Nic Kincaid/ All Music Guide
A cherishable solo recording of tremendous beauty and intelligence, filled with progressive sounds. 4 Stars.
Product Description
Revelator might be identified as a "guitar-based" recording, but the range of sound explored here by Skopelitis and Bjorkenheim is so unrestricted, inventive and all-encompassing as to make the term almost archaic. Darkly hypnotic drones, African guitar styles, controlled feedback and harmonics, Indian sitar sounds and countless other strange-beautiful sources coalesce in an atmosphere that is by turns majestic and mystical, celebratory and brooding. Although they both claim the guitar as their instrument of choice, Nicky Skopelitis and Raoul Bjorkenheim probably couldn't come from more radically different backgrounds. But one essential trait they do share is an inexhaustible thirst for new directions and new sensibilities in music, and with Revelator - a collaboration that, true to its title, attempts to reveal the unexpected as it also explores a slightly spiritual edge - the guitar becomes a vehicle for two distinct voices. From there, the quest for a third voice begins: Where creative forces meet to offer up a glimpse of one possible musical future.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The considerable promise carried forth on Gillian Welch's first two albums is thoroughly fulfilled on Time (The Revelator). Welch has traded the guidance of her previous producer, T Bone Burnett, for the sympathetic studio skills of her longtime guitarist-harmony singer David Rawlings, who loosens the reins just enough to allow moments of spontaneity to sparkle within the duo's spare, eloquent playing. "Revelator" is an instant classic, perhaps the first great folk song of the 21st century. "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll" is three minutes of Louvins/Everlys-style bliss. "April the 14th, Part 1" haunts its historical context with an achingly melancholy melody. It all leads up to the epic 14-minute "I Dream a Highway," one of the finest closing tracks ever put on record. --Peter Blackstock

Customer Reviews:
I want her to sing more of that rock'n'roll!.......2007-07-07
Wow--that track "I want to sing that Rock'n'Roll" just blows me away every time I hear it. I learned about Gillian Welch the way I do about many of the singer-songwriters, by hearing her work covered by someone else. I first heard "Caleb Meyer" and "Elvis Presley Blues" on Joan Baez' "Dark Chords on a Big Guitar". They were beautiful and I went to seek Welch herself out.
No big surprise, her work is wonderful. Her spare style on this CD lends to an intimacy that nothing else will achieve. For the most part, it's just Gillian singing, playing pretty simply on an acoustic guitar. Sit quietly and she comes into the room with you, haunting with her words.
"Red Dirt Halo" is something I can definitely identify with growing up in Oklahoma. 'Port Silt Loam' is the name of the copper intense red clay of the area and the rusty stain is more pernicious than grass. There's actually a company in Oklahoma that uses the red clay to tie dye t-shirts, it works so well.
Only one gig: "April 14 (Part 1)-Ruination Day (Part 2)" is a two parter that I wish was put side by side on the CD. I love the song, but I doubt I'll listen very often, because it brings tears to my eyes. It'd be a lot easier to just skip both of them at once.
A real masterpiece - timeless and thoughtful.......2007-07-02
Considered by many to be Gil & Dave's "masterpiece" (being that it came out right after the huge 'O Brother' craze), Time (The Revelator) is one of the records I can listen to over and over and over again and never get sick of. Gillian Welch has the unique ability to tell a story in her songs, and deliver them in such a way that one has no idea whether they are auto-biographical or just something from her imagination.
The album is slow, with Red Clay Halo and I want to Sing that Rock and Roll the up-tempo old-timey tunes of the bunch. This is definitely an "inspired" album, but don't think you'll be inspired to get up and dance.
Mr. Rawlings guitar playing is fantastic throughout, and Gillian once again picks up the banjo on a few of the songs. Time finishes up with the 14-minute epic "I Dream a Highway", which is, in my opinion a lyricial masterpiece, intricate and detailed and full of emotion.
In short, if you've enjoyed the previous Gillian Welch albums you'll dig this one. If you've never heard them before, get ready for some brilliant, moody, folky song writing, though-provoking lyrics, and stories that are part melancholy, part hopeful, loving, depressing,a little religious and downright captivating!
Gillian Welch - The Revelator.......2007-06-01
bought this because i heard a clip on bbc2. best purchase i have made in a long while. the songs are soothing, foot-tapping and easy to learn. brilliant for listening to on long car journeys, relaxing, or back ground music whilst entertaining. Gillians voice is fantastic as is her partner in crime - david rawlings. what a team. Elvis Presley blues must now be one of my all time favourite songs.
The Way Country Music Should Be Made.......2007-05-01
From the moment you play this album, the words and melody will stay with you. The music is a simple guitar duet, but what really makes this album stand out is the fine songwriting and hauting voice of Gillian Welch. The standout songs on this album are "April the 14th", "Revelator" and "I Dream A Highway".
Normally, I wouldn't like a song like "April the 14th", since musically (and even lyrically, with its out-of-time-and-place historical allusion) it is a dead ringer for Neil Young's "Cortez, The Killer". However, Welch owns the song, and no one can say that it isn't a fine piece of songwriting in its own right.
This is probably one of the best examples of contemporary country music out there.
Great but sad music.......2007-03-17
The first time I saw the Elvis Presley Blues video, I knew that I would have to find out about Gillian Welsh. I bought the Revelator CD and have not been disappointed. I still love Elvis Presley Blues which reminds me of Come to Jesus by Mindy Smith which is also one of my favorite songs.
Each song is very strong although I Dream A Highway is somewhat too long. I usually turn it off before it ends but that is only a small quibble. This is a must-have CD from a great musician who has the courage to create music true to its roots without fear of failure. David Rawlings is the perfect accompanist for her.

