5 out of 5 stars Swingin' Strings.......2004-10-03

Johnny Frigo swings with a seeming effortlessness second only arguably to Count Basie.

5 out of 5 stars Time to acknowledge the man's talent........2002-03-02

As stated in a review by IAJRC (International Association of Jazz Record Collectors): "Remember that album by Grappelli and Menuhin? Grappelli got the Jazz, Menuhin got the sound. In Johnny Frigo's case, he got both."

He's the second oldest living Jazz violinist in this country and the world, and that's a fact. However, that's nothing compared to the fact he has two things that should put him on the top of his field: great sound and Swing. These made John unique and it's been too long for him not to be considered as a national treasure of this country.

Being a personal friend of John made me decide not to give any rate at all, for it might be considered as a biased rating. But I have to say that if you call yourself a Jazz fan, especially Jazz violin than you should get this album. You won't be sorry at all for spending some 15 bucks for this disc. By the way, I know there's five stars attached to this comment. The thing is Amazon won't allow me to leave the rate field blank. I got to put something so I thought 5 would do. But keep in your mind that there's nothing personal here, just a matter of technicality.

If you live in Chicago area or anywhere close to Chicago, try your best to catch him play live in any clubs. Don't mind what all the stuff Howard Reich's been writing about this man, just go and watch this man's talent.

5 out of 5 stars Stark, harsh, musical, out at the edge No Wave NYC trio.......2006-01-09

Do you know this band? If not, unfortunately, it appears you cannot sample this CD. Late 70's/early 80's band with Arto Lindsay on grating guitar, a Japanese woman on bass and occasional grating vocals (tho enjoyable verses Yoko style) and R. L. Crutchfield on drums. Part of the NYC No Wave scene. They appear on the amazing 4 band compilation No New York compilation lp/cd produced by Eno resulting in each band maybe recording their finest, most true material ever with JAMES CHANCE and the CONTORTIONS, TEENAGE JESUS and the JERKS (with LYDIA LUNCH doing her definitive grating guitar and lovely vocals) and MARS another band who only has, all together, about this many trax for reissue and, if it's possible, is even a bit more extreme than DNA.

Thanks for making this CD. It brings together virtually everything DNA did on their 2 7"s, their nice 12" and several compilation tracks as well as the No New York trax, I believe.

This band is not for sissys. If you want some sort of gentle pop music flee now. If you're adventurous and wanna withstand slashing guitar and a minimalist sound with vocals that aren't meant to sooth you to sleep, you might give this a try.

Those of us who have heard it know that we love it or others have dropped it like it was blowing up in their hands, I'm sure. This isn't hardcore punk. It can be called punk if you like because it existed concurrently with the growth of punk. But it most appropriately belongs in that special group of bands from that period known as NY No Wave.

It's funny because Arto Lindsay, a Brasilian, went on to do a number of solo albums with that sweet, gentle, soothing bossa nova music. There's occasional hints in some of his songs of a bit 'o grating but just hints, oddly, typically in his songs that are most hit like on his records. He also did an album, Aggregates 1-26, as a different group, the ARTO LINDSAY TRIO of music somewhat similar to this, in the same ballpark let's say but not as severe with the songs averaging one minute.

DNA delivers music that exists nowhere else. Their sound is their own. They staked out their place on the musical spectrum and it's way out there at the end of Western music. I imagine most punx would enjoy it though I can't be sure. I do. Comin' from hardcore punk rock it's a natural to enjoy this grating guitar, short songs and generally severe musical presentation. chrisbct@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars The long awaited definitive collection of studio & live trax.......2005-01-03

This cd includes nearly all the studio songs and some "choice" live ones (eventhough they are very lo-fidelity which makes it somewhat of a difficult listen yet keep in mind that this band along w/ most of the others of the "nyc no-wave era" were rarely documented live) the "A Taste of DNA" ep, tracks from Brian Eno's infamously produced "No New York" compilation, their first 7" are all here, plus tracks from a rare compilation called "forbidden fruit" that were also used in film soundtrack (if i'm not mistaken) also unreleased studio early versions of 'Detached,' '5:30' and 'Low' which were done by the original lineup w/ Robin Crutchfield on keyboards (pre-Tim Wright on bass). The sound quality of about half of the live tracks are on par with the "Last Live" at CBGB's recording on John Zorn's label.

