Metheny joins bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins, one of Ornette Coleman's finest rhythm pairings, for this 1983 recording. Rejoicing looks closely at Coleman's group dynamics and three of his tunes (though it's Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman," not Coleman's, that opens the album). The three mesh perfectly on Coleman's "Tears Inside," "Humpty Dumpty," and "Rejoicing," with Metheny generating long lines of melody over sprung rhythms. While the guitarist often shifts musical direction from CD to CD, his compositions on Rejoicing offer remarkable contrasts. He creates a rich overdub of electric and acoustic guitars for the ballad "Story from a Stranger," then generates an almost Albert Ayler-like sound for the intensely electric dirge "The Calling," the mood enhanced by Haden's bowed bass and animated by Higgins's free drumming. --Stuart Broomer

Traditional and wonderful.......2007-04-10
I bought this CD for my ballet classes and am really happy with it. It has all of the classics, and each is very true to it's original composition. There are a lot of horns, which are not my favorite, but the strings make it worth every penny!
Awesome!!!!.......2007-02-13

NOT Rejoicing in My Ears.......2007-04-03
I put "Rejoicing in the Hands" on my Wish List based on Banhart's faithful instrumental rendition of John Fahey's `Sligo River Blues' on the "I am the Resurrection" Fahey Tribute disc. After all, it came recommended by Amazon.
On that tune, Banhart displayed great technical guitar-playing skill. So I thought I'd get more of the same if I got "Rejoicing in the Hands," recommended by Amazon.
When it arrived, I eagerly unwrapped the CD and put it on the player. What came out the speakers was definitely not what I expected.
A man was singing with an acoustic guitar accompanyment. I had a difficult time making out the lyrics because of Banhart's whiny nasal vocal style. He sounded like the musical love child of Leon Redbone and Neil Young.
I tried to look up the written lyrics on the CD liner notes, but they were scrawled in an almost unreadable `artsy' calligraphic style like what Dave the Stoner used to draw when he was into his second doobie.
Alas, there was only one instrumental, which was good. So I ripped that to my mp3 player. The vocal tracks I left on the disc, unable and unwilling to decipher Banhart's cryptic and mumbled vocals.

This new genre of freak folk is great. Though, ALL folk is great. The guitar is amazing. He is the best. If you like folk you will LOVE this. The minute i listened to it I was stunned. GREAT ALBUM. Also get Nick Drake if you like the guitar for this.
a meadow in summer........2005-03-14
if you are at all familiar with karen dalton (you should be if not, b/c she's amazing), you will draw comparisons to devendra with her. i find that this album really reminds me of a mixture of karen, vashti bunyan, and a dash of jack white. it's a summer album, hell, it's an all-year-round album, but when i listen to this, i feel like chewing on the end of a long, sun-dried weed while walking barefoot at sundown in late august in my original northern wisconsin digs. that is this album. and all affectedness aside, devendra's voice is just plain gritty and lovely and wonderful, along with his original song-writing and musicianship.
It'll show your ears a real good time........2005-03-04
I didn't think I'd be into this, but it turns out I was wrong. At first glance he seems kinda gimmicky in that precious, indie kinda way, but once I actually listened to Devendra Banhart...well his music is really amazing. His lyrics are sometimes playful, sometimes sad and always surreal, and his voice is one of a kind. The songs are simple, short and mostly recorded solo with acoustic guitar, though electric guitar, percussion and the occasional understated horn or string is thrown into the mix perfectly. Devendra Banhart released another album, Nino Rojo, within a few months of this one. Both albums are very similar in sound and style (they come from the same recording session) and both have a uniform good-to-great song quality. I reccomend you buy them both and if you're not won over immediately just relax, keep listening and don't analyze things so much.

