Adderley's burning 1959 live recording In San Francisco was something of a hit for the altoist and his quintet. Fully aware of the high standards they'd set, Cannon and producer Orrin Keepnews decided to return to the Jazz Workshop three years later for another hard-swinging affair. By then, Adderley's band had been fleshed out to a sextet distinguished by the presence of a second wind player in Yusef Lateef. Joe Zawinul had settled into the piano chair a year earlier, while Adderley's cornetist brother Nat and the rhythm team of Sam Jones and Louis Hayes were all holdovers from the previous S.F. record. The exotic, ominous one-chord vamp "Primitivo" makes effective use of Lateef's evocative flute and oboe touches. Another highlight is Nat's 11-minute "Jive Samba," a bossa-nova-based groove that actually found its way onto jukeboxes in severely abridged form. Here Lateef's flute proves to be a dynamic addition to the solo procession. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
An Absolute Classic.......2005-09-21
Every track on this CD is very good or better and most are better. The music was recorded when Cannonball had expanded his group to a sextette by adding Yusef Lateef. The group made the most of their size by adopting a big band sound with horns playing figures under the soloist. Jive Samba is a classic and listening to Jessica's Day, you can feel the band swinging off the bandstand. Cannonball made many good CD's but this is absolutely the one I would start with.
"Swingin'!!!!".......2001-02-14
I was stopped dead in my tracks the other day while I was browsing in a record store when I heard something instantly familiar from my childhood, playing over the stores sound system. It was " The Jive Samba" by the Cannonball Adderley Sextet, which I'd heard my parents play again and again, and I did once I got my little five year old fingers all over it!!! After being out of print for many years, this classic album has been released on CD. Recorded over three days of performances at San Francisco's legendary Jazz Workshop in September 1962. Adderley's band featured his brother Nat on cornet, Yusef Lateef on saxes, flute and oboe, and pianist Joe Zawinul, later of Weather Report and writer of Cannonball's biggest hit "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". The highlights of this album include the aforementioned "Jive Samba", "Primitivo", "Unit 7", and "Mellow Buno". Even Cannonball's between song introductions are enjoyable to listen to. It's so great to see this great album available again for everyone to enjoy.
Bebop Revisited.......2001-01-27
Long unavailable on disc, this well-known and soulful set is finally ready for your CD player. Recorded in the lively--if noisy--Jazz Workshop of San Francisco, mecca to those of us who grew up musically in the Bay Area of the 60's. 'Jive Samba' is the best-known cut, but 'Primitivo' is not to be missed.

I thought that this CD would be a bit more "abstrakt" from the title of it, but as it turns out I was happy with it for slightly different reasons. This one is wall-to-wall flow.

Barry Harris: a musician's musician, and top bop pianist.......2002-11-08
This record is a good opportunity to meet Barry Harris. This extraordinary bop piano player, born in Detroit in 1929,and still active in music,is one of the most underrated jazz musicians, considering his incredible talent. It's very curious, because he recorded many albums,as a member of a group or under his own name.It is easy to name several of his own records, which all are very great ones: "Preminado","listen to Barry Harris","chasin' the Bird" on Riverside,"plays Tadd Dameron","plays Barry Harris" on Xanadu,"live at Maybeck" on Concord, for example;but he ver was recognized as the immense bop piano player he is.
A "natural child" of Bud Powell,a disciple of the Master,Tadd Dameron,an exceptionnal piano teacher,he survived for years living at Baronness Nica de Koenigswarter's home (just like Monk, who wrote the sublime "Pannonica" for this lady). He deserves to be revered by jazzfans just like Tommy Flanagan or Hank Jones.
This concert was recorded in San Francisco,at the Jazz Workshop,May 15 and 16,1960.Barry plays with two very great musicians: Sam Jones, bass, and Louis Hayes, drums. They play two anthems of bebop: Bird's "Moose the mooche" and Dizzy's "woody'n you",two standards,"Star eyes" and "don't blame me",three originals by Harris,"curtain call","Lolita" and "morning coffee",and a famous theme written by Louis Jordan,"Is you is or is you ain't my baby".Bud Powell's influence is obvious here,as on any Barry Harris' record.
