Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez presents himself as a formidable improviser on his debut album. The classically trained Perez worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Paquito d'Rivera before setting out on his own, and his groundings in bop harmonic invention and his rhythmic nuances of salsa are evident here. Perez offers a dazzling program of originals, standards, and vintage Cuban salsa. Perez is surrounded by quality sidemen including Santi Debriano on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Joe Lovano and David Sanchez on tenor and soprano saxophones and vocalist Ruben Blades, who gives outstanding performances on the American standard "Skylark" and the classic Latin bolero "Solo Contigo Basta." --John Swenson

awesome cd.......2007-01-18
This guy knows how to play piano. He right up there with some of the best pianoest David Benoit, Bob James to name a few. Id buy this cd if I were you & the next two after this one.George
Fine Monk playing.......2006-03-16
Almost all modern jazz pianists play Monk, whose tunes are their Well-Tempered Clavier. However, this album, the first, I believe, by Danilo Perez, is exceptionally spirited and non-perfunctory. Perez performs the always-challenging trick of being faithful to the original sense of these highly idiosyncratic tunes, and yet injects his own individual sense of time, blues, and Pan-American sensibility. I have found almost all of Perez' recordings after this disappointing by comparison, which is too bad. I don't really understand why. But this is highly recommended.
awesome album.......2005-06-30
one of my favorite albums from the young jazz players out there i will put danilo up there with joshua redman and cristian macbride... i also got the journey and motherland albums wich are good albums but not great albums to me... anyway problably is my loving for thelonious monk what makes me surrender to this one... listen to it, bright mississippi and hot been strut are the best pieces on it... hope you enjoy listening.. its got great solo from danilo, he was playing with mc bride on bass and they hook up on this one for good...
For listening or thinking, a great performance.......2001-08-10
I love this CD and enjoy it both as background music and as music to think about. Even better, my toddler loves this and already says jazz is her favorite kind of music!
Danilo Perez turns makes all other Jazz make sense........1999-10-27
Danilo makes the complicated and sometimes difficult ideas in modern jazz simple enough for to swallow. He literally tears down all the boundaries set for piano, as well as the rest of the rhythm section. This album is the simply the best compliment that the great Monk couldv'e been paid.

From his work with Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis to his pioneering recordings including The Journey and PanaMonk, Panamanian pianist-composer Danilo Perez has evolved into one of the most complete musicians of his generation. This monumental CD is his most intricate and engaging to date. Perez's approach to the African musical imprint in the Americas, with its U.S., Caribbean, Central American, and South American branches, is the aural equivalent of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel steeped in the magical realisms of the Americas.
In Perez's hands, national rhythms blend with jazz, folkloric, and classical musical forms and merge with his encyclopedic keyboard conception on acoustic and electric piano. He's backed by an all-world array of musicians including soprano and alto saxophonist Chris Potter, violinist Regina Carter, drummer Brian Blade, and bassist John Patitucci from the U.S.; trumpeter Diego Urcola from Argentina; and singer Claudia Acuna from Chile. Perez takes the listener on a tour: from the Latin blues of "Suite for the Americas, Parts 1 and 2," and Richard Bona's funky Afro-Brazilian basslines on "Pan Africa" to the choral, Cuban complexity of "Overture." The highlights of the CD are Perez's updates of "Panama Libre" and "Panama 2000" from his self-titled debut and The Journey. They show off his arranging genius, and highlight his new role as the Cultural Ambassador of Panama. --Eugene Holley Jr.

