5 out of 5 stars Man, this one is Smooooooth........2005-06-23

In about every case, I call it like I see it or hear it. This album is just about one of the best smooth jazz albums that passed my ears in a while. It is nothing less then refreshing. All I could say is pick it up and just sit back with a glass of wine with or without you wife and enjoy. It's like a good dinner, it just stays with you. Another one for the JAZZ COLLECTION. A MUST.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth jazz fusion with passion and intellect........2002-08-22

Bill Evans (the saxophonist) fuses jazz and hip-hop on this disc in a way that doesn't short-change the jazz half of the equation. Ahmed Best chants intelligent lyrics, albeit with a rapper's stiff cadence, that add depth without compromising the underlying jazz aesthetic. He's featured on two songs, "Reality" and "La Di Da". The album opener, "Swing Hop", also successfully blends the excitement of instrumental jazz and hip-hop vocals in a compelling manner. The remainder of the material ranges from jazz-funk to Brazilian influences. Evan's rich, warm tone weaves a seductive spell throughout, supported by Jim Beard's keyboards, Lee Ritenour's guitar, Steve Ferrone's drumming, and the basses of Marcus Miller, Victor Bailey, and Mark Egan, among others. With this, his best studio recording yet, Bill's well on the way to becoming as significant an artist as his piano-playing namesake.

this is a must have!
Bill Evans(the sax player)shares more then just his name .
he shares an incredible sense of music.this cd combines
several elements to create a unique sound that has to be heard to
truly be enjoyed.Check out "the sunday after"if this doesn't set the mood for whatever you have planned, then you're dead!other favorites are "flash in dreamland"/"reality"and my all-time favorite-"coravilas" definately a "vien melter"...Buy this now

5 out of 5 stars This music is incredible!!!.......2002-06-24

This album is an incredible mix of Jazz and Hip-Hop. I was introduced to Bill Evans on a Jazziz magazine CD and was hooked to the song "Swing Hop". Enough so to actually buy the CD and it was fantastic. "Reality" has to be my favorite song if I must just choose one. I love music that combines different genres together and Bill knows how to do that. The only downfall is the musician's name. He shares it with Bill Evans the jazz pianist and it can be confusing finding his stuff. So watch out for that.

Smooth, crafty, pop music here. As half of the very talented Finn brothers, Tim has made soem memorable music. Thia first solo outing is a great, feel good pop record that is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Finn At His Finest.......2000-09-21

Tim Finn's first solo outing is a triumph. Made 10 years after he was told to get off the stage at a music festival in New Zealand (when the acoustic Split Ends were struggling for recognition) Tim had come a long way since then.

The best track on the album is the catchy "Fraction Too Much Friction", which was actually written in the late 1970s. (It didn't fit in with the Split Enz repertoire at the time.)Little did Tim realize he had written a huge hit.

The irony of this great album was that Tim felt so guilty about its success. Tim felt like he had deserted Split Enz when they were on their last legs. He picked up a heap of accolades at the Australian Music Awards while Split Enz got nothing.

This album epitomizes 80s music. I think this would be the best of Tim's solo ventures, although "Before and After" comes a close second.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Finn is the best without a doubt !!.......1999-10-08

The album was as clean and vibrent as all the rest of his works and I for one love it all. If I only had one artists' music on an island it would have to be Tim Finn.

4 out of 5 stars Forget Crowded House - Tim Finn's the pride of kiwi music.......1999-09-03

Neil's gorgeous & sings like an angel but Tim is the more talented of the Finn brothers. And the "Before and After" CD is much better than this one - buy them both!

5 out of 5 stars This is great.......2004-06-04

I just got this CD the other day and I am buying a couple for gifts.

I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it. The arrangements stay true to the original arrangements and the music is fresh and exciting to listen to.

I think this CD is great and will make great gifts for my friends who like Janet Jackson.

1 out of 5 stars An insult to Janet-loving audiophiles........2004-06-02

Given the lofty title of this recording and the other reviews of it on Amazon.com, I had rather high hopes for this purchase. Now I'm just hoping there's a used CD store in town that will take this sophomoric rubbish.

As the credits on this CD indicate (warn?), this so-called "string quartet" is actually just TWO people: one playing a real violin and the other playing a SAMPLER with some string sounds, drums, and a few miscellaneous synthesizers in a half-assed attempt to make these songs sound vaguely like the real McCoys. Anyone who knows so little about chamber music as to mistake the strings and drums (other than the lead violin) for real instruments and not the sequenced electronic imitations that they are is probably not an appropriate audience for a seemingly high-brow musical concept that one would expect a "string quartet" to be in the first place. In other words, whether you have trouble comprehending the intellectual complexity of a Britney Spears song or you have an advanced degree in musicology, I can't imagine that you'd want to waste your time and money on such a CD.