DNA formed in 1978, Brazilian singer/guitarist Arto Lindsay formed a trio of non-musicians. Robin Crutchfield on keyboard & Ikue Mori on drums. Crutchfield left, around this time bassist Tim Wright had just left the Cleveland influential punk band Pere Ubu, and relocated to NYC and joined DNA. They've had a fairly large impact on the experimental/avant underground fringe rock scene that has been in a recent resurgance (i.e. Errase Errata) and had been very influential in more widely known indie/alt bands (i.e. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth), also the band Blonde Redhead, who obtained their name from a DNA song title.

What is missing on this is two studio reworkings of 'Detached' and 'Blonde Redhead' that appear on the soundtrack to the film 'Downtown 81' which pretty much stars NYC artist Basquiat, and a cameo w/ Blondie's Deb Harry. This film is also a must for DNA fans (it is available on DVD) as it also features very nice footage of them live in the studio performing the two mentioned songs in their entirety (eventhough it is less then 4 minutes!). I would give this cd a 5 if those 2 tracks were included as in my opinion it is the highest quality recordings that i've heard from the band.

5 out of 5 stars A Ugly, Wonderful Mess.......2004-11-15

Dna, along with the other bands at the forefront of the late-70's no-wave movement, were less about structure and songs than the execution of punishing noise. While Mars took the mini-movement to the peaks of almost unlistenable chaos, making James Chance and Lydia Lunch seem almost conventional by comparison, Dna were perhaps the next most challenging. Arto Lindsey wails in something that's beyond singing. It's release, and his voice moves all over the place along with his sporadic guitar playing which never actually comes to play an actual note. On this record, all of Dna's recorded comes together for a very intriguing, yet hard-to-digest listen. It deserves 5 stars for the studio material along (their first 7", the No New York compilation tracks, and their EP), but even the poorly recorded demos and live tracks have their charms. For music recorded years ago that will never loose its edge, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Modern, Deep Worship.......2000-11-20

Terry's music contains the depth of reverence toward Jesus that some think is missing from portions of todays worship. As well, not for one minute is he dry as some might think of hymns. Terry has a talented voice that determinably reflects God and not his own ability for inflection, reflecting charactor instead of personallity. There is a description in one of these two albums (now combined) of God birthing something in Terry Clark's heart about a 'new thing' in music, I paraphrase "If you will focus on me," said the Lord "I will do a new thing in your music." I knew Terry's music long before I every read that story and have exceptional faith that he heeded God's words. If you have looked for depth of worship, for awe and reverence of God, timing that insists on contemplation of your words as you sing along, Terry's music can provide that Holy atmosphere with which we should always approach our King and enough swing in the sound to know the artist must be in love too, with the God you worship.

Each of these collections are worth the price so it is like getting one for free. Terry Clark is one of those singers that I can't forget and I have been looking for his music on CD for a long time. I found other good information about terry clark on newportrecords.com and other Christian artists as well. This is a definite buy.

5 out of 5 stars Physically Mezmerizing.......2006-12-26

The energy i felt listening to this series the first time was very similar to what i felt when i became certified for Reiki III, i asked my local Reiki Master about DNA Activation and he said he'd tried it on his own through meditation and he highly recommended it.

The first time i tried the CDs, i laid down and listened to all four CDs with headphones on (over 3 hours of music). Before listening to the CDs i fixed my intent to "Heal and Activate my DNA, raise my vibration, expand my heart and awareness".

Immediately i started vibrating and this lasted the entire time, nerves in my face and feet started twitching uncontrollably (though not at the same time and not for very long, just long enough to let me know there was a definite correlation between the music and my physical body).

