For haters eager to see Kanye hit a sophomore slump--no such luck. Late Registration can't replicate the novelty of last year's College Dropout, but otherwise, this is an impressively more mature and labored-over album. Lyrically, Kanye's only improved a notch but musically, the album sounds incredible, especially with co-producer Jon Brion helping polish the songs to perfection. Tracks like "Heard 'Em Say" (featuring Maroon 5's Adam Levine) and "Hey Mama," are richly textured in their soulfulness while the flint-edge of "Crack Music" and "Gone" (feat. Cam'ron) will appeal to the street-oriented. There's a few duds on here--the sickly-sweet, syrupy "Bring Me Down" (feat. Brandy) being one of the worst offenders--but when the album's good, it's very, very good. In short, Kanye's detractors may not be swayed in their resistance to his charms but not only will his past supporters be rewarded but Late Registration has enough appeal to earn new crowds of fans. --Oliver Wang

Wit the exception of songs like gold digger , drive slow , and diamonds which were the singles of this album ? The rest is the album is tight. Good production and k. west's lirycs are truly sharp as an mc i must add. Idk why west chose to work with Paul wall ? he's super wack.Anyways i highly recommended its original as hell. Late registration is worth a purchase .

Kanye West proves one thing if nothing else: Not all rap is created equal. Like many other achievements in popular music, West takes elements from soul, jazz, and pop, to mix with his bright, witty lyrics. Fun but also formidable, Kanye takes on the trappings of American material culture and understandably finds much to mock. With different meters and measures, Kanye West makes all other efforts seem stale. Giving snatches of wit, his rapping inspires some real laughs. While inserting the soundtrack of a seductive siren voice singing "Diamonds Are Forever," he tears off about the divide between American dreams and their (too often) unattainment. On 'Late Registration' the joker's wild--and often wise.

I have seen the future of music, and his name is Kanye West, the singular genius who embodies the new generation of music. More of an innovator than a synthesizer of past forms, West's name will stand with other giants of musical innovation, including Monteverdi, Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Wagner, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Armstrong, Parker, Coltrane, and Davis. Musically, this album rivals the best work by any 20th century artist, and is sure to set the course for many generations of composers, not only in the hip-hop sphere, but also so-called "art music," whose latest incarnation is mired in serialism verging on a complete divorcement from musical tradition. The album sounds amazing, with such tracks as "Heard 'Em Say" (featuring Maroon 5's Adam Levine) and "Hey Mama." "Crack Music" and "Gone" (featuring Cam'ron) rivals the most delicious in straight-up gangsta'. It's good to hear Brandy back on the wax with the duet "Bring Me Down." Peace, and a big shout out to my Detroit boyz'!!! Yaaah, son!

Kanye's first album going triple platinum might have went to his head. Even though he was the rookie of the year with College Dropout, this album is pale in comparison. The production for the album is just as tight as it was on his first album but some of the guest appearances were pretty tame. Standout tracks: HEARD EM SAY, TOUCH THE SKY, DRIVE SLOW, CRACK MUSIC(he could have let Game spit a verse on here), ROSES, BRING ME DOWN(dope track but the corny verse that goes /hater n****s marry hater b***hes and have hater kids/ might be a cause of concern), ADDICTION, DIAMONDS FROM SIERRA LEONE REMIX(The remix is superior to the original, not the other way around but I understand your confusion when you let a Cracked Magazine clone like XXL tell you what's what) and HEY MAMA(nice tribute to his mother). Filler: Gold Digger(the worst track Kanye ever made!), We major(nice beat but YAWN!), Gone, Celebration(its a funeral b***hes), Diamons From Sierra Leone and the bonus track Late sucks! Also the Broke Phi Broke skit is just plain cheesy. Bottom Line: Late Registration is a highlight album of 2005 but is pale in comparison to College Dropout. Its not a garbage album by a longshot but it lacks the oomph that the first album had.

