A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars the perfect movie.......2007-03-10

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-20

This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.

4 out of 5 stars musical memories.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

Evidence of the strange genius of Mississippi bluesman Tommy Johnson is limited to 17 recordings from two late-1920s sessions. It is the first of these, for the Victor Company, that produced the recordings upon which Johnson's lofty reputation rests. Sung in a husky falsetto, somewhere between an African field holler and an Alpine yodel, "Cool Drink of Water Blues" stands atop a pinnacle in the richly inventive Delta blues tradition with younger cousin Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail" and Skip James's "Devil Got My Woman." "Canned Heat Blues" is a bittersweet paean to the older Johnson's penchant for imbibing tins of jellied kerosene, and was a modest hit in that era's "race record" market. Also notable from his 1928 session were the influential "Maggie Campbell Blues," "Big Road Blues," and "Big Fat Mama Blues," while the recently discovered Paramount session was remarkable for "Slidin' Delta" and "I Wonder to Myself." --Alan Greenberg

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Recordings Of Tommy Johnson.......2006-11-10

Tommy Johnson was one of the most unique and influential delta blues men in the history of American music. He has inspired such artists as Howlin' Wolf, Houston Stackhouse, and Robert Nighthawk.
The Complete recorded works of Tommy Johnson is essential to all lovers of blues and American roots music.
Sadly Johnson only recorded 17 classic sided and they are all present on this collection. The sound qualitiy is also superior to previous releases of these tracks. If you only have a few Tommy Johnson tracks on various compilations, it is worth the price to have them all in chronological order as they are presented on this disc. You get to hear what a dynamic artist Johnson was and how he took the influence of Delta greats Charlie Patton and Ishmon Bracey, and even the falseto vocal stlylings of Jimmy Rodgers, and turned them into something totally unique and timeless.
A must have.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets........2006-05-12

I have been a blues fan for forty years, and have listened to just about everybody, from Ma Rainey to Susan Tedeschi, with Muddy Waters and Lightning Hopkins on the way. Nobody is better than Tommy Johnson. Nobody at all. Johnson's great reputation is based on a pitifully small collection of recordings, over half of which were put out on the dreaded Paramount label (Paramount is the despair of blues fans -- on the plus side, without the label we might never have had recordings from Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, early Skip James and early Son House, to name only a few: on the other hand, we are constantly tantalized and frustrated by what we might have had if the company's recording standards had been of even average quality for the time {i.e., late 1920s-mid 1930s} instead of awful beyond description). In any case, the eight Victor sides Tommy Johnson made in 1928, and in particular Big Road Blues, Maggie Campbell Blues, Cool Drink of Water Blues and Canned Heat Blues are at the absolute acme of blues recordings. In terms of emotional power, intensity and sheer brilliance, I have never heard anybody in the blues genre I have thought to be Johnson's equal. I believe that you have to go to some of the great American jazz masters such as Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker to find adequate comparisons.

This Document Records compilation is an absolute necessity for any serious collector of the blues, and particularly of early blues. There were many great bluesmen named Johnson: Robert, Blind Willie and Lonnie to name the best known. However, if you can only take one "Johnson" record down that Big Road, Tommy's is the one to take.

5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......2004-04-12

Before Robert Johnson came along, and long before Son House started spreading the rumour that he (Johnson) had sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his abilities on the guitar, a man fifteen years Robert Johnson's senior ever so often implied that his immense talent came as the result of a midnight deal with Old Scracth.

Thomas Johnson was born in 1896 down in the Mississippi Delta, and though his name is not as well known as those of Charlie Patton, Son House, and Robert Johnson (no relation), he was one of the most important prewar bluesmen, and certainly one of the most talented.
He was also an uncontrolled alcoholic, and the fact that he lived to see sixty is something of a miracle. His "Canned Heat Blues" is certainly autobiographical, and his contemporaries have told about Johnson straining shoe polish through a slice of white bread in order to extract the alcohol.

But his music is something to behold. Johnson sounds totally immersed in it, his voice possessing an eerie quality enhanched by his occational falsetto moans, and this disc includes the original versions of "Maggie Campbell Blues", "Big Road Blues", and "Cool Drink Of Water Blues" (later recorded by Howlin' Wolf as "I Asked For Water (she gave me gasoline)").

