Customer Reviews:
Must be heard to be believed.......2006-04-09
Even the brilliant Judy Kaye in the recent play "Souvenir" about Ms. Jenkins couldn't quite match the unique sound of this singer, although she came close. For those who like this sort of thing, this is the real thing. The sound on this Naxos CD is superior to RCA's "Glory of the Human Voice??" which covers most of the same territory. The Naxos CD also restores the piano intro to the Bell Song and the heretofore rare Valse Caressante of which only a few pressings are known to exist.
That said, the rest of the (non-Florence) cuts are mostly forgettable. More kitch than camp. Annoying music abounds but the in the realm of the truly, stupendously awful Florence Foster Jenkins remains in a class by herself. No one can really compete with Ms. Jenkins on her own camp grounds and there is no sense in trying. The one exception being the sung "Blue Danube" with Josephine Tumminia and the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra which falls in the "what could they have been thinking?" department.
Personally a little of this sort of thing goes a long way. The Faust Travesty on the RCA set holds a bit more interest (but not all that much). I think a more interesting compliation would consist of "straight" renderings of the various arias and pieces contrasted with Madame Florence's so the listener may fully savor what she achieves in these performances.
Florence gets five stars but the rest of it gets a minus one, so it ends up with four.
This is the definitive FFJ!.......2005-01-09
A fellow reviewer has not paid close attention to the contents of "Murder On The High C's": this release actually contains every recording that FFJ made. She recorded 9 arias and released them on 5 78's (the fifth, "Valse Caressante", was split), all of them gathered here for the first time. What this album omits from the previous cd release ("The Glory??? of the Human Voice") is the arias by an almost equally incompetent baritone. "Murder..." more than compensates for this with the inclusion of some unbelievably tragic recordings by artists who could actually sing but found themselves saddled with shockingly bad material; it's an absolute feast for those who love outsider music. The 'nursery rhyme' songs provoke bewilderment, the swing version of "Blue Danube" must be heard to be believed, and the excellent liner notes accurately describe Lauritz Melchior's valiant performance of "Please Don't Say No" as "the single worst recording of anything ever made by an opera star who should have known better". "Murder On The High C's" is an insanely delirious treasure.
Sounds Like A Vacuum Cleaner Ingesting An Owl.......2004-10-15
Florence Foster Jenkins was a socialite who enjoyed singing in vast disproportion to her musical talent. This CD has some of her greatest works (so to speak) although the disc pales in comparison to her masterwork "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." (In fact several of the songs on this CD are available on that recording.) Particularly ear-shattering are "Musical Snuff Box" (watch out for that last note if you have pets, they will seriously dislike it), "Bell Song" which is essentially a series of a cappella pentatonic scales by and large, and finally the unique rendition of "Valse Caressante" (which was actually released as a single!) which will leave any listener in a near delirium.
In short, these rare Jenkins masterworks are amazing and hilarious. I can't recommend them highly enough to anyone even mildly curious about outsider music. Why the three star rating? It is certainly not due to Florence's participation, rather due to the packaging. The cover boasts "Florence Foster Jenkins and Friends." Little will most people suspect that the "friends" make up about half of the CD, and are totally unrelated to Jenkins except for possessing no musical talent. Some of the songs are merely boring (like the Jimmy Durante selections), and some are quite laughably funny like the dreadful "The Fireman's Bride," and "Please Don't Say No." Finally there is the real puzzler from the "what were they thinking?" file, "Little Jack Horner," an operatic retelling of the classic children's tale. The other reason I only give this disc three stars is because four of the nine Jenkins' songs are available on "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." I had expected different material on this CD.
The bottom line is that this CD is for Florence Foster Jenkins completists. (Ponder that.) People who want more exposure to Florence should buy her delightful "The Glory (????) of Human Voice," which I can't recommend highly enough.
comedy classic.......2004-05-27
In the summer of 2003, I had the luck of hearing Florence's recordings. Even though no one is quite sure whether she meant to be funny or not, listening to her cds always puts me in the best mood. Hearing her try to reach those high notes and missing terribly is the funniest thing in the world!! My family and I love Florence!!!
The "joke", never funny, is now painfully shabby.......2004-03-07
It is sad that a person who apparently had too much money and time to waste could have done so in preserving for an unsuspecting posterity such awful sounds. The so-called friends who flocked by invitation to her concert to relish an event of mockery were at least as much to blame as the poor woman herself for having encouraged such eccentric egocentricity.
The whole matter stinks of making fun of a person afflicted by illness. What a cruel species we were - and still are.

