Customer Reviews:
Incredible recordings of a great artist with a great trio.......2006-12-29
I play the piano myself and I probably own almost every Bill Evans CD that is avaialable. The two Paris concerts are in my opinion his two best albums. In these concerts, Bill Evans captures some of the old spirit of the early Scott LaFarro recordings. However, I think these actually exceed them in in terms of creative improvisation, certainly sound quality and depth. This recording represents a very mature Evans at the height of his ability.
A Different Bill Evans.......2006-03-06
Now, as much hullabaloo thats been made about his last trio, I figured it was worth my money to get the edition one and edition two of the Paris concerts.
What I found upon listening to them is that I wondered to myself if this was even Bill playing. I am a huge Bill Evans fan, I have over 15 of his albums, but they're mostly pre 1974 stuff. The thing I love most about his approach to the jazz piano is the understated beauty that he injects into his songs. I don't find much of that in these last concerts.
It seems as though Bill is making sure that all of the ideas about any of the melodies or harmonies gets put out there for all to listen because he might of felt the coming spectre of death on his shoulder and he wanted to make sure he got all the ideas out of his system.
I think that there is some overplaying on these albums. There is alot more trilling than I ever heard come out of Bill, and at times it seems like he is lost in musical thought trying to make sure he covers all of his bases on any thoughts which he would of liked to cover.
There are moments of musical wonder on these works, but I don't sense the intimacy in this group as much as with the Motian, LaFaro, Trio. That trio remains my favorite. At times I felt Marc Johnson to be a bit heavy handed in his treatment of the accompanyment.
Of course, I could be the crazy one, and the previous reviewers could be right... In my opinion, Bill Evans should be remembered more for moments like, "Isnt it Romantic," track one off of At Shelly's Manne-Hole, than the playing off of these two albums...
last time I saw Bill.......2005-08-10
I was here in Paris at the "Espace CARDIN " & what a big big concert ! ! The trio was better than ever ! yes , better than the very first one ! I was a long fan of Bill's music ,the better & the rest ,this evening on the Champs Elysées is in my "hall of fame souvenir " . On a desert island ,this record is in my package
Perfection plus !.......2005-03-24
It's difficult to imagine what's beyond perfection. Just when we thought Bill Evans achieved his maximum on the 70's trio with Eddie Gomez, it's incredible to discover that Bill Evans was playing Better than ever near to his premature death.
In 1979 and 1980, we can distinguish clearly a change on his style. He was about to change everything ( I wish he had lived 5 years more at least )...re-harmonizing old themes he played hundreds of times, playing with more dareness, at the full risk, almost playing wrong notes, but bringing the best ideas I have ever listened on him.
Bill was and still is the great Master of Jazz piano. Listening to Bill is a travel to memories of better times, and magical sound. And he plays here with a perfect touch and sonority. He approaches to some classical pieces also.
Definetely, you can't miss these 2 albuns.
Dihelson mendonça - jazz pianist.
Close to the ultimate trio.......2004-10-07
Supreme late Evans - Marc Johnson's spacious, suspended accompaniment drives this trio with a rare intensity. His extraordinary interplay with Zigmund with or without Evans sometimes dazzles in polyrhythms but also and always satisfies emotionally.
Evans' treatment of Francis Hime's "Minha" has to be of the tenderest piano ballads ever to be recorded.

This was the Bill Evans record..........2007-02-07
... that changed the way I approached listening to music. Of course since then the final Village Vanguard sets were released which are equally as well executed. This is Bill Evans at his pinnicle. It's just so sad that he had so little time left. He was musically on his way to the stratosphere.
The two Paris albums are a steal! You won't be disappointed!!.......2006-12-29
The Paris Concerts are two of my favorite Bill Evans albums. In my opinion, he is at the very top of his game on these recordings and I especially like the way that Marc Johnson and Bill Evans play together. It is reminiscent of the early Scott LaFaro recordings, but even better. There is a depth and sensitivity here that represents a very mature Bill Evans at the height of his ability. In short, these are both pure magic.
A Different Bill Evans.......2006-03-06
I previously posted this on edition one of the Paris concert, but I feel the same about edition two:

Nardis alone is worth the purchase.......2004-08-20
This and Volume 1 are must haves. Check out Bill's intro on Nardis - completely in time, yet unprecedented rhythmic displacement.
The whole recording is this good. IMHO, some of the best, most moving Bill ever.
great pianist.......2002-07-29
To study Bill Evans music, is to study great pianist of this century ( Sriabin, Bethoven, bach etc).
I hope Warner edition of the artistry transcript edition three will include transcript from this date..cause his playing here are in the top form & very beautifull.
This is not only Jazz,,,just a beautifull song by great pianist of this century.

