Album Description
OK horn fans, here it is
one the world's esteemed chamber groups teams up with one of the world's most storied horn sections for a CD that is-literally and figuratively-a blast! This recording is by any measure a virtuoso performance; these nine guys, all gifted in their own right, combine their talents to create an end result that is nothing short of breathtaking. From commissioned works to clever arrangements, the American Horn Quartet and the Horns of the New York Philharmonic tear through this music with a verve and flair rarely heard these days. In short, if you're a fan of the horn, you must have this recording!
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Horn Album.......2006-03-27
The hornists are simply fantastic. Many segments of the music thrill me, nearly take my breath away. Although many pieces represent their diverse skills I would love to have a presentation of more of the fanfare type pieces, the type which show the glory and power of the horn. Love the Ewazen piece. Love the Irish pieces. Thought the recording was a little muffled. Had to turn my stereo up too loud to get the full effect. Over all one great horn album.

Farewell to Red Castle.......2004-01-11
Take 9 is the best CD I own. My favorite song is the second on the track. Farewell to Red Castle. It's the most incredible peice, especially with 9 horns playing it. It is fun and exciting along with slow and beautiful. it's a great representation of the entire collection of Take 9's songs. wOOt!
An Awesome Recording.......2003-09-09
This is an awesome recording combining 9 great players. The music is beautiful, but still showy, an excellent combination for this group of horns. Overture to Candide is incredible, and the Grand Canyon Suites is one of the greatest horn recording I have ever heard. This recording belongs in any horn players library.

Customer Reviews:
Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Customer Reviews:
Too cool for some.......2005-02-22
Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.
Ethereal and Hauntingly Beautiful.......2003-11-05
How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.
You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.
Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.
I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

Customer Reviews:
I really enjoyed this cd.......2004-03-19
Being a bass player myself I really enjoyed this cd becuase of the variety of music featured on it! I hope other people can enjoy it and appriciate it as well!
For Doublebass players.......2000-04-30
Nice arrangements, wonderful sound, a wide variety of songs but I wanted to listen more to Gary Karr. The interpretation of Moses Fantasy is better that the one played with the RSO Berlin Orchestra. If you are a DoubleBass player, this is a must. If you aren't, you'll hear what a doublebass can do and how sensitive it could be. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard for the first time the "sarcastic" version of Wannabe. This album is like a Raritie. If your're really looking for a serius album to know better the doublebass, this is not the first one that I'll chose. But it's really fun!
London Double Bass Sound.......2000-04-27
This CD is certainly an interesting concept, however musically speaking it doesn't quite hit the mark that it intended. Fans of Gary Karr should certainly consider buying this CD because his performances are inspiring and the ensemble does a nice job of accompanying, however the selection of repetoire does not always help the bassists' fight for serious recognition. "The Elephant" sounds grotesque enough with only one bass playing it, but here there are four basses on the solo line. The jazz tunes are nice, but lack a certain excitement and the inclusion of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe", as humorous as it may have intended to be, may set the double bass back a few steps in the eyes of the general, non bass playing public.

This review is dedicated to the memory of Bob Zeidler who shared on this site his love for and knowledge of the music of Charles Ives.
The Naxos "American Classics" series offers an unparalleled opportunity to get to know the music of the great American composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954). Prior CDs in the series focused on Ives's larger works, such as the symphonies, violin sonatas, and the Concord piano sonata. In contrast to the earlier releases, this CD includes a mix of shorter works performed by Continuum, a wonderful group of musicians based in New York City specializing in the performance of modern music. The CD had been released some years ago on Musical Heritage Society, and the release on Naxos was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Charles Ives Society, Inc. There is every reason to be grateful.
Much of the music on this disk will be unfamiliar to many listeners, and it bristles with difficulties. Yet, unlike the case with other avant garde music, there is an unmistakable joyousness to these pieces -- a zest for life, a feeling for the United States and its potential, and a transcendent vision. An inspiring CD indeed!
There are three broad sections to this disk. The first section consists of nine short unrelated pieces, beginning with Ives's well-known song "The Housatonic at Stockbridge." The section also includes an eloquent short song, "Remembrance" which Ives wrote upon the death of his father, his mentor and inspiration. The works on this section are filled with raucousness and lyricism, often at the same time. Besides the two works mentioned, the highlights include "Halloween, for chamber ensemble, which begins quietly and works itself into a frenzy, and Ives's song "Sunrise" for voice, piano, and violin obligato which was his last completed work.
The second section on the program consists of Ives's "Five Take-Offs" for solo piano performed here by Joel Sachs, co-director of Continuum. Ives composed these pieces in 1909, but they remained unperformed until 1968. These pieces juxtapose with great effect the traditional and the outrageous. The first piece, "The Seen and the Unseen", for example contrasts a line with an almost blusey feel (shared by other pieces on the CD) with a background of clangorous chords in the piano. The next piece, called "Jumping Frog" again begins quietly but works itself up to a frenetic pace over a huge piano accompaniment. The third piece, "Songs without (Good) Words" draws on Mendelsohn for inspiration. It remains quiet and lyrical throughout while the harmonies become more complex. The final two pieces, "Some Episode" and "Bad Resolution and Good WAN" are mostly reflective and quiet, with the exception of a riotous passage at the close -- the good resolution.
The third work on this CD is Ives at his knottiest. The "Three Quarter-Tone Pieces" dates from 1924 and was composed for two pianos tuned one-quarter-tone apart. This is again the language of the blues as well as the language of modernity. The pianists here are Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, the co-directors of Continuum. The opening Largo contrasts deep banging chords on the piano against light swirling figures in the treble. The second movement, "allegro" has a ragtime feel as clashing chords alternate with swirling filigree in the pianos' upper register.
The finale, "Chorale" works itself into an intense climax based upon themes from "America" with a hint of "La Marseilles" at the end for good measure. This is invigorating, difficult and rewarding music.
The CD is somewhat short (less than 50 minutes). It will introduce the listener to some of the wilder creations of America's greatest composer.