The new path.......2001-01-13
Motherland is a clear indication that jazz is about to change its path. Danilo Perez is quickly becoming the MIles Davis of this decade. As a fusion master, Danilo Perez has pushed the limits of jazz to new realms ; refreshening, intense but delicate, this album may become a landmark as to the direction jazz music will go from now on. I agree 100% with The new York Times Critic's choice as No.1 pick of the year 2000. On the other hand, the recent nomination to the Grammys on the Latin Jazz Category indicates that the Academy is not yet prepared to recognized this talented panamanian as master pianist/composer/arranger in the jazz genre ( without adjectives) . Its to hard to accept, coming from a latino, that he speaks the jazz language more fluently that most jazz pianists in the world.
Watch for more to come from Danilo Perez in the near future.
The new Trend in Jazz/ A panamanian conquistador.......2001-01-10
With Motherland ,Danilo Perez proves one more time that jazz is the perfect ground for planting the universal or world music seed. He is a master of fusion that deserves wider recognition. I was glad to see Motherland as the year 2000 No.1 pick of The New York Times critic's choice ; it's a well deserve award. Also, Motherlands'nomination for the Grammys in the Latin Jazz category shows that the music academy is facing a big dilema "clasifying" this Latino that somehow speaks the true American Jazz language more fluently than most pianists in the world. We'll they ever be brave enough to nominate him in the Jazz Category, without adjectives? this is not Latin Jazz, is music at its best.
His best so far.......2000-10-31
Motherland is Danilo Perez's best. He just seems to improve with every album. I thought he'd reached his zenith after his release of The Journey, then after Panamonk, then after Central Avenue. I'm happy to be wrong, yet again. As a panamanian, this record (and in fact all his records) strike a particular nationalistic vein. In this album, "Elegant Dance" was easy to recognize as a "punto", a popular dance back home. All his rhythms, techniques, improvisations, just scream "Latin". But they're also a universal code, accessible to anyone, from any nationality.
Personal Synthesis.......2000-09-22
Along the lines of Keith Jarrett's "Expectations" and Wayne Shorter albums like "Native Dancer", Danilo's latest is a sincere, personal synthesis of influences and experiences that crosses all genres. There need to be more albums like this that, instead of sticking stubbornly to one genre or jumping frantically among many, reflects Shorter's one-time definition of jazz: "no genre."

It may sound like a platitude, but if Roy Haynes is on the date, you can almost be sure the album is a winner. From his classic 1962 album, Out of the Afternoon, to 1998's diverse Praise, Haynes has set touchstones that most jazz musicians can only aspire to. His drumming remains remarkably contemporary, consistent, virtuosic, and forward-thinking. A bristling snap permeates this all-standards outing with pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci. Recorded both in the studio and live at Scullers in Boston, Haynes (with Perez's exceptionally elastic commentary) is in constant conversation--juggling the time, dancing with the beat, creating rhythmic waves when needed, or simply playing graceful, immaculate swing time. Bud Powell's "Wail," Pat Metheny's "Question and Answer," Miles Davis's "Sippin at Bells," Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys," and a chunky Latin take on Chick Corea's "Folk Song" are a few of the high points. Another is Rodgers & Hart's "It's Easy to Remember," which features Haynes on brushes, a nearly lost drumming art here performed masterfully. Around Perez's generous reading, Haynes creates atmospheric density and majestic riffing with slaps, stabs, smoky accents, and space. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Music.......2005-03-24
This is a CD worth having in my collection. For my taste this is the best piano playing I have heard by the Panamanian Danilo Perez. This group is tight and grounded. I wish Danilo had continued in this direction. The only problem is the drum playing of Roy Haynes that becomes to up-front some times, I prefer more subtle and background drum playing. John Pattituchi's playing fits also very well with this group. A very nice trio.
Can't go wrong with Sir Haynes.......2003-05-03
My introduction to Roy came with Pat Metheny's trio record _Question and Answer_. I was immediately taken with his drumming on that record, and knew I had to seek out some more. This one gathered dust on my Wish List for way too long before I finally got around to picking it up, which is too bad. Here, the incredible dynamic tension of Roy's drumming is matched up with the Latin-tinged piano stylings of Danilo Perez, and virtuoso bass god John Patitucci. The results are absolutely ELECTRIC.
Part of what's great about this CD is that the songs represent kind of a sampling of the different artists Roy has played with over the years, starting with Bud Powell, through Birth of the Cool era Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn and Chick Corea, to name a few. Roy has played with just about everybody, and at 70+ years, he's still tearing it up with the best of them.
I just have to shake my head in disbelief at the review a few reviews down that calls this album "really boring", because that's precisely the LAST thing I would call it. Just the playing itself is utterly fantastic, and the arrangements are very exciting too. Perez's interpretations of Monk tunes are particularly invigorating. What jazz pianist, no matter what persuasion, hasn't covered Monk tunes, if not done an entire tribute album to him? These guys know their roots and pay tribute to them with energy, vigor, and incomparable musicianship. You just can't pass up this CD.
ROY GOT CHOPS.......2001-05-08
I went to Borders and listened to this cd for 2hrs.My favorite tune is "QUESTION & ANSWER",listen to the interaction of this trio, for sheer eartainment,Roy buils a calvacde of sound with his drum kit,I use this tune as part of workout regiemn.Roy is a plus+70 cat ,that has not lost his"BRUSH stroke.Energy is what a master musician gives to the players and to the listerner. This cd is "Fresh".
Snap, crackle, pop.......2000-08-29
This music has a lot of historical depth, reflecting Roy Haynes' long career and multiple associations. There are songs dedicated to (or written by) Sarah Vaughn, Chick Corea, Thelonius Monk... The drums are front and center: I love Haynes' popping snare drum sound and his unusual rhythmic conceptions. Perhaps if I weren't a drummer I would have given the album 4 stars instead of 5, but as it is I have to give it its due.
Wow! (For the most part, anyway).......2000-08-19
Having had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Haynes live and on disc in several different contexts, both as leader and sideman, I have developed quite a love for his music over the years. He has the unique ability to push the music to new heights while not drowning out the contribution of his fellow musicians. So natuarally I was looking forward to this release.I was not disappointed.Danilo Perez, who brings a wonderful, unique latin flavor to his playing, seems to be genuinely at ease with the music while still being quite creative. Plus, he is just very fun to listen to!John Patitucci is a bass player whos career I have been following ever since his days in the group Tamarac. His stint with Chick Corea, though, really brought attention to his very solid playing.Mr. Haynes, of course is electrifying. Playing rhythems and counter rhythems which would cause most other drummers nightmares, are totally second nature to him. After all, he has been doing this for over fifty years. In the end, though, all this great talent would mean nothing without good tunes for them to create on. On this cd that means a selection of tried and true standards, with a few more recent works added in for good measure. The first half of the album consists of studio recordings while the second deals with live cuts from a stint at Scullers.Personaly, I prefer the live tunes. The band has a tendency to cut loose a lttle more and take a few more chances. This, as is often the case, brings the excitment level up a few notches. All in all, you can't really go wrong with this cd. Do yourself a favor: pick this one up, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and prepare to be delighted!