And if you're thinking about buying it for a good laugh, unfortunately, while this trash is cheesy, it's not bad enough to stretch into campy. Think of it as William Hung after a year of voice lessons. Still awful, but no longer laughable.

Think of it as a tribute to Janet Jackson when you decide to pass on buying such a poorly conceived knock-off. Or let me know if you'd want to buy it from me for a big discount! Just remember that I won't accept a return...no matter how badly you want to give this "earlobe malfunction" back. You can't say I didn't warn you. CJF

I am gushing!!!

This is the most fabulous CD that you can get! First off it's Damita Jo songs which everyone just loves.... But then they are performed with violins and orchestras... It's Grace meets Will with a passion for life!!!

If you have a special event or a romantic rendevous with someone this music will tantilize your senses and make everyone know that you have A1 class!!!

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome! So Janet!.......2004-04-01

OMG!!!

The first String Quartet Tribute I got was Nickelback and I sooooo loved it!!!

I just got this CD today and it is unbelievable!!! Janet MUST have had something to do with making of it because it is SOOOOOO Janet!

My favs are Control, Love Will Never Do Without You, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Everytime and Pleasure Principle.

The production is amazing! It has drums and bass with a string quartet and it grooves like the original renditions of all the songs.

Rhythm Nation reminded me of the superbowl performance cause it has marching drums in it just like her performance did......KickIt!!!

I'm buying two copies right now for my two best friends who are huge JJ fans like me... I know they'll love it too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another great Jim Beard Disk...yawn.......2005-07-22

Jim Beard has chops to burn, an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz, is a wizardly producer, and is one of the few people who can make synthesizers sound warm and human, but you'll never catch him showing off. Beard puts all his expertise in the service of ideas, wherever his imagination and boundless enthusiasm for seemingly incompatible genres of music might lead him. In that, Truly is a typical Jim Beard recording. To those not listening closely, Truly might sound like smooth jazz, which could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, Beard's music is extremely adventurous, combining elements of marches, jazz, circus music, various world musics, humor, and so on. For those who like Jim Beard, check out his latest, Advocate, which came out on the ESC label in 1999. Typing "ESC JIM BEARD ADVOCATE" in google will lead you to the record label in short order. The US record companies are so clueless that Jim was forced to go to Germany to be able to make Advocate. Please support this great artist so he will be able to make more CDs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST works of art I've ever listened to.................2005-06-04

I'm a Jazz lover who became aware of Jim Beard through his work with Sax man Bill Evans. Some of my favorite Evans cuts were colaborations with Beard and I was really impressed with everything about them, so I decided to give him a try.

Truly was my first J.B. album, and right out of the box I was impressed. (The cover has a picture of a clown made of blown glass that sets the tone for this collection of songs; it's an unusual work of art that is highly creative and even subjectively beautiful after you stare for a while....) When I popped it into the CD player it almost blew me away!

This is a FANTASTIC collection of very diverse songs, each of which is extremely interesting and entertaining on a number of different levels. There are elements of Classical, Samba, Rock, Funk, and even Hip-Hop, masterfully woven into the 11 cuts on this album, and they ALL work.... sometimes extremely well. Beard really does an excellent job of conveying a variety of emotions here, not only with his composition and performances, but also with subtle changes in instrumentation and dynamics.

If you like experemental music.... buy this CD. If you like Jazz.... buy this CD. You will NOT be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Truly... an engaging composer!.......2002-06-09

Jim Beard has once again given us the gift of pure and beautiful talent. Like 'Sun of the Sun' and 'Lost at the Carnival', Beard creates music from scratch. One quality that Jim Beard has established, atleast with me, is instant likablity And like a fresh baked piece of blackberry pie, coffee and good company, the richly layered potential of life is discovered.
Does this music belong in the "Jazz" section? Absolutely, right next to the Weather Report CDs. and others who pioneer new paths for others to follow. Indeed! Down with alphabetical devisions.
Want more? Buy this Album.

