5 out of 5 stars Ron Wood up close, personal, & at his best.......2004-07-14

With Rolling Stones' guitarist Ron Wood's drug and alcohol problems prominent in many recent stories about the band's 2002 -2003 tour, and Wood's own very uneven performances during that tour--based on three shows I attended in Boston and NY, he skated from focused, brilliant, even dazzling (on "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," Happy," and numerous other superb performances), to desultory, inaudible in the mix, and at one Boston show, visibly not playing for half a dozen songs in a row--I was not optimistic about his newest solo album, recorded prior to his 2002 detox.
Remarkably, "Not For Beginners" is a return to the more organic and distinctive form Wood showed on his early albums with Rod Stewart (the Mercury label classics issued from 1969 through 1974,especially "GasolineAlley," "Never A Dull Moment," and "Every Picture Tells a Story,")and his concurrent tenure with that great British band, Faces. Wood's musicianship, especially his extraordinary and highly individual slide work, was noteable for it's sensitivity to the singer (usually Stewart or Ronnie Lane)--it might be witty ("It's All Over Now,"), other times somehow both loose and detailed, with a rare ear (in a supposed hard rocker) for emotional nuance("Jo's Lament," Dylan's "Only A Hobo", the instrumental "Jerusalem,"), with a jagged edge even at it's most lyrical. Of course, he be best known for the dense, slashing "That's All You Need," and "Stay With Me," deploying massive chordal sheets of slide-as-lead guitar.
This new CD finds Wood in the company of old (Dylan, Ian McLagan) and new (Kelly Jones) friends, and it cuts far deeper than those who've only seen Wood mugging on stage might expect. The sometimes acoustic, alway organic album has a notable bittersweet aspect. There are some gorgeous melodies, an overall aura of melancholy and sometimes (as on the Byrds' "Rock and Roll Star) anger. The title is appropriate, for this is a man who has lived the highs and lows and more recently, appears to have been listening and looking inward and around himself after the excesses of the past decades, and the music he has crafted shows genuine emotional range and depth, with some songs expressing an uncomfortable but powerful mix of delicacy and pain. The lyrics are not always quite as eloquent as the music (including Wood's ravaged vocals), but they are blunt, generous, and plainspoken. He is not, after all, Leonard Cohen. The "feel" is loose, lilting at times, swinging in the natural way one finds on Faces and Stones recordings ("Sweet Virginia"), rocking hard on only a few of the tracks. The songs stick in the mind and heart after only a couple of plays, and I can only hope Wood is able to bring his revived talents into the studio for next Stones album. Surely he has not, on the evidence of "Not For Beginners," lost it, even if he is a bit ragged around the edges.
Lovers of fine, layered guitar playing in the British folk/rock/blues tradition: this is a collection of songs that express an appreciation for those haunted memories that give a renewed awareness of the transitory nature of love and life --with that special, distinct edge one associates with Wood, and the Stones-- give this a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!! Worth the 2 week wait!!!.......2002-01-04

Ronnie Wood's first solo album in nearly ten years is a true family affair. Both his son and daughter appear on the record either singing or playing guitar. Some of the tracks are instrumental pieces including the final track "King of Kings" written by Bob Dylan. Dylan plays guitar on the track and also on another instumental piece entitled "Interfere". A cover of "Rock n' Roll Star" also appears on the album. My favorite track on the album is "Whadd'ya Think".

5 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Masterpiece from the man himself.......2001-05-11

Should Marilyn Manson continue with his work or should he stop?? The answer is yes!! With the great work of Antichrist Superstar and the following of Mechanical Animals from a gothic style of playing to glam rock now comes a new era, a new concept of music by adding the both elements of gothic and glam rock that gives you Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death). You are not going to expect what you are going to discover in this cd

Highlights from the disc are, "GodEatGod", "The Love Song", the current single "Disposable Teens", "Target Audiance", "Cruci-Fiction In Space", "Burning Flag", "Coma Black", "Valentines" Day, and "King Kill 33º". This UK version cd comes with the Nobodies (Acoustic Version) which sounds as good as the original version or maybe better ..you just for yourself + a two postcard set of collectable gamepieces which is a must for every Manson fan.

Definitely recommended, give it a listen and if some of the lyrics push you off...realize that you need to read the lyrics in context to the storyline rather than literally.

This is a brilliant album from a brilliant band.....Stop thinking about it and buy it NOW!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Heathen Single.......2003-12-17

The five stars are clearly for single status. This is in no way an album, and when you look at buying a single, you understand that it isn't an album.
That being said, I think this is a great single. Five tracks, all different, only one of them (Slow Burn)on Heathen itself. Pretty much what we're getting here is stuff that could have mad the "Toy" album, and well, I hope that one day that album comes out, but until then, it's single buying times, and this single is worth your money.
I personally think Shadow Man is a great song, perhaps my favorite of the single. Go get it.

4 out of 5 stars 4 great songs, one re-make.......2003-05-25

I love Wood Jackson, Shadow Man, & When the Boys Come Marching Home These 3 songs are mellow & slow, but excellent Bowie songs. Very much in the Heathen mood. His voice sounds great. 3 must-have songs for Bowie fans. The last track You've got a Habit of Leaving is a remake from Pinups I think. Doesn't do much for me. And of course Slow Burn is good.

5 out of 5 stars ::sigh:: Toy: What could have been!.......2003-02-27

This is brilliant: Bowie at his very, very best. His voice has never been better than on the title track, and the bonus songs from the discarded "Toy" only make the Bowie fan wistful for what seems to be a lost masterpiece.

Mark Plati, find a way to leak all of Toy online! ; )

4 out of 5 stars Worth Getting, but not quite 5 stars.......2003-01-25

Excepting the song Slow Burn which is on the Heathen cd (and a real classic), the other songs are interesting or pretty good. The standout is You've Got a Habit of Leaving -- it should have been on Heathen.

    5 out of 5 stars Memorable Burn(s) by Bowie.......2002-08-31

The great thing import singles from non-pop artist is that instead of giving you remixes they opt for previously unreleased tracks. David Bowie s Slow Burn , the song which features a screechy guitar by Pete Townshed, is the first single from Bowie s Heathen . With rock guitar combined with Bowie s soulful vocal and agonizing lyrics, this song is a classic. Four non-album tracks follow and all of them are mournful and melancholy. The object of ridicule, Woody Jackson , is a very sympathetic character and Bowie s whispering vocal makes it a very worthy album track. It does appear on the Japanese edition of Heathen . Shadow Man and When the Boys Come Marching Home are also standout works. The fifth track is worth the price of the import alone. You ve got A Habit Of Leaving is punk rock with old R&B crooning and alternative rock sensibility. It s a pseudo twisted love song with a rousing jam session after the all too short lyrical section of the song are over. Unfortunately, Bowie is not one the musicians on this track but his upbeat vocal through this bitter song leave their impression. For those wanting yet another companion disc to Heathen (that is, assuming you own the American special edition of this disc or the Japanese import), this should tide you over til the next single (hopefully, Cactus ).

Don't get me wrong...I really dig Lloyd's stuff and I have every album. And it is a forgivable sin for Lloyd to venture into the land of strange experimentation. I'm not holding a grudge. If you are a lloyd cole fan, you'll want to stay away from this CD. I think this music is his attempt to write film scores, or write music to nap to, or something like that. If you're looking for melody, you won't find it here. This is Lloyd in New England writing new age stuff with the help of a computer and some recording software. While the recent "Etc" is very listenable, Plastic Wood is something that you'll end up selling on eBay for a buck. Sorry, Lloyd. It just ... Still love ya, though!
