Product Description
Sudama with Sapphron Obois (sax) is a CD collection of original songs, poems, lullabyes, and ballads, by Sudama Mark Kennedy as well as classic poems set to original music. Perfect for intensive and repetitive listening as well as perfect background music that is both soothing and energetic for all kinds of warm-hearted environments. If you combine James Taylors more baritone voicings with Stings or Lorena Mckennits Anglo-literary bent and world influence, as well as the heart feeling of a Stevie Wonder song with Sades mystical edge, you get Sudamas mytho-poetic healing landscapes supported artfully by Sapphrons delicious sax tone. A truly unique CD! Sudama is a spirited, heartfelt, world folk jazz journey with an edge, which includes three Rudyard Kipling poems from the Jungle Book put to music for the first time: White Seals Lullabye Shiv and the Grasshopper, Hunting Song of the Seeonie Pack. Wynken, Blynken, and Nod the eternal lullaby by ! Eugene Field (circa 1895) is given new life by Sudamas mystical oceanic music. El Nino begins softly and blows up an instrumental gale of Sapphrons sax and Sudamas shakuhachi against zither waves and a guitar bass line. Caught an Angel is your muse flapping her wings. Awakening is a spoken word invitation to understand the wisdom of the body and the wisdom of Mother Earth against compelling and propelling tablas and trance guitar, with a triumphant sax coda. Beshr the Barefoot is a sitar, sax, bass and doumbek celebration of a Sufi mystic who gave it all up for God. Sailors Bid is Sudamas original haunting love ballad featuring Sapphrons piano and sax. Flying Girl Waltz and Megannes Water Music are instrumental 6 and 12-string steel acoustic guitar pieces respectively, in DADGAD tuning.

Caught An Angel Got My Attention.......2001-12-06
After Caught an Angel it was all icing.
It was the best collaboration in a very long time.
Such emotions and blending.
Just plain GOOD story telling...and instrumentation
More More and More.
superlative!.......1999-09-22
What a joy to hear such an excellent new artist! This incredible album is exactly the kind of music that I've been searching for. Not only are the songs themselves wonderful but the misicians are really outstanding. This album does something that is incredibly difficult to do, namely it is calming AND energizing at the same time. At first I was really digging a few tunes alot, but after listening a little deeper I began to hear subtle things that actually, well I guess just made me want to hear more. Thank you and MORE!!!
A Cloud of Bliss.......1999-09-20
There was a time a while back when I did a good bit of writing about music for Time Magazine--still do, occasionally, although now I've turned to film scripts for creative release, and to music like the sounds of "Sudama" for inspiration. This is a truly ravishing and inspiring collection of songs from deep within a creative spirit that manages both to be beguilingly open and teasingly private. "Sudama" is an invitation to meditation and exploration that has antcedents not only in New Age but in the restless inventiveness of Coltrane's jazz and the Dead's peaceable, funky kingdom. A wonder.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic CD.......2006-11-15
I purchase 20 to 30 smooth jazz CDs each year, and I recently purchased Sapphron Obois' self titled debut CD after seeing her perform on an old BET Jazz concert. I find her CD to one of the very best CDs I have bought in recent years. Sapphron's playing is excellent, but I find her song writing and melodies to be fantastic. If this were a Dave Koz or Mindy Abair CD, a number of songs would get regular radio airplay. If you want a great hidden gem in the smooth jazz world, I encourage you to add this CD to your collection.
A Great Find.......2004-01-23
I purchased this CD about 3 years ago and was not disappointed. There are a number of good cuts on this debut CD including Sweet Dreams, Let's Try Again, Soulmates, I Loved You Forever, and Sausalito. This CD is well worth it. I guess my only disappointment is we haven't heard from Sapphron since this debut CD.
Queen of Sax Soul.......2003-07-24
I'm a little late in my review of her first CD, but I could not be more entranced by her virtuosity. The proof for me is longevity and I have probably played this piece a few hundred times since buying it 2 years ago. Particularly arresting are Sweet Dreams, I loved You Forever, and Sausalito.
Sapphron catches a bitter-sweetness with her soprano sax that I have heard from no one.
Can it be that she has that edge of soul because she's a woman in a male dominated jazz world? Whatever it is she is immensely talented.
Let's hear some more, very soon.
One of the best players in the new generation.......2002-08-07
I grew up listening to Ronnie Laws, Grover Washington, and David Sanborn, so my opinion of many of the new generation of sax players is rather low. But a co-worker gave me this CD, and after hearing the first 30 seconds of the first cut, knew I had to revise my opinion. Her talent is evident. Sapphron Obois has gorgeous tone, and on a home theater system sounds superb.
I highly recommend it as an addition to your jazz collection, particularly if you are a sax fan.
The best soprano sax player out there.......2001-12-17
This artist is such an excellent sax player. She should have a major deal with serious financial backing. She puts most of the other top players to shame. great tone, perfect intonation, hip ideas and amazing production for a first CD. Very original music. Nice first CD. Good job Ms Obois.
