be honest a lot of the stuff on here sounds the same. The performances are ok, but nothing special, they sound kind of flat, and they don't really do anything to make this sound exciting like it should. Maybe if the performance and sound was better I would of enjoyed this more.

5 out of 5 stars And now, honored ladies and gentlemen, may we present...!.......2003-07-17

This is what you'd have to call a specialty CD. It consists entirely of fanfares--nothing but fanfares--some of them as short as 10 seconds long. An interesting idea for a CD, perhaps, but I would guess it is primarily for directors of costume dramas, period pieces, and ceremonies of various sorts.

There are 76 fanfares on the disc covering composers ranging from Monteverdi to a trio of modern composers, all of the latter associated with the CD itself. They are played by an outfit called 'The Art of the Trumpet,' a coalescence of 24 Austrian trumpeters and a couple of timpanists (and on occasion a single trombone). Some of the fanfares use the whole group, there are others for solo trumpet, and for all combinations in between. They are led by a trumpeter from Vienna named Leonhard Leeb who is not only one of the trumpeters but also one of the composers--the other two modern composers are Leon Bolten and Joel Modart (I almost typed 'Mozart' but no!...).

Other composers include Salieri, Lully, Biber, J.H. Schmelzer, Pezel (often spelled Petzel here in America), Philidor (yes, the chess master of that name), Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and the multi-talented A. Nony Mous.

The performances are appropriately stirring, ceremonial, attention-grabbing, even mournful (one, Bolten's 'Wrapped in Mystery,' was dedicated to the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001). I would strongly suggest you not listen to the whole CD at one sitting--actually, it's hard to imagine anyone would--because too much B flat can fry your brain unless you yourself are a brass player or bagpiper.

For what it is, though, this CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure!.......2005-10-24

This is a fabulous album of consummate big band artistry that just boils over with sheer exuberance. The arrangements, musicianship, and the sense that the musicians had a ball doing this album make it a little known but vitally important example of the genre.
NOTE: I had to wait about 3 months for my copy to arrive. It's an import and can be hard to get. But it was well worth hanging in there, and I'm delighted with it. Exceeds all expectations, and gets played constantly. Even my 24 year old daughter finds it a great listen.

5 out of 5 stars Albam's best?.......2005-02-21

Taken as a whole, this just might be Manny Albam's best recording; it is one of my favorite of his anyway. "Bristling" is absolutely terrific, a real up-tempo cooker with excellent brush work by drummers Osie Johnson and Ted Sommer. Also very good is "Dancers on Drums." But everything here clicks and it's a lot of fun to listen to. Highly recommended.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.
