Living Daylights are a much-compacted powerhouse, a lean trio of Seattle-based jazz players who've been privy to electric fusion as much as bebop. Saxophonist Jessica Lurie (of the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet) plays tight-lipped long lines when Arne Livingston's electric bass is in the spotlight, but Lurie also blows away scales with fervor when the trio is romping across freer-sounding jazz-scapes. The group prefers the faster, hoppier end of the electric jazz scale, managing to hit on the "one" even while spinning in frenetic cycles. But they also conjure the Balkan region with tunes like "Trauma and Discourse," with drummer Dale Fanning playing polyrhythms that dizzy the ear during Lurie's alto sax-led melodic contortions. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome, energetic acid jazz.......2001-02-20

I have yet to hear the album, but I saw them live in Seattle. Living Daylights kinda defies categorization, but they excel at fusing acid jazz with bass-heavy funk and scorching bebop that doesn't stray too far from the overall structure of the music. Highly energetic, outstandingly talented and with truly innovative fusion streaks. One to watch out for, and certainly one to buy for a change from the usual schlock.

I can't quit listening to this CD, the only time it comes out of my CD changer is when I bring the CD to the car! If you've been getting bored with jazz, bored with pop, just BORED with current music, this is really the CD for you. These musicians are having FUN, and it really shows. Jessica Lurie's sax lines spin into a seductive chaos, and they ride over rock-solid bass and percussion. There's enough ear candy here to last you for a long time... Jaco bass, Klezmer influences, multiphonics, harmonies you've never heard. BUY THIS DISC.
