Since the start of his career in the mid-1950s, pianist Gene Harris has been stereotyped as a soul-jazz pianist by virtue of his influential work with the Three Sounds, which helped define the genre until the group's breakup in 1970. But Harris's playing, while enormously soulful, funky, and gospel-flavored, has always been much more than just that one style. Recorded live in December 1998, Alley Cats captures his topnotch band live in full flight at Seattle's Jazz Alley with guests Red Holloway on tenor sax, Ernie Watts on alto sax, Jack McDuff on organ, and Harris's daughter Niki on vocals. The opening cut, a funkified version of the Crusaders' "Put It Where You Want It," is what listeners have come to expect from Harris, a rollicking workout that shows off his blues-inflected playing to delightful effect. From there the album reveals some of the pianist's other colors, from the Afro-Caribbean beat of "Magic Lady" to Benny Golson's down-home "Blues March" and Watts's bebop tip to Charlie Parker, "Bird's Idea." Jack McDuff's solo on Harris's swinging "Walkin' with Zach," and Niki Harris's moving rendition of "You've Changed" only further the evidence that these were indeed a couple of red-hot nights in Seattle. --Ezra Gale

Listen up and Listen Here.......2000-12-14
This is my second purchase of this CD. One for the house and one for the auto. This is a live performance with 2 vocal numbers by Gene's daughter, Nikki. Very powerful singing from her, also emotional when you consider this was their last gig together (Gene passed away this February of kidney failure.)
Get this CD for the live jammin take of Listen Here. It grooves and makes folks ask who that is playing there. Gene, as always, is the man. It hurt to learn he was gone but he left us fabulous memories of his last performance at Jazz Alley.
"he's the funkiest cat - Gene Harris!".......2000-11-10
The music might be old, but still has power and ability to move you, that's what Gene Harris and his cats - "Alley Cats" deliver. Harris personal stamp issues directly from '40s glories of boogie-woogie from greats Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, Earl "Fatha" Hines and of course the great Fats Waller. Gene demonstrates in genuine abundance, he is no imitation, but an original as this album declares.
Jazz lovers, if you like soulful, bluesy, swingin', hard-bopping, funky - which best describes the two-fisted jazz piano stylings of Harris, with real-groovin', rock-solid quartet which was captured live at Seattle's Jazz Alley...listen while they tear it up on this jam session of funky, soul-jazz and hard bop tunes.
All these hip-cats dig deep in gospel, blues, breezy latin and right-from-the-gut swing, leaving a broad jazz trail of music that moves you to no end...so you can't help but feel the groove!
Total Time: 68:06 on 10 Tracks...Concord Jazz 4859...(1999)
Gene Harris delivers again.......2000-07-09
Alley Cats is typical and funky Gene Harris. The upbeat piano master works the ivories as no one else can. His daughter Nikki delivers some nice vocal work, although I'd prefer to just listen to Gene play the piano. If you like Gene Harris, you should like Alley Cats.
Gene delivers again!.......2000-07-09
Gene Harris has delivered again! Good Job!
We love this CD!.......2000-01-03
We love this CD, and it is quickly becoming one of our favorites. It is upbeat, and fast-moving, without taking over our whole house the way some music does. It is very popular on the jazz program that we listen to also.

Alley Cats are the best for acapella - and this is their best album.......2006-10-25
The Alley Cats are masters of their art. If you like acapella, doo-wop, standards, etc, this is the place to get a great collection of favorite songs. These guys always do a great job, but this album really brings together many of their best songs.
My personal favorites are Only You and So Much In Love - two songs that bring out the heart of that era. Those songs have never sounded better.
One of the two best a-capella albums I ever heard!.......2005-01-31
So what is the second best a-capella album I ever heard? That would be "Doo Wop Till You Drop" by the Mighty Echoes. These two albums are heads and tails above the rest. Once you have listened to these versions, you'll realize that they contain the most pure, the most polished, and the most authentic doo wop sound you've ever heard. And best of all, every nuance from the original version is retained! Other rival doo wop groups can harmonize, but usually lack a top notch soloist. Trust me on this one! You'll love "Strike Three" and "Doo Wop Till You Drop" so much, you'll be tempted to buy a more powerful stereo just so you can crank these songs to a new level! Honorable mention goes to a group called "Neighbor's Complaint" who give authentic dead-on impersonations of songs such as "A Thousand Miles Away", "Two Kinds of People" and "Trickle Trickle" in Acapella form.

