3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-26

There are really only two tunes on this album that are both hard to find a desirable, and I bought it for the rarer of the two- Jim Pepper's great "Witchi Tai To" from the long out-of-print album, "Pepper's Pow Wow."

Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed to discover that the version presented here is a very short 2 minute and 55 second version, without the introductory chant. Luckily the version of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" presented here was also one I wanted for my collection, but that's a lot to pay for one song.

As for the other sings on the disk- a few are winner, most are forgettable, and one- "Papa Joe's"- was incredibly annoying when I originally heard it on the radio, and time has not changed my opinion!

4 out of 5 stars The Search Is Over.......2007-01-10

This cd contains a lot of tracks that I had been searching for in second hand shops but was told I would never find them by the less than helpful sales staff. The songs were all on this one cd.

4 out of 5 stars Glad to find.......2006-11-10

For a month, XM radio counted down every charting song from the 40's to the present. Quite ambitious, and an incredible listen. I here this song I love, but didn't get the name. A week later I purchase this CD and "Witchi Tai To" is on the CD. Great luck for me. "My Boy Lollipop," "Black is Black," "Tobacco Road" - all great songs. Okay, Lollipop isn't a great song, but it's hilariously fun.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Records Production of Old R&R Tunes.......2006-02-01

This disc provided me with some long sought after tunes from my youth. Typically the disc contains songs I tolerated, a few I never heard of, However, the producers sought to include songs which mean something to many.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good CD! .......2006-01-15

War peppers their music with Latin rhythms and instrumentations, mixing in elements of funk with oldies rock & roll to create a nonstop summer-block-party sound. Hits like "The Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?" are characterized by the band's lower-register vocals and beg for a singalong. "Spill the Wine, " a hit during Eric Burden's tenure with War, lacks the freer, good-time feel of the later material, but "Low Rider, " a bottom-heavy salsa driven by a raunchy harmonica, remains one of the band's most popular songs. The Best of War ... and More goes beyond retro appeal, displaying a timeless quality. --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Once upon a time..........2006-09-03

During the early seventies, WAR irrupted with vigorous freshness in the musical sand, to fill a demanded space, a required balance between the jazz, the Latin favor best known as fusion. You may argue the true pioneers in this field were Carl Tjader an Tito Puente in the sixties and fifties respectively and eve before with Poncho Sanchez in the late forties.

But even so, the most relevant aspect to remark is this music contained in its inner structure the seminal roots of the reggae and this public was immediately engaged with this rhythmical melodies conquering of this way the applause of a neglected audience. If not so, the names of Jimmy Cliff, Bobby Bloom and his Montego
Bay, Shango, Mungo Jerry and the legend of Bob Marley would have been ignored or underrated. In this sense Spill the wine (watch the flute solo as musical curtain and essential support) may be considered the jewel of the crown and likewise the funny theme Cisco Kid

So this album constitutes y itself a decisive breakthrough as well as a vigorous ipulse to the new tendencies that would become inspiration' s source to many ensembles and great audiences all around the world.

4 out of 5 stars excellent cd.......2006-02-26

I found this cd to cover the songs of War that I wanted. It is worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars I Declare "WAR" On This Disc!!.......2006-02-07

Hey Rhino, if you're gonna do War, DO WAR!(The un-edited version of "City/Country/City," "Deliver The Word," "The World Is A Ghetto," "Southern Part Of Texas")

This band built it's rep on long, loose free jams, so any War "Hits" compilation should mirror that.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of War and More.......2005-09-06

Love that Latin group from Long Beach! All Day Music is my favorite song on this wonderful CD. That cut is so relaxing. Low Rider and Summer were big hits from my high school senior year. I like having this CD in my library for a reminder of my happy high school years. Hey, Spill the Wine, which is cut 9, has to be one of the most unusual songs in pop music history. That song, of course, was done when Eric was with the group. Two totally different kinds of songs are Spill and All Day Music, a good example of War's diversity. I still cannot believe I got this at such a low price (-:

4 out of 5 stars What I want to know is this..........2005-07-21

How can you have a compilation of WAR and NOT have "The World Is A Ghetto" and "Don't Let No One Get You Down" on it? This isn't a bad com, pilation, but alof the songs are short versions of the originals and is quite lacking all the way around. Get the "WAR The Very Best Of War. You'll find ALL of the biggest hits and more.