Johnson plays alone on a few songs, but on most of these seventeen sides (which comprise his entire recorded legacy) he is backed by one or more additional musicians, most often a second guitarist. The first eight sides, Tommy Johnson's Victor sides from 1928, boast amazing sound quality...much (much!) better than Charlie Patton's or Son House's contemporary recordings, they're clean and crisp with just a little static, and every phrase and every instrument is clearly heard. Johnson was a talented and quite original guitar player, and it is a delight to be able to hear him so well.

The Paramount sides, on the other hand, are...well, Paramount sides. Much inferior in sound quality to the Victor sides, they are nevertheless well worth a listen, particularly "Alcohol And Jake Blues" and the battered "Lonesome House Blues".
On the best of these songs, Johnson's voice is positively frightening, and his "Cool Drink Of Water" is the sound of pure despair. This is some of the starkest, most powerful music you'll ever hear.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Unique of the Early Blues Players.......2004-02-10

Tommy Johnson and Charlie Patton are perhaps two of the most unique and innovative rural blues players to have ever lived. As where Patton's style is coarse and rough, Johnson's style (at least when he is at his best) is incredibly smooth. Also Johnson's unique falsetto (which is yodel like at times) is amazing. These recordings bare witness to his talent even after nearly a century. It is a shame that these recordings are all that there is.

4 out of 5 stars The Victor tracks are worth the price of the CD.......2003-06-18

I agree with the other reviewers, this is a must for any serious fan of the blues, but be prepared for the songs recorded by Paramount, which I found, at first listen, to border on inaudible (which is why I am docking this CD a star). This morning, however, I was listening to them again, and got into them more. That being said, the Victor tracks are unforgettable and worth the price of the CD all by themselves. ... I suspect that when Tommy sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads, the Devil said, "Fine. I'll make you a great guitarplayer BUT half of the music you lay down is going to sound like you were playing outside in a hailstorm." Tommy probably smiled and said, "That's OK because I won't be around long. Just keep me stocked in 'canned heat,' brother." All joking aside, I urge you to check it this seminal music.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-11-06

I haven't had time to listen carefully through all five CD's yet but they're very interesting examples of early blue recordings and I'm glad I have them.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT ONE SHOULD BE PAYING..........2005-12-27

An earier reviewer was whining about JSP records not paying royalties. Who does this chump think the royalties would be paid to ??? Charley Patton is long dead so quit your carping about the copyright owners not getting their fair share. These SOB's are making money anyway. Besides its about the music.

2 out of 5 stars Patton is fantastic --- JSP is suspect........2005-09-15

What seems too good to be true usually is; the complete output of Charlie Patton -- dozens of $1,000+ original records all compiled here for under $30? Only one word comes to mind: piracy.

These are some of the most important recordings ever made, and I certainly have no beef with that. But the buyer should know that most or all of these tracks are lifted from other reissues, in the typical JSP tradition! It's a little like buying stolen merchandise.

If you can get around that, the set is a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Good price; fair sound; borrowed sources?.......2005-03-02

There are both good and bad things about this set. The 5 discs of very rare and valuable material make up a rather incredible compilation. The layout of the inserts is somewhat user-friendly; requiring the listener to pull individual CDs out in order to locate artists. The discography information does not include song titles, which causes a lot of back-and-forth cross-reading. A little confusing.

The sound quality is only fair; when I compare these to Yazoo reissues, I feel like there is no presence in the JSP versions. Too much treble has been rolled off.

My biggest concern is that I believe I recognize many of these remastered sides from other reissues. A little 'tweaking' to try and hide their origin doesn't do the trick. Is this just a 5 CD set of bootlegs? This bothers me for the original engineers who found the recordings and did all the work, just to have it lifted and reissued at a cheaper price by another company.

4 out of 5 stars Essential almost begins to describe it.......2004-11-29

With this review I am officially retracting my Catfish Records Patton box review of a few years ago. I must have escaped my mind somehow back then, because in the past couple years I haven't even been able to listen to the couple Catfish boxes I purchased back then. Skip them, both for the sound as well as for the occasional missed sides and edited snips of tunes that exist in whole elsewhere.