Vibrations and tingling occurred at different places in my body and at different times but were strongest around my Heart Chakra. At one point my head felt like it became very dense and heavy, if felt like my head was buried deep in my pillow and grounded to the earth, visually i saw colored lights and towards the end of the 4th CD, i felt waves of energy flowing from my head to my feet. When i got up my entire body continued to vibrate, especially noticeable in my upper lip where the nerves were twitching, again this did not last very long.

I listen to all four CDs in a row at bedtime, each CD is roughly 45 minutes long and i'm usually out cold before the first one ends but the manual says it's fine to sleep to this music and the effects still register. I hear something new and find it is a different experience each time i listen.

2 out of 5 stars Running Out Of Ideas.......2006-08-09

I am not going to say this CD is terrible, its not. But if you are a fan who heard the first 8 1/2 Souvenirs album Happy Feet in the first version (out of three+), suffered through the remakes, then followed the band to Souvonica, it should be glaringly apparent that the band is running out of ideas.
Oh, the music on Souvonica is well-played. There is no doubt as to the virtuosity of the band. Its just that with Souvonica, 8 1/2 Souvenirs offers fans the same old same old but with diminished song quality. The nouveau swing craze is over. After listening to Souvonica and comparing it to what came before, its easy to see why. There's only so much mileage a band can get out of Paolo Conte and Serge Gainsbourg covers and imitations.
So I would say that if it is the first Happy Feet CD that brings you here with high expectations, then avoid Souvonica. On the other hand, if Souvonica is your first taste of the band, then you should try to obtain the first version of Happy Feet to hear what you are really missing.

5 out of 5 stars Have a blast at Club Souvenir with Souvonica!.......2002-06-19

OK, ladies and germs. Welcome to Club Souvenir, Paris's foremost cafe. We got a real swell show for you tonight, so get into dance gear, or sit back and have drinks, because this is likely to be an all-nighter.

Our band tonight is 8-1/2 Souvenirs, and they'll be playing songs from their Souvonica album. Remember Happy Feet? Well, they're still happy, and so will your feet when this party's done.

To give you a preview, their set will consist of swing, upbeat jazz and accordion-backed songs, like "Off White." If you want to dance, this is where to warm up. Then go on to "Cognac" with white keys that dance in one place and pound in other places, accompanied by quick pace rhythm guitar. And then to the title track with some Italian vocals.

"Tango Lunatico" features Juliana Sheffield's haunting vocals and sounds nothing like a tango. Keep listening for her, folks. This lady's gives this dimly lit club its atmosphere.

How low can you go? Find out with "Paris," which gets a little funky with lower octave tickling of those ivories.

Vocalist Kelly Willis (someone tell me if she's that country singer?) sings in "Absentee Rag" and I'm reminded of something out of a 1940's or 1950's Hollywood musical.

"Pass' Temp" features bandmember Olivier Giraud on vocals and this accordion-backed number could belong at home on Happy Feet, as a twin of "No Lo Visto."

If you want a breather, they'll play "Amarcord," a nice romantic number, which will take you back a French provincial village or a ride in a horse and carriage down the cobblestone streets of Paris or some other city. Think of that movie Mon Oncle. And yes, Miss Juliana Sheffield will ride with you with those vocals of hers. She's a charmer, I tell ya.

Things'll get more floor-worthy with "Shut The Door." It's about boy and girl sitting down in a cafe like this one, maybe, getting acquainted. Maybe some of you couples are in the audience. Dig that chorus, "I want to be in Paris, the city of lights and love."

"Serpent Charmer" is an accordion and piano number that'll close this set unless you want the band to do encores, which they'll happy to do.

OK, enough yammering from me. Now let's get this party started.

5 out of 5 stars Great followup! I want more!.......2001-08-21

After three years of jumping from HAPPY FEET to TWISTED, SOUVONICA remains an incredible collection of music that shows a higher-production standard than HAPPY although it somehow loses a bit of the "fresh edge". Still, every track has me tapping my toes and snapping my fingers. This seems to be a more even, more uniform-in-quality collection of songs. Perhaps not as fresh or fun as the best of HAPPY, but it also lacks HAPPY's slow points or dragging songs. A great collection that I wish was not out-of-print.