As I wrote before,Barry Harris belongs to the same family of piano players as Hank Jones (born 1918),Tommy Flanagan (1930-2001),the younger Kenny Barron, and another master of the 88 keys,a bebop pianist but a child of Teddy Wilson, the amazing Duke Jordan. They are no spectacular players;but they can say so much while playing just the essential.Like Monk also,or Duke.Barry Harris is one of the last survivors of the bop era. Please, listen to his music now !!!
Excellent.......2001-10-02
This is a great piano trio (bass and drums) 1950s - one of my favorites.
One of Barry's Finest Hours.......2000-12-24
Most jazz aficionados will know Barry Harris as the pianist on Lee Morgan's classic Blue Note album "The Sidewinder," but he has also had a productive career as a leader that has lasted over five decades. And this CD, "Barry Harris At The Jazz Workshop," is one of his finest moments. This live recording for Riverside is from May 15 & 16, 1960 in San Francisco, and features Barry's telepathic trio of Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums -- two gentlemen who have collaborated on too many all-star albums to name. It takes a really special piano trio session to get my heart pumping, and this one sure does the job. Some of the tracks, especially "Star Eyes," have grooves so rhythmic and soulful that they would make a hip-hop DJ jealous. Fans of great soul jazz will not be let down at "The Jazz Workshop."

title of review.......2004-01-10
Every song is a rich tapestry of guitar tones, melodies, and harmonies. This is like the My Bloody Valentine or Sonic Youth of emo. Genuine guitar gods. The drumming is excellent and creative too. The vocals are the least striking part, but they're still quite nice.
The best Jazz June album (I think).......2002-04-01
This CD is super terrific. I love it to death. It's classic Jazz June, with the great guitar driven rock that they do so well. It's fast, it's catchy, and it's very well played. The lyrics are great, and the recording is great. Everything blends in so well and creates such a beautiful layered sound. It's just a great album to put in and listen to, you can tap your foot to every song. This band never gets old, they just sound so good. There is no comparison, the Jazz June sounds like no other. Give this band a try, and you will definatly not regret it.

Growl and Bop.......2004-03-02
I love the alto sax voice of Earl Bostic. He is an alto version of a Texas Tenor. He has a gritty growling sound that is very hot and lush and lavished and sounds great. If you know who Louis Jordan is then you need to listen to Earl play the horn too. The two go hand in hand, Except that Earl has more growl to his sound. The bluesy bop swing was king then and Earl is one of the great players from that era that is too often over looked for his contributions. I also recommend Sam Butera.

The tapes of these two 1964 San Francisco shows stayed locked up at Columbia Records until the label drew a double-LP from them shortly after Monk's death in 1982. Never issued on CD in the U.S., that album is now superseded by this packed document that nearly doubles its length, restores edited portions of several performances, and adds a dozen performances that sometimes better the original recordings. Monk, saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales, and drummer Ben Riley are unsurprisingly on point for the dates, which are filled with numerous classics from the Thelonious book. Disc one, which features most of the original release, is highlighted by a solo "Memories of You" and a full-quartet "Just You, Just Me" that say much about Monk's emotive capabilities; playful and beautiful, the back-to-back standards are some of the finest gems of his Columbia tenure. Seven of the second CD's first eight cuts, apparently done on the somewhat less shaky sophomore evening, would themselves have made a five-star single album in themselves. The exuberance and care of these renditions of "Well You Needn't," "Bright Mississippi," "Nutty," and other Monk inventions make the Complete Jazz Workshop a linchpin in the genius's onstage catalog. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
This is jazz!.......2001-09-18
This is the way jazz is supposed to sound! There is not one bad song on here and a lot that will stick in your head and keep you humming all day/night. I can imagine monk spinning on stage like he did and like i feel like doing when i listen to these albums. If you like drum solos, they are here. If you like piano, it is here. The bass is here. And all three combined make for an excellent album.