A masterpiece from a great talent.......2004-01-20
Danilo Perez is a core contributor to the great jazz of our time. I first saw him in NY in the mid 90s interpreting Monk (Panamonk). Clearly a player to watch. The attention was rewarded as Danilo released three consecutive amazing albums: Central Avenue, Mother Land, and his latest Till Then. Central Avenue primarily draws inspiration for the music of his native Panama/Caribean. The last two albums while retaining the Latin heart, represent continued exploration and growth. Danilo says Mother Land was inspired by working with Wayne Shorter (Love Alegria, don't care for Footprints). These albums are rhythmically and melodically rich and interesting. The musical ideas are as compelling as the technique. It takes a couple of listens to understand some of the cuts, and you still find new moments after multiple listenings.
Till Then is a great album.
Uninspiring jazz from a major talent.......2003-11-13
Being a fan of jazz music from the hard-bop era I am always on the look out for new exciting talent. I have been following the musical progression of Danilo and although Central Ave was his latest and in my mind his best, he really has not produced a truly satisfying album throughout. This will come as Danilo develops his sound. I must say that Till Then is a major step back for Danilo. This is a very safe and fully unadventurous album. If you are a fan of the Pat Methany Group from the 80s or "smooth" jazz this will appeal. However if you are hoping to revitalize your jazz collection with some inspiring (cuban) jazz piano stick with Chucho Valdes or McCoy Tyner. Most listeners will realize that there is nothing new or interesting here by the third track. A major disappointment from a major talent.
I love this man's music but....................2003-10-30
I first heard of Danilo Perez by a search mistake on amazon and thought he look s like a good chap brought the album "motherland" best discovery Ive made since I came across paco de lucia, I bought "till then" after motherland hoping for a continuation of the vocals on featured on motherland it which really set the album apart from any thing ive heard before, its all good but those motherland vocals surpass this for me. mind you its all still danilo...
When jazz becomes effortless . . ........2003-08-19
. . . as it does on this CD, you get perhaps the finest musical experience possible in this lifetime.
It's been a long journey for Danilo Perez, from his native Panama, through associations with Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Wayne Shorter, through his own brilliant recordings, PanaMonk, Central Avenue, and Motherland. It just goes to show that you only benefit by placing yourself among the very best players.
This disc is hands down his finest. There's a maturity of concept and execution that, although often present on his previous recordings, never sustained itself so fully as it does here. The grooves (well, information bits, in this digital age) fairly ooze confidence and élan. Bassist Pattitucci and the leader, esp., seem to have developed an uncanny empathy over the years. And Brian Blade seems perfect for the drum chair. An extremely subtle player, yet with monster chops, he provides taste, coloration, and propulsion in equal amounts, always complementary, never stealing the show.
Thankfully, Perez seems beyond the phase many young players find themselves mired in, where demonstrating one's prodigious chops is almost as important as musicality. Perez has nothing to prove. So instead of indulging in gratuitous pianistic virtuosity, he rather constructs the most beguiling solos and comping, relying on his inherent yet finely honed instincts to craft stunning soundscapes.
But what most sets this disc apart from others by young lions is its sheer, drop-dead beauty. Certainly it is not too much to say this is one of the most gorgeous recordings ever to come out of the jazz world. Yet nothing is sacrificed in terms of a genuine jazz sensibility. Subtly augmented by plaintive vocals courtesy of rising star Liz Wright on two cuts, plus the haunting soprano sax of Donny McCaslin (a somewhat neglected player) on several others, and the percussive stylings of Adam Cruz, this disc achieves a balance between delicacy and power often striven for in jazz but seldom achieved. A small but perfect example is the soprano sax/steel pan unison lines near the end of "Vera Cruz," the Milton Nascimento masterpiece, that closes things out. Yes, it's a subtle passage, but one perfectly conceived and realized, the kind of thing that's everywhere present on this disc and which vaults it into some kind of ur-jazz territory seldom if ever approached even by its finest practitioners in their most rarified moments.
Moreover, everything is so lightly worn as to appear practically inevitable: No untoward strivings, no whiff of laboring during the wee hours over scores and arrangements, no empty flash. Just line after beautiful line of glorious musical conversation occurring at the very highest levels.
A disc like this comes along once a decade, if that--maybe once a lifetime. By all means, don't miss it.