We were out last weekend at a fair in Miami Fl. when we first heard the alley cats. We stayed for all three of their shows. We were so impressed with them that we had to buy all three of their c d's. I think my wife, a person not easy to impress, has not stop listening to the three cd's for more than an hour sense we got them. She is also telling everybody she meets about them. I think we as a world need a harmony as good as THE ALLEY CATS. Thank for your time and God bless, Mr. BOB
6 Stars, the BEST DOO WOP album EVER.......2001-10-26
I don't know how they do it, these guys just keep getting better. I finally got to see them live and they are even better live. I can't wait to see them again next year. If you love music of any kind buy this CD, you won't be dissapointed!
Strike Three.......2000-12-28
This is the third album from the Alley Cats and it is a great one. They really show their talent on this album. From Phil's high tenor voice to Royce's deep bass it it truly enjoyable. Then add John and mando to the mix and there is something for everyone's listening pleasure. They take you back to the days of rock and roll and don't miss a beat. When listening to the Alley cats music, you just have to sing along. They seem to really enjoy what they do. They are serious about their music, but add some fun into each song. If you have ever met the alley cats, you know how much fun they can be. Once you become a fan, you have to have more alley cat music. They just keep providing it. Listening to their music on a daily basis is a necessity. All of their albums are fantastic. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
Everyone who loves doo wop, accapella, rock & roll or just great music should buy "Strike Three". It will be an addition to your music collection you will enjoy for years to come.
My favorites on this album are get a job, silhouettes, remember then, twilight time, earth angel, so much in love. All of the tracks are great however. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent acapella music.......2006-10-25
I've seen the Alley Cats sing in person and absolutely love their music. One of their signature songs is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" - I've not seen anyone who can bring that song to life quite like they do. Many of the classic songs on the CD are favorites by individual preference. I loved "Come Go With Me" so much that I had it played just after my husband and I were pronounced man and wife. It's a darling love song that is great for celebrating a new beginning. This is simply fun music.

This is one 'must have' CD!.......2000-08-26
The Alley Cats are by far the best accapella Doo-Wop group around! They are funny, witty, and the tight vocals of these fabulous foursome make for a great music experience. Everyone fom young to old can enjoy this lively, upbeat sound. This CD is by far the most played CD I own! Tears On My Pillow is a tender ballad great for slow dancing to. Their unique version of Love Potion #9 (my favorite) shows just what kind of talent this group posesses. This CD is great for parties and get togethers because it's music everyone will enjoy. When you hear this CD you will want to sing along! Trust me!

Stray Cat Strut. Yeeees Indeeed !.......2005-10-12
From the first track Stray Cat Strut, this album really strut. It`s simple rockabilly stripped to the bone. Here are all the early best from the Stray Cats. Go further to Rock this town, make you think that rockabilly really lives. The 80 ths was the best Stray Cats period of the "simple bear boned" rock and roll. It`s the soundpicture with bass, guitar, and a simple drum set up who realy does it. This music is not clean and squeaky, but have the roots from early music from the Sun Records. This is also inspired from Gene Vincent and Eddie Cockran, and Brian Setzer vocal realy fits the music. But i also like the titles of some of the songs: Built for speed, Rebels Rules, and Rock this town. The alcapella song I won`t stand in your way, is a real treat for Brian Setzer fans, old and new.
But my all time Stray Cat Strutter is also on this album:
It`s called: Jeanie,Jeanie,Jeanie, and it realy kicks ass man.
Rockabilly rules, man.