Great vocalese by Carmen McRae to Brubeck's tunes!.......2006-04-30
This is a great record because Carmen sings lyrics to Brubeck standards, such as "Take Five" and "It's A Raggy Waltz. I had never really listened to the LP, and had been looking for Brubeck CD's on eBay. This Japanese mini LP CD came up for bid, so I took a chance and won it. I really enjoy the performance! Close your eyes, and you are there listening to the Quartet with Carmen's great singing. The room noise adds to the ambience. This is a must for both Brubeck and McRae fans.
Dave Brubeck's Masterpieces by the Master McRae with Brubeck's famous quartet live in person!.......2006-02-21
This is simply Ms. Carmen McRae singing the music of Dave Brubeck with the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond in a live recording!
Pure artistry! Master command!
You'll find here all those incredible Brubeck's waltzes 'Take Five', It's A Raggy Waltz' and more ... 'In Your Own Sweet Way' ... 'Ode to A Cowboy' ... the wonderful ballad 'There'll Be No Tomorrow' ... all with surprisingly great lyrics by his wife Iola Brubeck.
I have treasured my vinyl album until today and prayed that sleepy Sony/Columbia will issue a CD of it some day.
I'm 29, had it on vinyl since I was 16...wish I could find it on CD.......2006-02-07
Where do I begin? I have had a small vinyl collection since my early teens...mostly 60s and 70s rock. When a friend presented me with the option to have some vinyls that her uncle was giving away, I gravitated toward this one for some reason even though I was unfamiliar with Dave Brubeck and Carmen McRae (sinful, I know!). I also picked up Fats Domino and some Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and C,S,N & Y). Which album got the most wear? Throughout highschool, college, and now adulthood this has remained one of my absolute favorites.
This recording is entrancing. You play it, sit back and relax...possibly with a small mixed drink, and you feel like you're there listening to Dave Brubeck and Carmen McRae Live. The background noise isn't distracting at all but adds to the incredible live atmosphere feeling. You hear a slight murmur of conversations, some glasses clinking...and you can almost see a haze of smoke in your mind as you listen to these amazing songs.
I wish dearly that I could get this album on CD because my vinyl is definitely getting worn from all the play...plus, I honestly don't use my turntable as much these days...it skips too much when I try to take it in my car on long trips (kidding!).
Anyway, this is the supreme pinnacle of Dave Brubeck and Carmen McRae. I would love to hear more recordings of the two of them together. If you're a fan of either, you're sure to love this album. To me, Raggy Waltz and Take Five just don't sound the same without Carmen McRae's voice (though I still like the instrumental versions.)
Any hints on how to get this album on CD would be appreciated. Until then, I'll play my vinyl as long as it will keep playing.
Where has Desmond gone?.......2005-11-02
This is basically a Carmen McRae and Dave Brubeck Trio (less Desmond) recording. I'm a big Desmond fan and was totally disappointed that he had contributed only a bit to TAKE FIVE, nothing else in the entire CD. Carmen basically did the Desmond parts without giving him a chance to do his usual great solo after her vocal parts. What a shame! Why in the world Brubeck made arrangements like this!
The vocal version of TAKE FIVE presents a quite different impression from the original version performed by the composer. The singing presented here sounds so hectic like tongue twister trying to squeeze so many words into the given rhythm, while the Desmond sounded so relaxing in the original saxophone version.
On the other hand, if you care little about Paul Desmond and can accept this CD as McRae and Brubeck Trio album, this is a pretty good recording, as good as 4 stars. The sound quality is great for a 1961 recording. Carmen sounds just the same until her final days. But just like Bill Evans Vanguard recordings in the same year, the NY audience kept on chatting during the entire show. Bill Evans may not have been a giant then, but Brubeck Trio (I mean Quartet) certainly was by then, and yet the NY audience was so disrespectful. Carmen would not have tolerated this in her final days.
To make up for the loss of Desmond in this CD, I recommend Paul Desmond & The Modern Jazz Quartet (JK57337) recorded at NYC Town Hall in 1971. There you get to enjoy beautiful collaborations in every tune between one of the greatest sax players of all time and MJQ, something I was expecting to hear in this album between Paul and Carmen. Oh, well.

...based on Gertrude Stein's work of that name chronicling the life of a sexually liberated mulatto woman in a time when Victorian morality was the lay of the land. Gertrude was American born but wrote in Paris from 1904 on. She and Dave had a lot in common in terms of equal opportunity in the arts for people not of caucasion persuasion. Dave and Iola were at one time purported to be working on an opera based on this character, thus its inclusion.
