Enlisting drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Malachi Favors, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith had to have been tempted to make Golden Quartet explode with grooves--especially with the CD's opener, titled "DeJohnette." Instead, pianist Anthony Davis and Smith keep the harmonic and melodic gears pulled loose so the band jangles and gets steam and then explodes, only to reset, disperse, and go wild again. Smith's Golden Quartet has the bearings and chops of a supergroup, undoubtedly, and they use their collective power forcefully and to great result--heading into thickets of spread-open space with expansive patience. They go from free-time ruminations to a fittingly sly march cadence on "Celestial Sky and All the Magic: A Memorial for Lester Bowie," and make "The Healer's Voyage on the Sacred River" a terrific modal ballad. It's not until the last tune, "America's Third Century Spiritual Awakening," that the quartet launches off, with DeJohnette locking into a rhythmic rumble that takes Smith skyward in a slurry, bright, and fast show of genius. Here's a band of veterans jelling anew and never sacrificing the collective good for the benefit of an individual. --Andrew Bartlett

Working Classical might just be the perfect outlet for the composing skills of Sir Paul McCartney. Here, the former Beatles (and, let's not forget, Wings) member scales things down from his previous classical-music endeavors--the overweight works Liverpool Oratorio and Standing Stone. In the hands of the Loma Mar Quartet chamber group and the London Symphony Orchestra, McCartney's shorter compositions sound all the more intimate (and effective). Album opener "Junk" is a simple waltz dating from the composer's days with the Fab Four, performed here by the Quartet with short-but-sweet results. "A Leaf" is another waltz motif, this one performed with a full orchestra. McCartney pop favorites "Warm and Beautiful," "Somedays," "She's My Baby," and "The Lovely Linda" all get chamber-music treatments that bring out their compositional beauty. And, while influences seem to range from Janácek to Morricone, there's no doubting that McCartney knows how to write a convincing ditty--pop or otherwise. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Format to Present Paul's Genius.......2006-11-20

Confused recent reviews have argued about whether this is classical or MUZAK. Whatever you want to call the form, the music itself is brilliant and inspired. We would not give two shakes about these tunes that are in some cases thirty-six years old if they had no draw to our hearts and no merit. This album would have been released and forgotten and that definitely has not happened.

I have just listened to the broadcast of Paul's most recent classical work Ecce Cor Meum from Carnegie Hall in New York (Nov. 14, 2006) and prior to the main piece, the soprano Kate Royal and another vocalist sang these songs accompanied by the same quartet that appears on Working Classical. It was essentially a live version of this album with vocals and it was brilliant as is the original Working Classical CD. My Love, Warm and Beautiful, Calico Skies and Junk come off as extraordinarily brillant as they do on this recording. These songs, whether in this form or closer to their original form, will live forever and no amount of "orchestration" can kill them.

The same reviewer wrote: "it is a sign of the decline of serious culture that so many people actually believe that this MUZAK is classical music". How pompous some classical music fans are that they cannot conceive of any important music being written in modern times. Another reviewer wrote: "an orchestrated pop song is still a pop song". Perhaps, but that is not a fatal critcism that would obviate the joy these melodies give and emotions they hold. On the contrary, this is not elevator music. Elevator music is not compelling, its not memorble and its not written by a genius named Paul McCartney.

If you were to take a sonata by a well-known classical composer and play it among 'elevator music' with an overblown song like "Feelings", for example, would that turn it into elevator music? The discerning among us know the difference. An orchestrated pop song is not just MUZAK. That is just simple-minded. This idea comes from John Lennon's song "How Do You Sleep?" during which he idenifies Paul's music as MUZAK. John later denounced and rejected the sentiments of that song.

It turns out Paul is the coolest Beatle because he is the least affected, the least afraid to worry about what people would think about his doing something like this recording. He is not worried about the posturing associated with the tough guy rock and roll image. He is first and foremost an artist and musician--one of rare quality and talent.

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT classical music.......2006-11-07

It is a sign of the decline of serious culture that so many people actually believe that this MUZAK is classical music. As another reviewer wrote: an orchestrated pop song is still a pop song. It's so funny: in the 1960s, kids used to laugh at their parents for being so square for listening to 'elevator music'(i.e., orchestrated pop songs) and not being cool and listening the Beatles...and now those kids are adults and they are listening to...elevator music written by one of the Fab Four!!

5 out of 5 stars one of my favoirte cds.......2006-08-05

sir paul writes such beautiful melodies. found this in the library and just loved it. it is such a peaceful pleasure to listen to. you will find some familiar tunes and other new ones. i find it moving and lovely.