True Tribute.......2007-03-11
It may seem odd to honor a SoCal punk band like the Offspring with a string tribute, but i can't see a better way to pay tribute than with a genre so wildly different and unthinkable. The fact that string tribute actually works demonstrates the strength of their compositions and owes a lot to the masterful music arrangement and production. Music is about ever evolving ideas and genre bending, and musicians are supposed to take one another's music and challenge our preconceived notions. I especially recommend tracks 2 - The Kids Aren't Alright, 6 - Self Esteem and 8 - Want you Bad. The original composition - Off String, does a beautiful job of capturing the spirit the music and definitely holds its own against the other tracks. This is a must have for the true Offspring fan as well as anyone else looking for an irreverent take on this genre.
Too Literal.......2006-02-08
The string quartet tribute to these Offspring songs are, in my opinion, a bit too literal. They try too hard to stick - strictly - to the original song and sometimes it produces awkward sounding music. For example, I think the best piece on this CD is the original song composed by the group performing in this CD. In a sense this is less a tribute than a translation, and the Offspring did just fine with their original instruments. Offspring fans might enjoy this CD, but I would reccomend any string quartet tribute - done by Todd Mark Rubenstein and David Davidson - to your other favorite band.
Think Metallica -> Apocalyptica.......2005-11-27
If you were to take an accoustic version of the featured Offspring songs, then have Apocalyptica cover them, this is probably what you would get.
This isn't a disk *by* the Offspring, it's a string tribute to them. It's good for when you want some Offspring, but in a relaxing background form. The music is wonderfully arranged for the most part, with a few sparse moments not quit living up to what I think they could have. Overall, if you can pick this up for a decent price, it is definitely a must-have for a true Offspring fan who can appreciate music that's a little on the classical side.
IT SUCKS ASS.......2005-08-25
i hate it i hate it i hate it
its dumb, it sucks, and its embarassing.
This is an utter disgrace to my favorite band. How can you POSSIBLY compare orchestra to THE OFFSPRING???? Plus, the orchestra sucks. Want some offspring? buy a REAL cd!

Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2004-12-15
I've been a fan of Brian Jackson and more specifically Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson since purchasing on a chance 'From South Africa to South Carolina' as a 15 year old soul/jazz funk fanatic some 25 years ago. I've always felt Gil's work, at least musically, never quite reached the heights of the halcyon days achieved with his key collaborator. Along with the Last Poets, Watts Prophets, Nikki Giovanni and lesser known political poets of the Black Power era (I will avoid the disparaging term 'proto-rappers'), these two musical pioneers very much re-wrote the musical landscape, with their hard-hitting reality prose/song alerting us that America still had(s) some considerable way to go in delivering socio-economic and political justice to its Black populace.
I picked up this album after hearing 'Parellel Lean/Home is Where the Hatred Is' on London's Jazz Fm, which just left me totally mesmerised. Not only does it improve upon the original, with Gil's haunting monologue at the start taking the listener on a drug-laden journey of urban despair, but there's also a sad poignancy empahasised by his own well-documented battle with substance abuse.
As a long-term fan, I've got to say that hearing these two highly gifted talents re-uniting after over 20 years, if regretfully for only one track, is enough to justify purchase of 'Gottta Play'. While 'Parellel Lean' represents the album's undisputed highlight, the rest in no way dissapoints. 'Yada Yada' for one, is an infectious little jazz-funk instrumental jam reminiscent of Lesette Wilson's recent work, smoothesque, but with attitude and feeling in the playing. Simarlarly, the aptly titled downtempo 'Moody Too', takes us on a pleasurable path of sublime cosmic funkiness, with Jackson's electric piano runs giving messrs LL Smith and George Duke a good 'ol run for their money.
Overall, 'Gotta Play' marks an accomplished return from one half of one of the most innovative musical partnerships of the past 3 decades. Now howz about that comeback album with Gil Scott-Heron we've all been waiting for?
This man knows music!.......2003-12-23
As an On-Air Personality on FM radio covering NYC in 1993, I had the pleasure in meeting and working with Brian Jackson. His mini EP released at that time entitled Will There Be?, is the best album I have ever heard. All six tracks are awesome. It was unfortunate "The Nex Thing" which was the name of his group then didn't get the exposure deserved but he blessed Gotta Play with the track Deee-lushuss which was my "1993 Swazzy Monday Hot Pick of the Year". I still have your plaque Brian and wanted to let you know, you haven't missed a beat. PS - I was impressed with Parellel Lean too....
must hear music, will enjoy.......2003-02-20
to tell it simply, i had heard one track played on the radio one night in new york, on 98.7 kissf.m., i said to myself that i had to check out the album. after hearing the album i was very impressed and had to send one to my sister and her husband in savannah,Ga. i enjoy smooth ez listening music. this is one of the best albums yet. i had to order it through the music store, due to them not having it in stock. it was well worth the wait and search.
i would recommend this album to anyone. i had made a tape to play while at work driving around and some white couple followed me to ask who that was on the radio, when told it was a tape they were disapointed. i forwarded my tape to them and informed them who it was by and for them to look it up. they left happy.
Nice to have Stick back.......2002-03-02
Skip right to track nine, Parallel Lean/Home Is Where the Hatred Is which features Gil Scott Heron. It works on many many levels, knowing Gil's demons, knowing their history, and (as Jackson writes in the liner notes) that Brian was out of touch with his parents till only a few years ago. In the 1974 version they were social advocates putting voice to and decrying the weakness of others. In this rendition, in the only song where Brian Jackson does lead vocals-- its about the professional and personal homes to which both he and Gil are struggle to reconcile themselves. There is a real sadness to it, as the prophets themselves have come to endure and suffer the pain. The other tracks eschew messages to deliver funky smooth jazz in a tight, very accomplished, very listenable package that brings Brian Jackson back on the scene with a flourish.
Pure Jazz Funk.......2001-12-24
I heard "Yada Yada" and liked it so much that I decided to take a chance on the album. It's very difficult to go wrong with something that boasts a concious hip-hop flavor. I am very impressed. If you like funk bass lines and strong instumentation in your jazz this is a "Gotta Have"! This is jazz (year) 3030.

It's a testament to Hollywood's desire--nay, need--to complicate things that Cole Porter's 1934 show Anything Goes made it to the screen twice (20 years apart), both times with Bing Crosby as the male lead. For this 1956 version, the plot was rewritten, three Sammy Cahn/Johnny van Heusen tunes were added, and "It's De-Lovely" was brought in from another Porter show (1936's Red, Hot and Blue!). As a bonus, this CD adds three non-Porter songs written for Crosby in the 1936 film version. Confused yet? In any case, this soundtrack may leave Porter fans frustrated but will delight those who enjoy the finger-snapping arrangements customarily found in 1950s Hollywood musicals. The inventivity of the brass section on the title track, for instance, actually eclipses Mitzi Gaynor's perky vocals. As for "I Get a Kick Out of You," between Jeanmaire's French-accented reading and the insane brass section going into overdrive, it's a camp delight. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Anything Goes (1956) Film Sound-track available again!.......2005-04-23
This album was originally issued in the UK on the Brunswick Label, back in 1956. It was deleted in the early 1960s. It is marvellous to be able to obtain it again some 40 years later!
The quality is very good and it is an excellent bonus to have three tracks from the 1936 movie, included - especially the excellent Sailor Beware. The quality here is also remarkably good.
It should be noted that not all of the tracks are recorded directly from the soundtrack of the 1956 movie. In particular You're the Top appears to be a studio recording with Bing and Mitzi Gaynor. I seem to recall in the movie the song was sung concurrently by Bing/Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor/Jeanmaire in two different rehersal locations whilst on board ship. None the less the performance and quality is excellent - A most enjoyable CD especially for Crosby/O'Connor/Gaynor fans and good value at the price.
Wouldn't it be marvellous if this movie could be released on DVD, together with "The Birds and The Bees" - another of Mitzy Gaynor's rarely seen Paramount Technicolor comedy musicals? By the way the same sets are used in both films. Enjoy.
Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire sing superbly.......2004-02-10
This reissue of the 1956 ANYTHING GOES soundtrack from Decca Broadway is a real find. Although quite inferior to basically every other cast album of AG, it still features some great vocal performances from Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and the stunning Zizi Jeanmaire.
Highlights include Mitzi Gaynor's peppy, energetic rendition of the Title Song; Zizi Jeanmaire's all-out performance of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and Bing Crosby's beguiling croon of "All Through the Night".
Though the curious quartet version of "Blow Gabriel Blow" is strange indeed (the number works better as a solo), and the just plain-embarrassing "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" and "A Second-Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball" are two more missteps.
Added as bonus tracks are 3 numbers from the 1936 film version of ANYTHING GOES with Bing Crosby (though these particular numbers were not written by Cole Porter, thank God).
Worth buying if only for the wonderful Zizi Jeanmaire. [DECCA BROADWAY B0001933-02]
For Bing Crosby fans only........2004-01-28
Decca's album of songs from the 1956 Paramount film ANYTHING GOES has always been a hashed up affair, and the decision to release it on CD is curious, to say the least.
The film was not well recieved when it was released and for many years it was a staple of afternoon TV movie shows.
Using the title and five songs from Cole Porter's Broadway hit, plus Porter's "It's DeLovely," Three new songs were needed, and instead of asking Porter, Paramount used Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn who contributed "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" "You can Bounce Right Back";and "A Second Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball." Never heard of these songs? With good reason...they are all terrible!
This is not even a true "soundtrack" album. Several songs were re-recorded in the studio. So instead of hearing "You're the Top" as performed in the film by all 4 stars, we get a cute studio arrangement for Bing Crosby and Mitzi Gaynor.
There are so many fine recordings of the stage production of ANYTHING GOES that this album is of little use unless you happen to be a Bing Crosby fan.

