For over forty years, Carla Bley has written music that infuses jazz traditions with her own personality. She continues to lead a variety of ensembles, from small combos to large-scale big bands. With Looking for America, Bley returns to the big band format. Totaling 18 pieces, the group is a rich blend of 13 horns, two keyboards, and a rhythm section. She has worked with many of the featured musicians for decades, and Bley consequently composes and arranges with their individual voices in mind. Here she returns to a theme she's visited before, most notably on her European Tour 1977 album (with the piece "Spangled Banner Minor and Other Patriotic Songs"). Touching on the whole of the North American continent, there are nods to Mexico ("Tijuana Traffics") and Canada ("O Canada"). Once again, Carla Bley excels at deconstructing the familiar. --David Greenberger

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.
Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15
The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.
Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13
Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!
Better Every Time.......2007-05-09
This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.
Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07
I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

Dire as it might have appeared when Darius Rucker appeared strumming a guitar in full cowboy regalia on a fast food commercial, Hootie & the Blowfish have not gone belly up. In fact, the songs the band uncorks on Looking for Lucky are so quintessential Hootie, right in line with 1994's Cracked Rear View and its 1996 follow-up Fairweather Johnson, that the three middling discs sandwiched between them and this offering could justifiably be yanked from their discography. The first single "One Love" lifts its sentiment (and its title) from Bob Marley, rubbing the master's message of peace and love with shiny pop polish. "State Your Peace" reins in its heavy-handed theme by way of straight-up sunny rock (think "Only Wanta Be with You" doused with some substance). "Leaving" loosens genre constrictions with a new-school bluegrass cut-up. Even a waltz is a thrown in - a cool, hum-along kind of waltz that makes you want to hear more. Looking for Lucky should cancel all concerns that Rucker & company have a long future of hamburger-hawking. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
It's decent, but too homogenized.......2007-04-23
Like much of mainstream American music, Hootie & The Blowfish have found their groove and settled in a little too well. The songs all sound nice, but each bleeds into the next much too easily. I would mention standout tracks to try, but when songs barely deviate from their comfortable formula of an easy tempo and the same damn three chords... Close your eyes, point, and try a sample song. If you like the thought of 12 tracks of it, you'll be quite pleased with Looking For Lucky. As for myself, I think I'll look elsewhere.
Good,but..........2007-02-27
not as good as Cracked Rear View. It's a little more country than their previous albums if you can handle that.

The album did not dissappoint.. thank you Amazon
Hootie Does it AGAIN.......2006-09-06
A solid "comeback" effort! Hey Sister Pretty is by far the best track on this cd. Funny..the kids (who don't particularly LIKE Hootie) were caught singing along to the song on the way to school after a few listens. State Your Peace, Can I See You, Get out Of My mind...I could go on! GET THIS CD!!
Hootie's Back!.......2006-07-21
While it seems like a lifetime ago that Hootie was the "thing" in music, realistically they've been going downhill eversince the mid 90s. But to my surprise, Look For Lucky is a very good album from the first track to the last. I'm give the band much credit for staying together, perservering and releasing a high quality work.

Again, I have to say that I wish the CD had been longer. I always enjoyed playing Sousa's music and The Marine Band sounds like they do also. Enjoy!
Sousa Was THE March King.......2004-08-14
Being a big Sousa fan, I bought all four CDs in this series performed by the U.S. Marine Band. All in all this is a very comprehensive collection from an American icon (or should I say two American icons?). The overall quality of the recording as well as of the musicians is superb. No wonder the U.S. Marine Band is "The President's Own". Stirring stuff, indeed! I was amazed at the number of marches that were included that I had never heard before. Especially interesting and historically significant is the inclusion of selections recorded in the 1890s by John Phillip Sousa and his concert band. This series is well worth the price for band nerds like me.