I'm sorry to vent on the Stylistics, certainly others are guilty of this, but $33 to get all the Stylistics hits is WAY too expensive. Sorry, love the Stylistics, and the Spinners too (whose double CD anthology is around $30 too). Why is something like Lionel Richie and the Commodores 2CD Gold $13.99? Oh well... I'll wait.

5 out of 5 stars was hoping for..................2005-11-25

A little disapointed that songs from a good album back then.Lets put it all together had more than one song too pick from too be one this compilation. And also the (heavy)album had some too.But anything is better than nothing since there is virtually nothing on later reissues from this label on this artist.Which I still too this day don't understand.Their is people out here all over the world who would buy once they know they are available. The albums I mentioned and(you are beautiful).Three that would bring good money too this label. But it does have some not on previous hits albums. So pick it up you will be happy you did.And its good background music when company is over,or at work or in the car.Everyone of all ages and cultures know this music. Its music that will be around forever.Generation too generation.A Legacy, something unfortunately todays music cannot say.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Anyone who's purchased one of Mary J. Blige's albums understands that the "queen of hip-hop soul" would much rather push artistic envelopes than lick 'em. With No More Drama, her enlisting of hip-hop's finest beat-makers to create lush musical soundscapes is nothing short of genius. On the Dr. Dre-produced "Family Affair," Blige implores the club set to "get crunk 'cause Mary's back" as she introduces some new slang to the hip-hop vernacular ("holleration"). "Steal Away" is a classic Neptunes-induced head-nodder in the "Love Is All We Need" vein, as Pharrell Williams chimes in a Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto. Those who like their R&B straight might be offended by the acoustic guitar solo by Lenny Kravitz on "PMS," or the album's title track, which samples the theme from The Young and the Restless soap opera. But listen to "Where I've Been" (a redemptive tale of Blige's not-so-rapid ascent from the 'hood, featuring guest raps from Eve) and the Missy Elliott-assisted "Never Been," and misgivings vanish. Whereas past Mary J. efforts were limited to tales of relationships gone awry, her outlook is more diverse and upbeat, while her scratchy, bluesy vocals have become more expansive, too. She raps on "Love," scats on "Beautiful Day," chats on the a cappella "Forever No More," and caps No More Drama with a string of uplifting ballads ("2 U," "In the Meantime"), neatly polishing off a release that will stand as one of the best of 2001. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars ..beautiful!.......2006-12-29

I hadn't listened to this CD for a while for some reason. Boy was I missing out! This is one of, if not my absolute, favorite Mary J. albums. It is truly beatiful. Her vocals on here are wonderful, the production is great. Every single song is great!

I actually like the original version a little bit better. I would recommend finding the original and buying it along with this one. This re-release is still great and the new songs keep the quality and integrity of the album. (That is very rare with re-issues.)

I definitely recommend this, along with the original if you can find it. This is one of my all time favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars One of her greatest.......2006-07-17

I have several albums by Mary J Blije and have to say that this is by far one of her best. I am completely satisfied and happy with my purchase and would reccomend it to anyone, whether they are already a fan of hers or not. Even my father loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing Realism Back Into The R&B World.......2006-06-14

After reviewing THE BREAKTHROUGH, which besides WHAT'S THE 411? is in my opinion Mrs. Blige's true tour de force, I thought I'd give here critically acclaimed NO MORE DRAMA some love. NO MORE DRAMA prior to THE BREAKTHROUGH was her last truly great album. LOVE & LIFE was good, but it wasn't quite as good as the album before it (NO MORE DRAMA). Once again on this album, Mary J. Blige sings of heartaches and working through life's struggles. While with other R&B artists this subject matter or topic might become tired and boring, Mary always makes for a good album, even on her weaker releases, which are very few.

NO MORE DRAMA opens up bombastically with the hit though too short in duration "Love" in which Mary J. Blige asserts her role as the queen of hip-hop soul. Perhaps what the draw is here is the catchy chorus in which the background vocals say each letter in the word "LOVE" using it as an irregular acronym in a sense. Following the opening anthem is perhaps Blige's best known universal hit and her only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, "Family Affair". It is what it is, just an exceptional track with exceptional productions and seering vocals. "He Think I Don't Know" has the queen talking about a man thinking his women is stupid of what he is doing and stupid in general. While the song is long and drawn out, it is an irresistable listen. One of the real treats comes with "PMS" which uses a sample of the Al Green Soul classic "Simply Beautiful". Blige is at her most soulful. Later on, the Soap Opera theme sampled "No More Drama" is great with a hip-hop beat and painful-soul renching vocals from MJB. Finally, "Testimony" is a great, uplifting track and shows a more cheerful Blige.

