Customer Reviews:
This was heck a show, and the CD is as close as we can get to it!.......2006-02-20
We went to Shirley M.'s live show about 20 years ago and tremendously enjoyed ourselves. Around then we purchased the disk that we played numerous times. With the change from longplay discs to CD's the disc ended up where they all do..in a box in the garage... Now the CD came out, I bought it and since played it 50 times...great show, great songs, great atmoshphere..
Steel Shirley.......2004-09-24
I encourage any fans of live performance artists and entertainers alike to add to this to your collection. Since seeing Shirley live these days is a rarity; this might be the closest we can get. Her stirring renditions of, "If My Friends Could See Me Now," & "She's a Star," get you going and you will be humming and singing them to yourself for a week! Shirley is an often forgotten "triple threat!" But she pulls out her triple threats and treats you to a unique trip into Shirley's world of song, dance, and acting. I also hope that DRG Records is able to put together a release of this show on DVD/VHS format or another of Shirley's live shows. I hope many people buy the live CD sending the message that Shirley is loved and that we want more! Shirley proves she is a seasoned pro and before she became a Steel Magnolia she proved her talent and grit on stage was solid as steel as well! Enjoy Shirley Maclaine Live At the Palace!
a great recording from a great star.......2003-02-08
This new reissue of Shirley MacLaine's album 'Live at the Palace' is a fantastic testimony to Ms MacLaine's musical talents (which aren't lauded nearly as much as her acting talents).
Ms MacLaine mounted her own solo show at the Palace Theatre in 1976, resulting in this live recording. She sings most of her numbers from the film version of SWEET CHARITY (in which she memorably starred) including "My Personal Property", "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now". She also sings the title song from IRMA LA DOUCE (although the film version is devoid of any musical moments), and delivers a reminisce of her favorite acting role - in 'Some Came Running' - before sliding into a rendition of "I'm a Person Too".
Ms MacLaine also talks about subbing for Carol Haney in the Broadway production of THE PAJAMA GAME, which catapulted her to stardom. It's obvious that dear Shirley is having a marvellous time here. I urge Broadway fans to snap this up; this is yet another lovely reissue from the good folks at DRG.
Shirley's Personality Shines.......2002-09-17
This album is a must for Shirley MacLaine fans! Her sparkling personality shines through each song she sings and each monologue she shares with the audience. One can only wish this dynamic performance was available on video. In my mind's eye I can almost see Shirley dancing as she performs at the Palace.
Remember you? As if we ever forgot!.......2002-05-22
The prejudice against Shirley MacLaine's performance in the 1969 film of "Sweet Charity" has always mystified me. Okay, so she wasn't Gwen Verdon - who was? She contributed, in a scene of almost unwatchable pain and desperation, one of the most shattering moments in post-war cinema. She was charming, sweetly funny, vulnerable and heart-breakingly hopeful. She sang with humor, gusto, and intense, if delicate, emotion. And she danced the hell out of those great, knock-knee'd Bob Fosse numbers. If her Charity isn't the finest performance in a movie musical since Judy Garland and James Mason slashed the heart in "A Star is Born," I don't know what is. All of what Shirley MacLaine can do best is in that movie, and in this great 1976 live recording. Parts of the extravaganza may feel a bit overdone, a touch self-conscious (if not downright self-congratulatory), and the often effective Cy Coleman arrangements may occasionally border on aggressive showbiz-iness. But Shirley MacLaine's electric gifts shine through. If she hasn't got you by the time she gets through her passionate, whirl-wind rendition of "She's a Star," you're probably beyond gettin'. So, now that Shirl is finally on CD ... Decca - where's that "Sweet Charity" soundtrack?

