Jazz Times
Drummer Stewart leads a band on this 1990 recording including tenorman Joe Lovano, bassist Dave Holland and pianist Marc Copland. They play a mixture of tunes, challenging originals by all quartet members.

Although none of the members of Danú are over the age of 30 here, on Think Before You Think they manage to play Irish traditional music with an authority that belies their tender years. The six instrumentalists whip through the set of dance tunes with an exciting blend of passion and precision. They skillfully blend fiddle, flute, accordion, bouzouki, guitar, and bodhrán into a sound that is rooted in tradition but still sounds fresh. Along with the dance tunes, the band also accompanies vocalist Cairan O Gealbhain on a number of songs that he beautifully sings in both Irish and English. The future of Irish traditional music is secure as long as young bands like Danú continue to get together to play the music of their ancestors. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Irish trad, with a vibrant, fluid feel.......2005-01-28
I came to this album after hearing a couple of the band's later records... and I think this is the best of the three albums I've heard. (And the other two were awesome to begin with...!! ) Lots of gorgeous vocal numbers, and instrumental tracks played with a fluid, pliant feel that brings new life to the style. Highly recommended.
Absolutely the BEST celtic band ever!!!!.......2003-10-27
This is an awesome, awesome, cd. I am a HUGE fan of Danu, and have listened to all their cd's, but this is by far their best. If you like celtic music, you've got to get this one!!! Ciarin has a beautiful voice and all the lads are so, so, talented. If you have a chance, go to one of their concerts while they are on tour through the US!!! I got to go to one a few months back and it was just amazing. I met them all and they are really nice!!! Don't miss this great cd.
Young band with fantastic accoustic talent!.......2003-06-29
Danu has a website all Danu fans need to visit. This is a good natured group of young Irish with loads of musical talent. Their first album, "Danu", was similar to "Think Before You Think", but with Irish Gaelic lyrics. There is something endearing about a group of good, young musicians that have found each other in a common cause of their roots and fine traditional Irish Music. It is the type of formation of a band that establishes chemistry and promise from the very start. If you can catch them on a U.S. tour (check the website), they are still wonderful several years and 4 albums later. This totally accoustic band has a great collection of traditional instruments, including fiddle, guitar, bouzouki (a large, deep voiced mandolin), ulliene bagpipes (a bellows at the elbow for wind), bodhran (Irish frame drum), and concertina (a small button accordian of naval fame). The melodies are sweet and tender, the jigs and reels are rhythm driven, creative arrangements. If you like traditional Irish the tradition Irish way, this album is for you.
WOW!.......2002-04-26
I kept hearing a version of "Fair & Tender Ladies" on a local (Canadian) radio station and wondered who was singing that beautiful song!? After much digging on the internet I found out and what a joy to be able to buy this CD on Amazon.com. The whole CD is great, but buy it just for the heartbreakingly beautiful rendition of the song mentioned above.
Iontach! Which is Gaelic for Stunning!.......2002-03-30
I've seen Danu twice in the last month! They are that good! I have all three of their CDs, and I encourage you: don't hestitate, buy their CDs! Donnchadh's abilities on the bodhran outshine Colm Murphy of De Dannan! Tom is the next Matt Molloy, of Chieftains fame, Noel's fast fingers on the guitar are simply amazing, and Ciaran's voice is breathtaking (his explanations of the meanings behind the songs are also quite humourous!). Their solos are incredible, especially Donnchadh's! A daily dose of Danu will help keep the doctor, and old age away! Slan agus beannach De ort!

