Mixing old and new pop jazzers, A Jazz Noel features a dozen mostly instrumental cuts and a couple vocal tracks. R&B legend Etta James gives "Please Come Home for Christmas" a gritty workout that sounds like an arctic gust, blowing through tunes by comfy mainstream players such as Spyro Gyra, Tom Scott (with singer Maysa), the Braxton Brothers, Hiroshima, Special EFX, Earl Klugh, and others. Vocalist Michael Franks--all but off the radar recently--reprises "Island Christmas" in his singular style while virtuoso Minneapolis sideman, producer, and songwriter Ricky Peterson pens a natty little original with his siblings and friends called "In the City." Radio friendly and taking no risks, this set of standards and catchy, creative, new tunes is rich in polish, professionalism, and predictability, perfect for the person with mainstream tastes. --Martin Keller
From Jazziz

Phantazia...Fantastic!!.......2007-04-29
I picked this up while looking for some Ponty and Geez, what a find!! Wayfaring Stranger is so absolutely delicious. Reminds me of Summertime. Night Song...there are no words. How 'bout that funky Phantazia and Fiddler on the Roof - (which do sound dated, but it's a straight-up 70s groove thang). This is just an all-around CD full of funky, sexy, and creative music and a violin that just won't quit.
Pure Genius!.......2005-07-19
I fell in love with Noel Pointer's haunting music in the 70s through my brother's love for jazz. Noel Pointer was definitely one of the best that the Jazz-Fusion Era offered. I'll never forget the night I met Mr. Pointer backstage at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA (circa 1982). He was playing there with Hiroshima and Phyllis Hyman. What a huge lose to the jazz community. My favorite song will always be "Night Song".
Awesome!.......2004-06-07
I will never forget Noel Pointer. This bad-ass black man doing his thing on the acoustic violin. I fell in love before I heard his music. I followed him around to every concernt he played in the Washington, Dc area and when I heard he had passed away, I went into deep depression. Wayfaring Stranger and Night Song are as haunting and mystical and soothing as heaven itself. Oh, how he is missed. Oh, what he had lived/ I still want to know the facts surrounding his death. Does anyone know? He was so young and so beautiful and so very talented. He is missed!
Check out Night Song.......2003-07-04
I saw Noel Pointer on stage about 20 years ago. What a talent! The cut Night Song blew me away then...it still does.

In my opinion, the best cool jazz album ever produced. A pleasure to listen to time and time again!!

Anyone that doesn't own a Noel Pointer CD.......2004-06-28
Hasn't experienced the true moving of their spirit via a trip through a musical journey! This man is phenomenal, the voice and the violin. I was turned on to Mr. Pointer at an early age. I was all of 17 and thought I knew music and its meaning. Then someone played this CD for me and I fell immediately in fast and furiously in love. Such a shame he left us so early. What a talent!
for hernani c pengson.......2004-01-16
I know of the album you speak: "ALL MY REASONS" BY NOEL POINTER! REALLY REALLY GREAT STUFF...: ST. LOUIS MELODY, VIRGIE, I FEEL YOUR SOUL, ALL MY REASON, BROOKLINE..ETC..
I say all that to say, that album is out of print and will not be released in the US, ever (long story I was told). Anyway, after an exhaustive search, I finally found the CD as an import from Malaysia. It cost me a pretty penny, but it was well worth it. You have to try all the import outlets. If you can't find it...I'll try to help.
..a man of such talent.........2003-07-02
...A great musician..too bad he's gone but I still believe his legacy still lives on..this album is one of my favorite. But hopefully, any recording company should release his CLASSY LADY album. I guess this was his best...Songs like I FEEL YOUR YOUR SOUL, HIGHER THAN HEAVEN, ALL THE REASON WHY, etc. should never be "left behind". Anyone, please inform me of anything where I could get hold of a CD version..thanks!!!!
Outstanding album from a great musician/composer.......2002-07-27
First of all, whatever rocket scientist put "Original Release Date: 1999" needs to proof-read their work a little more - this came out around the mid-70s. Anyway, I remember the first time I saw Noel Pointer.....I was home sick from school and the TV had been left on the Dinah Shore Show (I didn't put it there I swear!). Keeping in mind I was actually sick and it was in the days before TV came w/remotes, I left it there, not caring. He played "Movin In" (still his best tune IMO) and I vowed to get the album based on that tune. Now I'm a big Jean-Luc Ponty fan, but I thought this guy, playing-wise and composition-wise, could give him a run for the money. If you're into Ponty and the like, GET THIS. Frankly I could have lived w/o the "slave ship stuff," but there's a lot of great stuff on here that regardless make it well worth your money.
"STAYING WITH YOU...".......2001-01-30
is what this whole CD will do. This is Noel at his eccletic best. He takes the listener on a journey with this one and you're much richer, musically, because of it. Every cut presents Noel playing with such fullness and grace, you just shake your head at his artistry. You have Noel getting funky on "Hold On." The beauty of "Stardust Lady," which shows off Noel's vocal skills, with a little help from Mom in the background. The emotion he plays with on the "Root's Suite," transporting you in time to the Motherland and putting you on the journey to America via the slave ship. Then he does a playful duet with one of my favorite vocalists, Miss Patti Austin on "Staying with You." Thanks to Noel, my early introduction to classical music came courtesy of the cut "Cappriccio Stravagante." And just think I bought this album for "Movin' In," and Noel's rendition of Stevie's "Superwoman." When I needed to relax, Noel was there, relieving me of the stress too much studying brought on me. Because of this album, (along with "Phantazia," and "Feel It," two other favorite albums by Noel) I got through college. Thanks Noel for sharing your lovely musical vision. A CLASSIC!