Now for the music itself... as far as I am concerned, Charley Patton gave the world one of the best musical bodies of work ever produced by an American. "Delta Blues" does not even begin to contain him. Charley Patton IS a genre. He created it. He perfected it.

Let's not forget all the other worthwhile musical nuggets here, though. Louise Johnson, the Delta Big Four, Willie Brown, etc... are very good as well. Louise will certainly never win any awards for creative lyrics, considering that 3 of her 5 sides begin with a standard blues lyric..."woke up this morning, had the blues all 'round my bed", but her delivery and piano playing more than make up for it. Who wouldn't have wanted to get trashed in a juke joint while she spanks the piano and belts 'em out?? As for the Delta Big Four, if you've not heard them before, you will probably enjoy their versions of tunes you already know. The Big Four's style is lined-out music, but delivered in a tame manner. It's not the large, polyphonic, drawn-out praise-crying of actual lined-out hymnody. Good stuff, though! It's really too bad Willie Brown was not recorded more often. In fact, it's downright pathetic that he only recorded a couple sides, while an annoying hack like Sonny Terry recorded tons of sides.

Son House's Paramounts are here also, if you have not yet upgraded from your old Document discs. JSP has now re-released Son's sides twice, as he is also on the excellent Legends of Country Blues box (the complete pre-war sides of Skip James, Son House, Tommy Johnson, Bukka White, & Ishman Bracey).

My one minor gripe about this box is that the other artists sides are mixed in with Charley's. Maybe it's just me, but often times when I'm in a Patton mood, he is all I want. 70+ straight minutes of uninterrupted slurring and rhythmic invention. It's tough to ever get that on this set though, considering Disc D, for instance. The first two tracks are Patton, and the rest is other people. Kind of a drag since Bird Nest Bound is one of my favorite Patton performances. Having said that, I still cherish this box. It's the best sounding Patton sides I've had, and I could actually afford it.

5-star music, but I give the box 4 stars for breaking up Patton's sides. An essential purchase nonetheless. Oh one more thing, I'm not convinced that JSP just grabs other releases, tweaks them a bit, and then re-releases them. When I asked them if a complete pre-war Lonnie Johnson box is in the "coming soon" category, I was told that they would like to do him, but that his sides are difficult to get a hold of and a project like him takes a long time to get ready. If all JSP does is tweak previous cd releases, they could just go out and buy the Lonnie Johnson discs on Document and re-release them.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2004-09-07

Great stuff... I was so thrilled to hear the original versions of two songs (Someday Baby Blues and Floatin' Bridge) that I've been playing for the last zillion years, I just couldn't stop listening for a whole day. To tell the truth, when I first listened to Eric Clapton's version of Floatin' Bridge, I had thought that it had something to do with the floating bridge of an arch-top acoustic of hollow-body electric guitar!

In any case, the vocals are strong, the guitar is great and the recording (or remastering) quality is even better. Well, that is, it is much better than some remasters that I have listened to. The "less is more" approach of Estes once again proves that you don't have to perform left-hand acrobatics on the neck to play the blues. On the contrary, the sound always comes first, one note could do much more to bring tears to your eyes rather than 64 1/64 notes crammed into a second.

If you like acoustic blues, this is definitely a must for your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Tennessee blues.......2004-01-25

Bringing together 23 songs recorded between 1929 an 1941, "I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More" is as close to a definitive retrospective of Sleepy John Estes's music as possible. Virtually all of his best songs are here, varied, inventive tunes featuring pseudo-autobiographical lyrics loaded with evocative imagery.

The period covered by this CD was John Adams Estes' best and most creative, cathing him at the height of his considerable powers. He usually recorded with a jug band, which gave his music a great variety of textures...mandolin player James "Yank" Rachell and harpist Hammie Nixon are prominent on most of these songs, and Estes is occationally backed by piano and second guitar as well.