Overall, this album is a production masterpiece with a number of samples and soulful hip-hop backdrops for Blige to paint with her incredibly soulful voice. Overall, it isn't the masterpiece of THE BREAKTHROUGH, but it is an incredibly strong album, period. 4 stars.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

4 out of 5 stars Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars relaxation.......2007-05-13

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-07

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

5 out of 5 stars Talented violinist.......2007-03-29

When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Lucia does for Violin what Ian Anderson did for the flute.......2007-01-22

I saw the beautiful and gypsy-like Lucia play with Ian Anderson a few months ago, and she was absolutely amazing! The whole audience kept chanting "bring back the girl!" everytime Ian stepped back on stage, and these were all tried-n-true Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson fans who just paid over $100/tkt to see him. She played Stairway to Heaven on the violin, and totally rocked the house. She smoothly slipped from classical to jazz to rock, much like Ian does. Hopefully it will be on an upcoming CD. As she becomes better known, I am sure she will bring a whole new generation to the Violin, just like Ian got a whole generation of Baby-Boomers playing the flute.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, from Start to Finish! .......2006-09-22

This CD is filled with great oldies tunes from start to finish. If you like oldies, BUY THIS CD!!! For those of you who would like more music from the motion picture, buy The Big Chill Deluxe Edition, which is a 2-disc set with 19 hits. Great music, I can't say enough about this CD.

1 out of 5 stars The Big Chill.......2003-04-01

If I can't buy the cd with ALL THE SONGS that were played in the movie then I won't buy it. I know one cd could cover the entire movie so why can't this be done? Does it concern copy rights and releases?

5 out of 5 stars A CD I Can Leave On.......2002-06-20

Now THAT's an ultimate complement. The CD's you can let play, and you don't have to flip to any particular song, because, guess what, they're ALL fantastic! In addition, the movie was fantastic, so I think remembering the movie kind of helps me along when I'm listening. However, seen the movie or not, this is a great soundtrack and it's fun to listen to, while you're cleaning, lying around, or even throwing a party. I highly recommend; enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Where are the other missing songs?.......2001-05-21

I have seen the movie and I know that there are more songs than even these. What happened to Gimme Some Lovin and You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones. Just to name a few songs that are missing. I wish it could have been a complete soundtrack it owuld have worth spending the money.

4 out of 5 stars Great 60's music!.......2000-05-28

I bought this many years ago when it came out. What's not to love about "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "What's Going On"? The rest are okay, too. This is a good compilation of 60's music, possibly better than the first Big Chill soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars NOT ENOUGH STARS CAN ACCURATELY EXPRESS THE FEEL OF THIS ALBUM HERE.......2007-01-31

billy stewart is just the man!!!!! i had the double album and like a dummy i left it in the sun!!!! never have i felt such woe!!!! i had to get this cd!!!! everything on here is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!! i think that there should be a written law that no matter if ya wanna or not, ONE SHOULD NOT REMAKE A BILLY STEWART SONG!!!! no one, and i mean absolutely NO ONE that i have heard remake his stuff has done the man justice. i so hate that he was killed the way he was. i wonder what he would've done in the progression of the 70s. shoot, i wonder what he would've done in the 80s.......especially the early 80s. he will never be forgotten here........best believe that. why? well, listen to the doggone album and find out now!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Long-Forgotten Motor Mouth.......2006-04-11

To say that Billy Stewart epitomized soul music in the mid 1960s is probably equivalent to saying that Johnny Cash epitomized country pop during the 60s as a whole.

It is also ironic to me that his best charted attempts reached only 26 & 24 on the "Hot 100" charts. While "Summertime" typified his style, sonically "I Do Love You", & "Sitting In The Park" are unbeatable in terms of actually letting the sea roll & drown you in the essence of the music.

This piece features all of his known & (obviously, to some) a few of his little-known sides. I recommend it to any one who is a collector, although there are a couple of packages out there for less.