This debut from the most sought-after hip-hop producer not named Pharrell delivers the unthinkable: West magically sledgehammers home his opinions on taboo topics over beats that are equally daring. The envelope-ripping beats shouldn't come as a surprise given that he's supplied the soundscapes to monster singles by everyone from Alicia Keys ("You Don't Know My Name") to Talib Kweli ("Get By"). What is freakish is that in West's world, rhymes about strippers, God, college life, and guns can co-exist tidily and not undermine each other. On "Breathe In Breathe Out" he raps "I gotta apologize to Mos and Kweli/is it cool to rap about gold if I told the world I copped it from Ghana and Mali"--tongue firmly planted in cheek. On the catchy "Through the Wire," fuelled by a Chaka Khan hook, he spits some impeccable rhymes despite his jaw being wired shut after a near-fatal car accident. Maybe it was this brush with mortality that kicked his lyrics into high gear on "All Falls Down." The skits on here are just as potent, one poking fun at the overeducated underclass that makes a small fraction of the loot he does. This album has everything done properly, even the skits made me laugh. Kanye shows a lot of talent on this album, and his lyrics are quite solid. Not to mention, he has quite a number of featured artists on this album, however, the spotlight usually stays on Kanye. Combined with some major talent such as Mos Def, Jay-Z and Talib Kweli.

Some may not like the last song, "Last Call", since he raps in the beginning, for about 4 minutes, and the other 8 minutes is Kanye telling his own story, from his past to present. Truly a great debut!

I'm going to say this to all these people who interject pointless reviews about Kanye that has nothing to do with the album: If you hate his music so much, why did you buy his album? People are making comments about Kanye like this some kind of message board of such.

As for "The College Dropout", I found it to be a very solid debut. Perhaps overrated, in my opinion. What stands out to me is his production. Some of his production is nice. So what if he uses samples in his production. If that is his style, let him run with it. "Get 'Em High" has one of the best beats on here made by Kanye. While I believe some of his production is lackluster, like on "All Falls Down" and "The New Workout Plan".

As for his lyrical skills. Some people do the "either love him or hate him" thing for Kanye. People love Kanye because he rhymes about alternative subjects, such as the obvious "Jesus Walks". As I said on my Lupe Fiasco review, just because you rhyme about something different than everybody else doesn't necessarly make you better than anyone else. I believe Kanye is an excellent rapper, but his mic skills are more limited than everyone in the world thinks. Also I seem to notice that people hate Kanye because they claim that his rhymes are arrogant. I do believe that is true, but everyone has a reason to be arrogant. Kanye just lets a lot of heat off his chest in a direct way, possibly because he was affected by past events in his life. Hey, I'm not mad at his arrogance, because a lot of what he says I can relate to.

As for bad songs, I can name a lot. As mentioned before "Jesus Walks", I found that the be one of the most overrated songs that I heard 2004. It was a good song, but everyone played it into the ground. A few more songs that I had no feel to was "The New Workout Plan", "Breathe In Breathe Out", "All Falls Out" (another song I thought was overrated, thanks to BET). The good songs was "We Don't Care" which I thought was good and entertaining. "Spaceship" with GLC and Consequence, which I could relate to as well. One I really enjoyed was "Family Business" which was very laid back and excellent song put together.

The College Dropout to me was solid. People love it or hate it, but I find this in the middle. Kanye has skill to carry an entire album, lyrically and production wise, as it was shown on his debut. I personally like "The Late Registration" better than this, and is looking foward to his third album "The Freshman Adjustment". This CD had an effect on me in so many ways. I recommend that you don't play this CD right after you graduate high school (like I did, lol). Some of the skits "School Sprit Skit" are somewhat kind of wasteful (hey I've been in College going on three years). So I don't think anyone should take them seriously. Another dissapointmet was that a week befor the CD came out, The Music Choice Channel played a song with him and ODB called "Keep The Receipt" that didn't make the final cut (I liked that song). I have no bias against Kanye, and I enjoyed this album.

In response to one reviewer: When you mention the track that follows "Jesus Walks" as "a track about getting falacio" I'm guessing you are talking about "The New Workout Plan" which does not follow "Jesus Walks".

This album is full of contradictions. He talks about hoes, money and head on the one hand and Jesus and social issues on the other. The album is however very entertaining and I can play it through for the most part, without too much skipping except when I got to tracks 13 to 17 - too many skits.

My favorite tracks are:
4. All Falls Down - hot single; good message about people who are lost in school etc. Syleena Johnson is featured and she sounds great.
6. Spaceship - I love this song - it's about working someplace you hate. Consequence & GLC are featured and their rhymes are tight.
7. Jesus Walks - hot single with some good messages.
8. Never let me down - love it - the beat is sick - the singing is beautiful - JayZ's flow is outstanding on this.
9. Get em high featuring Common and Talib Kweli - good beat. Common and Talib Kweli's raps are both on point.
18. Two Words - nice beat; good raps by Mos Def and Freeway. The Harlem Boys Choir sounds good.
19. Through the Wire - hot single.
21. Last Call - long outro but it has a nice beat and tells the story of how he became a rapper.

