The combination of Don Patterson's supple organ and Booker Ervin's beefy tenor saxophone make this Legends of Acid Jazz volume a riotous listen. Patterson handles his keyboard with the range of touch and nuance of a pianist, dancing flat-fingered over the keys and then holding a riff phrase so it almost vibrates with resonance. Ervin plays a taut horn for all his tenor's size. He plows through notes with a hearty blues backbone, evincing the human cry's thickness and a poignant feel for a loose, grooving jam session. High-stepping soul is the order of the day across this set, with some balladry showing off the smolder of low-lit passion and a heap of musical interplay that recalls some of Ervin's best work jamming with Charles Mingus or on his own albums. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars If you could only own one Melvin Sparks CD..........2004-06-26

....this should be the one. Why? This recording from The Legends of Acid Jazz series is actually the first two Sparks albums (his eponymous debut and Sparkplug) in their entirety. For my ears, this is one of the high points in the whole genre of acid jazz or soul jazz.
The personnel on these early sides are outstanding. For the first album, Sparks was joined by Leon Spencer on the organ, Virgil Jones on the trumpet, John Manning on the tenor and Idris Muhammad on the drums. Houston Person sits in on Charlie Brown and The Stinker. For the Sparkplug date (Sparks' finest hour), he is again joined by Muhammad and Jones. Reggie Roberts mans the organ chair and a very young Grover Washington Jr. tears it up on the tenor.
The songs on the first date are all covers. All are very well done and several are very enjoyable. Sparks' solo on Thank You is outstanding.
But where this CD takes off is during the second session. From the very start of the Kool and the Gang cover, Who's Gonna Take the Weight to the end of Dig Dis we are in soul jazz heaven. Everybody takes tremendous solos but Sparks is the most exciting. He is one of those players whose solo logic sounds innovative and classic at the same time. It is almost as if you can hear his phrases and hooks becoming clich?s for an army of imitators as the notes come off his guitar. I love the way this guy plays.
This type of music tends to get no respect from most critics. It is demeaned as formulaic, as easy listening, as the type of music that can be used for background music. Frequently soul jazz or acid jazz is exactly that. On the other hand, when in the right hands (e.g., Sparks or Grant Green or Grover Washington) it is also strong medicine for the soul. I have heard that Duke Ellington once said something to the effect that there is only two types of music: good and bad. Another way to say the same thing might be to say that there is only inspired music or the stuff that people are just playing to make a living. Sparks is inspired on these sides and so are his band mates. If you are a Grant Green fan or you like Swiss Movement or Grover or The Jazz Crusaders (especially when they featured Larry Carlton) or some one like Esther Phillips you will love this stuff. This is the one to get.

    5 out of 5 stars No reviews????.......2000-11-21

It's hard to believe no one has reviewed this title yet as it is one of the best of the series. Perhaps that's why, most people just know that it is.

The cover of 'Thank You...' is just great, so is the Kool and The Gang cover of 'Who's Gonna Take...'. Organist Leon Spencer is in a great form, just like drummer Idris Muhammad, trumpter Virgil Jones and the rest of this funky crew. There are only two mellow tunes: 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was' and 'Alone Together'. 'Dig Dis' is an exploratory little song, it's more jazzy than the rest of the CD. The remaining 60min is just straight ahead soul-jazz in the best imaginable way!

Groove Holmes was a "legend of Acid Jazz" and these cuts groove, but the funny thing about it was that his true FUNK stuff was recorded on another label and most of it is out of print. What you hear on this album is a heavy GROOVING Jazz organist, but these aren't the cuts that really demonstrate him kicking the funk - - the stuff where he has the wa wa guitar going behind him, a moog on top of the organ, and is ACTUALLY kicking basslines on a Nova bass unit between ripping lines and chords. The closest you'll get to that on CD is Night Glider and Troboudors of Groove maybe - - but really you have to search high and low for the heavy sh** he was doing in the early '70s. HOWEVER, don't get me wrong... I'm *NOT* trying to dissuade you from getting this album. Noooooooooooo-sir-eee... this may not be a compilation of his grooveadelic slam jams, however, this is a compilation of incredibly slamming Jazz organ grooves, with Groove's trademark of drive, grease and slick licks. Then go out to some used record stores, and look for his out of print stuff on labels like GROOVE MERCHANT etc. You will however, enjoy this album... because GROOVE definitely earned his name !

