If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

I get so much pleasure from Mew's music, I feel sorry for those who haven't discovered them. Loved glass handed kites, my favorite album of 2006, so I got frengers. Hard to say which I prefer. NO bad song, I love bands that don't impose duds on my ears. Pure delight! I wish these nice danish hippies the best in life, they're wonderful. Jonas sings like an angel, his voice carries me where few do (Jon Anderson, the mystic, comes to mind; bless him too, he's one of the best). No pointers, it's all top notch.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Frengs.......2006-12-22

Mew is a mishmash band -- a little indie-rock, a little prog, a little pop, a little hard-rock and a little art rock.

And in their third album "Frengers," the Danish band mixes all of those together, and lets listeners hear the grand extent of what they can do. This album is rich with atmospheric music and fiery instrumentation -- an absolutely dazzling, powerful slab of rock'n'roll.

It opens with the shimmering riffs and kinetic basslines of "Am I Wry? No," a hard-edged song with choirlike backing vocals. It grows into a soaring rock epic, before falling back to Jonas Bjerre's high, sharp voice. "Farrah now that we're here/can you tell me exactly how I should/have done?/Farrah drives with her eyes closed/do you ever inflict unwanted memories?"

It gets soft and wintry at the start of the next song, only to blossom out into a fast-paced rocker laced with bells and synth. The songs that follow are the whole sonic palette: muscular rockers, airy piano ballads backed with synth, driving guitar rockers, surreal psychfolk, and lightning-quick rock'n'roll that veers between guitar pop and the hard stuff.

Maybe that's what makes Mew so appealing -- you can't put a label on their sound (psych-pop-prog-hard-art-rock?) and you can't sit still whenever it's playing. Whenever their music settles into a signature "sound," they turn around and change it yet again.

Every song is layered with instrumentation -- some incredibly strong riffs, loud basslines, a fluid piano melody of two, a little synth, and some sharp percussion are all smoothed into one in songs like "Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed." Best of all, their music has an epic, powerful quality -- "Am I Wry? No" has the quality of a feisty thunderstorm.

Jonas Bjerre's voice is a bit elusive. At the start it sounds rather high and nasal, but eventually his vocals start melting into the music itself -- the peak is when he duets with Stina Nordenstam. And the songs he sings are quite solidly written ("Because no one is safe/From someone somewhere's/Sweet embrace/And so I have simply decided/To dislike you now").

"Frengers" is a solid third album for this brilliant Danish band, and the first album that got them the notice they richly deserve. Wonderful piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Engage Mew.......2006-12-13

After purchasing "And the Glass Handed Kites" and, admittedly, listening to it every day for two months straight, I thought it might be prudent for my future enjoyment of the album to put it down for awhile. Within days, I was missing Mew. To combat this feeling, I resisted the urge to put "And the Glass Handed Kites" back in the player, and instead ordered "Frengers." After all, in my initial research of Mew's oeuvre, I found several tunes that I liked that were not on that recording.

"Frengers" is easily as strong a recording as "And the Glass Handed Kites," but for different reasons. Undoubtedly, fans of one will like the other, as they share the same overall aesthetic. However, in comparison, "Frengers" has some significantly distinguishing characteristics. Most importantly, "Frengers" is not bound by the conventions associated with the "conceptual album." While "And the Glass Handed Kites" is probably the more mature effort of the two, "Frengers" may be a better introduction to the group, as it is more single-friendly. Succinctly, if I were to introduce someone to Mew, I would undoubtedly suggest "156," followed by "Snow Brigade." In both of these tunes, they are able to reference the epic scope of their vision in a succinct format.

While these songs stand out to me as an individual, I genuinely like all the other songs on "Frengers." Unbound by the conventions of the "conceptual album," "Frengers" shows Mew's ability to encapsulate, and therefore show the strengths of their short-form works. While "And the Glass Handed Kites" inarguably shows that they have the ability to sustain a conceptual narrative, "Frengers" is an example of the potential strength of their singles.

The Lowdown: "Frengers" is the middle ground. Mew pushes the boundaries between accessibility and experimentalism, and I see "Frengers" as a transitional album in the tradition of Yes' "Drama" and Genesis' "And Then There Were Three." I foresee great things for them in the future if they continue to push the envelope.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding album.......2006-05-04

I will say right now that this is one of the best-sounding albums you will ever hear. Listen to the last minute of Behind the Drapes, as an example (some clarity is sacrificed for an overwhelming wall of sound, a good choice). I want Rich Costey to produce my album (he gets the production credit in the liner notes).
Aside from its unmatched sound, the music stands on its own. The song writing is above par: sophisticated but not esoteric. A handful of songs are as catchy as anything on the Billboard charts (Snow Brigade).
Some songs will probably strike you as emo-ish (She Spider), or power ballad-y (Symmetry), but overall, the album is huge, dreamy, many-layered rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars meet Peggy...and Sqwubbsy.......2005-09-23