5 out of 5 stars Is it possible to wear out a CD?.......2006-03-26

I first heard the song "Tuesday" on my "wake-up" radio station. I was amazed and thrilled when I found Paul McCartney as the truly gifted composer, proven by this glorious work. Some of the tracks are reminiscent of old Beatles songs.
His music possesses a gentle whimsy and include orchestral or chamber versions of some of his recognizable songs such as "Junk," "My Love" and "Maybe I'm Amazed."
I'd read all the reviews and have included a snippet from one which I am happy to share... this just says it all...

Gerald R Steele
"An extension of an event, begun in the sixties, called, "The Beatles", Paul McCartney has confirmed the importance of the original Phenomena. Some of us realized that from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" a culmination of music, from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Gershwin, and Vaughn-Williams, was emerging.
One can only hope for more. This tribute to Linda may begin something that will reference a "pop-culture" that included "The Beatles" as the beginning to music that truly responds to "the inner-ear" of, at least, three generations. This is the stuff that lives for thousands of years." Thank you Gerald. Imagine, touching the hearts of THREE generations?

My own love for this album is enhanced by my friendships as I compare my feelings, during listening, to them. A dear friend, Linda, rides her mechanical steed every morning and I think of her as I listen to "The Lovely Linda". I can see her in the morning dawn, peddling along and enjoying the morning and life. "Calico Skies" is reminiscent of all my Mitford pals! So dignified and serene! I'll probably wear out this CD from playing it so much.

5 out of 5 stars It's absolutely beautiful!.......2003-01-22

There are no words to describe this CD. It is emotional, strong, beautiful, and stunning. I would have NEVER expected violin and McCartney to be so prodigious together. I highly recommend this CD, if you can appreciate classical music and Mccartney music, in any way.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

4 out of 5 stars Pieces of Pieces--4.5 stars.......2007-06-05

According to Keith Anderson's CD insert (in English, French, & Spanish), "Georg Philipp Telemann [1681-1767] was among the most distinguished composers of his time." He was a friend of Bach's & was Bach's 2nd son's godfather. This CD contains many of Telemann's best & most famous works. I have other versions on CD's, esp. the Suite in A-moll (minor), Viola Concerto in G major, Trumpet Concerto in D major, & table music. For more of the latter--there's a 2 CD set "Dinner Music" B0001XBBPO Georg Philipp Telemann; Dinner Music Vol. 1 & 2 with Concertos by Johann Hummel & Franz Richter and "Musique de table" by Essential Classics/Sony. This CD is a generous 71:07 in 23 tracks/movements. It's strength is in its selection & variety. This, however, is also its weakness--many selections are pieces of pieces--not the entire composition. Thus, they appear shorter than other versions--mostly due to this excerpting. Similarly & simultaneously plus & minus, except for 2 by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the pieces are performed by different orchestras. Thus, I'd say this CD is a fine introduction to Telemann, but suggest further exploration to comprehend the fullness of his compositions. Still, I would give this a 5 star except for one thing. The lead-in piece, arguably Telemann's most famous, the A-moll is simply IMHO played too fast. It lacks the majesty shown in other renditions of this piece. Not a good way to start.

Also, I'd recommend: Telemann: Viola Concerto; Don Quichotte; Hamburger Ebb und Flut /ASMF * Marriner and The Sensuous Baroque

4 out of 5 stars A great baroque album by one of the masters of baroque composition.......2007-03-04

George Philipp Telemann is a great introduction in to the world of baroque music. This album was the very first classical album that I bought (about 10 years ago) and I have found my love for baroque and classical music to increase exponentially ever since.
This album shows the true beauty of baroque by using instruments to their fullest potential. The baroque period was one of growth in knowledge of the arts and music theory played a large part in that knowledge.
Telemann, in my opinion, was one of the greatest baroque artists. I know that works such as Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Handel's "Messiah" were the defining works of baroque, but Telemann used the smaller and more intimate groupings like chamber music. Even his orchestations were minimalized so as to accentuate the instrument on which he chose to focus.
Telemann was a master of the baroque age, if somewhat unsung, and I would recommend any of his albums, but this one has a special place for me as it was the first classical album that I bought in a now excessively large classical library.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction at a Great Price.......2004-12-06

I had heard some of Telemann's work on interent classical stations and wanted to learn more. This is a great introduction to a great composer at a great price. I found the quality satisfactory and my stereo is fairly advanced. The music flows nicely, which is not always the case with "best of" compilations. This will become a core part of my classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Baroque Variety.......2003-12-23

Here for baroque lovers or those interested in exploring one of its most prominent composers is a collection of some of the very best of Telemann.

What an enormous output this great German composer put out! From church music to chamber music, Telemann uses all the styles of his era, from Italian to French to German, he does them all execeptionally well with his own style of clarity and fluidity.

The Viola Concerto is absolutely gorgeous, and it's a shame that this resonant, sensuous instrument doesn't not have a wider repertoire. Kyselak is marvelous in his phrasing and expressiveness.

The Recorder Concerto by Stivin is just delightful and exemplary of the fine liltiness of baroque. The Quartet in G Major from Tafelmusik I is admirably performed by the Orchestra of the Golden Age with passion and sensitivity.