Product Description
Snowdance is a calendar album. Its twelve original songs, one for each month of the year, unfold against the backdrop of the seasons, with narrators splashing in springtime puddles, playing neighborhood baseball games in the summer, plotting to get themselves promoted to the Grownup Table at Thanksgiving, and desperately trying to make it snow during one dismally green February. In Snowdance, Erin Lee & Marci have tuned in to the exuberance, the doubts, the curiosity, and the lyrical spirit of being a kid. Their dynamic range of emotional expression aptly portrays the highs and lows experienced in childhood.

Album Description
Pravda Recording Artists The Goldstars were formed by Chicago rock vets Skipper (organ/bass) and Goodtime (drums) moonlighting from trash rock cult heroes the New Duncan Imperials, along with bassist/vocalist Sal, formerly of the pop outfit, The Krinkles. The three turned to guitarist and friend, Dag Juhlin (The Slugs, Poi Dog Pondering) to up the wattage and loosen up the proceedings. The four mixed instantly, and over the course of several months the dozen songs that became "Gotta Get Out" took shape on the small stages of smoky Midwestern clubs. "Gotta Get Out is a roaring return to rock and roll basics, fueled by greasy Motor City swagger, inebriated punk rock, nasty riffs and bar band glory, all injected with a timeless Nuggets-style shoutability. "Gotta Get Out" is the sound of amped-up rockand roll, played straight and cool, with no frills or Pro-Tools tomfoolery. Ably and quickly recorded at Chicago's legendary ACME studios, "Gotta Get Out" captures the balls-out, from the hip rock of the Goldstars in all its urgent glory. Just add beer.