Julian Cope is a bit of a legendary figure who has a tendency to write really earthy ragged pop songs with an offbeat edge. his songs are so great because he infuses them with pure personality. this kind of characteristic seems to drive the songwriting process forward into a solid effort everytime the studio reels start rolling. Cope's tunes are filled with joy, sorrow, confusion, and many times silliness. his love of obscure psychadelic music is well documented on his HeritageHead website; and his solo work draws alot of inspiration from that particular style. the guitar work tends to be a bit spacey at times, and the rhythms are primal and well thought out. every song seems to have it's own steady pulse and Julian rides over all of it like some sort of half-crazed insightful singing shaman.

"Peggy Suicide" is a crowning glory of an album. an epic slab of rock with lots of loose ragged edges. Cope's lyrics are splendid on here, and rather than print the lyrics out in the booklet, he opts to personally write his thoughts on the meanings behind the songs. his words are sung in a low slung drawl that delivers his wit and insight with a tense sting and a wink in his devilish eyes. the album is bookend by two tender ballads "Pristeen" and "Las Vegas Basement."

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Cope at his best.......2005-08-12

Julian Cope really is a very erratic performer: some of his albums play like St. Augustine on acid - sweet, divine, censorious, libidinous and completely mad...check out "World Shut Your Mouth" for a taste of what I mean.
The pattern holds here but it is clear that Cope has absorbed the lessons of the rather unhappy (and apprently somewhat corporate-coerced) "My Nation Underground" and produced a set of songs that are political, dramatic, hugely listenable and full of great hooks.
The textures include the prog-rock epic aspirations of "Safesurfer" - a song about contraception with tremendous lyrics like "Just another sheep boy/duck call/swan song/Donkey Kong/& I said: 'you don't have to be afraid love, 'cos I'm a Safesurfer darling'. Enigmatic and fascinating. The music is superb, too - waves of guitars beating the blazes out of one another.
Then there are the environmental anthems and sonic experiments of "Western Front 1992 CE", "Hung Up & Hanging Out To Dry" and the poll-tax riot song (complete with Lenny Bruce in scathing form) "Soldier Blue".
Not to forget the pure pop and jangly rock of songs like "Beautiful Love" (most folks rate this the albums best, but I'll pick the rocky, ardent and angry "Leperskin") and the anti-automobile vitriol of "East Easy Rider" and "Drive She Said". Poltical songs that pound in your ears yet melt in your mouth. Gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Julian, where have you gone?.......2005-07-23

This CD was all I listened to for 5 or 6 months back in the early 1990's and I still pull it out frequently, especially while driving. This collection of songs is environmentally aware, but not preachy, and I believe that this, coupled with superb song-writing and the sincerest of devotions to the future of what Cope calls "mother earth" is what makes "Peggy Suicide" a theme album that works.

Stylistically the spectrum is broad. "Pristeen", "Promised Land" and "Las Vegas Basement" are all slow ballads, the first two cresdendoing into a signature climaxes, the last remaining heart-felt and mournful. "Drive, She Said", "American Lite" and "Leperskin" are great classic rock anthems. "Head", "Soldier Blue" and "If You Loved Me At All" are groovy and psychedelic, but more accessible than a lot of Teardrop Explodes material of Julian's yesteryear. The gem of the collection is "Beautiful Love", a radio-friendly ode to divine charity inspired by swimming with dolphins.

Some songs will be a bit more challenging to traditional rock fans. "Hung up and hanging out to dry" is an orchestral monolith with only the seven words of the title seemingly caught once again in Cope's repetitive yet ever-building crescendo to an explosive climax. "Soldier Blue" was written about a protest in which the police became involved which includes a related Lenny Bruce routine to accentuate the theme. These are all catchy tunes, however, and even "You" and "Western Front", which might remind one of cartoon soundtrack material, will stick enjoyably in the mind of appreciative listeners.

It's well to mention that Peggy Suicide is drenched in Julian's sense of humor which co-exists quite naturally with his political message. He had stated in an interview shortly after the album was released that he wanted the album to be "righteous, not self-righteous" and so he wrote anti-driving songs, like "east Easy Rider", which contain the thematic message, but which he commented are "great to listen to while driving". Not being on the same page politically with Cope, I still appreciate his devotion and these songs remain some of my favorites ever.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Cope.......2005-06-25

The opening cut Pristene is friggen awesome and just about everything else that follows is almost as good. I'd highly recommend this one and 20 Mothers to new fans. Can't go wrong with either one.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, even for the uptight among us..........2004-01-27