5 out of 5 stars Highly original, category-stretching, occasionally brilliant.......1998-12-17

The music on this album is almost impossible to categorize, but one possible label might be "post-modernist" fusion; "post-modernist" in the sense that Jim Beard manages to incorporate a dizzying variety of musical styles, eras, devices, timbres, riffs, cliches, devices into a suprisingly coherent, masterfully wrought and totally LISTENABLE end product. On the surface the CD is a hodge-podge of styles, but repeated listenings reveal it to be a meticulously crafted and even occasionally brilliant musical statement. His mastery of studio technique combined with an uncanny instinct for taking simple ideas and imbuing them with deeper harmonic and rhythmic beauty (a la Bach's treatment of chorale tunes)is one of the most delightful aspects of this album. I nearly fell off my chair when I heard the blatantly corny "Dooly-wop" chorus of the opening track. But to my amazement, the track works amazingly well, thanks to the subtle harmonic nudges he includes throughout. Beard manages to infuse jazz-fusion with something it seriously lacks: a sense of humor. This aspect of Beard's latest work is somewhat of a surprise. I knew Jim Beard slightly when I was in graduate school many years ago, and back then he struck me as a very serious jazz pianist with a love for synthesizers and diverse styles of music. His evident love of synthesizers (including the "old-fashioned" timbres of the earlier models, the Moog, etc.) is evident in this album. The goofy, post-modernist sense of humor came as a pleasant surprise to me. (Check out the CD cover and titles, for instance.) One final note: Jim Beard is probably one of the most under-rated pianists of his generation, partly because he subsumes his wonderful touch, his harmonic mastery, and his technique into the music itself. He obviously works more as a composer and a craftsman of sounds---much like Zawinul in this way---but his piano playing is truly wonderful and stands on its own (like Zawinul's). This album is, if nothing else, a lot of fun. For what it's worth, my 2-year-old daughter loves it.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Moment In Music.......2006-05-09

Trilok Gurtu and his band The Glimpse shine on this album with such a successful marriage of tradition Indian and modern contempary jazz fusion. There is no cliche here just pure talent, ingenious composition, rich melody, heart, soul and a stella performance of some of the world greatest musicians (although to most mainstream listeners they would be unknowns). Kathak is a must have for any lover of music that enjoys multi-layered, complex and diverse world music that is driven by mind blowing grooves and sublime bass playing. All of this rich rhythm is surrounded by an array of tradition Indian instuments and vocal performances: the end result is a sound never to be heard in this way previously or since. Gurtu's follow up album 'African Fantasy' is also brilliant, although takes a more mellow tact, blending in African music and is far less intense than 'Kathak'.

'Kathak' is really a musician's feast with displays of speed, feel and melody from all performers involved that would burn and bury anyone but the best at their craft.

Gurtu's percussive display is astonishing but it is the collaboration and accompaniment??of musicians such as Kai Eckhardt de Camargo on bass that open the musical doors to audience's that would not normally venture to cultural music such as Tradition Indian without such a beautiful transition (such as this album).

'Kathak' is on a whole other evolutionary step from most music made and has enriched my life deeply.

5 out of 5 stars Music from ALL FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH!! AMAZING!.......1999-09-07

Trilok Gurtu, what else do I need to say? A drummer easily up to par with John McLauglin (John McLaughlin Trio) works again with his Trio mate Kai Eckhardt from Africa and Germany along with members from India and Italy.... I saw these magnificent players on September 6 at Seattle's Bumbershoot. This is a truely unique combination, influenced by such diverse acts as the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Dave Matthews and Bela Fleck, just to name a few. Not buying this album is just as well as cheating yourself of...well anything.

Underrecorded and often overlooked, James Spaulding gained his reputation when the lines between the mainstream and the avant-garde were blurred. His catholic chops, though, haven't kept Spaulding from mining a pretty standard approach to melody--which he clearly loves. His flutes mark half the tracks on Escapade, opening the CD with a lilting energy and taking on atmospheric touches throughout. Spaulding still scorches on alto, reaching for the tallest notes and skidding through the midregister aided by his equally high-gear band. Don Sickler often plays foil on trumpet, as does Ray Drummond on bass. Pianist John Hicks most closely approximates Spaulding's range, playing sweetly on "Warm Valley" and dancing through the quick take on "Just One of Those Things." Rudy Van Gelder's production gives the entire session a Blue Note vibe, and Spaulding thrives in the warm sonics. He's a fast, flurrying, multitalented veteran, and it's great to hear him sound so vital. --Andrew Bartlett

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Master On a Roll ! ! !.......2001-03-22

Its not so uncommon to hear Jazz legends of Spaulding's stature (and historical lineage) sounding a bit out of place when they try to do (or redo) their thing in the new millenium... afterall, that was then, this was now. Not true with Spaulding... James Spaulding is neither stuck in the past nor a slave of the dictates of the future. All in all he is a deep and soulful hard bop master, who has a lot to say everytime he picks up that alto or flute of his. - - When Spaulding plays, you listen, and you never exactly know what you're in for... He can be profound, earthy and melodic at times, or wildly outside, experimental yet visciously swinging and often all of this in the course of a breath, yet he always lands on the right note !