5 out of 5 stars 81/2 are the jivin'ist gypsies around!.......1999-08-28

Well written and well performed, this band is smooth like silk. Their music creates an atmosphere of its own. I liked Souvonica even better than I did Happy Feet, and I adored Happy Feet! 81/2 are the jivin'ist gypsies around!

In August 1998, a bomb exploded in a shopping area in Omagh, Northern Ireland, killing 29 people and injuring 200 more. One of the fatal victims was a 12-year-old boy named Shaun McLaughlin, who wrote a precociously poignant antiwar poem entitled "Across the Bridge of Hope." This tragic irony is, sadly, a recurring theme in the saga of Northern Ireland's violence, so it wasn't difficult to compile 12 songs, from some of Ireland's most famous musicians, that triumphantly honor those who suffered or died in Omagh. The CD opens with actor Liam Neeson somberly reciting Seamus Heaney's poem The Cure at Troy and winds down as he reads the album's namesake prose. Sinead O'Connor croons proudly and reverently atop a scuffling, soft-shoed hip-hop rhythm in "Chiquitita." Boyzone and the Corrs' contributions cast off any dismissible pop stardom in this context, with songs that sweetly honor their lost countrymen and -women. The gentle wake of Van Morrison's acoustic version of "The Healing Game" pacifies a grieving soul. U2's "Please" is direct, angered, and entirely devastating. Throughout, the songs embody the inextinguishable spirit of the Irish--vivacious, stalwart, enduring, faithful. For every fire, there is always the rain, and this CD is a magnificent cloud. --Beth Massa

4 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2004-06-21

I discovered Christine Glass via a sampler album in the late 1990s, which had the song "Waterfall" on it. I knew immediately I had to get her albums! The first Christine Glass album I got was her album previous to this one, "Human." Christine Glass is one of my favorite female vocalists, so I really enjoyed that album because of that. But the album was a bit too sleepy for me.

I like "Love And Poverty" much better. It has the same general style as "Human," which is acoustic and electric guitars played in a gentle way, but "Love And Poverty" uses more electric guitars and the album is more uptempo than her previous one. That's not to say it's an album of fast tempos; it still has a relaxing, laidback sound to it, made even more soothing by her beautiful soprano, whispery vocals. Also, her vocal melodies tend to be more of an ethereal nature, which is also something perfect for my tastes.

The last song on the album is striking. It's a break away from the electric-acoustic guitar sound with solo vocals, to a Renaissance kind of sound with vocal harmonies accompanied by cello. Interesting!

I am so disappointed that Christine Glass's solo albums never took off because they are definitely beautiful albums. She is now performing with her husband, Mark Byrd, in Glassbyrd, but she seems to have more of a background role in that entity, which is disappointing. I like to hear her voice front and center. I also enjoy the song she sings on Andy Hunter's album "Exodus."

I have listened to this album a lot; it is excellent! I like every song on the album. Perfect for a peaceful sunny day in summer.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for any Alternative Lover!.......2000-03-08

Christine Glass is an awesome singer and the perfect antidote to anyone looking to get away from angry rock. Unlike Monique Powell (who i'm a big fan of) or Sarah McLaughan, she doesn't growl but shows a soothing quietness in her voice that reflects her emotions. Lyrically, she has some beautiful stuff (try listening to the first track) Christine Glass is an underrated diva!

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST of '99!.......1999-11-15

Wow...is this cd being ignored? If so, it's a total crime because this cd is outstanding. It betters Christine's '97 debut. "Love and Poverty" sounds very much like Common Children's "Delicate Fade" because of the production of Marc Byrd (and Glass sang on that cd also). I am just totally falling for the BIG melodies on this disc...if you are considering buying this cd or investigating it further I strongly recommend you do so.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite CD!.......1999-08-21

Christine Glass is my favorite artist. Although I do not have this exact cd I have one called "Human" with most of the same songs on it including her hit, "Crazy All Around". Almost all of her songs are as good if not much better than that one! Christine has a beautiful voice that she uses in a wonderful way to sing powerful, uplifting songs about God. I would recommend her to anyone looking for awesome Christian rock. I can't wait for her to come out with another CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Vocals? i dont think so.......2000-07-27