Mike Bennett Reviews, January, 2004
The highest compliment I can pay The Goldstars is that if you put this disc in a five-CD carousel with discs from some of the original late-`70s/early-`80s garage rock revivalists (like The Lyres, The Chesterfield Kings, The Fleshtones and The Vipers -- Hey! That's four right there), they would sound like they belonged. While many garage rockers nowadays seem to stick with one or two basic ideas, like a lot of the original revivalists, The Goldstars can play it hard, but know that garage rock can be quite poppy.
So this is a record made for WLS Chicago (the city The Goldstars call home) circa 1967. The band has a great front man in Sal (a/k/a Matt Favazza), who used to man the drum kit for promising power poppers The Krinkles . In fact, since the band debuted a couple of years ago, Sal has found a bluesy vocal style that compliments his exuberant stage presence. Skipper (keyboards) and Good Time (drums) of The New Duncan Imperials are also spot on, with Good Time frequently laying down an old-fashioned dance beat and Skipper adding color with everything from warm deep organ sounds to tinny Farfisa-alike runs. These three started the band with original guitarist The Raven, just jamming to songs from the Nuggets box set. Though The Raven had to leave, his ultimate replacement was Dag Juhlin, who has fronted the beloved Chicago band The Slugs for 20 years.
Juhlin's one songwriting contribution, "Hurry Up and Wait", is one of the clear highlights of the collection. The song has both a strong opening riff and a Zombies-cum-Animals melody, with Sal doing the angry young man thing at the mike. The chorus is a simple R & B shout out. Garage rock is built on pithy phrases, and the title of this song is a perfect example. Skipper's tinny keyboard solo provides a nice last respite before the last bits of bile (catchy bile though) get spewed at the end, along with a nice final freak out guitar solo. Yet that song crawls when compared to "Oh Yeah". Good Time plays at a galloping pace on a song that is rhythm, rhythm, and more rhythm. It sounds like the early J. Geils Band hopped up on speed.
The band can also get low down and gritty. Live staple "Devil Queen" is a bluesy howl in the tradition of laments like The Kinks' "I'm Not Like Everybody Else". Here, Skipper plays a warm organ part, which combines with Juhlin's dramatic guitar part to give the song the proper foggy nefarious feel. Album closer "Gotta Get Out" is also pretty salacious, with Sal really exaggerating his vocals, which works on this song.
Like the garage bands of the `80s, The Goldstars are not afraid of pop. So there is some more lighthearted stuff here, on two delightful cover tunes. They do a fine job on The Gestures' "Run Run Run", with a deft performance, particular behind the skins. "Open Up Your Door" is more of a blend of garage and pop, which is all the better suited to their approach. The backing vocals are really strong here.
The Goldstars are a retro breath of fresh air for the Chicago music scene. Despite a legacy of great garage rock from bands like Shadows Of Knight and labels like Dunwich and Qull records, Chicago has fallen way behind Detroit when it comes to bands playing this classic rock and roll style. I hope The Goldstars can keep it rocking and other bands will join `em in spreading the gospel of the beat.

THE GOLDSTARS, "GOTTA GET OUT!" (PRAVDA)

THE GO, "THE GO" (LIZARD KING)
The so-called New Garage revival roars on with considerable grit and gusto, but while the most celebrated of these bands hail from Detroit (from the Gories to the Go, with the White Stripes at the head of the class), not all of the genre's prime purveyors boast Motor City zip codes.
Dead Electric is firmly rooted in the classic Detroit sound, with a heavy Stooges influence, but it came together in summer 2002 from the ashes of Chicago's Plastics Hi-Fi and Young & Pretty. The group makes its recorded debut with a D.I.Y. EP, offering five faster-louder-snottier slices of fuzz-driven kick-butt grunge, including the incendiary title track.
The Goldstars also have deep roots in the Chicago scene; in fact, they're a supergroup of sorts, featuring guitarist-about-town Dag Juhlin (the Slugs, Poi Dog Pondering) and members of the New Duncan Imperials and the Krinkles. Like Dead Electric, they kick out the jams with thunderous passion on their debut album, but they display a lot more wit in the lyrics and some great Farfisa organ underscoring the melodies of tunes such as "Where's My Ring" and "Babblin' Brook."
Meanwhile, back in Motown, the Go (which once counted Jack White among its members) has released a strong, 14-track, self-titled effort that colors its particular brand of oil-stained, "Nuggets"-inspired rock 'n' roll with hints of T. Rex glam-pop, Southern rock, and blues (on the White Stripes-style "Summer's Gonna Be My Girl").
These discs don't offer much in the way of diversity, but that isn't exactly the point: This is old-fashioned party-rock circa 1966. Just grab a six pack, disconnect your brain, and lose yourself in the sound and fury.

The Goldstars, "Gotta Get Out!" (Pravda)
Get set for the British Invasion at your neighborhood bar. The Goldstars, a group of Chicago veterans from the New Duncan Imperials, the Slugs and the Krinkles, collaborate on songs with that familiar stripped down but maximum rock sound. The essentials that made groups like the Faces and the Kinks working-class heroes are here: gritty playing, catchy riffing and choruses meant for shouting along with. Guitar ace Dag Juhlin (also of Poi Dog Pondering) lends some tasty color as does the crazy carnival organ of Skipper. Sal's brusque vocals toughen up songs that veer into psychedelics ("Devil Queen"), surf rock ("Run Run Run") and a close cousin to "Twist and Shout" ("Open Up Your Door"). For those seeking dumb fun that's timeless.