Big Bill Broonzy called Estes' singing style "crying" because of his emotional delivery and light tenor voice, but there is nothing morose or self-pitying about John Estes' music. It swings with a loose, relaxed feel that isn't heard on many prewar blues records, and it is some of the most melodic acoustic blues you'll ever hear.
"I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More" contains all-time classic blues tunes like "The Girl I Love, She Got Long Curly Hair", "Someday Baby Blues", and "Diving Duck Blues", as well as the title track, "Every Ought To Make A Change", "Drop Down Mama", "Clean Up At Home", and the frighteningly realistic "Floating Bridge".
Acoustic country blues doesn't get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Country Blues String Band Style.......1999-12-13

It's not often that you get to hear old blues artists within a band setting. Usually it's just one guy and his acoustic guitar. What sets Mr. Estes' blues apart is the inclusion of mandolin, harmonica, fiddle, and occasional piano. His own guitar picking and his, dare I say, cute voice, make this CD irresistable. The music is catchy and the thoughtful lyrics are easily decipherable. As far as I'm concerned, no blues collection is complete without this CD.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-05-11

I've been visiting this box-set often since picking it up a few months ago. Previous to this, I only had one Memphis Minnie disc, so the vast majority of this box was new to me. Memphis Minnie is truly one of the giants of pre-war blues, yet she seems to be somewhat forgotten. Her name doesn't often seem to roll off the tongues of even many of the people who have gotten beyond just Robert Johnson. Hopefully this low priced yet high quality collection will help fix that situation.

I think I have ten of these great JSP boxes so far, and this is one of the very best.

In the majority of current blues, lyrics are little more than an after thought. Just something to play a supporting role to the trite guitar wankery. The pre-war era was when blues lyrics actually had something to say, and Minnie's lyrics are an excellent window into not only herself, but also into the flipside of life (of that era) and blues... life and blues from the female perspective. Minnie would seem to be as rough and tumble as any of her male counterparts.

Guitaristically, the first major glimpse we get into her playing comes on Mister Tango Blues. Throughout this box it strikes me that Minnie may well have been a more influential guitarist than many of the more famous males of her time. She does things you can still hear people doing today. A compliment to Minnie, but yet another comment on the stale state of most blues today.

One of the things that makes this entire box such a joy is that Minnie's music is comprised of many different styles. Whereas someone like Blind Lemon Jefferson only really did a handful of different things and everything he did fell into those categories, Minnie does everything from low-down blues to more mournful songs illustrating the female perspective, to jaunty, goofily fun tunes, jugband stuff, etc...

If you're only interested in hearing her do When The Levee Breaks, this isn't the set for you, as it's not here. I e-mailed JSP before this box was released and they told me that it would be included on a Kansas Joe box instead. Considering how many Minnie and Joe tracks are on here, I'm not sure why that wasn't included also, but it's a small gripe considering the great price of these JSP boxes and that it it won't bother me to pick up the Joe box for Levee and all the other tracks they did together that were not included here.

This whole box is like a musical treasure chest. Beyond "Thank you Minnie and JSP!!!" I can't think of anything more to say.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Central Texas Czech Music.......2003-09-11

Though I am of Irish desent with this album I imagaine that once more I am a 10 year old boy in Central Texas with my family listening to the Sunday Czech music radio broadcast. Also, there was nothing like a Czech dance with live music, bright lights, and all ages on the dance floor. This takes me back to those happy childhood times and beautiful, happy Texas Czech music.

5 out of 5 stars MEMORIES OF A CZECH-AMERICAN CHILDHOOD.......2000-06-19

GROWING UP IN A CZECH-AMERICAN COMMUNITY we heard the music of our heritage often and with great joy. That memory will be reborn when you listen to this CD. My father was a DJ for 12 years at WRJN, Racine, Wisconsin. He had a CZECHO-SLOVAK HOUR every week and he played polkas and waltzes heard on this CD. The preservation of our heritage by these Texas' Bands and others is a listening pleasure and greatly appreciated.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Agree With The Others On Quality And Content.......2005-06-19

This is a wonderful in depth profile with superior sound showcasing some of the most influential and beautiful music ever recorded in this genre. To label New Orleans Jazz is not proper but one can say it is a distinct hybrid of americana with roots that are international.
Ever-present joy and blues is in it's music.

Of course once you are hooked you will need to hear the great music of King Oliver, with and without the great Louis Armstrong as well as Armstrong's historical Hot 5 and 7 recordings also wonderfuly issued as a box by this label,JSP records with great quality.