Kanye has an annoying personality and so it shows on the worse tracks. The worse tracks are:
3. Graduation Day - silly, pointless interlude;
11. The new workout plan - this is a joke - it's about giving head as a workout;
13. Breathe in breathe out - another head giving song;
14. School Spirit Skit 1 - annoying interlude;
15. School Spirit - song about nothing;
16. School Spirit Skit 2 - annoying anti-education interlude;
17. Lil Jimmy Skit - another annoying anti-education interlude;

His anti-degree interludes are supremely annoying. Doesn't he realize that not everyone can end up in the arts, whether it's being a professional dancer, singer, producer, actor or artist? If you have no artistic ability, then a college education in a marketable major is a good choice. Besides most people who aspire to be rappers/singers/producers never get discovered and never become famous. Hopefully kids listening to this CD won't take his rants seriously.

Kanye West is a good lyricist but to say that he is bringing hip hop back(especially when cornball groups like D4L and Dem Franchize Noize can make crappy albums and go gold)is a bit much. Kanye's production especially on this album is solid and innovative and not simplistic sounding like the beats you get from these overrated producers(think Nitti and Swizz Beatz). Standout tracks: ALL FALLS DOWN, SPACESHIP, JESUS WALKS, NEVER LET ME DOWN, GET EM HIGH(Kanye and Talib's verses were hot but Common steals the show), THE NEW WORKOUT PLAN, SCHOOL SPIRIT, TWO WORDS, THROUGH THE WIRE(crazy first single) and FAMILY BUSINESS. Filler: Breathe in Breathe out(corny snoozer alert), Slow Jamz(I never liked this track but to put and extended version is going overboard) and all those skits(while truthful) were not funny. Bottom line: Kanye West shows and proves on this highlight album of 2004. His flow is impressive, the production is great and the guest appearances shine along with him. A classic debut.

Kanye blasted out on his own in 2004 with College Dropout. He previously had built his resume as a producer on hits like Jay-Z's classic The Blueprint. The soul samples continue with this refreshing debut.

The hip-hop entry in Rhino's Millennium Party compilation series doesn't so much capture the sound of the year 2000 as it does that of 1989. In the wake of "Walk This Way," Top 40 radio realized that its listeners would accept the Fresh Prince's tales of teen mock-woe, Tone Loc's Coasters-derived rockers, and Young MC's, er, tales of teen mock-woe. Up to and including Snoop's "What's My Name?" (the CD's newest cut, from '93), this excellent PG-rated set makes nearly flawless choices. Biggest exception: "Tennessee" by Arrested Development, whose leader Speech's nonstop self-righteous mumbling will drive everyone into the next room. --Rickey Wright

This CD gets the party started and the party don't stop til you turn it off! It's (almost) more fun than Erich's mom putting on chaps after a few shots of tequila.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the glory days of rap and hip-hop!.......2006-02-25

I had been notorious at high school for scathing hostility towards current-day hip hop and rap of the late 1990s to the present but I never denied how much I loved the earlier years of this formerly wonderful and fun genre of music.

These 18 tracks while varying in enjoyable for me, showcase what I think were and remain staples of the glory years of hip-hop and that once, this now disgusting genre was at one time a genre of fun, dance and even witty.

The best songs for me are "Hip Hop Hooray", a popular basketball theme during games I played at a private school I attended in childhood, "Good Vibrations" arguably my favorite hip-hop classic of all time despite it's cheese factor rearing it's head, "Around The Way Girl" by LL Cool, and even "U Can't Touch This", all of which were anthems for my early childhood during their charting days. I enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

Even parents who despise or are concerned by questionable content in current day rap music would make a good move by buying this collection.

Much like the "Millennium Dance Party" disc, but not dance, this is simply full of great hip-hop, from what I would call the fun days of rap. I think anybody could come up with another disc of tracks that belong here, but still good stuff. I honestly dig it all, but favorites would be from Grandmaster Flash, Tone Loc, Young MC, and PM Dawn. Plus the biggest hits from Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre for some g-funk. I also went through a decent House Of Pain phase, so glad that's here. In short, if you're anywhere near 30 and need just one disc of old rap, this collection is the bomb!

If you're a fan of these tunes from the 90s, you'll love this disc. Yes, they omit a couple (Wild Thing by Tone Loc, Gonna Make Ya Sweat by CNC Music Factory), and they have a couple that are not "real" hits in my mind -- Tennessee by Arrested Development? Why did they put this song on here? Of course, though, that's personal preference. Overall, great mix.

