These early electrical recordings show a very different Pablo Casals from the grunting old man most people remember. At the height of his technical and musical powers, he plays these mostly charming little encores and transcriptions with exquisite musicianship and breathtaking technical command that remains outstanding today. Whether you want to hear Chopin piano pieces or Wagner arias played on the cello is another issue; there is very little real cello music on this disc. But for what is here, one could hardly imagine better performances. The transfers are outstandingly lifelike, the program very generous (76:19), the price reasonable. --Leslie Gerber

3 out of 5 stars Pablo Casals: Early Recrdings, a defective product.......2007-03-09

The Pablo Casals: Early Recordings 1925-1928 is a fine recording with a production defect. The playing is obviously great but near the end of the CD numerous tracks are missing. I returned the CD and was sent a replacement that had the same defect indicating that there was a production error.

5 out of 5 stars It is good!!.......2005-10-09

I can't buy it in the Austerlia, and it is a good recording. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing touch of personality.......2005-01-25

This album is perhaps one of my favorite. It features Pablo playing some very romantic and melancholic songs from various composers. It also features Pablo's amazing technique and his capacity of interpretation which gies beyond just reading and playing musical notes.
But also, the fact that this album was recorded so long ago, the original format was gramophone, I think it gives this album very important historical value, the background noise never interrupts the musics, but help listeners to get involved and place himself in the timeline.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-10-20

funny, I hear plenty of "real" music coming from this CD ;)

4 out of 5 stars amazing Casals.......2002-04-07

This recording is for anyone who has dismissed Casals as an ancient cellist who never truly mastered the technique of the instrument. These works are all admittedly light fluff, but Casals is truly dazzling, as both a technical virtuoso and a true musician. This is worth owning if you're a cellist or a Casals fan, but the low quality of the actual compositions should keep everyone else away.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Interpretations, some seldom recorded.........2006-05-09

I basically agree with the other reviewers, although I still think that some of the preludes were recorded at odd tempos..but maybe his sheet music is more authentic than mine, since there are new Ponce manuscripts being dug up and published now..
That aside, Holzman is a great player and a very good Ponce interpreter. The other reviewers failed to note that some of these pieces are very hard to find another recording of, and many are probably premiere recordings, the Courante for instance..I.ve never seen it on another disc..

5 out of 5 stars Excellent....what a deal!.......2005-01-05

1) Hard to find masterpieces by an underrated Modernist genius from Zacatecas.

2) Excellent interpretations by a world class guitarrist.

3) Flawless recording quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-12-03

Excellent recording. This guy plays these pieces like they were utterly simple, but all the romance comes through. One of the best recordings as well for guitar: no scratches, faulters or extraneous noise and doesn't sound like it was recorded in a room too large or too small. He has total command of the guitar. I'd buy anything played by him.

4 out of 5 stars Sensitive playing.......2001-05-07

Holzman's interpretations of these short Ponce works for guitar are quite moving. This music is modern/twentieth-century, and so doesn't follow some of the harmonic and melodic conventions of older "classical music" (from prior eras, classical, baroque, romantic). But Holzman plays these pieces with a sensitivity that brings out the emotions in the music. Often, these emotions are sad and introspective, but this doesn't necessarily mean it's depressing. The tempo of most pieces are quick, and Holzman's tone color suit the pieces. He also plays with unwritten rubato and other breaks in tempo (though not as dramatic as Glenn Gould). For guitarists, this CD may also be an introduction to Ponce's guitar repertoire. For others, enjoy it for Holzman's emotionally complex performance.

I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because some might not like this "modern" stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most essential hot jazz from New Orleans..........2000-10-13

Here on this exellent CD are all of Oscar "Papa" Celestin's Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra recordings from the 20's. Celistin's legendary big band was the hottest group(only second to Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives & Sevens) to record in New Orleans in the 30's. Celistin's Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra was probably the 1st jazz band to record in New Orleans, and his band was HOT. Also included are all of the recordings done by the absolutly hot Sam Morgan's Jazz Band, which is just as hot and essential as Celestin's. This is essential, historical, and joyful New Orleans/Dixieland Jazz, and some of the earlist and greatest music recorede in New Orleans. These bands are legendary. This is essential for all, especially Dixieland and New Orleans collectors. A MUST BUY!!!

5 out of 5 stars HOT 1920'S WHITE DANCE BAND..........2000-09-21

Though not as hot as say McKinney's Cotton Pickers or King Oliver's Dixie Syncopators, The California Ramblers might be the hottest white dance band of the 20's. Adrian Rollini is definately a highlight here on his bass sax, as well as The Dorsey Brothers, however, Rollini is the highlight. Spirited jazz solos and hot dance rhythms are consistant and the jazz content is high. This CD is by far the difinitive California Ramblers CD, which has a difinitive version of "Sweet Georgia Brown." Essential 20's jazz, despite a few awful vocal refrains. Fun & highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Rollini surprise.......1999-10-04

This is a great cd of an excellent vintage 1920's jazz band. All of the musicians are great here. The ones on the usually melody instruments such as clarinet, alto sax, trumpet and trombone are indeed excellent. But again, just like the cd Bouncin' in Rhythm, it is Adrian Rollini's presence that gives the cd its mark. Adrian Rollini played a beat instrument the bass sax,but how he does the beat is just great. But Adrian adds the dessert to the cd when he plays solos on his awkward horn. This man was a natural bass sax player. While later songs on this cd had Spencer Clark, a real good bass sax player or a tuba player, it was just not the same as Adrian being there. If you had to listen to one song on this cd I feel you should hear Pardon the Glove and listen for the Rollini bass sax beat and also listen to his solo. He is an inspiraton to hear, and this group was an excellent jazz band of that era. Buy the cd and remember the solos, but also remember the beat of Adrian Rollini-what a happy musicit will make you swing-a 5 star all the way friends.