5 out of 5 stars Ear popping transfers!.......2005-06-01

I love twenties music and try to collect anything that has been decently transferred from the metal masters or the old shellac discs. This box collection is transferred so beautifully that it puts every other company to shame! Many remasters slice off the highs or lows in order to eliminate hisses and surface noise. These sound incredible. I am not a New Orleans fanatic - I prefer the pop songs of the twenties - but this is an exciting addition to my collection with plenty of superb finds that were new to me. The price is fantastic, the sound seems to have reached the limits of what can be done with these ancient recordings, the sheer quantity of material here - well, this box collection leaves me breathless. A fantastic buy!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Giants and Geniuses.......2005-01-18

The story of black New Orleans jazz in the 1920s is usually told through the recordings of King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and Louis Armstrong. While these were the giants and geniuses of the music, they were not the whole story. This wide-ranging four-disk collection, while omitting the work of some excellent white players, fills in a lot of gaps in the story.

Three of the orchestras in this set were local favorites, who either never left the Crescent City, or left for brief periods and came back. Oscar "Papa" Celestin's Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra was very popular in the 1920s. His bands sound like milder versions of the better-known King Oliver Creole Jazz Band and Dixie Syncopators. Celestin played a tasteful muted cornet. His standout cuts are "Original Tuxedo Rag," "Black Rag," "My Josephine," "Station Calls" (two versions), and "It's a Jam Up." A poor vocalist mars several of the sides, and one regrets that Celestin did not sing on any of his early records.

Sam Morgan's Jazz Band was the hottest of the locals. Their music was rough around the edges, and was in this sense a precursor of George Lewis's music of the 1950s. Their rhythm section, driven by a slapped bass, could swing the entire band. A.J. Piron's New Orleans Orchestra featured the legendary Lorenzo Tio, Jr., on clarinet. Unfortunately, the band combined some rather sedate jazz with a great deal of period dance music, but the first version of "West Indies Blues" is very good.

There are two fine sessions here by Louis Dumaine's Jazzola Eight and the Jones and Collins Astoria Hot Eight. The Dumaine records, like those of Sam Morgan, paved the way for the New Orleans Revival sound. The Jones and Collins band, which was organized just for the recording session, features the fine trumpeter, Lee Collins, as well as clarinettist Sidney Arodin, a white musician who was apparantly "passing" for black in the recording studio.

The giants and geniuses are represented by four stellar sides by the Red Onion Jazz Babies, featuring Armstrong and Bechet as sidemen. Spectacular music, but somewhat out of place.

Also included are the only two sides ever recorded by Fate Marable, who made his reputation on the Mississippi riverboats. The record is disappointing. This is also true of the six sides cut in California by Kid Ory's Sunshine Orchestra in 1922.

Freddie Keppard and Johnny Dodds take up most of the third and fourth disks. Keppard didn't record until late in his life, at a time when alcohol was destroying him, and his records do not match his legend. It is as if Bix Beiderbecke did not start making records until 1929. However, Keppard was still a powerful, if erratic, player. "Messin' Around," the small band version of "High Fever," both versions of "Here Comes the Hot Tamale Man," "Stock Yards Strut," and both versions of "Salty Dog" affirm that the esteem in which he was held by Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet was not misplaced.

Dodds was a prolific recording artist in Chicago in the 20s. His records with Oliver, Morton, and especially Armstrong are legendary, and have been in common circulation for about 80 years. On the sides here, he shines on his own, and brightly. There are eight sides by a band variously called the New Orleans Wanderers and the New Orleans Bootblacks. This is actually the Louis Armstrong Hot Five, with George Mitchell replacing Satchmo, and with an added alto sax. Collectively, these make up one of the finest examples of the New Orleans collective ensemble ever put on wax. "Perdido Street Blues" and "Too Tight" rank with the best Armstrong and Oliver sides. The Oliver-style two-cornet break is revived by Dodds's Black Bottom Stompers on "Come On and Stomp, Stomp, Stomp."

This review is longer than most, but this is a four-disk box set by a large and diverse sampling of bands. Despite a number of routine tracks, the set rates five stars on the basis of the high quality of about half of the cuts.