Monk at his best - you can't go wrong with this one.......2001-08-13
Back in March of 1998, the folks at Legacy released the excellent Live at the It Club - Complete, a double CD of Monk and his quartet recorded in Los Angeles in 1964. Monk's concerts during that year were consistently first-rate, and these shows were no exception. If you own a copy of the It Club CDs, you probably noticed in the liner notes that there were plans to reissue the legendary performances from the Jazz Workshop. Well, after almost three and a half years, they're finally in the stores.
The tapes from these shows sat in the vaults at Columbia Records until shortly after Monk's death in 1982. Never issued on CD in the U.S., the new CDs feature thirteen previously unreleased tracks, plus three that were restored to their original lengths. For those of you keeping track of this sort of thing, that adds up to twice as much music as the original double LP. Monk's quartet on this tour was made up of the inimitable Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums.
The quartet is spot on throughout the two CDs, loaded with classics from the Thelonious songbook. Comparing this to the Monk in Tokyo set is like night and day. Aside from the fact that there is an additional hour of music on the Jazz Workshop CDs, the band is much more dynamic as well. Gales' bass work is much livelier than Butch Warren's ever was, and while Riley's drumming emulates some of the trademark Blakey fills, he still manages to retain his own style.
Disc one features most of the songs from the original release, and is loaded with Monk brilliance. After an inspired workout from Rouse on "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are," Monk turns in what can only be described as a classic solo--quoting a brief chorus of "Blue Monk" in the process. On "Well You Needn't," Rouse again leads the solos, followed by Monk, Gales and Riley. After the drum solo, Rouse and the others come in to bring it to a close. A slightly faster (and shorter) rendition of the song also appears on the second disc.
With the exception of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," the second CD is the better of the two. Not that anything on disc one is a slouch, but disc two may as well be titled Monk's Greatest Hits. It's hard to go wrong with tunes like "Blue Monk," "'Round Midnight," "Straight, No Chaser," "Bemsha Swing"... This list goes on and on.
The sound quality on the CDs is crystal clear. These sessions could have been recorded yesterday. Like the recording at the It Club, this set of tunes is chock full of playfully beautiful renditions of back-to-back jazz standards. My only real complaint (like Monk in Tokyo) is the use of the bulky double-disc packaging, as opposed to a slim-line jewel box. Aside from that (which is really immaterial--after all, it's the music that matters), Live at The Jazz Workshop is essential for both seasoned Monkophiles and newbies alike.
A JAZZ GENIUS AT HIS FINEST!!!.......2001-07-14
I have been waiting for this reissue for 3 years now; the liner notes of "Live at the It Club" mentioned this material and that it would be released soon. Well, soon turned into three years, but it was well worth the wait! Let's start with the sound, which is crystal clear, that sounds like it was recorded yesterday. All of the players (Monk, Rouse, Riley, Gales) turn in top-notch performances which flow very niceley from tune to tune. Only a couple of songs are repeated, though it is nice to hear them twice; this CD set is loaded with music (2.5 hours long). My only question is why Legacy decided to release this in the bulky two-disc packaging, as opposed to the more modern type with the plastic insert? If you like Monk, or just jazz in general, you will want to get this set.
Very nice recording.......2001-07-12
Monk's live repertoire was always somewhat limited. Therefore, there isn't much of a difference between different live albums. Like the recording at the "It Club", this set of tunes, recorded at the "Jazz Workshop" is plainly stellar. On top of that, the two performances on the two CDs don't really overlap track-wise. Therefore, if you're looking for a first good live recording of Monk's music, this set is definitely highly recommended. The performance itself is also very nice. On the average, the songs are a little bit shorter than on, say, the "It Club" or on the newly released "Tokyo" set - less drum and bass solos. That makes the set a little bit more enjoyable because after the fifth bass solo or drum solo I usually get a little bit bored you know. Anyway, this is a great set and I recommend it to collectors as well as to newbies.