Customer Reviews:
John the Revelator is at the top of the mountain!.......2007-01-05
This song stands alone in my mind as the high note on Depeche Mode's latest album, Playing the Angel. The song captures that classic Depeche Mode sound with a modern twist. Martin Gore's spiritual lyrics coupled with Dave Gahan's vocals and the hard hitting electronic sound takes your ears for a great ride.
The re-mixes on this single are second to none. They take the original song and almost suceed at making it better! If you are a fan of remixes than you must make this purchase. If you are a fan of Depeche Mode you have to own this selection.
Good Remixes.......2006-09-02
I thought this CD is much better than the other PTA CD's mainly because there isn't a bad remix. The other CD had great remixes but there are a few disappointments. The Murk Mode Remix is the best. The Dub Mix (last track) is very good too. The UNKLE mix is fun also.
Ugggh........2006-08-07
What is it with Depeche Mode remixes and how they all sound the same? They've been doing this for 15 years now. On top of that, they will have four cd releases of one song remixed in ten different ways . . . and they all somehow sound the same. I feel as if they are taking advantage of the average fan.
I'm not buying these remix albums anymore.
tiefschwarz makes it worthwhile.......2006-07-25
DM will stay the best band 4ever, no matter what, but these remixes are not very impressing (all the remixes for the Angel.singles were flat, except the jacques lu cont mix for A pain that i am used to and some suffer well remixes like tiga's or m83's) the same case here: even UNKLE couldn't make an interesting remix for such a great song, the only tracks i really enjoyed are the ones made by the majestic tiefschwarz, his dub is more interesting, IMHO, but the dave is in the disco mix will be played in clubs mostly, i guess, it uses all the vocal part, and also great samples from the original. cool.

Another Excellent CD from Scott.......2007-05-17
Although not every track on this CD is an out and out winner, they're all good enough and with some truly memorable tracks such as Civil War, Bad Way Baby, Cut You Loose and Power of your Love (slow tempo Marty Balinesque tune that builds to a beautiful solo), I have to give it 5 stars. All of Scott's CDs are fine for you blues/rock fans and this one is no exception.
Not what I expected.......2006-03-09
First off I am not a long time Scott listener,I came across Chipped Front Tooth in a bargan bin and really liked this cd. So I bought Revelator looking for the same hard driven rocken/blues tempo thats just not there, except for a couple songs
Absolutely Fantastic.......2006-01-26
I have listened to this album many times, and it gets better each time. As I understand it from scottholt.com this album was cut in just a few hours, so each song is basically 'live'. My favorite album by Scott was Dark of the Night, but this album has definitely surpassed that. Make sure that you go see him if he is in your neighborhood, for he puts on a great show (I saw him in Hood River, Oregon in Feb. 2005). I loved his work when he was playing with Buddy Guy, and I love his solo work. Just an outstanding, emotional guitar player.
Smoking Hot.......2005-11-24
Scott Holt is a true artist, this release really puts his foot print on the map. If Scott comes to your town be sure to see the show. His CD is great and once you see the live show you will be hooked! So put on your seatbelt and prepare for take off.
Something for everybody..........2005-10-26
I've had the good fortune to have a pre-release copy of this record for a few weeks now...I've had time to listen, reflect, chew on it a bit if you will...Previous to this album, I thought Scott's strongest release was Angels in Exile or Dark of the Night...no longer...this album really captures the essence of Scott Holt...The songwriting is his strongest yet and his voice only gets better with time. His guitar playing is a tour de force of a style I have come to associate with him, "edge of your seat" blues rock...he'll take the song to the top of the cliff, dangle it over the edge, and barely bring it back again, leaving you exhausted...Highlights for me include "Civil War" (amazing song), "Bad Way Baby", "Sunday", "Give Up Drinking", and "Bout to Make Me Leave Home"...oh heck, the whole album is great! Buy the album and then go see Scott live...he's an amazing performer and showman. You won't be disappointed.