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect trio!.......2007-05-05
This 1984 ECM recording is, to me, is a perfect example of how the guitar/bass/drum trio should work. Produced by Manfred Eicher, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins' rhythm section is both solid and solidly behind Pat Metheny's guitar playing.
When I bought it a few years back, after a couple of listens, I was struck by how I responded to Metheny's different forms of guitar work. My response to his acoustic playing was purely emotional, whilst my response to his electric playing was intellectual. I still haven't figured out why that is. Needless to say, I enjoy both immensely, just differently and on "Story From A Stranger", he adds in a dose of his guitar synth. It doesn't work for me everywhere he uses it but this is one of the places it works very well indeed.
The CD seems to be some kind of homage; three of the eight songs are by Ornette Coleman and the opener is by Horace Silver. Charlie Haden writes one, Pat Metheny writes two and the final tune is written by both Haden and Metheny.
I like all the songs. Well, almost. I've tried hard but I just don't get "The Calling". I guess it's one of those songs that is said to be for a 'specialist' audience. I usually just press the fast forward button - the only Pat Metheny song ever, to make me do that.
Nevertheless, I still consider it a five star CD. I think it's absolutely brilliant.
Don't come "Calling"........2005-08-28
I was really enjoying this album. I really was. Reading a magazine, clouds moving in, breezes in the palms...then came "The Calling". I admit I'm not a dissonance aficionado, but this ripped me from my revery. A live, real time evisceration. I would, I'm sure, enjoy as much following along behind the neighborhood trash truck Wednesday mornings for 10 minutes. I'm going to have to Ipod this album, because the rest of the musical text is great. One reviewer has suggested the number might be an acquired taste, I'll try! I gave the album a 4, because one song shouldn't jade what is otherwise a fine Metheny example. BTW, I love As Falls Wichita..., and to a lesser extent, "Silent Story".
A Classic Metheny Trio!!!.......2005-07-08
1984's "Rejoicing" finds guitar great Pat Metheny teaming up with two of his musical heroes, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins (both of whom had played with legendary saxman Ornette Coleman). Together, this trio has created a standout classic that not only shows Metheny in his then-current prime but also points to what laid ahead for him musically.
The "Rejoicing" can be easily divided into two distinct halves. The first five tracks make up the straight-forward Jazz half. Metheny's interpretations of the three Ornette Coleman tunes (Humpty Dumpty, Tears Inside and the title track) are on the same par as the originals and show off amazing versitility from all three players. The opening cover of Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman" (not the same composition as Ornette's classic) is a rare piece of beauty with the goregous melody reinterpreted on acoustic guitar. Charlie Haden's original "Blues For Pat" is just that - a stellar blues piece in which Metheny really shines. Haden also delivers a muscular bass solo in this piece.
The remaining three pieces form the experimental half of the album. "Story From A Stranger" isn't too far removed from a Pat Metheny Group composition as it features a folk-like acoustic guitar melody and a horn-like lead-line played on the Roland guitar-synth. "The Calling" is a 10-minute free-form piece in which Pat showcases a near-dissonant melody from his guitar-synth while Haden compilments with haunting bowed bass drones and Higgins provides free fills across his drum kit. Halfway into the piece, it switches gears as Pat moves from the guitar-synth to distorted jagged electric guitar stabs. The overall style of this piece isn't too far removed from what he would accomplish on "Song X", his acclaimed collaboration with Ornette Coleman which was to come less than two years later. There is also a slight hint of '80s King Crimson heard in this piece. "The Calling" leads almost directly into the album's closing piece "Waiting For An Answer", a 2-minute atmospheric coda consisting of a low-drone from Haden and echoed guitar harmonics from Metheny.
Even after its release over 20 years ago, "Rejoicing" remains one of Pat Metheny's finest albums. Pat's work in a stripped-down setting gives plenty of room for improvisation and exploration. This album is no exception. The musicianship between Pat, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins is remarkable on every track. This is definitely a must.
Metheny moves closer to Coleman.......2001-01-31
With Coleman's original "rhythm section" Metheny tackles 3 Coleman tunes, Silver's "Lonely Woman" (oh, i wish it were Coleman's) and a group of originals including the long sound exploration "The Calling" which features Metheny's Guitar synth. As a huge fan of the avant garde, it pains me to say that this cut is the weakest on the album, though still quite interesting. If you like this one, look into Song X.
Rejoicing in a new setting for a great artist........2000-04-27
Pat Metheny in a pure trio setting... inventive, lyrical, original. I received this album as a gift on vinyl from the very person who introduced me to Pat Metheny's music. I was startled by the purity of this recording. "Lonely Woman" begins this album in a spare yet lush presentation. Pat luxuriates in this piece with a rich chordal approach. Beautiful, dark and romantic without any sappiness. I have seldom heard Pat play acoustic in exactly the way he played this piece. Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are just there, like air, essential supportive. The next few pieces finds Pat in and inventive Jazz guitar trio setting. Pat's unique style, lyrical yet horn-like, with that unusual phrasing brings a fresh take on each piece. Billy Higgins shows why he is so much in demand by musicians of acceptional caliber. He is swinging, driving and original. Play close attention to his cymbal work. Charlie Haden supplies supple lines and a pulse like rhythm thoughout This trio INTERACTS, they listen to one another. "A Story from A Stranger" is again one of those ballads that, for me rates among his best, fans of his well established group would be delighted with this piece, which builds from a soft lilting beginning to a guitar synth-crescendo. "The Calling is harkens back to his love of Ornette Coleman abstract yet driven, with overlapping synth-guitar lines. This one piece is likely to be an acquired taste for many. The album closes out with a whisper much like "Offramp" did. Definitely, at the time of the release a different look at the, then rising guitar legend. This is one that holds up. Here it is 2000 and I still play it.

This Grammy Award-winning disc showcases the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir ministering to their congregation and celebrating their salvation with such gems as the R&B gospel of "Only a Look" and the hopped-up new traditional "Rain on Us." Both feature favored soloist Calvin Hunt, who also offers moving testimony of having been lost to drug addiction and chaos and found by the grace of God. The public-domain hymn "Holy Is the Lord" stretches into a nearly-nine-minute praise when married with the contemporary "The Lord Is Holy" and the generously sweeping arrangement of director Carol Cymbala. Live... We Come Rejoicing is altogether uplifting. With standouts like the jubilant "Excited About Jesus" and the rock-solid "I Am Not Ashamed," one is bound to feel the spirit move even the rustiest of hearts. --Paige La Grone

It is a blessing time everytime I hear it!.......1998-07-05
This choir has no bad songs. A blessing is received everytime I play the tapes and the CD's (I have both of each!) I never turn the radio on to hear the depressing news of the day when I can be lifted up with the wonderful voices of the choir. I love every song. I thank God for them, those songs and testimonies brought me through some rough times.

Uplifting, inspiring!.......2002-09-23
The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sings with joy to the Lord, whether it's a slower song such as "Praise You" or the upbeat "Excited About Jesus". The soloists are all good, especially the incomparable Damaris Carbaugh who sings "I Am Not Ashamed" and "His Grace is Greater". There is a nice mix of tempos and each song is sung with intensity and from the heart. The song that embodies each musician on this CD is "Giving My Best" and "We Come Rejoicing" because they certainly do both. This is a real blessing!