Sexy! Slinky! Better than ever! x x x x x x .......2006-05-28
Don't hesitate! This is worth every little $! Jam-packed with top class remixes! "New Love" - remade, resung, remixed! It's about time too. It's always a pleasure to hear a new Jody Watley record but this is special. The track itself sounds as fresh as it did when I first heard it on the US top 40 countdown way back in the 80s!
Some of the mixes here hit but others miss - though I'm sure they work for other people. My favourite is the mix by upcoming talent Chus & Ceballos. (Check out their fab work on Madonna's "Hung Up" and Michael Gray's "Weekend"!) Here, they work up a dirty bassline over a tribal-ish beat, lots of percussion and some fab synth touches -and make full use of Jody's clean, sexy vocal. I love the "my love ... was true" bit at the 6 minute mark - building up to the final throwdown. Dirty! Sexy! Ah - I'd love to hear this in a club!
The main mix - the ROCAsound mix - is also fabulous! An electronica extravaganza with chunky house beats and a squiggly dirty synth! Go to iTunes or track down a promo for the brilliant Jody Watley vs. Alison Limerick mix - a super cool mash-up with fat beats, funky guitars and an oh-so- irresistible piano breakdown at the 4 minute mark!
No wonder this track hit the coveted No.1 spot on the US Billboard club chart. It's a dance fan's dream. It's about time Jody showed those other so-called Diva's what she's made of! Who needs a big name remix anyway! Claps for Jody for going it on her own -with integrity, style and a great attitude.
My love ... is true!
x X x Check out the website - jodywatley.net - for all the latest on Jody and up-to-date news on the forthcoming album! Go to the online stores and try out Jody's fab new version of Madonna's Borderline > hear it to believe it!
Great Remixes, Vocals on Point.......2006-04-28
"Looking For A New Love 2005: The Remixes" is a CD single which features new remixes with new vocals of Jody Watley's most recognizable hit single "Looking For A New Love." Last summer one of the remixes hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart. My favorite remix is the ROCAsound Mix. This remix really gets me going when I am at the gym working it out. This is a real nice set and you get your money's worth, a ton of remixes rather than just 1 or 2, for a great price. It's a great teaser--Jody has a new album coming out later this year named The Makeover--I read this on her official website jodywatley.net. This is a great remix collection.
( Great Remixes For A Classsic Hit ).......2006-04-25
This remix cd is right up Jody's alley. She's not only mixing soul with electronica, but showing those other wannbe diva's that is good to take music to the next level. I enjoyed every remix on this cd and can't wait for her full length album to come out later this year. Jody has always been five steps ahead of the rest. Keep going girl!!!!
Hajee.
Jody only gets better as an artist with age.......2006-01-07
Although, "Looking For a New Love 2005" is not the bass-heavy, sparse synth, thunderous beat hit song the original 1987 version is, this version is pleasant enough as is. The Electronic/Dance genre is made up of many, many styles which vary greatly in sound. This, although not piano driven, is Soul music influenced Garage/House music. This sound is more likely to hook someone into Dance-Pop or Urban contemporary than Trance. I was not disappointed by the mixes at all. Obiviously, many enjoyed this version of "Looking For a New Love" is liked since it peaked at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play. Jody's vocals are silky smooth and warm, as is most of the mixes. All the mixes are nice enough for me since they move my body and make me feel good, the mixes have done their job. If you are not into the colder, more abrasive styles on the Electronic/Dance genre such as Trance, this should be to your liking.
A definite disaster...........2005-12-12
I agree with the other reviewer. Not a single mix on this single captures the integrity or attitude of Watley's original recording. It's all watered down into bland soft house mixes--and a couple of really bad electro attempts. AWFUL. Maybe they couldn't afford one of the more aggressive remixers to do a job on this classic track?

Customer Reviews:
Irony & (/or?) patriotism.......2003-07-08
As Carla Bley herself says, "The timing couldn't have been worse." 21 minutes of this (59-minute) album are taken up by a suite based around "The Star Spangled Banner"; the album was actually released as US forces assailed Iraq, not exactly a great time to be flagwaving, even with a dose of Carla Bley's characteristic irony. In the event the suite is a rather unsettling mix of cheerfully jaunty grooves & some darker sequences, notably the moody setpiece for Andy Sheppard's tenor & the following free-jazz uproar which leads to a rather mystifying interpolation of "O Canada". The piece ends fittingly on an ambiguous & downbeat moment: a rousing & mostly "straight" (though mildly harmonically tweaked) statement of the national anthem is interrupted by a very dark response led by Gary Valente's trombone, & the piece then completely deflates, the final phrase of the national anthem delivered in a barely-audible pianissimo. I imagine that the interpretation of the piece's import & success will vary wildly with each listener, which is as it should be.
The rest of the album is something of a grab bag of snippets & finished items from Bley's workshop--four lovely miniatures that are all that remains of a failed attempt at a large-scale work, "The Mother"; bits & pieces from various commissions that didn't pan out (e.g. an album of traditional & children's songs that never came to fruition--the result is a peppy setting of "Old Macdonald Had a Farm"); a bop workout called "Fast Lane"; a nice Latin ballad, & a weird takeoff of Mexican music called "Tijuana Traffic" (which has a startlingly dissonant interlude in the middle which is neither prepared for nor resolved, simply starts & stops; the rest is merry south-of-the-border pastiche). It's all worth hearing, but somehow this strikes me as too bitty an album, & too dependent on the listener's being attuned to Bley's musical & ironic sensibility, to rank with her strongest work. Still, definitely worth a listen, not least for the memorably weird reworking of the national anthem.