think..............2006-11-11
To think that Stewart was only 21 at the time of the recording boggles the mind to his playing ability. Conceptually, Bill Stewart's approach to this album is inspiring. He takes some great solos, and it is really interesting to compare his playing from this recording at the beginning of his recording career to the stuff he is currently producing. Bill's playing is alot more linear on this album (compared to Pat Metheny Trio, for example), very subdivisional.
I personally don't like all the tunes on this disc, but the musicianship demonstrated bridges my personal preferences towards composition.
If you dig Bill, buy it.
Be prepared to play this a lot!.......2000-04-29
Mr Lovano's caressing sax, Mr Stewart's fills either with brushes or cymbal splashes, Mr Cohen's solo or counter melody behind Mr Lovano's solo, together with Mr Holland's foundation, make GOODBYE one of the highlights of this fine album and excellent programme of music. It was first recorded in 1989 for the Japanese label Jazzcity and is reissued by Evidence. The sound quality is outstanding. There are three standards and one classic (LITTLE NILES by Mr Randy Weston),and six originals: the title track by Mr Stewart, two by Mr Holland, one by Mr Lovano, and two by Mr Cohen. The ballads and slower numbers, such as Mr Holland's PROCESSIONAL work especially well and to me are the real meat in this delectable sandwich. Though it has to be added, when they swing on the uptempo numbers, they swing. The "colour" in this music - if I may use that word in the Ellingtonion sense of BLUE DUSK, SEPIA PANORAMA etc)- is notable and quite beautiful. Much of the credit for this must go to drummer Mr Stewart who has the touch and skill to fill out the canvas created by the other players. Mr Lovano became in the 90's one of the music's foremost practitioners. This album captures him at the peak of his formidable powers and the sheer beauty of his tone, his sound on the ballads is well heard here. Mr Holland has been an acknowledged leader on his instrument for nearly 30 years. He's in good company on this album. Mr Cohen may be less well known but he holds his own in this exalted company with an especially fine touch and harmonic sensibility - his RAIN features an excellent solo from him and Mr Holland. This album is going to get a lot of playing by me.
The Real Deal.......2000-01-29
Bill Stewart can turn a rhythm upside-down,inside-out, and backwards with nary a thought, and with the skill and finesse that only Tony Williams or Bill Bruford have heretofore mustered. If you love traditional Jazz in the vein of the old Blue Note era then you HAVE TO HAVE THIS RECORD (for that matter you need all three of Bill's solo efforts)! If you don't then you aren't really listening to Jazz anyway, but rather SCMOOZEPOP!
The tunes are well crafted and the execution is "out there."

This compillation is unique.......2007-06-27
I bought this compillation mainly for the Spanish cover of "There is a light" but when I heard the cd I was amazed,"Heaven knows" by "Sweet and Tender Hooligans" is the best cover for this song ever. Worth buying it, has no relation with the other junk compillation which have ruined the legacy of Smiths & Morrissey like the "World still won't listen". But still think that the best cover of "There is a light" is that of Divine Comedy... Finally the best ever compillation that I have for the Smiths is the Spanish:Una luz que nunca se apagará...Buy it don't hesitate.

Customer Reviews:
A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

"At Last I'm Free From Cocteau Twins".......2003-10-23
I'll admit that I only purchased this compilation to hear the Elizabeth Fraser track "At Last I'm Free" and in all honesty, I was somewhat disappointed. Ms. Fraser may indeed be free from her Cocteau Twins vices but this latest attempt seems conventional and lack-lustre. Given the vocal heights that Ms. Fraser is capable of reaching, fans may find this track less than appealing. Her voice is crisp, and surprisingly her concise, clearly audible words pale in light of her past abilities. It's good to hear Ms. Fraser branching out on her own, even dabbling with the infamous Cocteau Twins mellotron, but if this is the best we can expect from one of the world's greatest sirens then I hang my head in sorrow. Elizabeth, come back to us!

Super collection of Elgar's major works.......2004-06-28
Most compilations of composers works usually only feature, at best, maybe one or two works in recordings that are of outstanding quality, especially if different artists are featured. Such is absolutely not the case with this collection, one of the finest of its sort ever issued.
This box makes a perfect one stop shopping choice for the major, most-well-known works the British composer Sir Edward Elgar. The title is misleading though. The box, on 8 CDs at an incredible price, contains both Orchestral AND Choral works.
Since Amazon does not list the contents, I will :
Symphony Nos. 1 & 2 -- LPO , Solti
Serenade for strings - ASMF , Marriner
Intro and Allegro - ECO , Britten
Cello Concerto - Webber , RPO , Menuhin
Enigma Var. -- CSO , Colti
Cockaigne Over -- LPO , Solti
Violin Con -- Chung , LPO , Solti
Falstaff -- Montreal , Dutoit
Dream of Gerontius -- LSO , Britten
Sea Pictures -- RPO , Mackerras
In the South -- LPO , Solti
Pomp and Circumstance -- LPO , Solti
Imperial MArch -- Band of Grebadier Guards , Bashford
Sospri -- ASMF , Marriner
Elegy -- ASMF , Marriner
Wand of Youth -- Welsh NO , Mackerras
Starlight Express -- Welsh NO , Mackerras
Dream Children -- Welsh NO , Mackerras
Look up almost any of the individual works and you should be able to find these recordings in their individual issues, many with several 5 start ratings.
I won't elaborate on any of the specific recordings, just take my word for that there isn't a dud in the box.

Customer Reviews:
Transcendent Beauty.......2004-08-14
I am surprised that no one else has reviewed this album. Most likely it's because it's not terribly well known.
Anyway, this is an absolutely gorgeous sampling of Russian Orthodox Church music. The Italian baroque influences are evident in some of the pieces, but the rich Russian chordal style always comes through.
The voices are transcendent, and truly evoke a sense of the sacred. If you are ever feeling angry, sad, hurt or stressed out, this is the perfect album to put you at ease. Track 19 will take your breath away.