5 out of 5 stars The Original "Soul Jazz"/Funky Jazz Organ Guitarist.......2001-06-19

Long before Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Melvin Sparks and Cornell Dupree, Billy Butler was the original soul/organ jazz guitarist. He played with virtually every organist under the sun and plenty of other Jazz and R & B legends too - - for a time Billy was the ultimate gun for hire appearing on albums by the likes of Rhaasan Roland Kirk, Houston Person, B.B. King, Freddie King, Little Willie John, Earl Bostic, Jimmy Smith and lot's more, not to mention the Godfather, Wild Bill Davis... This CD includes both his Jazzy, Bluesy and funky side... and boy could he play funky... in fact he was part of James Brown's funky studio band during the KING years in the mid-late '60s... That's him playing on Outta Sight... ! ! ! Anyway, this album features some hip shaking funk and boogaloo cuts (check out that funky steel slide guitar thing he does) as well as Jazz and blues - - many tracks feature the late great Johnny Hammond Smith on organ as well as piano... He proves himself capable of kicking funk as well as doing the "Wes" think quite sweet and beautifully.

Though this is a great CD, if you're really in the mood to hear him get down, check out his 1970 recording SWEET TALK (often listed under the name of BILLIE BUTLER) and you'll really wonder why this versatile groove master's gems have spent so much time hiding in the vaults (even though the thousands of sessions he's done have become very much a part of our lives ! ! !)

5 out of 5 stars Stitt is it.......2007-01-24

The entire Legends of Acid Jazz series has some solid high points. This entry for Sonny Stitt is no different. For fans of this genre of music this represents a good choice.

      4 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2003-01-02

I can't believe that anyone hasn't reviewed this CD yet. Even though it's not a Important Statement (TM) in jazz, it's eminently listenable throughout, with superb efforts from all hands. All of the tracks are 4 stars and better, with "Miss Riverside", "Cry Me a River", "Going to DC", "Aires", and "Black Vibrations" being the particular standouts.

This is a tight, enthusiastic group of musicians, drum, bass, Hammond B3, guitar, trumpet and Stitt playing tenor sax with some alto. All the players except the drummer and bassist have ample opportunities to strut their stuff in extensive solos. Even then the rhythm section is so absolutely outstanding in the way they simultaneously hold the beat like clockwork and highlight what's going on musically you don't need a solo to be blown away by them.

The organist and guitarist are both excellent in their own right, with the organist having a lot of outstanding solo moments as well as being an essential supporting rhythmic element.

The trumpet player on this CD is also a real treat. He consistently puts out a clear mellow full tone that does not falter when he's playing fast, and he always seems to infuse a little syncopation into his playing that enhances the overall effect. I would have to say that his playing is journeyman rather than master level, even though knowing that he's on a record would probably make me feel like I'm in goood hands.

The only thing that really detracts from Stitt's awesome playing is his use of the Gibson Maestro, on the first 5 of the 11 tracks which lends some harshness and nasality to his tone. Even then his playsing and phrasing is so good you can almost ignore it. Indeed in some places you almost can't tell he's got the d___ed thing on. Throughout, Stitt displays virtuosic skills as he brings his bop sensibilities to the world of organ funk with blazing fast keywork, keeping the sense of grooviness essential to such an enterprise. His opening riff in "Miss Riverside" is classic. "Cry Me a River" and "Where is the Love" are ballads Stitt brings great feeling to without going mushy. "Going to DC" has real urgency to it, and "Aires" has a lush, almost big band feel to it.