This is not one of those albums you can neatly categorize. It's kind of like Julian, Hamell on Trial, and Built to Spill got together one night and took a heroic dose of acid :) Except this was all in 1991... It goes through a whole range of moods.. is a little hard to get into in Phase One with some pretty raw tracks like Pristine and Hanging Out... But after a few listens of the whole album it makes more sense. Phase Two and Phase Three are much more flowing and sometimes repetitive in a good way.. probably influences of underground electronic music I imagine he had been hearing a lot at the time. Just a guess there.. It's just one great musical moment after another! The track Safesurfer alone is worth buying the whole album. Phase Four lightens it up a bit musically, with the "hit" track Beautiful Love which is downright pop-ey yet not at all in a bad way, another great track, Western Front is really cool as is Hung Up and Hanging Out to Dry. The album plays more like a movie or a show than an album, with ideas appearings in one song and then coming back modified in another. Really great moments all the way through, and very few bad ones... BTW, to the other reviewer who doesn't know what "Not Raving but Drowning" is about, read the liner notes! It's based on the true story of a guy who was tripping on acid, and accidentally fell off the railing on a ferry... The song is a guess at what he might have been thinking as he went down... Anyway, a great album, one of my favorites for 12 years and by far my favorite of all the work Julian Cope has done. Highly recommended if you like Built to Spill or Radiohead... Great instrumental work through the whole thing too, excellent guitars... It is a real masterpiece...

European only release features their two late '90s multi-platinum-selling studio albums, Fly (1998) and Wide Open Spaces (1998) in one very affordable package. Although the Dixie Chicks had existed in one form or another for nearly a decade, it wasn't until original members Martie Seidel and Emily Erwin recruited vocalist Natalie Maines that things really took off for the Chicks. Since their debut as a trio (Wide Open Spaces), they have become one of the biggest Country crossover acts in the world. This two CD set includes the hits 'Goodbye Earl', 'Let Him Fly', 'I Can Love You Better', 'There's Your Trouble' and more. Packaged in two standard jewel cases which are housed in a slipcase. Sony.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars See My Face.......2007-01-12

What needs to be said about the Dixie Chicks and their first two albums with Natalie Maines as lead singer? Perhaps you, like myself, got interested in their music after Natalie's comment about George W. Bush. Or perhaps you made the mistake of throwing their CD's out to be crushed, only to realize three years later that they were right all along, and now wish you can be forgiven. It does not matter. Songs like Cowboy Take Me Away, Wide Open Spaces and Goodbye Earl are all time classics. If you paid no attention to these songs before, you have no idea what you are missing. You will enjoy them no matter how often you listen to them. There must be some new interest in the Dixie Chicks in Europe for them to re-release these two CD's in one package over there. But perhaps you should buy their newest CD Take the Long Way first (at least to understand the title of this review), then go to see the documentary Shut Up and Sing, and only then buy this set. Whatever. Enjoy these moments while you can. The people on the other side have so successfully ruined their careers for having expressing their views, I would be surprised if the Dixie Chicks will bother to come out with another CD and/or tour ever again. It is a shame.

If you see "Space Cakes" by Alanis Morissette in your local music store, I can understand if you have 99% doubts about buying it. It is probably not under $30 or more. Even if you are a true Alanis fan, think twice. Try your local used music stores. I got mine for only $8. Despite the price, if you are a true Alanis fan, this album is for you. It clears her rage and angst in songs like "Head Over Feet", "Right Through You", "Forgiven", "Perfect", "Not the Doctor", and "You Learn". All of these songs are beautifully done acoustically on "Space Cakes". This album is soothing and is great for you when you aren't in the mood for her yelping and whining. I would have to say that "You Learn" is done best on here. It is so different, but great. Basically, the only other info that you need is that this album is for Alanis fans only. I can't stress that enough. Normally I would give this album 5 stars, but man, one whole star down for its price range.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Gong Album.......2001-10-29

Buy it if you can find it. I know this may say cliche but they don't make music like this anymore.

      5 out of 5 stars Steel umbrellas.......2000-03-08

1979's "Downwind" sees this band taking another step forward into a more accessible and melodic sound. Overall, this album is slightly more rock-influenced and less jazzy than its predecessors, featuring guest stars like Mike Oldfield, Mick Taylor, and Steve Winwood. Fans of Oldfield's "Ommadawn" and "Incantations" will particularly love the new age rock of the 12 1/2-minute title track, and "Xtasea". The catchy "Aeroplane", the cover version of Santana's "Jin-go-lo-ba" with its tuneful percussions, and "What you know" pave the way for Gong's more pop-oriented efforts in the '80s. The dreamy vibraphone/violin duetto of "Emotions" is another highlight. "Downwind" is a record made by virtuos musicians, but it is never formless or devoid of good melody integrity. Recommended in any case, this is one of Gong's best albums.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......1999-03-28

This is my favorite of all of the Gong albums. It is a good mix of Jazz, Rock & fusion Stevie Winwood plays on a couple of tracks & Pierre Morlein is exceptional as usual.
