Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

Touching.......2007-07-04
There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.
Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27
I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!
the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13
This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.
Very Nice.......2007-03-30
I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.
A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11
The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

Bare Bones Look Into The Count's Columbia Records.......2007-02-24
Despite that the fact that the Verve Music Group holds most of his best known recordings (Decca: mid-late 1930s, & Clef/Verve: most of the 1950s), Basie recorded some interesting stuff for Columbia in the late 1930s. It's also great to hear Lester Young & Sweets Edison solo & Jimmy Rushing sing on the two tunes which he's features. Only problem? This disc is too short! At just under 45 minutes, you'll be wanting more so get this & if you want more, get his box set, "America's #1 Band! The Columbia Years".

Hail Jimmy Rushing.......2003-08-07
The Basie bands are allways tight, and these tracks are no exception. If you like blues shouters like Joe Turner, and you have not yet heard Jimmy Rushing, this is a must have. Rushing is pure power and charisma. You'll be tapping your toes and singing along.

a valuable reissue.......2001-02-04
The Basie band after Lester Young left it was still a great band, as most people know. What's on this disc are some of the excellent big band sides from the band in the early 40's, with wonderful solo work by Buddy Tate and others. Basie also recorded with smaller groups, and some of those sides are here --one group included Don Byas and Buck Clayton, and another Clark Terry and Wardell Gray made during a time when Basie laid down the big band. Interesting music, not always compelling, but worth buying for sure.

Swinging and hot but still..........2007-06-19
Yes, this is a good Joe Williams-Count Basie album, but on one hand, I've heard Williams sounding better with smaller groups (Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry and Coleman Hawkins, etc.) and on the other hand Williams is no match for Jimmy Rushing, as demonstrated on Count Basie at NewportCount Basie at Newport.
And, yes, on the third hand (hm...) there is the question of Ella getting the top billing for doing just one song on the album (and a duet at that!)... Well, on the fourth hand, I've heard Basie's band from this period sounding better without Williams. And, surprise, surprise, probably the most interesting tune of the album is "From Coast to Coast"; not so usual example of succesful blending of Basie's drive with slightly Ellingtonish orchestral subtleties.
(BTW; not that it matters much, but I don't really like Hefti's work for Basie all that much...)
Blows Shingles Off the Roof.......2007-06-13
Like many, I found this packaging a bit deceptive because without close inspection it gives the impression that it's a collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald. This 1999 reissue of the 1957 LP is still welcome. The duet Ella sings with Joe Williams on "Too Close for Comfort" with Count Basie's orchestra has her flawless phrasing, "One thing leads to another..." On what was side one of the LP, Joe Williams' vocals are featured. Unfortunately, I simply don't connect with the Williams' style. His voice isn't beautiful as he talk-sings on "Smack Dab in the Middle." On the bluesy swanky "Amazing Love" which has a terrific band arrangement, Williams' voice warbles. The title track originally started the second side of the LP and so the second half of the CD is much better with the vocalist's absence. On "One O'clock Jump," Basie has some of the sassiest sax and popping trumpets in a wild arrangement that blows the shingles off the roof. "Jamboree" is a short swaggering piece with Basie's piano tinkling distinctively near the end of the arrangement. Williams shows up again on "I Don't Like You No More," which describes my reaction to his vocals. "From Coast to Coast" is an eight & 1/2-minute blowout that frequently shifts gears and gives each of the musicians a solo including Sonny Payne's wild drums. This set has a few stellar tracks, but the Williams' tracks I usually skip. Enjoy!
Great Fidelity 1956 1957 Swing From Basie and Williams........2006-12-05
What we have here is the crack "April In Paris" era Basie band with one Ella F track singing with Joe Williams on "Too Close To Comfort", a bunch of tracks with Joe taking the lead and a few great swinging instrumentals and a few alternative sides.
The whole album works well, great sound, exciting music, especially if you like the croon of Joe Williams.
The famous "Joe Williams sings CD" with Basie is considered the better,no arguing that fact, but this CD is a nice addition to your library.
Great blowing on the 3 versions of One'O'clock Jump here make it all worthwhile.
really good release of the ORIGINAL 1957 LP!.......2005-05-13
I think too many people are assuming that they are buying a compilation CD when they pick up this release. In fact, this was the original album released in 1957. Ella gets top billing becuse she was the biggest of the three "names" at the time. These sessions were laid down between Jan 4, 1956 and April 30, 1957. Each artist gets a chance to showcase their talents and it is apparent that, when they all get together for the few numbers that they all share, they are really swinging and having a great time. Basie's band was in top form, the arrangements were wonderful and the vocals are spot on. This is a terrific window into the past.
This shouldn't be labeled an Ella album........1999-08-17
It's a good album, and I'd give it more stars if I hadn't thought I was purchasing an Ella Fitzgerald album. It was quite a disappointment to put the CD in my player and hear Ella's beautiful voice on so few tracks. Joe Williams is good, but he sounds nothing like Ella. This album should be refiled under Basie or Williams!