Escapades shows the master in Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Kenny Washington, Don Sicker, John Hicks and Ray Drummond tackling a great choice of tunes, including three Mobley pieces and some Grant Green. - - Like many of the classic Hard Bop sessions of the '60s, not only does the star shine, but the ensemble works great together. Don Sickler in particular, proves himself not only to be a great soloist, but a wonderful accompaniest who's lines brilliantly compliment Spaulding's rich melodies, especially in the opening track "Escapade".

There is one other great thing about this CD I should mention - - its clear to anyone who's heard his other recent albums that he's on a roll, and clearly ESCAPADE is proof that he's not letting up. - - Last month, for example, I had James on my "Remembering Eddie Jefferson" session, and there were a few tricky tunes which we wound up doing a retake or two on... each time it lead to a major crisis as everyone (from the people in the mixing room to the musicians) didn't want to lose his solo... but the next time we'd cut, he'd even lay something heavier. - - This is one cat who has the music in him, and ESCAPADE has afforded him an ingenuine vehicle for getting it out !

Adam Holzman and his band Brave New World have created an edgy progressive-funk concept album for the post-millenial age of fear. Inspired by bizarre events while on tour in Eastern Europe, The Big Picture is a science fiction soundtrack blending heavy funk, 90's cyber jazz, Miles and Weather Report influences. Former Miles Davis keyboardist Adam Holzman continues to carve out his own unique approach to hard-edge keyboard playing. He burns on Wurlitzer electric piano and synthesizers. Drummer Juju House and bass player Freddy Cash lay down some ridiculously thick grooves. Plus, these guys can write. Adventurous and powerful.

    5 out of 5 stars Escapades.......2003-03-12

Escapades was very dramatic and bold. I loved the way the wind instraments blended in with the percussion.

4 out of 5 stars Escapade - 'Due To A Faulty Premonition' (Mother West).......2004-01-20

This is the band's fifth release and '...Premonition' does a great job of fusing krautrock with ambient experimentation. My guess would be that the band members had listened to a fair share of Neu!,Faust and Amon Dull II prior to forming Escapade."Soundtrap" is a winner, starting off acoustic and later builds up as it gets better."When A Squall Line Beckons" is fun to check out and all,but it has an indescribable sound to it as "I See Things" is an eleven-minute epic that makes one feel like they're able to float around in a giant colorful room with hundreds of marshmallows all around them."Singe" is a jazzy freakout track that employs some rather heavy bass."Undoubtedly" is probably the disc's best cut as it's an awesomely beautiful twelve-minute trip through pure sonic mayhem."Postscript A Flickering" is another beautiful gem that brings this trek to a close as it seems that the band's instruments are bidding you,the listener a good night.Nice CD to own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent psych rock soundscapes.......2001-01-02

Listening to this cd is like taking a journey through new lands of sound. It's strange, but not TOO strange. Overall, Escapade concentrates on texture & atmosphere instead of melody, although it's obvious these guys CAN play their instruments! There's lots of cool synth, varied guitar textures, strong drumming and a certain vibe that's hard to describe.

The opener 'Sound Trap' begins softly with acoustic guitar and builds into a throbbing pulsating entity that's minimal in melody but not minimal in texture. 'When A Squall Line Beckons' is the sound of the world almost coming to an end, with powerful swirling waves of sound surrounding an insistent drum beat. 'I See Things' is experimental ambient, and 'Singe' is a weird manic piece of music with an off-kilter rhythm and what sounds like breaking glass piercing through the rising tension. 'Undoubtedly' has a kinda jazz-rock - but not really fusion - jam that has two contrasting guitars: a jazzy electric guitar fighting it out against a squealing acid guitar that spews out solid sheets of noise and controlled feedback. All this settles into the second part which builds up into a hypnotic section with furious tribal drumming being a focal point along with percussive guitar. The last piece, 'Postscript: A Flickering' reminds me of Fripp & Eno, but with darker overtones. Perfect closing track to drift away with.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys Krautrock bands like Can, Ash Ra Tempel or Faust, and also to fans of adventurous psychedelic music & space-rock. A future classic, I dare say!