revelations of bliss.......2004-07-11
This is another outstanding nicky skopelitis release. Featuring Bill Laswell on sound desighn and not credited, dub bass on the last song right as rain, Bill Buchen on tablas water drums, talking drums exc, no actual drum set or electronic set. Nicky, guitar, coral elecric sitar, and its spelled baglama not (balama), Bowed guitar, and raoul bjorkheim on pretty much the acominment to nicky. This is a bit different for a nicky skopelitis release, instead of the usual jah wobble/ bill laswell dub eastern fushion style it features that of him and raoul in a more full sound scape format, still very eastern, jam style. The songs are very ambient but are fully filled with bill buchen drums very structured thought not disseray ambience. If your not familiar with raoul and would like to hear him ive tried to find a solo release by him but no luck, he is featured on the paul schutze phantom city releaseds shiva recoil live unlive, site anubis, new maps of hell, awesome stuff laswell is also on all three, if youve ever heard projekcts king crimsons side project very similar. Ive also only heard of bill buchen from laswells releases he is spread throught. And if you dont know who laswell is then their is no hope for you.
Didn't know quite to expect from this one...........2003-03-11
...but once I popped it in the player I realized that I was going to take a ambient journey. I've recently become a Bill Laswell fan through a buddy who had a cd (funkcronomicon) and a few listens of that cd I was hooked! Revelator is the type of cd you have playing and the music paints a picture of the world you've never been. Good mood music and will definately set things off! many instruments involved in this piece which includes: Electric, Acoustic, Balama, Bowed Guitars. Along with tablas, water drum, log drum and other percussion. Nicky, Raoul, Bill Laswell and bill Buchen hit a home run on this one! BUY IT NOW!

Customer Reviews:
Why stop at two?.......2007-01-31
Without any doubts, both of these songs are 5-star DM offerings. In fact, both are Playing the Angel favorites of mine. John the Revelator is a classic Depeche Mode pop-anthem full of religious imagery and irony. Martin Gore is at his best here. And Gahan fully captures the intent with his deep sinewy voice.
Moving in closer to the heart and hormones, another common theme in Depeche Mode's discography, Lillian is an almost-retro thumping tune about an uptown girl and lowdown boy. Dave Gahan gives it every ounce of lust and strangelove he can deliver.
So with two such great and instantly classic DM songs off the same cd, why just stop there? Fans and curious on-lookers, Playing the Angel is a glorious work of art. Depeche Mode at their best. There are many more songs you're gonna want to hear; so why just stop at two?
simply the best.......2006-08-12
This is a great single. You can't go wrong with anything from depeche mode.
The Gospel According To Martin.......2006-06-13
Depeche Mode have released a Double A-side single to wrap up their critically acclaimed tour de force, that is, Playing The Angel. And both song choices are wonderful indeed.
First up is John The Revelator. Much like he did with Blasphemous Rumours, from the album, Some Great Reward, back in 1984, Martin Gore shows us his viewpoint of organized religion, from the "outsider looking in." Admitting in interviews that he has never considered himself to be very religious (although his friend and DM bandmate, Andy Fletcher, has always been such), Martin's perspective on the subject is as fresh and unique as it ever was. While some in the Christian and other religious communities have felt threatened by such ideas, it's this same kind of insight that allows one to truly question their own beliefs and draw strength from them in the process, instead of simply accepting everything they've been told, and believing in it blindly. Of course it's always a nice bonus when the song in question is as catchy as all get out, and very danceable too. And with Dave Gahan at the helm of lead vocals, one can clearly imagine him portraying a religious figure, on stage, when performing this song (just check out the music video on the DVD single for further proof). His voice is as strong and powerful as ever here, with a loudness and urgency all its own, that completely captivates those that would listen. John The Revelator is a Depeche Mode song not to be missed.
Next comes the sexy and decadently sultry, Lilian. The phrase, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," cannot be better explained than through the wonderful stylish songwriting of Martin L. Gore, and the soulful crooning voice work of lead singer, Dave Gahan. The story of a beautiful and seductive woman who finds pleasure in having men lust after them, only to end up breaking their hearts, is a universal one, that every culture can identify with. That explosive physical attraction and raw animalistic passion can be heard throughout each and every note, along with the pain and suffering that goes along with it, especially with lines like, "Our pain and misery always hit the spot. Knowing you can't lose what you haven't got." As if to say that it hurts so much being with you, but I still want you anyway, even though I know I will never truly have you. Depeche Mode have always excelled lyrically and musically with this type of subject matter, with songs like "In Your Room," "A Question of Lust," "It's No Good," & "One Caress," to name but a few. "Lilian" is definitely up there with the best of them, and shows us once again why Depeche Mode are still around after all these years. They're the best.
These Single versions shorten both songs a bit. JTR goes from 3:41 to 3:14, editing out the first 5 seconds of the song as well as shortening the ending by about a minute, with a fadeout. Lilian goes from 4:45 to 3:34, omitting the first 15 seconds of the song, while cutting down each verse a little shorter than before, with a much more abrupt ending. This also marks the first time, in Depeche Mode history, that 5 songs have emerged as singles from the same album, in the UK & Europe. Such a disappointment, at the same time, with the decision not to release any more singles, after "Precious," in the USA, except in digital download format. The lack of support in the states, from the dj's, radio stations, and Reprise Records in general, has been extremely poor. I could be wrong, but I don't remember even hearing Precious played on the radio (perhaps it was played on KROQ). A far cry from 2001, when "Dream On" received frequent airplay stateside. Playing The Angel is a well deserved triumph for the band, and had there been a little more help from all those mentioned, the album could've become an even bigger success, here in the US. Still, it is a great album, nonetheless, with a terrific tour to boot. Looking forward to more to come, in the future, from Martin, Dave, & Andy.
Stay Devoted!