I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.

If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.

Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.

For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.

The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.

This is the most amazing live hip-hop CD I have ever heard. The fact that it took a beat junkie like Ye to come up with something like this is NOT suprising in the least. It sounds a lot like the Live Portishead album of a while back. The string section does not overpower Ye and the beats, but take the songs to such a different place, it's mind blowing. The subtelty of it is amazing. I'm sure anyone checking this out is familiar with all of these songs, and this might not be up some peoples ally. But damn, It was recorded at Abby Road, you can almost hear John Lennon smile in the strings. This man will single handedly change hip-hop forever. Much like the Beatles changed pop music. Brilliant.

Once again Kanye returns with another gem...While not an official LP this Live Album recorded in the Abbey Road Studios home of the Beatles, takes Kanye and hip hop music to a whole new dimension...

From Track 1-13 all of Kanye's hits packed into one cd played exceptionally well backed by a 17 piece orchestra (hence "Late Orchestration") and special appearances from G.O.O.D Music including John Legend, GLC, Consequence, and also Lupe Fiasco on the Hit "Touch The Sky"...

Even if your not a hip hop or R&B fan you can still appreciate the music and the production layed out by Kanye...Still not sure why he didn't release this in the U.S. but for you true Ye fans this CD is also available on DVD packed with alot of extra footage of his 5 music videos off Late Registration, interviews, and never before seen footage...

Long before Snoop Dogg, Eminem, or Xzibit came into the picture, Dr. Dre had already found the perfect MC in the D.O.C., a Texas transplant to Los Angeles. Before he tragically lost his vocal chords in an auto accident, the D.O.C. was easily one of the fiercest lyricists that the West Coast had ever witnessed--a combination of Ice Cube's scowling aggressiveness but balanced with a sophistication that would have rivaled KRS-One at his best. With a ragga-tinged flow, he could drop lyrical bombs with fury on "It's Funky Enough" or sublimely style for "The Formula." Dre supported the D.O.C. with a bevy of funk-laden tracks that were pre-Chronic, meaning that the feel was rough and rugged vs. wet and sticky. To say that this guy would have been one the Greatest MC'S OF ALL TIME is an understatement! As it is the D.O.C. is finding his way back into the cd players of the younger kids out there looking for REAL RAP. Exploding lyrics, a brash tone in his voice with a hint of reggae made the DOC one of the most original MC's of our time. I compare the game to him ...that's a hell of a compliment to the GAME. Don't get it twisted though, this guy was one of a kind and "No one can do it better", #8 and the title track of this rap masterpiece is so true. "It's funky enough" hit the radio and the video hit "pump it up"...he was the real deal winning a rap contest in Texas and the services of Dr.Dre ,who is a West Coast Genius, made this album untouchable. There a bit of comedy with a few sketches between tracks but this is no joke. The formula was also a hit with it's smooth mellow approach easy to appreciate his lyrics on. The cuts that i still love today also include "Lend me an ear","Whirlwind Pyramid" are straight up lyrical BOMBS! Fierce lyrics straight to the throat!...to cap this masterpiece off listen to a very raw Ice Cube( "My medly is deadly as a pin in a hand grinade") leading off the "Grand Finale" which also include the late Eazy E, MC Ren, and of course a splash of Dre is the one cut you can't overlook. I turned my 14 year old son on to the D.O.C. and he's now his favorite rapper. All the young bucks out there...pay homage to one of the greatest of all time...our one hit wonder of a MASTER PIECE! I met him in the mall in Thousand Oaks, Ca and I was able to pay respects and offer condolinces on his accident that took his voice away from us...This is a 5 star masterpiece!!!!!

Before Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Snoop were droppin classics on the left coast, D.O.C. did it first. While the production was top notch, the lyrics were a perfect compliment and left you wanting more. The CD title speaks for itself cause whether he was rapping fast, slow, smooth, or rugged he could do it all. If you don't have it, then you got to get it cause i been blessed ever since i got the tape 18 years ago.

Dallas, Texas native Tracy Curry started his rap career in a group called the Fila Fresh Crew. A chance acquaintance by a group member with Los Angeles, California's Dr. Dre' led the group into the auspices of Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. After recording a handful of 12" singles, the group soon broke up, but Curry, a.k.a. "The D.O.C." stayed with the Ruthless camp, writing lyrics for several songs on Eazy E's solo debut, "Eazy Duz It" and becoming a peripheral member of N.W.A. Though his presence was limited on "Straight Outta Compton", soon the hip-hop world would know his name in major way on the Ruthless/Atlantic release, "No One Can Do it Better."

