When Ron Holloway solos on this album, he's not merely running through a different scale with each chord change; he's constructing new melodies as vibrant as the main theme even as they provide a harmonic echo to that theme. Listen to him take Duke Ellington's "Caravan" or Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" and forego speed and flash to rework those famous themes into new lines nearly as memorable. And on the ballad standards, "I Thought About You" and "My One and Only Love," listen to how he holds a single note and makes it breathe with a lover's hopes and sighs. Holloway also included three strong originals among the eight standards. Unfortunately, he didn't include any explicit references to his long R&B background (he has played with Root Boy Slim, Deanna Bogart and Dr. John as well as Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins). --Geoffrey Himes

Could not be any better.......2007-05-21
All I can say about this CD is that it is an incredible value. You get one of the best albums of the 90's(Slanted and Enchanted), one of the best EP's of the 90's (Watery, Domestic), a short but highly energetic great sounding live show, and a bunch of outakes........However if you have not heard tracks 20-23 on disc 1, you have not heard lofi Indie. These 4 tracks define lofi at it's best. If I could only have 5 albums on the proverbeal dessert island this would be one of them. AND IT'S ONLY 9.99!! Amazing!!!
What is there to say about Pavement?.......2007-04-18
Pavement represents for most what "indie" rock sounds like: witty, ironic, clever pop songs wrapped in guitar noise. Steve Malkmus created some very catchy tunes like the lead song off the album (it has a killer bass-line!). The guitar noise squelches are very good and are on par with those of the Jesus and Mary Chain. To me, Pavement, on this album, sounds like a poppier and funnier version of the Jesus and Mary Chain.
A truly great album is both innovative and stands the test of time (at the time of this review it is nearly 15 years). While I doubt that this album was truly innovative (see Psychocandy and White Light/ White Heat) it did spark a revolution in the world of indie rock, much like REM's Murmer album in the early 1980s.
To fans of noisy pop music, like myself, this album is wonderful. Pavement may have made better albums (see Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain) but this album is great and stands up to the test of time almost perfectly (this record smells of the 1990s but maybe that isn't that bad). Don't let this record's faint aura of indie-rock-hipster "greater than thou" elitism get in the way of your listening pleasure. I highly recommend this recording from Pavement.
Crucial Indie.......2007-01-28
Quite possible the best indie albums you'll ever come across (not to mention that fact that your getting two crucial fresh albums for the price of one.) I stumbled upon this a few years ago at the suggestion of a friend: no media hype influence what so ever. With me some songs jump out at you and some grow on you over time. Summer babe, here, and in the mouth of a desert are some of their 'hits' while trigger cut, two states, perfume v, fame throwa, our singer, mecy snack, my first mine, baptist blacktick, my first mine, nothing ever happens, kentucky cocktail, secret knowledge, frontwards, and so stark all have a carisma to them (alot of which are pop songs in their own goofy and/or sophisticated way) that make this album worth buying twice. It's not a masterpiece in the way it's compiled and transitions from song to song, but, there are so many substantially effective and well developed songs here that stand strong on their own. There's more melodies and stoner rock than you can shake a stick at. You can definitely pick up on pavementisms that weezer later incorporated into their sound. There's a good chance that these songs will grow on you. If not you can just pick up weezer's blue album and enjoy the corporate driven commercial version of pavement.
side note: other than westing these are the only pavement songs with predominant lofi punk influece (IE the fall)

I'm not sure how retroactively Pavement's status as definitive indie rock band of the 90s has been awarded but it seems like they became a much bigger deal after they broke up than they ever were when they were together. This debut album could hold it's own against the albums Unrest and Sebadoh released around the same time, but Dinosaur Jr, Yo La Tengo, Buffalo Tom, Sonic Youth, Swervedriver, Superchunk and Archers Of Loaf were making similar more substancial albums. This could be a worthwhile doucment of how ramshackle indie rock can get while still being tuneful some of the time, but it's not a genre landmark or a satisfying listen from start to finish which most fans even seem to admit.

