Visceral... a Memphis tour-de-force.
Product Description
The incendiary soul / jazz / funk of The Bo-Keys' "The Royal Sessions" is a hard-hitting and authentic modern take on Memphis' original soul-stew sound - a mixture of original instrumental and vocal features that fuse R&B fundamentals with elements of modern hip-hop.
An all-star section of Stax sidemen - Ronnie Williams (The Bar-Kays, David Porter) on Hammond B-3 organ, drummer Willie Hall (The Bar-Kays, the Blues Brothers), and Charles "Skip" Pitts (Isaac Hayes, Al Green) on wah-wah guitar - joins garage rock prodigy Scott Bomar (Impala) on bass to lay down deep funk grooves for a mighty horn section consisting of Memphis' finest young players.
Recorded and mixed at Willie Mitchell's (Hi Records, Al Green) Royal Studios, The Royal Sessions is steeped in the Memphis tradition. But it's much more than an homage: it's the sound of Memphis now - familiar, fresh, and unquestionably fantastic.

Good music.....bad recordings.......2005-02-17
This is the only recording of Sessions' first and third symphonies. The recording of Symphony No. 1 is not very good, which is a shame considering that it is one of Sessions most interesting pieces. The group sounds sloppy at times, and the sound (especially noticeable in the brass) comes off very harsh and edgy. The editing is pretty shoddy as well. Even somebody who didn't know anything about music would be able to hear several places in the third movement where sections have been cut and pasted together. The most unforgivable editing mistake is in the second movement. It is a largo movement that starts off with a typical Sessions long phrase that gets passed around between violin and viola. Unfortunatly....the editor decided it would be ok to use a take that didn't have the last note of the melodic line in the viola! The whole phrase has been building for 26 measures to that one note....to not have it there is a real letdown.
Symphony No. 2 is my favorite Sessions symphony and the recording on this CD is alright. The orchestra plays well, but the sound is not very good because of the age of the recording. This hurts because harmonic texture is something very important to Sessions' music, and you lose a lot of that on this old New York Phil recording. A key example of this is the beginning of the finale where Sessions writes a facinating multilayered texture that sounds like a giant blob of sound. A better one to have would be Blomstedt and San Francisco....if you can find it.
The recording of Symphony No. 3 is the best one on the disc. It's not his best symphony but I like it. This piece shows Sessions in his mature style. It was written after Sessions began to incorporate 12-tone technique into his compositions, but is not quite as "out there" as some of his later works. It's very similar to his second symphony with a moderatly paced opener, playful second movement, slow movement, and complex multilayered finale. The third symphony is much darker in character....more in line with his later style.
If you are already a Sessions fan, you'll love this CD; however, if you are just getting to know this composer, a better place to start would be the Juilliard Orchestra's recording of The Black Maskers or the Gunther Schuller's recording of the Violin Concerto.
Sessions and his Art.......1999-12-23
My first introduction to Roger Sessions' music was his First Symphony on this recording. I found it while browsing around in the library. The first movement was a mind-blower. Instantly accessible, great rhythms, and good and loud. I wondered what other wonders were on this CD. Well, my first impression was that it was akin to white noise. I love Lutoslawski and Penderecki and it seemed to be noise. However, I gave it a second shot, and a third, and so on and the OTHER wonders of his music became apparent. Get this CD, give it a chance, and it'll grow on you. I have most of his symphonies and have several other pieces and I'm going to get more soon.
1st Sym. an accesible intro to difficult music........1999-07-02
On first encounter I found the music of Roger Sessions harsh-sounding, dense, and almost, but not quite, inacessible. Something about it made me want to hear more. After hearing a lot more, lots of times, I consider him one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. I particularly recommend his First Symphony as the most listener friendly of the orchestral works with which I am familiar. Composed in the 20's, it's rythyms sometimes remind one of Stravinsky, it contains jazzy sections, and some beautiful slow sections. It may turn you off, but if you stick with it, a whole universe of wonderful sound is there to be explored.
First Recording of Sessions Symphonies.......1999-04-26
I have always loved Sessions' music and this CD has first recordings of these works. In the First, the Japan Philharmonic fit themselves well, but the sound is not so hot. (How about it, Neeme Jarvi/Detroit Symphony?) Mitropoulos' 2nd has a certain authority about it, but the sound here is tinny also. It is easier to hear the Blomstedt recording of this, which also has a wonderful performance of it on a London CD. This is well worth hearing though. The price of the CD, however is worth it for the 3rd. Buketoff was a staunch champion of unknown 20th century works. This recording came out in 1968 and on CD it still sounds very good. We do need more modern recordings of these works, but this will fill the bill in the meantime. Sessions deserves all of his works recorded in good quality digital sound.