The Overture in D and C Major, Darmstadt, is just exquisite. This is exciting music with great swellings and undertonings throughout.

I thoroughly enjoy baroque and this collection with its varying instrumental groupings highlighted and the variety of styles and genres is truly stimulating and relaxing to listen to. For the price, this is just an outstanding find.

Robert King and his Consort provide a fantastic recording catalog of such for us baroque lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Peaceful CD For These Very Troubled Times.......2002-01-03

This CD surprised me when I first listened to it. It is among the most beautiful and peaceful music I have ever listened to. The song, "Dear Father", written by Neil Diamond for the movie, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, is my absolute favorite on the entire CD. All songs on this CD are beautiful and it is a very good value for the money. It's nice to be surprised by a CD now and then. This album is very soothing and is wonderful when you need to unwind and want to relax. Great to listen to before bedtime or as you are dropping off to sleep. I recommend this CD for all considering the fact that we live in very troubled times since the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the USA.

4 out of 5 stars The Nature Of America: A Musical Impression.......2001-01-09

This is a very good sampler of contemporary American composers, weighted more towards those writing for the movie industry. The music is very relaxing, and is quite enjoyable to sit back and listen to. The tracks are generally quite recognizable. We purchased this initially as a gift for some French friends. But we enjoyed it so much, we ended up buying a copy for ourselves.

    3 out of 5 stars A Soothing CD.......2000-10-23

I found this cd to be one of my favorites to pull of the shelf when I am doing meditation or just in need of relaxing. Track 8 is my favorite. The strings are just beautiful and the melody heart warming and soothing at the same time. As much as I love the cd, I must give 3 stars because of the lack of nature sounds accompanied by the music. If you want a cd filled with the sounds of nature this may not be the one for you, however, if you simply wish a good cd with relaxing music then I would highly recommend this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

    5 out of 5 stars A touch of history...........2002-01-28

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

Tafelmusik (in 4 series) features uniquely diverse combinations of chamber instruments. There's nothing else like it in the Baroque literature. The pieces show sustained inspiration and never-failing harmonic and rhythmic twists. Their deliberate exploration of instrumental sonorities and combinations means that performance style and interpretation are very important in putting them over. Tastes will vary. Maybe this also helps account for the very different ratings by the previous reviewers!

Like Reviewer 1, I experienced intermittent audio problems and also skips in my set of the the First Series. The audio problem is ignored my ratings in the title. The opening Overture in E for 2 flutes has passages reminiscent of the more famous Suite in A for flute and strings. Here, however, the flutes indulge in all manner of clever and inventive "French" interactions with the strings, interspersed with full orchestra segments; the whole is delicately and deftly executed by the Orchestra of the Golden Age. If Reviewer 2 likes the Camerata Koln, I am not sure why he is down on this version, except perhaps preferring the more robust Reinhard Goebel style in preference to the very light touch of the ensemble formed by Robert Glenton (cello) in 1995.

It's well to remember that Telemann invented the quartet form (not the classical string quartet form whose origin is debated but often attributed to Haydn), much later. Telemann composed some 25 of these quartets, one of which, for flute, oboe, violin and cello (with continuo) is included here.

I admit I prefer living tradition style, which gives me more direct access to "absolute" music rather than having to project myself back into history. But I can't fault the sensitivity and precision with which the Golden Age ensemble performs. Then too, the NAXOS price is much lower than the competitive Deutsche Grammophon and other brands.

2 out of 5 stars Great performance - unfortunate audio quality.......2001-07-11

This disk sounds like it was recorded in my bedroom closet. I may be hypersensitive to such characteristics, but when I want to listen to music of this type I expect it to sound alive and bright -- not tired and hollow. Certainly the price is an impetus for impulse purchase... but you might want to pay more for, say, the recording of Telemann's "Water Music" done by Musica Antiqua Koln.

3 out of 5 stars Wake me after dinner.......2001-06-13

Georg Phillip Telemann wrote such wonderful, populist music. Such easy, flowing melodies were the mark of genius. But this stuff is just fluff -- background music for dinner, aptly titled "Musique de Table". After repeated listenings, I can't find anything important enough to review.

      5 out of 5 stars A Real Find........2000-04-10

I bought this disc out of curiosity. I had not really heard a lot of Telemann, and what I had heard had not really stuck with me. Nonetheless, as I grow more fond of Baroque, the combination of a favorable Grammophone review and the Naxos price pushed me beyond temptation. Bottom line: I love it and plan to get the other 3 installments ASAP. The music itself is of a very high quality, with an enjoyable lightness of touch and bounciness I did not expect. The performance and recording are very good. It seems Naxos' recording techniques improve with each new offering. If you like Baroque music, give this a try...at less than eight bucks it is an out and out bargain.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.