Worth buying just to hear Noel Jewkes.......2005-08-14
A fun session with great players -- Hahn, Jack DeJohnette, Mike White, Ron McClure and especially Noel Jewkes. Philip Elwood calls Jewkes one of the very best reed players in the San Francisco Bay Area, and his work here on sax and flute are the real highlights. I know there are relatively unsung musicians all around the world, but players of Jewkes quality should not go unheard.
"hahn-ting".......2001-11-09
As it has been said, "if you rememember the 60's, you weren't really there," but this recording may very well be your entry point! If you do remember and you're tired of the same old, same old Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Ravi Shankar sounds, give this one a try. "In the Breeze" shows off Jerry's bop chops. Certainly not a "desert island disc" but not bad for a "throw-back" event. Break out the herb!

This is DEFINITELY worth a listen!.......2007-01-16
I am a sax player as well as a music teacher and have found this CD to be well worth the money! Not only do you get a wide variety of styles, but you also get to hear one of the rare saxophone orchestras who use uncommon instruments. You can tell that these players have a lot of fun together, which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to as well as teach with. There are slight intonation problems on the occasion, but when you think about all of the things they are doing - I think I'll let that one slide! Don't miss out on this unique and enjoyable group! My personal favorite track is Casbah Shuffle. I hope you enjoy!
DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!.......2005-09-18
What a major disappointment. Has this group ever heard of intonation, vibrato, or articulation? There are several spots on this CD where the "ensemble" is just not even close to being together. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. Don't buy this CD "just to hear the contrabass sax." I have heard better sounds from my lawn mower running over tree branches. The Nuclear Whales should pull this recording off the market to avoid any more embarrassment. I will not buy any more of their recordings, and urge you to do the same. Save your money for gas.
Totally enthralling!.......2000-09-30
If you only have one saxophone ensemble CD, it should be from the Whales. And if you don't like saxophone, buy this anyways--you will still like it. Good music is music that sounds good, right?
This CD starts, appropriately enough, with a fanfare (Fanfare for the Common Man), which makes great use of the soprano lead. The lower voices are gradually layered in, but they don't bring out all the horns until the second track, which rotates the leads among all the players, including Don Stevens on the Contrabass.
To put it mildly, the Contrabass sax is more than a bit unusual, and there are only a few in existence. Stevens' horn was fortuitously discovered in a New Jersey warehouse just before demolition. The difference between a more standard quartet and this orchestra is the addition of 50% more players and additional voices. The Whales always supplemented the standard 4 saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari) with sopranino and bass. Adding the contrabsss makes this pure magic. Nobody can listen to a contrabass sax without cracking a smile.
I'm a sucker for Ellington, so when it is played by a talented group of musicians like this--especially a sax ensemble--its irresistable to me. The Ellington medley is exquisite, with a tearful interpretation of "Come Sunday" immediately followed by a novel rendition of "Caravan."
The contrabass totally rocks on "Casbah Shuffle". That thing just kind of thwops-it is almost percussive, which makes a great effect in conjunction with the tabla (the Indian drum that goes `dweep, dweep, dweep') and tam tam. With a soprano lead, it has a real Don Ellis "Electric Bath" kind of feel. This is fun stuff-I can't imagine anyone not liking this.
No group located in a tree-hugging locale like Santa Cruz, CA would name themselves Nuclear Whales if they didn't have a sense of humor, but a novelty number like "Shuffle" is immediately followed by a completely serious number, "New York City Ghost," which is so haunting it gives me goose bumps. Interestingly, they don't identify the soloists, and I'm not sure which of the 3 soprano-players does the lead in this one. For the most part, they arrange their own stuff, but this one is arranged by Lennie Niehaus.
Back to another upbeat number; "Sweet Georgia Brown" must have been written with the saxophone in mind. This is the thwoppiest chart for the contrabass. It's followed by an original vocal piece by baritonist Ann Merrell called "Mold, Mold" that would be perfect for some of the Louis Jordan-inspired swing bands that were popular a couple years back.
The rest of the album is more of the same, alternating grit, swing & jazz with Richard Strauss and Louis Gottschalk. This group can play anything, and it sounds great.
Much Larger Than Whales!!.......1999-04-07
Folks, this is simply ensemble sax at it's finest! It don't get much better!
Being a lover of Bass Sax, the Contrabass only added more musical jucies to my ears and pulled untold watts from my system!
UNBELIEVABLE arrangements! GENIUS! More genius are the artists! You have no idea what takes as a musician to get to this plateau, and beyond that, get THIS many together as a group and WHALE away!
The NW are the Canadian Brass, only with reeds! And MORE! A MUST if you are an audiophile! If you are a reed player, you already own it. If not, GET IT!
From Dixieland to Classical and everything inbetween, they have it all. The campiness of various tunes exude artististic virtuosity and push the creative envelope!
You MUST hear this on a high end system as I have. Bozak 310-B Concert Masters do very fine with this range of frequences. (28 cycles required--minimum, to hear it all!).
CRANK IT! You will feel things you never felt before! The arrangements are spectacular!!!
A VERY good HIGH quality recording. No limiters or balonery! Just a PURE sound without distortion.
I can't say enough. Simply the best stuff I have heard in YEARS!
I'm in Milwaukee. If you are near or get by here, look me up and HEAR this correctly!
That's how strongly I feel about the Nuclear Whales! Simply a joy and acts as auricle viagra!