THIS BAND RULES THEIR VOCALS ROCKTHEIR GUITARS ARE HEAVY AS A BIG ROCK THEIR DRUMS ARE GOOD AND FASTI GIVE IT 6 STARS

4 out of 5 stars Good Guitars, Heavy Drums, Good Message, Bad Vocals.......2000-06-03

First of all I learned about them from this christian magazine and they compared them to P.O.D. etc. so I thought they would be good. Then I went to the christian store and sampled "Essence of the Game." At first I thougt it was awesome, their guitar sound was just like KoRn's and their drums were really heavy and dark although they were still christian. But I ddn't really listen to it that much, I figured it would be good. So I bought that along with P.O.D. and then listened to it at home. I later became...well...not impressed. The lead singer, I think his name is Rudy, well he needs to take some singing classes. He sounds alot like a wannabe rapper. His voice isn't loud enough, he "raps" too slow, and his voice box just isn't the thing that you really want to listen to. But besides that they are a really good band. I gave them 4 stars cause everything about them is good except for the singing like I said.

But I recently bought their new album, "Trying Not To Try" and the singer has improoved alot so thats a good thing. But overall, buy the CD if you like POD and bands like that.

5 out of 5 stars Very excellent.......2000-03-31

Essence of the Game is an outstanding album. It is a VERY interesting album of hip-hop/ rap-core. Musically, .Rod Laver is not only talented, but passionate. Spiritually, they are very strong. I was able to go to one of their concerts, in Amarillo, TX, and was blown away. They are so focused spiritually that they can't help but put on a GREAT show. I don't know if I'll see many performances done better than theirs'. Very Good. Big Time!

2 out of 5 stars Gets kinda old........1999-12-30

The problem with Rod Laver is that they get really old really fast. I think the main problem is that the singer TRIES to be a rapper, and it seems as if he is competing against the hardcore music that is playing.Instead of trying to sing hip-hop along with the hard core. Another low point is that there are like 6 songs on here that are just pure rap....and those are horrible. The only reason why I gave it 2 stars is because there are some songs that are pretty hard core. However as I said....the singer kinda messes it up. If you want AWESOME rap-hardcore get Seventh Vision or P.O.D.

3 out of 5 stars Looking forward to another.......1999-12-17

This is one of the coolest bands that I've ever seen in concert! They have soooo much energy and the guitar player is pscyco! I don't like the spoken word track or the "ebony and ivory" song, but the rest of the album is way cool. My favorite is "franconia rd." Buy this cd!

4 out of 5 stars BEFORE MADONNA BECAME THE LEGEND!.......2007-02-01

i agree with the reviewers. a madonna fan should have this one. your collection is not complete without "in the beginning" or "pre-madonna" or "beginnings 1980-1981." actually, these are all the same album, 9 (or 10) tracks recorded before she was able to ink a deal with sire records in 1982. madonna and her friend stepehen bray recorded these demos and presented them to record producers but were turned down (and look who's laughing now!).

yes, this is the real thing - not the trashy otto von wernher (whatever) songs that could have been curious collections if otto did not dip his finger in the original versions.

in this cd, stephen tells the story of madonna in his own perspective and how they were able to collect such a body of work. not just for the curious ones, this album includes the ORIGINAL versions of everybody and burning up (her early tracks), PLUS her supposedly first single, "aint no big deal." (although i agree that the reggie lucas-produced track that came out in 1983 really sounds better).

aside from these, you hear what madonna sounded during that time, and did she sound GREAT with songs like "crimes of passion" (an early into the groove rewrite) and "laugh to keep from crying" (very original), the original version of "stay" (the re-produced track from like a virgin are actually TWO songs: "stay" and "don't you know."

while "stay" was good, i like "don't you know better." it has a groove reminiscent of that period, and yet, it can jive with the new madonna sounds (jump, hung up, music).

