In the excellent liner notes to this collection (previously available on the Black Lion label), Alun Morgan quotes Monk authority Max Harrison, who wrote, "Thelonious Monk works so exclusively with the basic materials of jazz that, in the best moments, his playing almost becomes a working definition of that music." After a few spins of this gorgeous recording, culled from Monk's last studio session in 1971, one must wonder why Harrison's statement equivocates by using the word almost. This solo outing (given an impeccable, 24-bit remastering job, by the way) presents some of Monk's best-known tunes--"Trinkle, Trinkle," Crepuscule with Nellie," "Blue Sphere"--which are given a reworking that's both sentimental and very stirring. Also included are tracks that Monk rarely recorded, such as wistful reading of "My Melancholy Baby" and an introspective "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland." Aside from the magnificent performance and the sterling recording quality, the most powerful element of this recording is Monk's shiver-inducing ability to reinvent, recompose, and innovate--which is front and center here. Highly recommended. --S. Duda

The drawback to this comprehensive feast of prime Vladimir Horowitz is EMI's overzealous noise reduction, which smoothes the edges off of the great pianist's unique sonority. This is less bothersome in the 1951 sessions, which produced two delicious Scarlatti Sonatas not reissued elsewhere. The high-voltage Horowitz of the thirties was a more direct, less mannered artist than his older self. But his classic Liszt Sonata, Chopin Fourth Scherzo, and other solo EMI jewels are best heard via APR's superior (albeit more expensive) transfers. This erratic but exciting Rach 3 (with cuts, and a momentary third movement memory lapse) still awaits a CD transfer to match that of a bygone Seraphim LP. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:

Backhaus was among the giants of 20th-century keyboard artists, renowned for his solid--some would say stolid--Beethoven and Brahms interpretations. The younger Backhaus was a more overtly virtuosic pianist with a wide repertory. This invaluable Pearl set covers his British recordings, starting in 1908 when he was only 24, and it includes composers and works he abandoned in later years when he pared his programs down to essential masterworks. So we get his only recordings of Rachmaninoff, whom he admired as the greatest among living piano composers, along with Bach, Scarlatti, and others. Backhaus's dazzling virtuosity can be heard in his abridged Brahms Paganini Variations, the Liszt, La Campanella, with its marvelously even runs, and the Weber, Perpetuum Mobile, with precise articulation at fast speeds, among many other examples. Some of his early electrical recordings fill out disc two, sounding fresher than most of the acoustics. Seth Winner's transfers on both well-filled discs are uniformly fine. Collectors of historical recordings will want these rarities. --Dan Davis