The album is produced in its entirety by Dr. Dre, and combines street-ready breakbeats with Dre's preference for Soul and Funk samples (keen listeners will note that on several songs there is not an outright sample but rather a live studio reinterpretation of key riffs).

The debut single is here, "It's Funky Enough", as is "The D.O.C. and the Doctor", "Mind Blowin'" and the guitar-rocker "Beautiful but Deadly". The best song is the mellow "The Formula", which samples Marvin Gaye's "Makes Me Wanna Holler" (even better is the extended remix). Also of note is "The Grand Finale", a posse cut featuring Dr. Dre', Eazy-E, MC Ren and Ice Cube (and DJ Yella on drums), which would be the final recording of all the N.W.A. members before the death of Eazy-E in 1995. The album would sell over 1 million copies.

Lyrically, D.O.C. had a cadence that was clear and articulate that couldn't be automatically pegged by New York purists as Southern or West Coast. He also generally avoided profanity and his thematic content wasn't entrenched in gang life & violent boasts. Tragically, a car accident permanently damaged D.O.C.'s voice, so this is really his defining artistic statement.

Despite being in-print for many years now, this album truly deserves a deluxe re-release. Remixes, 12-inch/EP cuts and music videos could be included.

Dang, I remember back in the early 90's when I was just a kid when the radio used to blast "Mic Checka" by Das EFX. That single reached #1 on the Billboard back in '92. Listening to Das EFX some 15 years later, I notice the origonal style "iggity", and how everyone jocked it. But Drayz and Scoob dropped the style first, and the "iggity" type rhymes could be found all over this album.

"Mic Checka" was a dope song as the lead off song. Another song that stood out was "They Want EFX" with it's bumping beat, and head jerking rhymes. You also have more bumping tracks like "Looseys" which is about girls, and "If Only" as well. I would say the best track would be the last track "Straight Out The Sewer" as both Drayz and Skoob both kick dope verses.

As for anything bad. I personally thought the "iggity" style was a little repetative. I can't be mad though, because that was Das' style and it was completely origonal, and had everyone bitting it. Nowadays if you'll get laughed at for using that style like Das EFX did. But back in '91, rap was fun and origonal, so it's all cool.

Dead Serious is almost a classic in my opinion. With production by Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith of EPMD, you can expect a lot of great beats on here, as it sort of reminds me of Redman's Whut? Thee Album. 10 tracks deep with very little flaws, there is not much to ask for. Also this album is edited (a lot of early 90's rap never came with parantal advisory stickers), so expect a couple of edits in a few songs. They would follow up in '93 with Straight Up Sewaside. If you're a fan of origonal 90's rap, I recommend you check this out. Peace!

look here, i have heard so many different views about diggy das that it is not even funny. now yes, when you hear it now, it does sound a bit corny, but if it sounds like this, then a lil corny with butter sounds pretty doggone good to me. i remember when i first heard this in alabama, i was like AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHAT IS THIS???!!!??? then it came to where i am from, and instantaneously it was like BAM! all over the place. if you like head noddahs, then this joint will satisfy. if you like overrated garble like nelly, then get nelly and get away from me please...................GIMMIE MY DAS!!!!!

Its hard to believe that they made this so many years ago. This is so original that it is hard to believe that anyone came up with it. They have had so many trademark aspects to their music, and many artists since then have tried to duplicate it and get the same effect. But in this case, as with many others, nothing is better (or even close) to the original. Get this CD as soon as you can and you will know what I am talking about.

However, Das should be getting residual checks from everyone who bit pieces of their iggetty style, such as Snoop,Kriss Kross, Fu-schnickens,Lords of the Underground and countless others. It's hard putting a group that was so fantastic coming out gate in the one hit wonder category. Roming the sewer lines was only going to be cool for so long. But when they were hot, Das Efx was the issh. The whole album is a classic for those in the know. Check it out, it still bumps.

Personally I loved the movie. The insight given by Laurence Fishburne's character(Furious)evened the movie out so it did not end up in the ignorant hood movie category(Think Menace To Society and Baby Boy). The soundtrack is just as memorable. Standout Tracks: HOW TO SURVIVE IN SOUTH CENTRAL, GROWIN UP IN THE HOOD(Classic CMW s***), JUST A FRIENDLY GAME OF BASEBALL REMIX(creative classic by Main Source), WORK IT OUT(shout out to Monie Love), EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND, SPIRIT, JUST ASK ME TO(I'll admit I like this one), SEPTEMBRO(Quincy Jones is a genius) and BLACK ON BLACK CRIME(and so is Stanley Clarke for this masterful score). Filler: 2 Live Crew's Hangin Out is corny as hell. Bottom Line: This soundtrack should accompany the good movie that spawned it. Minus the 2 Live Crew track, the rest of the soundtrack is every bit as memorable as the movie. Good Times!