Customer Reviews:
Yo! Philly! Remeber this guy?.......1999-07-02
Ask any Philadelphian which radio station to tune to for a weather forecast, sports coverage, or general news, and you'll invariably get one answer: KYW. Although it's now a Group W all-news outlet like WINS in New York, in the '30s KYW had an in-house band. The station's 1937 headquarters is still standing at 1619 Walnut Street, and I marvel at the echoes of the ghosts still playing in what was once studio "A" up on the fourth floor. The head ghost was one Jan Savitt, evidently a charming little guy who led a tragically short life. Strolling a few steps away will bring you to South Broad Street and the stretch of bronze stars mortared into the sidewalk that constitutes the City of Brotherly Love's musical "Walk of Fame." Charlie Ventura's there. So are Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Kitty Kallen. Eddie Lang has a well-deserved star, but Joe Venuti still doesn't. (His gravestone in Holy Cross cemetery is pretty cool, though.) Even Ed McMahon is there. But Jan Savitt's nowhere in evidence along the walk. That's kind of ironic. He was one of the youngest members ever to play in the Philadelphia orchestra. He had a little to do with helping fledgling KYW to become a household word around here. His was the featured band at the Arcadia Restaurant, which used to be in the Widener building, just a Tastykake's throw away from the Walk. And he gave the spotlight to a handsome, articulate African American, George Tunnell, as his vocalist. (Known as Bon Bon, George Tunnell hasn't got a star on the Walk, either.) This CD crystallizes a few moments in this city's musical history. "Hi-Fi" is a relative term for 60+-year- old recordings. Archivist Ed Burke, who has done yeoman's service in preserving some very rare swing, has managed to squeeze every last drop of sound out of two extremely rare broadcast performances. The first 10 tracks are from a broadcast out of the Arcadia restaurant. The first track after the intro, "Tell Me with Your Kisses," is an upbeat swing tune composed by Savitt. There is a good trumpet solo at the beginning that sounds like Johnny Austin. (Glenn Miller grabbed Austin for some early recordings, but musically hog-tied the man by stuffing a mute into his horn. He did the same thing to Charlie Spivak in the '40s.) Bon Bon gets in one of his light, bright vocals on "My Own," and a rich, mellow one on "Change Partners." Except for Fred Astaire's, this may be the very best reading down of this tune from the film "Carefree." Carlotta Dale, one of the very best of the '30s vocalists, has excellent vocals on "I'm in a Fog about You" and "I Won't Tell a Soul I Love You." The latter is an especially good tune for her rather dramatic-sounding voice. The band's shuffle rhythm suits "Lambeth Walk" nicely, as does the dulcet alto sax solo. The remaining nine tracks, from a studio broadcast, contain a few surprises even for the few aficionados of this band. "I Married an Angel" is a good medium-tempo instrumental. "Heart and Soul" is just the right kind of tune for Carlotta Dale. Her phrasing is hard to beat and her style highly individual and very late '30s. (It's the kind of sophisticated voice you expect to hear from a screen star, vaguely like Karen Akers'.) "What Goes on Here in My Heart," is classic Savitt. The piano intro, muted brass melodic line, trombone scoring behind the solos, and low-register saxophone ride out with open brass fanfare. "No Wonder, " a tune written by Savitt, is another fine instrumental, and goes to show the workmanship he put into his arrangements. It is also, however, a very similar arrangement to the one on "What Goes on Here in My Heart" and "I Married an Angel." If this band had a weakness, it was that the line between stylistic and formulaic sometimes got blurred. Savitt's may not have been the most innovative of the swing bands, but it was a sparkling, tasteful, and often quite distinctive outfit. This CD offers some of what little that remains of a band that has been all but forgotten in its hometown. Yes, there was music in Philadelphia before Frankie Avalon, before the Geator, and before WFIL. But what about Ed McMahon? What was he up to on the music scene in 1938? Rumor has it that he was employing his voice to entice theatergoers to buy popcorn and peanuts. Must have been pretty musical to merit a star on the Walk. Too bad no recordings survive.

Live In 1938-1939, Vol. 1 ARTIE SHAW.......2007-02-10
Great Swing, Big Band CD, if you can get by the tape hiss. Don't know why this was not edited out. Some Record surface noise also, (Sounds like the recordings were on LP and transfered to tape). Other than that the Best "Live" Big Band cd I have ever heard. The Audio quailty increases after track 5, good Audio recordings for "Live" in the late 1930's. Anyway, I highly enjoy it !
Live in 1938-1939, Vol 1.......2006-02-22
Superb sound quality for 'airchecks' of this type. "live' is 'live'! For nostalgia buff who get up early, the Today Show's former newscaster is the announcer early in his career on a couple of the airchecks. Enjoy!
