5 out of 5 stars "It's twew! It's twew!".......2006-08-09

(4.5/5 stars) I would have to agree with previous reviewers that Dietrich shows more singing ability here than in latter year English recordings when she toured with Burt Bachrach. In those recordings, she sounded very much like Lili von Schtupp, Madeline Kahn's merciless parody of Dietrich in "Blazing Saddles." Though still not great, she has better range on most of the recordings in this collection. She shows great instinct for pausing and doesn't over sing the songs. She is at her best when singing sultry torch songs with "come hither" lyrics, such as on "Peter." As a person who speaks German, yet lives in a country that rarely appreciates contributions from "Old Europe," I appreciate having recordings like this available. The only gripe I have about this collection is the inclusion of "Good For Nothing," which seems out of place as a novelty comedy song among standards and love songs. Aside from that, great.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2005-01-19

it's a wonderful collection for the most part, but there's a track or two that grate on my nerves, especially 'Peter'

I can't be certain why, it's just one of those things...

I loved how this album had both the german and english versions of 'lili marlene' as 1)it is beautiful in both 2)they have very different sounds, one is mournful, the other more energetic and 3)it's nice to know what she's singing about ;) (don't speak german...wanted to take it, but my school only offers french, spanish, and italien...)

Would have liked a few of her more lively songs also though, to balance out the sound. This recording's great to cry to and all, but Marlene Dietrich also did several livelier songs, such as 'boys in the backroom,' 'maybe i'll come back,' and 'lola' which would have added alot to this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars As renowned jazz critic points out..........2004-01-01

She sounds more relaxed and not "flat" when singing in her own German language. It is nice to hear her singing standards in German, you regognize the melodies, and she sounds so natural and her vocie doesn't sound clunky but sexy, sultry, and romantic. Firedwald autor of the great book Jazz Singing writes some intriging liner notes. Best song here might Be Surrey With The Fringe On Top in german! Exellent caberet singing that is sure to please! Also one of the prettiest versions of Time On My Hands, I mean she sings it almost as touchingly as another forgotten crooner Russ Columbo!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dietrich Shines in intimate digital reissue.......2001-05-09

For those who are not familiar with Dietrich, this is a great first album. Several of her most famous standards along with a few surprises make this a stong overview of the Blue Angel's 50's sound. While few singers are brave enough to tackle the Piaf/Dietrich cabaret repertory, serious fans of this genre would be well advised to obtain Ute Lemper's "Illusions" album. Dietrich sounds wonderful crooning these standards and really owns them due to the arrangments and the vocal placement in the recording. It really is a shame that we can't hear her full glory on modern equipment. There are times when the quality of the originals shows through the careful engineering of the CD, but overall, this is one of the best samples of this period. The softly intimate arrangements are well suited to Dietrichs vocal power and interpretations. Dietrich IS a singer, but she had a strongly person style and crooned through her songs without showing vocal strain by attempting repertory that was outside of her comfort zone.. We should respect the low female voice for what it is.. seductive, gentle and coaxing, and infinitely feminine. Dietrich is this in spades.

5 out of 5 stars Dietrich at her Best.......2001-02-12

This is my second purchase of this CD; it's actually a melding of two of her old LP's. The German work on here was on an LP, and the other work on another. I loved the German LP until I heard the CD with its improved sound quality. I don't speak German, but I love her work in German. "Time On My Hands" sounds so much better by her in German than I've ever heard it in English! It's a shame the Amazon sampler doesn't include her rendition of "La Vie en Rose". Somehow, it comes across as much softer, more intimate than the matchless Piaf. It's my second-favorite version behind Piaf's. I'm least attracted, and listen least, to her 'updated' works such as the song with Clooney on here. It seems a little too 'sanitized' for me. Whether Dietrich was a singer or not will probably always be a subject for debate. What is beyond argument, however, is her ability to take a song and make that song uniquely hers. Who'd have ever thought that she would tackle "Surrey With a Fringe on Top"?

I recommend, still, that if you can own only one of Dietrich's CD's, this is the one because of the beautiful German recordings. A great price, too!