"pre-madonna", looking back, is actually madonna's early and original immaculate conception. it somewhat predicted what she was to become (a superstar!) by the songs she earlier recorded.

just one comment: i hope this would again be re-released with a much better album art to give justice to madonna's stature. and maybe, a more complete and longer background story. that's the stuff legends are made of. and here, we're talking about the one and only madonna.

long live the queen....

4 out of 5 stars Actually 3.5 stars .......2005-04-01

Well, there are 6 out of the 9 tracks on here that are good. This is a re-release of the Pre-Madonna album and the cover picture is just amazing! Being a Madonna fan, I had to pick this up. I was not dissapointed, but the other 3 tracks are just mediocre.

Good Songs:
* Everybody ('97)
* Ain't No Big Deal ('97)
* Burning Up
* Everybody ('81)
* Ain't No Big Deal ('81)
* Stay ('81)

Stay is my personal favourite. Crimes Of Passion, Don't You Know and Laugh To Keep From Crying are just okay tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Same as pre-madonna without the extra track.......2003-05-23

I own the cd pre-madonna which was released by a company called harmony. This cd is the exact same except it doesn't have the track ain't no big deal 97 edit version. Also the songs are listed in different order than on pre-madonna. This cd is really great for madonna collectors. It's basically a blue print to her first album. A couple of the songs didn't make it to her first album but they should have. One of my favorites is crimes of passion which reminds of get into the groove. Ain't no big deal the 81 version is also awesome. Every song is great. As everyone else has been saying stay away from madonna the early years. That cd is very sorry. Someone gave me the cd & I swear it deserves to be burned. I only listened to it for 30 seconds & that was enough for me. I have had it for 3 yrs now & I haven't picked it up since.

5 out of 5 stars Not an imitation. It's the real THANG!.......2002-09-25

So many imitation CD's have come out with supposed Madonna vocals before her success. Actually, a lot of them are the same CD with a different cover. This CD, however, truly is Madonna's voice with the original mixes and some updates. It comprises of many of her demos that she used to get a record deal.

If you have followed her career from the get-go, you are in for a treat! You will hear the original versions of "Stay" and "Burning Up." Different arrangements, intensities, etc. And the songs aren't bad! Avoid anything by Otto Von Werner (or whatever his name is). This is the CD with the real deal.

A great album that chronicles the evolution of a superstar and media queen! A must-have for fans that will not disappoint.

3 out of 5 stars surprisingly good.......2001-03-22

If you think you know the early Madonna, you don't.

"In The Beginning" is a surprisingly solid collection of Madonna's early songwriting with partner Stephen Bray. Unlike the trademark "Minnie Mouse on helium" singing style of her first two albums, "In The Beginning" showcases a deep-voiced, sultry Madonna that will make you do a double-take at first listen.

Some of these songs made the cut to Madonna's first album... but in radically different forms. "Burning Up 1981" is a far cry from the familiar album and single version from 1983. Here you get a glimpse of what might have happened if Madonna had pursued a career in rock rather than dance music. "Everybody" is presented in two different versions here: the original dance version (not too much of a stretch from the familiar album version) and a 1997 reggae (yes, reggae) remix that Madonna probably would not have commissioned.

Getting back to the rock 'n' roll Madonna... "Laugh To Keep From Crying" could well be this album's standout song. Like "Burning Up 1981," "Laugh..." is guitar-driven rock. Not heavy metal by any means, but 80's girl-group rock. Somewhat like The Bangles, The Pretenders, or the Go-Gos. Lets you know that, had she wanted, Madonna could have been a rocker: she had the attitude, and the deeper voice she sings in here sounds strong, confident, and very effective.

The rest of the collection consists of additional unreleased tracks ("Crimes Of Passion," "Ain't No Big Deal" and "Don't You Know") that sound like the beginning of the 80's New York dance sound of Madonna's familiar early works. "Crimes of Passion" sounds like a preliminary version of "Into The Groove" (completely different lyrics, of course, but the musical arrangement has the same feeling as ITG).

If you're a hardcore Madonna fan, "In The Beginning" will show you an interesting dichotomy between the dancefloor diva that she became versus the rocker she easily could have been.