3 out of 5 stars Paul whiteman orchestra.......2005-10-14

Although the music was well done, it appeared to me to be like concert hall music with a large orchestra. I expectd the usual fast jazz. Mr. Whiteman was successful, but number (musicians) of people on the band stand doesn't move me. I don't think I will buy any of the "King of Jazz"'s additional releases. Many of the small groups I find to my liking.

5 out of 5 stars Early Whiteman at his best!.......2005-01-06

Paul Whiteman's once-stellar reputation has been sullied in recent years and his many contributions to popular music have been largely ignored or deprecated. This is truly unfortunate. Whiteman's legacy includes the melding of classical musical forms with the jazz idiom; making jazz a respectible musical form; promoting dance music of the highest quality; presenting experimental works by little-known American composers; and elevating virtuoso "jazz" musicians to star-status. Whiteman - and his arranger, Ferde Grofe - united a number of disparate musical trends in existence before 1920 and combined them into a form that can be characterized as the age of large dance orchestras of the 1920s-1940s. The Whiteman paradigm of playing music in strict tempos with vocal refrains as being merely incidental began to be replaced with swing after 1936, and was totally obsoleted by the time bop became popular after the second world war. However, if you attend a Broadway musical today, the musical style you hear will have strong connections to the earlier efforts of both Whiteman and Grofe.

Whiteman has become a pariah to modern music critics because of his claim to the title of "The King of Jazz". While his orchestra contained many of the finest jazz musicians of the day - Beiderbecke, Trumbauer, the Teagardens, the Dorseys, Venuti, Lange, Brown, etc. - the jazz output, per se, was very limited. Critics felt that Whiteman's claim to the crown in light of the jazz contributions of Oliver, Armstrong, Morton, Henderson, Redman, Ellington, Moten, Goldkette, etc. bordered upon the worst kind of arrogance. For this faux pas he was to never be forgiven nor accorded respect for his many tangible contributions. I feel that if he had moderated critical hostility by referring to himself as "King of Symphonic Jazz", Whiteman would today hold a much deserved, dignified place in the pantheon of jazz greats.

This CD covers the largely neglected, faux-jazz period in Whiteman's output running from the beginning of electrical recordings in 1925 and continuing into 1928 when his orchestra became greatly enlarged. Most of the tracks on this CD are played by Grofe's "perfect orchestra", which has four instrumental voices in each section, allowing the sections to end a phrase with a sixth chord [Whiteman and McBride. (1926). Jazz.] The instrumentation is largely two trumpets, two trombones, four reeds doubling on many instruments, two violins (enlarged to four in 1927), piano, banjo, tuba, and drums. This orchestral combination has played some of the finest dance music ever recorded. The songs are generally of a lighter vein and contain some breath-taking performances by Ross Gorman and Charles Strickfadden on reeds, electrifying trombone solos by Wilbur Hall (who played on segments of the Gong Show on television in the early 1980s), and the fantastic trumpet-work of Henry Busse. This is the type of music that made Whiteman a household name in the 1920s, and is some of the best representative, "symphonic jazz" music of that period.

This NAXOS CD has presented these early electrical recordings in a very enjoyable package. If you like music from the 1920s but have only heard the Whiteman recordings from the Beiderbecke period of 1927-1929, you will find here an entirely different dimension of well-written, well-scored, happy, and bouncy music played by the absolutely highest-caliber musicians that ever graced a dance orchestra.

            5 out of 5 stars Electric shocks........2003-09-13

Great excitement must have greeted the advent of the electric recording process in 1925. Heard on this Naxos issue are surely some of the very earliest examples, recorded in Camden, New Jersey, 6th May 1925. The arrangements and the instrumentation probably are not much different from those used for earlier recording sessions that year, using the acoustic process, but Whiteman's musicians and the record-buying public must have been excited by the results.

Original pressings must have received a bashing, one way or another, and it seems miraculous that we are able today to hear the recordings in pristine sound. Whiteman's significance, it has been claimed, was his capacity for attracting talented musicians rather than evincing any special musical qualities of his own. He nevertheless put his stamp on all recordings he supervised. There is always a kind of relentless bounce in the rhythm. Indeed, the Whiteman rhythm seems to convert such dissimilar items as Padilla's "Valencia" and Rodgers' "Manhattan", heard of this CD, into identical twins.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetly lowdown Whiteman classics.......2002-11-29

Fabulous Paul Whiteman collection that focuses mostly on the period between "Rhapsody in Blue" and the arrival of Bix Beiderbecke. The hotter numbers in the track list (Charleston, Me Too, the title number, etc.) effectively fly in the face of some of the long-standing myths about Whiteman's orchestra-for example, that the band never played jazz prior to the arrival of Bill Challis and other displaced Jean Goldkette bandmembers, or that it never played jazz at all, or that chief Whiteman arranger Ferde Grofe's work was the antithesis of, say, Don Redman's for Fletcher Henderson. Nonsense-and the proof is here. Most of these tracks are Grofe concoctions, and, even when they stray from jazz style, they are nothing less than stunning examples of Jazz Age orchestration. Phenomenal playing, fun novelty numbers (like "Ogo Pogo," featuring Billy Murray, which has to be heard to be believed), and very good sound restoration by NAXOS. The liner essay is awful, but one can't have everything. It's the music that matters.