5 out of 5 stars Master of his leauge.......2005-12-02

Al DiMeola is definitely the one of the best guitar players of all time and there is no question about it. Unfortunately a lot of Americans won't even know him even though he has followers watching him here in US and buying his CDs, I believe he is much more known abroad. Al never stayed cliche with his music he explored and took chances by following his heart. This is also one of his great albums it was nice to hear his electric fusion guitar again. Comparing Al to Santana is very rediculus, Santana just an another commercial guitar player, Al is different he is a virtuoso a grand master guitar artist, and that's that. Great album educated music for people who understands high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars Yin and Yang.......2005-11-09

I am sure this album will raise brows in both camps of fans. It requires some thinking outside the box. For some of us, this box is narrow. I remember vividly one guy who claimed "Another brick in the wall" was a good disco dance. He was into Beethoven, mostly, and the rest of music was a big blob of goo without much shape. So, if "The rite of strings" is your Bible, you might be reluctant to make steps toward "Hey hop la la lei". And it's a terrible shame if you won't. Personally, I loved the album. Al's solo in "If I'll get a chance" stands high in my world, just for the penetrating soul of it, something so free and emotional that it hurts... like only true inspiration can. I've been missing that in Al's works lately. I admit he is not necessarily comfortable with the role of brasuca (have you seen the German video of their live appearance?), because Al is a brilliant surgeon general, *not* Santana. However, his reserved demeanor was the right recipe for me, I liked his intelligent precision in the middle of fiesta... Yin and Yang, temple and bazaar, the architectural beauty and a secret Russian soul. There is so much life in this combination. Cosmopolitan life, that is, where calls for purity of gender are not welcome, and badmouthing by the hardcore fan[atic]s is only regretful and pitiful. Walk away if you can't accept the form; just like Glazunov walked out of his student's performance... and missed the rising star of Sergei Prokofiev. Here's Leonid now, and he is darn good.

1 out of 5 stars weaker than karaokee.......2005-11-02

I was misslead from Al Di Meola name on the cover and bought the cd
from Viena airport in a hurry. When I played it at home I got ashamed from my choice. It sounds so week like Modern talking or
like karaokee on a beach with Michael Bolton songs.Just
listen the Next Generation of Gary Burton and you can feel the real
music world.I am sorry but AL should have put his name onlyin the cd book next to all guests of the project, because now he is making
favor to Leonid on the back of trustfull fans.

5 out of 5 stars Open Your Ears!!!.......2005-09-09

First of all, it is evident that this album is Agutin's with Di Meola as a guest. HELLO!! Di Meola did not write any of the compositions, so where do you get off saying that he is going backwards??? In playing??? Try taking a listen to his last albums "Flesh on Flesh" or "The Grande Passion" and the intricacy in his playing and compositions. He's done nothing but grown as an artist and has reached levels that obviously surpass, "your boy", Santana. As for this album, I wouldn't call it pop by today's standards. It's more of an Adult Contemporary. And it's definitely far from the Santana thing. IT'S BETTER!! Di Meola's solos throughout the songs give it so much life and seasoning. Very cool album!

3 out of 5 stars Al Di Santana.......2005-08-22

When i saw the album release on his website i thought it was a jazz album with another jazz musician "Leonid Agutin" but i was way wrong, when i first listened i was very disapointed.

First of all, Al Di Meola is not a pop guy, i think he is 100 times better when he picks the ovation and plays acoustic, i dont like his electric sound either, but mainly he plays jazz not pop (for those of you who are not familiar with his music), so when i first listened to this i thought it was another Santana feat thing.

Also there are some songs that sounds like Meola (only the guitar), like "Tango" but incorporate pop rythms, so i dont think the whole album sounds like Santana per se, but that was my first impresion, and it was not a good impresion cause i always liked his playin, and admired his technique and sound.

The licks are not part of what Meola's has shown over the years, if you really know his work with the guitar trios and other great albums he has like World Sinfonia I, and Elegant Gypsy you will notice that he sounds more like Santana. If you want to listen to the real Al Di Meola, i would recomend those two albums, and the 4 trio albums, 3 with paco de lucia and john maclaughin and 1 with larry coryel and bireli lagrene, all of them are great (if you like jazz-fusion).

As far as talkin about Leonid Agutin i have to stay shut, cause i dont really knew this guy, and the first time i listened to him was in this album, but i personally dont think he sounds like Sting. I read in a website that he was "one of the best jazz musicians in his country" but who knows, if i run a website i can say that im the best musician in the world.

I didnt expect a guy like meola that has play with all those GREAT guitar players, and has develop a technique around jazz and improvisation to come out with an album like this at this moment, maybe 15 or 20 years before i would say "the man gotta eat" but now is like walkin backwards.