Customer Reviews:
A nice Jarrett sampler.......2007-03-16
Paris Concert is nice cross section of Jarrett's bag, with a free improvisation, a blues, and a jazz standard. If I could only own one Jarrett CD, this one would be it.
we get it already.......2006-02-11
If you wish to learn something interesting re the fact that the keys of b minor and Bb major share the note D as their third, you would do far better to consult a decent recording of Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata than this navel-gazing narcissistic atrocity.
Very good Jarrett improvisation........2005-01-23
I have several recordings of Jarrett's which include: Koln, Bremen/Lausanne, Vienna, Dark Intervals, Facing You, Tokyo '84 DVD.
However I don't find myself going back to the Paris concert as often as the first three I listed. The main reason is the Paris concert has one of his longest running episodes of droning away on one chord.
In the final analysis though this is excellent music. It has some of his most superb Baroque-style improvisation of any of his recordings, which in and of itself is a great reason to purchase this album. I mean how many artists out there even ATTEMPT to improvise Bach like stuff? Its really cool.
Simply beautiful.......2004-07-24
I am more familiar with Keith Jarrett's classical releases, but of the jazz albums f his that I've heard, this is by far my favorite. I'm afraid that I might wear this disk out - I turn to it again & again.
A must-have CD.......2004-06-25
Keith Jarrett's "Paris Concert" beings in a classical vein, employing quiet spots to create a meditative mood, but it quickly turns to moodier, even dangerous, territory with quicksilver tempo changes. Think of a stream that rolls and runs, building a force that nothing can stop. Jarrett piles on layer after layer of dense, pulsing sound, until the last third of "October 17" is awash in thunderous arpeggios, with the clouds clearing in the final, gorgeously sunburst six minutes. This music doesn't put you "in the mood" - it opens up the moods that are inside you and transcends mere listening.
The more melodic "The Wind" seems like an appropriate coda for this brilliant recording, with a thoughtful, almost nostalgic coloring. I also own the "Koln Concert," which also has its incredible passages, but I'm surprised that "Paris" only has a dozen reviews thus far. It's one of Jarrett's best pieces of improvisation and it shows his mastery of feeling, technique and range of styles.
I think that Jarrett's fans may prefer not to overdo their praise; the music is like all the better things in life: best savored in the intimate way Jarrett meant to convey it.

Customer Reviews:
You MUST have this in your collection NOW........2003-01-02
This album transcends a mere designation of "live jazz." Here are three artists undeniably in their prime, playing for a crowd of hundreds with an intimacy found usually only in small, smoky clubs after three in the morning, when the lovers and the working men are drinking slowly in the inky shadows and becoming soothed and thrilled by what they hear. You won't be able to put this record down the moment you hear the musical interplay between Oscar and Co., and you'll feel the entire gamut of emotions in the first medley on the second CD (a unique combination of Bonhá/Jobim and David Gates compositions). This album soothes; comforts; inspires thoughts of past, present, and future; and "washes from the soul the dust of everyday life"; there's nothing better. You'll be there.
O.P. rulez!.......2001-05-16
Groovy, babe, how, how, how can I disagree? This is one of the finest live jazz concerts ever recorded! All the compositions are brilliantly performed; some tracks feature Joe Pass-solo, others a Pass/Pedersen duo. This recording is very special to me as it was the first performance of the immortal MANHA DE CARNAVAL by L.Bonfa that I've ever heard. If you have some respect to the genius of Oscar Peterson and enjoy live performances you should get this CD ASAP.
The Great Concert.......2000-06-13
One of the best Oscar's concert albums. It contains beautiful improvisations by the staff. Pass and Pederson express themselves not less than Peterson in all tunes. There are 2 tracks they play without Peterson. The very great tune is Soft Winds - you may listen to it very often and you are never tired of it. The must album for every jazz fan.