From Broadway to Hollywood........2007-02-12
Tibbett had the talent and the way to express it. Would that I had been around to have enjoyed it in person. Who is out there today????????
One of the greatest singing artists of all time !.......2006-01-29
The baritone Lawrence Tibbett was one of the first American artists (with Rosa Ponselle) to gain international fame and acknowledgement in opera. This disc documents his great artistry very well, although it does lack represantation of his great operatic roles.
Tibbett gives every song and aria his whole heart and mind. He may not always sing perfect techniquely, but the truthfulness and drama Tibbett brings to being is superb and has in my opinion never quite been equaled.
This record encompasses all Porgy and Bess recordings he made as well as some very impressive portrayals of ballads and songs. I would recomend this disc not only to the collector but to all who can tolerate a bit of surface noise inorder to hear one of the greatest singers of all time :

I found a treasure in LOOKING FOR AN ECHO..........2003-03-11
While brousing through Amazon.com's DVD section, I stumbled on the movie LOOKING FOR AN ECHO. Being a fan of Armond Assante, I read the excellent movie reviews that strongly encouraged buying the sound track. I ordered the movie along with the sound track.
My treasure was discovered when watching the movie; hearing the beautiful harmony that reached deep within me bringing back the years of my youth, when many groups harmonized ... when my mom and dad harmonized and me along with them and with my brother and sisters and friends. Not enough harmony is around today. I struggle to find the music I enjoy, music that has a melody that one can actually hum ... romantic music that makes one 'feel', tells a story, music filled with songs of love and inspiration, encouraging one to dream.
I had never heard of Danny and The Dreamers. I only wish I had as I have fallen in love with their sound, the sound that Kenny Vance and The Planotones expertly portray with their magnificent sound of Danny and the Dreamers. I will search for more Kenny Vance and the Planotones recordings and research the music of Danny and the Dreamers if they are still recording?
To Kenny Vance and The Planotones, I say ... don't stop now. Make more harmoneous music we can listen to. I have my LOOKING FOR AN ECHO album in my car and play it every time I drive. I love your sound and so does everyone who listens. Please ... make more recordings and thank you for making my kind of music. I'll be waiting for more ... and listening.
A Florida fan who loves harmony
DOO-WOP NEVER BETTER!.......1999-11-25
Having grown up to the classic harmonies of the 50's and early 60's doo-wop, this album is an absolute revelation! Every time I listen to it, I am taken back in time. The interpretations of this fantastic group of these songs is unbelievably smooth. Kenny Vance has one of the finest voices I have ever heard--melodic, silky and powerful. His falsetto is amazing. No group was better--back then or now. As simple as the song "Looking For An Echo" is, to me, it is the epitome of the genre. If you love doo-wopp, buy this album. It will quickly become a favorite!
TOP OF THE CHARTS ALBUM..........1999-08-24
I am a collector of all oldies and doo wop music. When Kenny sings his track, Looking for an echo, it will bring you back to the old days, when music was for real. I can sit and listen to these songs over and over. Growing up in Brooklyn and reminiscing brings back unreplacable times and memories. No oldies fan should be without this c.d., in their collection.
Doo Wop In Its Purest Form.......1999-02-16
Heard the title track on a N.Y. oldies station 18 months ago and was absolutely floored! Took me 9 months to find the CD (pre-internet days) but the search was worth it! Growing up in Brooklyn N.Y. during the doo wop era, I know the H. S. they sing about and what every street corner group was doing to be heard. The lyrics recreate those moments exactly! Another great track is "Your Way". It captures the simple essence of slow doo wop singing the way it was done back then. Even the "cover" songs are handled beautifully, with slightly different arrangements to make them fresh again. Kenny's voice may not be as powerful as Jay Black's, but his style and back-up group do a masterful job on all tracks. A great addition to any doo wop afficianados collection. You'll be playing this one over and over for some time to come!
fantastic to chill out to........1998-11-26
This brought me back to my high school days. I want more!! Great sound, easy to dance to, I feel like I should be on Dick Clark's Show for saying this, but it's true.