Imagine you're standing on the sidelines of the hippest party at the hippest scene, filled with the hippest crowd of people. Everyone is feeling great and the music ends. With everyone watching, the host calmly walks up to you and asks you to put on the next CD the keep the party rolling.

You walk past the waiting crowd to the stereo and scan the titles, looking for something to prove you know more than just Classic Rock anthems and Old School funk. What do you do?

You put on this CD. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Funky, bluesy jazz guitar.......2004-08-17

If you like the funky jazz of Grant Green and Lou Donaldson, or the early jazz guitar of George Benson, you will like Joe Jones. He and Melvin Sparks are the primary players of this type of music, and they are both great guitarists. I think Soulive and Rodney Jones also have a similar sound. Anyway, both of the "Legends of Acid Jazz" cd's are great. Get either or both; you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars If you like it funky...! ! !.......2003-06-27

Now that I live in Tokyo, I'm a bit spoiled... you go into a record store, and sitting on the shelf - - well, take just the other day - - I picked up a vinyl reissue of Joe Jones's Boogaloo Joe (the album from which many of these tracks come.) - - For some reason, you just don't find groovy stuff like this on CD/record store shelves back in the states, and its a shame. - - If you're a fan of that late '60s BLUE NOTE/Prestige Funk... and like cats like MELVIN SPARKS and Grant Green's later funk flirtations, this CD is made to order. - - Also a nice treat - - a right on red hot finger popping Bernard Purdie on drums, Sonny Phillips on organ and RUSTY BRYANT (If you ever can get your hands on an album called NIGHT TRAIN NOW, go for it !) - - Calling Joe Jones a legend of acid Jazz may or may not be a hip marketing cliche... but whether it is or isn't, book its probably an understatement. For some reason he is often criticised as underplaying (leaving the work to his sidemen) - - however, a quick listen to "Boogaloo Joe" should pretty much clear up any doubts as to weather or not the guy can get a groove on... Yip, go out and get this one !

          5 out of 5 stars Jazz/Groove Guitar Master.......2001-02-04

Boogaloo Joe Jones along with Grant Green are my favorite soul jazz guitarists. This cd contains the lps "Right On Brother" and "Boogaloo Joe". The groove NEVER ends on this cd. The side men on this smokin' cd include groove jazz masters Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, Sonny Phillips & Bernard Purdie. My favorite tracks include "Boogaloo Joe", and a cover of the Supremes hit "Someday We'll Be Together." If you are a fan of the almighty groove you can't miss this one. The "Legends Of Acid Jazz Vol 2" cd of Boogaloo Joe Jones is equally good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Funk Jazz Guitar.......2000-04-02

Boogaloo Joe Jones is a terrific funk-jazz guitarist whose work tends to be in combos with like minded sax/organ/bass/drummers. Fans of the late-'60s/early '70s Grant Green style will be at home (or is it down home?) here. Fire up the sample from the smoking self-titled cut Boogaloo Joe, & you'll get a good idea of what to expect. Great playing from sideman such as Rusty Bryant (sax) & Idris Muhammed (drums).

5 out of 5 stars Buy this one too.......2004-08-17

If you liked the first "legends of acid jazz" cd, you will like this one as well. They are both great and contain some of Joe Jone's best playing. In my opinion, Boogaloo Joe Jones was the best of the funky jazz guitarists.

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as volume 1.......2001-04-15

Some tracks stronger than others..."I Feel the Earth Move" could have been omitted, for example...contains the albums "No Way" and "What it Is", originally released on Prestige in 1970 and 1971...a young Grover Washington Jr. on tenor sax, Bernard Purdie on drums.

5 out of 5 stars awesome funky jazz!.......2000-09-13

Anyone who likes groovey funky jazz should get this CD. I bought this CD and haven't taken it out of my stereo for weeks! This was the first Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones album I bought but definately not the last. GOOD LISTENING! :-)