Mind-blazingly good.......2007-01-15
I'm wondering whether the reviewer Mike Richman actually listened to this album, or just looked at the names of the personnel and decided from there how the music sounds. I challenge anyone with even a remote interest in jazz to listen to this version of Fables of Faubus and propose there is "nothing exciting" about it. This band, though obviously propelled by the rhythm section of Mingus and Richmond, tear into this piece like never before. As an interesting experiment, and to illuminate the genius of Charles Mingus, listen to "Fables of Faubus" as recorded on Mingus Ah Um, then the version on Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (featuring audible lyrics, as well as Dolphy on sax), then listen to this version.
Over the course of 4 or 5 years, Mingus evolved this piece from a standard bop tune with a great theme, to a veritable epic masterwork with interweaving melodies and furious energy. In terms of sheer virtuosity and brilliant composing, this performance nearly rivals Mingus's greatest work, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. This version of "Fables" is at a higher tempo than the previous recordings, yet the band never lets up for a moment. Just when you think the piece may be winding down to a finale, the players introduce a completely new section, or they revitalize a melody from 10 minutes earlier. Even at 23 minutes in length, this performance doesn't drag for a second. Along the way, you get Mingus and Richmond howling along with the music, John Handy pulling aural cartwheels in order to keep up with them, and, as an additional musical affirmation of ethnicity in this already politically-charged composition, the whole band revisits the rollicking theme of Ysabel's Table Dance from Mingus's Tijuana Moods. No, jazz fans, there is no lack of excitement here.
In addition to New Fables, you also get Meditations (on a pair of wire cutters), a piece about integration, whose sophistication and understatement puts Mingus on par with almost any of his classical music contemporaries. The torment in his bowed bass will leave you haunted and speechless.
It is a shame that Mingus withdrew from the jazz scene amidst a slew of personal and mental problems, right at the height of his creative powers in 1965. This 1964 disc, along with the newly reissued UCLA performance, are testament to his legacy, along with Ellington, as the greatest of all jazz composers, and a powerful, unpredictable bandleader. Charles Mingus continued to exert his compositional prowess on "Let My Children Hear Music" and his other late-period releases, but never again would any of his bands match the fire and fury attained during the era of RIGHT NOW.
This is easily the best Mingus album I own........2006-09-07
Listen to this version of New Fables. There are so many parts that swing so intensely... I really can't explain it any better than this band plays it. Listen! Mingus on bass, Dannie Richmond (he sounds absolutely killer on this album) on drums, Cliff Jordan on tenor (best I've ever heard him sound,) Jane Getz on piano (she was 16 when she made this recording) and special guest John Handy (always a treat) on alto. Buy this, you won't be disappointed.
Incredible Live Performance.......2005-05-06
I am a huge Mingus fan, and I think this recording of New Fables is the most intense version I have heard. The way the bass takes it upon itself to lead the band into each part of the song is amazing. Must be listened to at top volume.
Don't Buy It Right Now, Maybe Later.......2000-07-27
"Right Now: Live at the Jazz Workshop" is a typically good live performance from Charles Mingus, there's just nothing overly exciting about it. The two extended compositions "Fables of Faubus" and "Meditations" are available on numerous other recordings, and these are not definitive versions. Also, this recording is from 1964, and there are two other live recordings from the same year that I would easily recommend ahead of this one -- "Town Hall Concert (OJC)" and "Revenge." Both of these CDs feature all-star bands including Eric Dolphy, whereas "Right Now" is an average band, with Clifford Jordan and the ever-present Dannie Richmond the only notables. This isn't a bad Mingus album (he didn't make many of those), but there are a lot better things out there.