Amazon.com essential recording
Two smart young college guys with a bunch of catchy, cryptic songs and a taste for peculiar sonics go into a studio with a showboating older drummer and come out with one of the definitive indie-rock albums. Beneath its coils of raw distortion and screaming-for-the-hell-of-it, Pavement's first full-length disc gets over on the strength of stellar songwriting and ingenious melodicism. Sometimes Steve Malkmus's sly, evocative word-games reveal genuine emotion ("Here"), and sometimes they just pay tribute to his favorite bands ("Conduit For Sale!" is a nod to the Fall), but these songs are unconventional in a way that set the convention for bands that came after them. --Douglas Wolk

The spirit of the age.......2007-05-29
When I first listened to this album back in '92 I really wasn't convinced. My initial thought was "These guys aren't trying very hard." But after repeated listens Slanted & Enchanted started to really grow on me. Its not recorded well, the guitars are sometimes out of tune, the playing isn't all that competent and Steve Malkmus' disaffected and sometimes whiny voice is an aquired taste. So why did I keep playing it? Sometimes spirit and originality trumps a band's technical limitations. The ideas are fresh, and they have a personal take on rock music unlike any other band. I don't love this record (tho I do like it). For me Pavement improved with age but Slanted And Enchanted has a special slacker charm all it's own. It really didn't sound like much else around at the time yet somehow encapsulated a certain feeling that was in the air during the early '90s.
HOW TRYING! HOW TRYING! HOW TRYING!.......2007-04-20
I really wanted to hang with the cool kids on this but I just don't get it. Although I think the drummer works very hard to save this mess and it's really adorable the way they rip-off the Jim Croce melody in "Trigger Cut", I just can't jump on this band's wagon.
After several attempts to grasp it, I've concluded that it's just out of my reach. Even standing on my tip-toes, with head tilted, and eyes squinted I fail to see the slightest blur of redeeming quality in this offering.
It's a shame too, because I love abrasive, rebellious noise but I guess at the end of the day I want a little tunefulness in my dissonance.
I have to be honest...I will always reach for Lou Reed, or Sonic Youth before I ever put this on again.
cooler than the other side of the pillow.......2007-01-26
Yes, the guitars are out of tune, the lyrics make no sense. Yes, it's 2007 and we're still arguing about it -- we're still making sense of it. Yes, it will take over your life if you let it. It took over mine.
how could you say that this album is unlistenable?.......2007-01-05
i loved Slanted and Enchanted from the first time i put it on. it is the perfect embodiment of a lackadaisical, slightly depressed, slacker-stoner, too-intelligent-for-the-suburban-teenage-existence, existence. When that guy at the top said that Slanted and Enchanted is like a pair of beat-up converse in a world of running shoes with arch support, he hit the nail right on the head.
Some unforgettable songs, a few duds, but a must-have.......2006-04-26
Ok, let's settle down, reviewers. Pavement was just a band, they weren't out to revolutionize life as we know it. Anyway, this was their first effort and it was admittedly experimental, so just relax and take the best but leave the rest. It's an important record because when they put this together, they didn't realize just what a work of art it was. There's no self-consciousness here. There's also no wall-of-sound or fake punk posturing. Most importantly, you can tell they really were having a good time and the lyrical and melodic hooks grow on you.
Like Iggy Pop, the Stones, Joy Division/New Order and every other seminal band, there are going to be a few duds. Get the hell over it. Meanwhile, there are several really choice tunes here that stand out as early examples of the whole "slacker" vibe. Catchy guitar interplay and clever lyricism, played with a slightly lackadaisical style that is nevertheless FOCUSED. Most of the songs do grow on you and stick in your mind. A couple songs just didn't work, but let's give the fellows credit. It was a breakthrough indeed, and I'm not just saying that because "I need to trot out an American band to compete with Europe's superior bands" (to paraphrase one of the negative reviews). That's silly. Buy it.

Refreshing Surprise..........2006-11-11
The music draws from a wide range of rock tastes, and the vocals stand out amidst the creative instrumentation. Take the best of what's available for Christian rock and give the music an edge that's missing from most everything out there, and you have this awesome album. Solid 5 stars!
Awesome debut album!.......2006-08-20
Alone is my favorite song but you'll listen and enjoy this cd the whole way through. Worth the buy!!!
Great!.......2006-08-18
This is a great album!! I heard it while in a bookstore and asked who was playing. Bought it immediately. Every song is wonderful... I've listened to it several times already. Caleb is such a talent. I can't wait for his next album! Haven't heard it played much yet on Christian radio which is a shame. Seems like it hasn't gotten much exposure yet.