he Theory of Reversed Effort is W.O.O. Revelator's fourth release but only the trio's first studio album. The first consequence of the decision to record in a studio rather than live is an enormous improvement in sound quality. Couple this with very inspired playing and the result is W.O.O. Revelator's best album to date. Over the years, the trio of Bonnie Kane (saxophone, flute, and electronics), Chris Forsyth (guitar), and Ray Sage (drums) have crafted a unique blend of space rock and free improvisation. The music can go from tonal rock jamming to atonal chaotic mayhem and back without the listener being able to pinpoint the moment where things went wild. Kane's playing is often very melodious and soulful, while Forsyth favors free playing -- going from textural feedback loops to busy atonal solos that fans of Thurston Moore will have no difficulty relating to. Sage adapts his drumming to the player leading the way at the time, although for this particular recording he seems to make it an objective to never settle on a steady rhythm. The Theory of Reversed Effort contains three long pieces (between ten and 17 minutes in length) and two shorter ones. Highlights include the tension building in "Complex Organisms," the trippy flute passage in the middle of "More One Way Than the Other," and Sage's percussion solo "The Unending Force." This CD should help W.O.O. Revelator get some deserved recognition and consideration as an exciting free rock trio.

They met Ernesto-Diaz Infante and Pat Harman and invited them to join in on two dates that were recorded. The First Time features material by W.O.O. Revelator and The Ernesto Diaz-Infante & Pat Harman Duo, both improvising together with a number of duets showcasing musicians from both sides. The first track, "Merger," presents both bands in a very powerful encounter. A little sloppy at first, the piece lifts up when Diaz-Infante starts playing the piano frantically, soon joined by drummer Ray Sage in a battle of epic proportions. "Whispy Streaks" is a very trippy number by W.O.O. Revelator, with spacey synthesizer and ethereal flute. Other highlights include the Diaz-Infante/Forsyth duo on "The Later Zone," a nice clash of strings that announced what direction their CD Left & Right (released in June 2000) would take. Bonnie Kane lays down a good duo with Diaz-Infante on guitar, her electronically-processed flute working very well with the latter's not-quite-psychedelic floorings on "Kabuki Swell." But when she shifts to the saxophone she comes in way too loud and tonal, not connecting with Diaz-Infante's free ramblings. That moment apart, The First Time makes a good improv album. Ernesto Diaz-Infante shines in yet another context (his versatility will soon become legendary) as W.O.O. Revelator brings a touch of psychedelia in the free form world. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
