Who knew the old nursery song "Three Blind Mice" could sound downright jazzy? New Yorker Josh Greenberg, founder of and saxophonist for the Mother Goose Jazz Band, wants kids to know the difference between a sax and just plain sacks, between a riff and a roof. His critically acclaimed 1995 debut album for kids, Go With the Flow, set well-known children's rhymes to jazz music. The band's follow-up recording See How They Run takes the same tack, showcasing a variety of jazz styles in songs from "This Old Man" (in the style of tenor master Sonny Rollins) to "Fuzzy Wuzzy" (a nod to alto genius Charlie Parker) to "Alouette." The recording features Manhattan Transfer founder Laurel Massé on lead vocals, Chris Brubeck on bass, Lee Shaw on piano, Mark Vinci and Josh Greenberg on saxophones, Chuck D'Aloia on guitar, and Gene Garone on drums. A talented youth chorus of girls from local high schools and colleges is also featured on the album. Chorus members include: Katie Andolina, Briana Dolan, Kathleen Dolan, Emmy Duffy, Chivon Millan, Marissa Richute, Johannah Schillenger, Joy Schillenger, and Heather Walton. The music is accessible to children, encouraging them to sing and dance, while at the same time bringing pleasure to the adults who will share in the musical experience. Adaptations of nursery rhymes in the style of jazz masters Sonny Rollins, ("This Old Man" and "Jack Be Nimble") Charlie Parker, ("Fuzzy Wuzzy") and the Dave Brubeck Quartet, ("Peanut Butter Cookies") bring the rich heritage of jazz to a whole new generation. "See How They Run takes the listeners further along in the concept of jazz than our previous albums," says Greenberg. "There's more soloing and room for the musicians to stretch out.
