Album Description
The original arrangements in Full Dimensional Stereo. Freddy Martin does for smooth dance music what Glen Gray does for Swing (see Eric #11506 & #11516). He takes the original arrangements of the themes of the classic bands from the 20s, 30s and 40s and turns them into spectacular stereo performances worthy of your home-theater sound system! 65 minutes of great music.

Customer Reviews:
Martin at his mellow best.......2007-06-01
This is great collection of Freddy Martin's prime years from 1933 to 1950 including his semi-classical and novelty hits. There are so many great selections here from the catchy "Bumble Boogie" and ""Sabre Dance Boogie" to the novelty ditties "Dingbat the Singing Cat" and "Rose O' Day". It ends with two of songster, Merv Griffin, big hits. This album is a winner! So get a copy and enjoy Freddy Martin at his best.

Customer Reviews:
Believe it or not, an important CD.......2001-01-12
Freddy Martin is, alas, largely forgotten today. He mostly did "sweet" recordings, many of them based on classical themes (and the best of which are included in this album). He is today best remebered for the song "Bumble Boogie" (included on this CD) which Walt Disney has kept alive. Few songs, though, have the impact in their heyday that "The Hut-Sut" song did. The "Hut-Sut" song was a nonesense song, but many of the people who heard GIs sing it all over the world didn't know that! "Lovely Bunch of Coconuts," and "Managua, Nicaragua" were also big hits (I spent much of the mid-eighties whistling "Managua Nicaragua" and wondering if the song would have a comeback if the U. S. directly intervened in the war against the Sandinistas). It would have been nice to have had his version of Chopin's "Heroic" Polonaise, which was the theme song of the Polish resistance during WWII, and for that reason brings tears to the eyes. Martin's was not a great jazz organization, but the individual performances of members of his orchestra are at times awe-inspiring. If you like big band music, you won't go wrong. And someday, somewhere, you'll catch yourself humming, "Hut-sut bralsen on the ritta-rah..."
Just one cut is worth the price.......2000-12-16
I bought this CD (along with "Classics and Boogie: the Original..."), just for the unbelievable rendition of the piano soloist Jack Fina, in dialogue with F.M.'s orchestra, of the "Bumble Boogie", based on Rimsky-Korsakoff's well-known piece: it was part of the Walt Disney's full-length cartoon movie "Melody Time" of 1948, and I had been looking for it since 1950! Except for the few introductory orchestral bars, it's all here with all its piano wizardry. Just this piece makes the purchase of this CD worthwhile.

Customer Reviews:
Pure Mervana (Merv with Freddy Martin)........2002-02-04
This chintzily-packaged but highly entertaining CD features, among other attractions, a young Merv Griffin singing five numbers with the Freddy Martin Orchestra in the early 1950s. The sound quality is decent, the source being for-radio-only recordings (I think that's the term), the kind of recordings the Hindsight label specializes in. In fact, I found a few of these very tracks on a Seeburg label 45-rpm record (extended play) which appears to have been designed as muzak-style background music! This means that in the 1950s at least some people shopped (or worked) to the sounds of Merv Griffin with Freddy Martin. Believe it or not.
Anyway, these tracks are exemplary middle-of-the-road big band music, all of them arranged by Bob Ballard, who is better known for his superb, if less than progressive, charts for Lawrence Welk. Ace pianists Barclay Allen and Murray Arnold tear up the keyboard in such semi-classical showstoppers as "Bumble Boogie," "Cumana," and "Slaughter on Tenth Aveue," all brilliantly performed and with nary a note out of place. Featured on six numbers, vocalist Merv Griffin is all mellowness, especially on "Hello Young Lovers," which he ends with a long, strongly sustained "own" ("a love of my ...") on the keynote as the band draws out the final cadence in a properly dramatic fashion. This is undoubtedly the CD's most sublime moment of Mervana.
The collection is rounded out by some charming novelty numbers and one of the most unswinging versions of "Ballin' the Jack" ever put on wax. It is worth keeping in mind that Martin's brand of big band music was every much a part of his day as the swingier music of Miller, Ellington, Dorsey, and Basie. And it was every bit as good. There's not much of Martin on CD, so buy this while it's still there.