You cannot put a whitney houston cover with a Pink Floyd cover .....period... it is not right chico..."it don't mix" if you can understand my english. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico... so I know about the underground. I love wyclef and I understand what the kid is trying to do, but it does not work. Your No woman no cry cover is really chill. but don't press your luck my friend.... whish you were here just does not sound right.

I think this a very creative record . Wyclef jean take risks , so all the songs are not the at the same level . But a record that have Diallo among the tracks deserves serious listening and deep attention. Period.

Wyclef and the Refugee Camp hold a cross-genre fan base, being one of the influences of the hip hop world that can truly be said to have very high level of acceptance and support from non-hip-hop heads. Eleftic demonstraits why this is so beautifully. Wyclef comes with a strong album sporting an array of music that is as diverse as it is well crafted. Inspirations from classic rock, regae, soul, R&B, Dance and many other sources are noticable all over the album while successfully maintaing a very hip hop feel throughout the entire thing. This genre balancing act can be tricky but Wyclef does this wonderfully, and possibly even better than on his last solo album. The lyrics and rhymes range from not bad, to pretty good, and the singing is good as well. But the real star here is the music. The beats are diverse and enjoyable and will satisfy almost anyone. Songs like "wish you were here", "Run away", "911", "Doesnt matter", and "pulling me in" all sport styles that are different and have unique flavors to them and "Diallo Diallo" showcases wyclef's social conscious edge to his work.

All things considered some hip hop heads will argue that there isn't enough rap, or that it doesn't suit thier tastes. But Ecleftic can hold a rare title of being "hip hop for people who dont really like hip hop". And for me, and many other hip hop fans, elecftic will represent something different and a little innovative with great production work. Beats catchy enough to make you bob your head and enough soul to make you want to sing along, and plenty of culture - Wyclef proves once again on Ecleftic that hip hop is an artform that can be effectively used as glue to hold together many elements of several different musical genres at the same time, and bring it all together in a melody that's different pieces oddly compliment one another beautifully.

I like The Carnival and Preacher's Son better, but this is listenable. As far as musically, Wyclef's improved, but he is kinda immature on this album. "Where Fugees At?" is a good beat, but why's he askin? Supposedly it's his fault that they split up, according to Pras(though he's not a very reliable source). Clef also makes the mistake of trying to take on Canibus, his former protege(Canibus blamed Wyclef for the failure of his debut, and dissed him on "2000 B.C."). Clef is obviously no match for Canibus and if 'Bis retaliated on him, Clef would be finished. Besides those mistakes, and the horrible "Dirty South", Clef seems to have grown a little. On "Perfect Gentlemen", Clef defends strippers and tells the story of a romance between him and a stripper(likely false). The album misses that Fugees vibe that was still there on The Carnival. The less know guest appearences are boring, but the big names are funny and acceptable. Kenny Rogers, of all people, sings on "Kenny Rogers Dub Plate", where Wyclef and other rappers rhyme over a beat as Kenny sings the hook. This song is surprisingly likeable as is "It Doesn't Matter" which has another surprising guest, wrestler The Rock. On "911", Clef teams up with Mary J. Blige to showcase his actually not bad singing voice. Besides the awful Whitney Houston team up on her dub plate, Clef seems to have it down. Songs like "Hollyhood to Hollywood" and "Diallo" showcase his amazing creativity once again, the latter which is based on the case of the police shooting a man named Diallo 41 times for nothing. One of my favorite songs is "Wish You Were Here", which sounds alot like "Gone Til November", because of Clef's flow from singing to rapping. Basically, get Clef's other albums first(The Carnival, Preacher's Son, the fugees Score, and Pras' Ghetto Supastar).

This album is great. He's got two diss tracks, "Where Fugees At"(Pras, Lauryn diss) and "However You Want It"(Canibus diss). He's got emotional songs like "911", "Diallo", and "Hollywood to Hollyhood". He also has fun songs like "It Doesn't Matter", "Perfect Gentleman", and "Something About Mary". Overall this album is mostly good. I think he could've done better, but overall this is a must-by.