Review: BoKey's Royal Sessions.......2007-01-04
Good CD with good musicians. If you like blues, jazz, or both -- you'll like this CD. The title track is probably the best.
Musical Comfort Food.......2005-01-15
The Bo-Keys are an all-instrumental group who specialize in funky southern soul. Guitarist Skipp Pitts and Drummer Willie Hall are both veterans of the legendary Stax records, the label which called itself "Soulsville USA." "The Royal Sessions" channels the spirit of Memphis and Muscle Shoals; each track is infused with a pulsating rhythm section and down-home horn charts.
The Bo Keys are at their best when they keep it simple; tunes like "Coming Home Baby" and "Deuce and a Quarter" feature soulful organ and horns over a fatback rhythm groove. The ballad "I Remember Stax"- which features some beautiful guitar work by Skip Pitts- is one of the disc's highpoints. While most of the tracks on "The Royal Sessions" are solid performances, there are a few weak-points. A decent performance of the Jimmy Smith workhorse "Back at the Chicken Shack" is marred by a silly vocal track featuring a Wolfman Jack sound-alike babbling about hot sauce or ribs or something. It's the kind of gimmick that might impress House of Blues patrons, but serious music fans will probably find themselves reaching for the "skip" button on their CD player. "My Country Loves Me", another tune with a spoken vocal track, sounds like an attempt at Gil Scot-Heron style political commentary that never quite coheres.
"The Royal Sessions" is the musical equivalent of comfort food; while not necessarily original or innovative, it's hot, greasy and sure to bring a smile.
HYPE.......2004-08-30
i bought this cd recently after i'd read a few favorable reviews, the memphis gunslingers involvment, etc. the cd is okay, but doesn't live up to all the hype. here's a few things: the rap/spoken vocal stuff is really really awful. the jimmy smith cover song is unlistenable. their originals are not that hot. overall, regardless of the personnel, it's not essential. if you are already hip to this genre of music, this cd is no big deal. i already used my copy for trade credit at my local cd store. if you are looking for a new band playing this type of music, try a cd by "the dipolmats of solid sound" - they are a current 60's soul/instrumental quartet who absolutely bury the bo-keys.
You need this CD.......2004-07-09
My sister sent me this CD for my recent birthday. I'm glad she did. This is a nasty, greasy mix of full-on funk, R&B, and soul ripped out by some masters in Memphis. These cats played with Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the M.G.'s, and sat in on Stax sessions. They throw down the jams live to tape and we get to listen in. If you want some music that feels like late 60s music updated for today - this is your stuff. Daddy like. Smoke up some ribs and spin this ASAP.
The NEW Kings of Memphis!.......2004-06-16
It's awful nice when you find a record label you can trust to deliver something great or at the very least interesting. Memphis' Yellow Dog Records is just that. Home to one of the best blues artists of the last couple years Mark Lemhouse as well as The Bluff City Backsliders Yellow Dog now brings us in it's on going tradition of great AND interesting Memphis' own new instumental soulfunk masters The Bo-Keys and their new release The Royal Sessions. I would say first release but they did back up the legendary Rev.Al Green on his gorgeous return to tip-top pop form I Can't Stop. There's been some talk about the Bo-Keys using words like revival, revisionism, and the dreaded retro but that plain don't get it. Yeah, Ike Hayes begat Booker T begat The Bar-Kays begat the Bo-Keys or somethingerother and yeah, it was recorded at the amazing Willie Mitchell's Royal Studio (home to Rev. Green's classic recordings) but that's just a pinch of the spice in the recipe for this new and greasier Memphis stew and supa summer evening BBQ. This is The New Sound of Memphis baby. This is a sharp-dressed and sweatin' at midnight popped crease hangin' loose broke down no need to fix it glide in yr slide dip in yr hip stroll from uptown to straight DOWNtown freshness. I know you already read the Who's WHO on this but to refresh howsabout Skip Pitts (you know his wahwah built the Theme from Shaft)on guitar bobbin' and stingin' like a summer picnic bee. Back that up with keyboard maestro Ronnie Williams (that's him on Rufus Thomas' Do The Funky Chicken) on the B3 organ then back that up with Bar-Kays drummer Willie Hall keepin' it slapped down. Don't forget former garage band bassist and Bo-Keys band leader Scott Bomer drivin' the bottom and trumpeter Marc Franklin and sax man Jim Spake shinin' like new chrome dubs and this Caprice classic is swangin' with funky junque in the trunk to spare. Fans of the old skool Stax/Volt/Atlantic/Motown sound and fans of new soul kool bands like Mofro get yr wallets out now. The Bo-Keys are the Feel Funky hit of the summers to come!

A diamond in the not-so-rough.......2007-05-15
Fats Navarro was one of those musicians who exploded onto the jazz scene, set it on fire while he was here, and then sadly died way too young. This album is taken from radio broadcasts in the Fall of 1948 and, as such, the sound quality is not what many people are used to. That said, the Fresh Sounds folks did a nice job remastering these tracks, and I consider the sound quality to be very good for the era and source. Now, what's really important here is we're talking about Fats Navarro with Tadd Dameron (one of the best bebop composer/arrangers) and Kenny Clarke live at the Royal Roost, with a good supporting cast. Fats rips off huge, articulate runs at breath-taking speed and makes it sound so easy. His playing is as good as anything I have in my Fats collection. Absolutely essential for any Fats Navarro fan or any early bebop fan, and highly recommended.

Product Description
For five days in October 1929, musicians from across Virginia played their songs for engineers of the Okeh Record Company. The Richmond recording session was a microcosm of Virginia and American music, capturing the music of old-time bands, African American quartets, harmonica players, jazz acts and even a Hawaiian orchestra.
This two-CD set brings together for the first time all of the released 1929 recordings in a 33-song compilation. The 48-page booklet that accompanies the set includes extensive notes by veteran music researchers and provides new biographies of previously undocumented artist such as The Tubize Hawaiian Orchestra and Otis and Tom Mote. More than 20 images, several previously unpublished, illustrate the text. Also includes lyric transcriptions. From the old-time music of Wade Wards Buck Mountain Band to the masterful harmonies of The Monarch Jazz Quartet of Norfolk, Virginia Roots is a must-buy for anyone interested in early American music and culture. Audio Restoration and Mastering of the project was done by Airshow Mastering , who received a Grammy for their work on the acclaimed Anthology of American Folk Music".

Customer Reviews:
Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25
If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.
Guitar History.......2004-02-15
Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !
Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06
If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.
Most excellent.......2001-08-18
This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.
Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09
Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