5 out of 5 stars Great Chi-town soul.......2006-01-13

Billy Stewart brought a unique vocal style to the Chess soul roster. Chess is often overlooked when great 60s soul is considered, but in fact they had a great team of writers, producers, musicians and singers, and put out side after side of great soul masterpieces. Billy Stewart was one of their most consistant artists, and covered a wide range of styles. Anyone who has a deep appreciation of 60s soul will treasure this collection. This collection, mastered early in the digital era, lacks some punch, but the sound is consistant, and the selection of songs superb. I would like to see MCA/Chess do an expanded and upgraded collection, but until that happens, this is the choice. The Millenium Collection sounds much better, but only contains 11 songs. Believe me, that is not enough.

5 out of 5 stars Such a gifted performer; one wonders what might have been.......2005-06-25

Like Little Willie John and Jesse Belvin before him, Billy Stewart remains a largely unknown and vastly underrated figure in the history of R&B. Billy Stewart was discovered by the legendary Bo Diddley who was so impressed by his ability to play the piano that he asked Billy to join his band back in 1956. Diddley even got Stewart a recording contract with his record label Chess and Billy recorded "Billy's Blues". That one went virtually unnoticed and Billy Stewart would not venture back into the studio for another seven years.
In my opinion, "One More Time" is and always has been the best Billy Stewart collection available. For when Billy resumed recording at Chess in 1962 he made several outstanding and really unique records. Most oldies fans will probably recall a couple of Billy's earliest hits including "I Do Love You" and the magnificent "Sitting In The Park" from the golden year 1964.
But Billy wanted to appeal to a wider audience and was willing to take chances to achieve that goal. In 1966 he recorded the LP
"Billy Stewart Teaches Old Standards New Tricks". The first single released from that album was Billy's rollicking interpretation of the George Gershwin classic "Summertime". I think Ol' George would have approved. That tune would go on to become one of the surprise hits of 1966. It was dynamite! "One More Time" offers the album version of that song which is nearly five minutes long. The follow-up single to "Summertime" was Billy's remake of the great Doris Day hit "Secret Love". I have always enjoyed that one as well. Billy Stewart had about a dozen songs appear on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1969. Of the songs you are probably not familiar with I would recommend the uptempo "Because I Love You" as well as "Sugar and Spice", a tune that would remind you quite a bit of Marvin Gaye's "Pride and Joy". This should not be surprising as Marvin and Billy worked together frequently in the Washington D.C. area in the late 50's and early 60's.
"One More Time" offers the listener a nice retrospective on the tragically short career of this talented artist. In January 1970, Stewart's car ran off a road in North Carolina and plunged into a river killing him and three members of his band.
Billy Stewart was not a particularly prolific recording artist.
He much preferred performing "live" and devoted most of his energy to that. Although we can never know, Billy Stewart most likely would have wound up pursuing a career in jazz. He possessed all the attributes of a great jazz artist. If you have never heard him sing anything but his signature song "Summertime" you owe it to yourself to give this disc a listen. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Billy Stewart (Great Vocals).......2004-12-30

This great singer was slightly ahead of my time but I saw him live my very first concert at age 10 and boy could he sing. There are about 5 songs on this CD which bring back memories of that show and beleive me his live vocals were even better than the recordings. Very nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Forever More - James Ingram.......2007-01-10

This cd showed different sides of James Ingram. His versatility came alive in the different styles of singing these love songs.
His choice of partners for duets added to the emotions of some songs. This is a great collection of music from a seasoned performer.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most Underrated Talents Ever.......2006-09-06

James Ingram has always been One of my All time Favorite Artists. Vocally He brings so much depth&Soul. I enjoy the way he tackles various songs&the way he handles arrangements. James Ingram's voice is velvet. The songs on this CD are forever beautiful and romantic.

Three of James' biggest hits, Just Once, One Hundred Ways and I Don't Have the Heart are all RERECORDED!!!! Why do they do that? It's not even listed on the CD, but on the inside only after you've bought the CD, opened it, and can't bring it back! Besides, most of the tracks are the same as on the Best of CD, although there are some previously unreleased tunes on this one. Of course, there are also some gems on the Best of that are missing from this one.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, Timeless, Priceless .......2004-11-17

If I could have anyone sing @ my next wedding & as Nat Cole is in heaven, it would be James Ingraham. I have renewed a relationship (after loosing my husband very unexpectedly 11/03/03) & we both have discovered many things about each other including how much we love James Ingraham and one of our all time favorite movies is "Best Friends" with the song "How Do you Keep the Music Playing?" I would have him sing his songs with John Tesh "Forever More" and "Give Me Foreever, I Do." Talk about dream wedding.