Panama City's Central Avenue--the major street in pianist Danilo Perez's hometown, with its Hispanic, Middle Eastern, West Indian and American population--provides the perfect multicultural metaphor for this amazing recording, which also includes drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts; bassists John Benitez and John Patitucci; tabla player Ray Spiegel; vocalist Luciana Souza; and percussionists Pernell Saturnino and Miguel "Anga" Diaz.
With his Afro-American/classically-trained pianisms, Perez does what his mentor, Dizzy Gillespie, did: He uses jazz and Afro-Latin rhythms to explore the world. He moves from the east Indian/Arabic tinges of "Blues for the Saints" and "Impromptu (Conversations)"; to the sly, Argentine/Afro-Amerindian chacarera rhythms on Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life"; and lands on the Cuban shore to the ancestral anthems of the guaguanco/abakua ritual drumming on John Coltrane's "Impressions," with Sousa's airy, wordless vocals.
Perez's love of Thelonious Monk is most evident on the slow, stealth-like melody of "Love in Five." On "Panama Blues," he swings an inventive jazz arrangement on an old folk melody rendered by Panamanian country singer Raul Vital, with Aquiles Baez on the cuatro; this arrangement showcases this pianist's ever-expanding and boundary- busting imagination. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

brilliant conception.......1999-09-18
Danilo Perez has put together an album with depth and daring that makes him one of the most promising jazz musicians of his time. His compositions are strong in originality and execution. He is certainly the one to watch as the Marsalis crowd seems stuck in the past.
The Journey's Afro-Latin Compositions Offer a Rhythmic Feast.......1998-07-11
Though some of Perez's solos on this CD bear similarity to his devious playing on Panamonk, this collection is quite different. The Journey couples Perez's improvisation skills with his talents as a composer/arranger for a mid-sized ensemble. The results are delightful. In addition to Perez's heavily-rhythmic playing, the album boasts some really fine solos by David Sanchez. And while the appeal of this album may not be as instantaneous as much of the work on Panamonk, for me The Journey weathers better. It's a rare combination of beauty and intensity.