Wayward Jazz uses the acoustic guitar to wind its way through classic forms of jazz, from the provocative rhythms of Latin jazz while adding the precision of its Asian counterpart to the heartfelt melodies of Smooth Jazz. If you like Peter White or Marc Antoine it's a good bet you'll like Noel Lorica.
This collection of 11 instrumental works are truly songs without words. The guitar adds a voice filled with texture and emotion. Beginning with his award winning song " Back in Five", which introduces us to Noel Lorica's vibrant, harmonious compositions and superb musicianship. As the album continues, it picks up tempo with body swaying precision in "Samba in A." Then it takes on the familiar "My Favorite Things" with a most astonishing acoustic jazz interpretation. The journey further transports you to the cool Brazilian shores with the sultry melody of "El Viento". Only to be brought back to pure innocence with the solo guitar of title song "First Dance".
At this point, most albums lose passion but "First Dance" only begins to further captivate with skill and soul. Each song in this album has unique character and is worthy of its own accolade. Some diversifying with piano melodies and guitar highlights as in "Forgiveness" & " Scent of Cinnamon". Or "Sarong Bangi" which brings in the swing that standard lovers applaud. While Latin jazz fans will clamor for the strong percussions of "Midnight Dreams" & "Last Dance" Wayward style. Finally ending with the smooth flowing beat of "Warm Winds".
This has got to be one of the best new jazz albums of the year and Noel Lorica's remarkable introduction into the heart of the jazz community. You'll sure to enjoy this little Wayward excursion.

A Hidden Gem!.......2005-11-02
Lorica is a native of Manila, The Philippines and currently resides in South Florida. He's a Classical trained guitarist whose style resembles well established guitarists such as Peter White, Marc Antoine and Earl Klugh. His debut album has much promise. The recording has a variety of jazz rhythms which ventures from Asian to Flamenco to Brazil. His production is high quality and his original compositions are lovely. I personally enjoyed "Samba in 5" as well as "Midnight Dreams". He also holds his own on American standards such as Rogers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things". I see very good things for Lorica happening with this CD release. This is a hidden gem. It's a musical journey you'll enjoy.
An acoustic delight.......2005-07-28
great album...superior guitar playing in the same category as marc antoine, peter white, ken navarro, earl klugh.....seeing Mr.Lorica perform live is very entertaining and impressive...his passion for his instrument is very evident on live performances and is captured well into this cd
wonderful acoustic guitar cd.......2005-07-28
His style is a cross between Marc Antoine and Peter White with a slight more edge to it....I was very impressed with "Back to 5,Midnight dreams, and Last Dance" but the rest of the album is definitely a pure delight to your musical senses. For all those Antoine and White Fans this is an album worth your time...
Exceptional Debut Album.......2005-06-19
After seeing Noel perform live in Orlando and South Florida, I was excited to see his first CD hit the market. I was not disappointed!
The CD is a blend of mostly original samba/latin and smooth jazz . The samba and latin oriented songs were the highlights of the CD. If you like Bossa Nova (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bossa_nova), this CD most definitely has tracks that you will love.
While I liked the CD as a whole, here are the tracks that are my favorites:
Track 1 -- Back in 5
Track 2 -- Samba in A
Track 4 -- El Viento
Track 5 -- First Dance
Track 6 -- Midnight Dreams
Track 8 -- Sarong Bangi
Track 9 -- Last Dance
Track 11 -- Warm Winds
If you are looking to discover a new instrumentalist/song writer I recommend you try this CD.
