Trumpeter Nicholas Payton has a tough line of influence preceding him. His New Orleans roots--not to mention his stellar self-titled CD of duets with Doc Cheatham--recall the great Louis Armstrong, even if his style is less aligned with any single horn voice. He's moved stealthily into a groove with the band on Nick@Night since they came together on CD for Gumbo Nouveau in 1995. Soprano and tenor saxophonist Tim Warfield plays nicely clipped lines on the straight horn, with drummer Adonis Rose crashing along at times with the force of a Tony Williams acolyte, surprising those familiar with earlier, more laid-back Payton affairs. Of course, the trumpeter is the front man and grabs much of the attention with his rapid attack, bent with arty slurs and half-valve statements. Payton solos with lightning quickness and hopping, rhythmic leaps on "Blacker Black's Revenge" and the pair of entertaining interludes that dot Nick@Night. And despite the presence of the very unhumorous harpsichord on a couple tracks, this rendition of Payton's band hearkens back to the Cheatham session (very obliquely) in its sense of fun, with "Captain Crunch (Meets the Cereal Killer)" living up in spirit to its promising title. Further, Anthony Wonsey actually makes the harpsichord (and the celeste) sound appropriate here, sticking with the instrument's warmer corners and steering away from any hyperruns or nervous stair climbs. Payton's band can be a rollicking one, and here they show their full range of potency. --Andrew Bartlett

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

this was a gift for family. family member loves album quality and selections.

Amici Forever is suberb in every way. Their arrangements are exceptional and the original lyrics are perfect poetry.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2006-09-21

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place. As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. Gibson's vision of the Passion has had many second-guessing his motivations and choices, but Debney's rich, evocative score proves there's nothing wrong with his ears. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving.......2007-06-13

I wish I knew all the names of the instruments that are being played in the score because they are absolutely mesmerizing! What an amazing score to accompany an amazing movie. Never a dull moment, I find myself being moved by the overall emotion of the music. The great thing about epic scores is that they manage to stir up some feelings within you of power, pride, and faith. It manages to inspire some in many different ways. I think that's the most important thing here. You can call it mood music or just simply uplifting. For me, the best way to listen to a score like this is with a great pair of headphones and a clear mind.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciation.......2007-04-15

This has to be the most touching score to a movie I have ever appreciated.
Watching the movie was one thing but then listening to the score blew me away. I could find myself crying just hearing the music and placing it at the point in the story.
What a range of music. So well done and so different. The song selection for the different scenes in the movie just fit. It is as if each song was the perfection for its placement in the movie.
The score can hold it's own in itself but together they are as one.

1 out of 5 stars Not original .......2007-02-16

I recently purchased both The Passion of the Christ soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Passion. I really wanted to like The Passion of the Christ score, as I loved the movie. Regrettably, John Debney's music is so much like Peter Gabriel's superb Passion soundtrack, used in 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ that it becomes a farce. It even uses Gabriel's long-time collaborator, vocalist and double violinist Shankar, whose unique sound was also used on Gabriel's Passion. The producers also used a piece from Gabriel's Rabbit Proof Fence soundtrack for The Passion's 2003 teaser trailer. There's no doubt that Debney has copied Gabriel. Also the highlight of The Passion of the Christ is a theme virtually identical to one from John William's Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack.

So buy Gabriel's Passion over The Passion of the Christ, it is a magnificent score and far more original.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-02-03

For me the most inspiring track is "Resurrection". I remember the day that I saw this movie for the first time almost 3 years ago. My friend and I stayed until the end of the credits only to listen to this track. It's my candidate for best final scene in a movie. Now , 'Resurrection" (as the rest of the album) is in my Creative Zen Vision M and I listen to this beautiful piece of music everyday. It's really inspiring. Buy it!!!
P.S. There are so many Jews here and there writing a lot of negative reviews about this soundtrack and the movie. Don't pay any atention to that. This soundtrack and the movie are masterpieces.

2 out of 5 stars Buy Peter Gabriel's Passion.......2007-01-16

Anyone who knows Peter Gabriel's Passion would agree with me in saying that John Debney's score has taken liberally from Gabriel's incredible work, and a few have written as much in the Online reviews for this item. Do yourself a favor, buy Peter Gabriel's Passion. Even though The Last Temptation of Christ may not have been the best movie, the soundtrack was, one of my favorites. I listen to it often, and each time it takes me to another place.

Another plug along Christian movie lines, The Mission by Ennio Morricone, a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional recording and performance.......2005-06-08

I find I can't agree with the other appraisals I see here of this delightful recording of this musical. Both Roni Page and Steve Devereaux are truly exceptional with Devereaux in particular bringing a very pleasing baritone and a great characterization to the part. Personally, I do not feel either of them give up anything to Powell or Keel in the quality of their singing and I, in many ways, find them preferable.

I think this set is also more complete than the MGM issue containing songs like "One Man", "Love Never Goes Away", "We Got To Make It Through the Winter" and "Glad That You Were Born" that are just not in the MGM CD. Moreover, the sound quality is excellent in this issue. The impact of the score comes over exceptionally as a result.

Frankly, I would prefer to have both recordings, but if I could have only one, it would be this one.

3 out of 5 stars average production, average recording.......2004-04-27

SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS was tricked-out for the stage in the early 80's, and quickly met its demise in London. This production opened in 1984 but met with mixed reviews, and closed after a relatively short run.

Roni Page and Steve Devereaux hardly compare with Jane Powell and Howard Keel (though who could?), but aquit themselves with their solid voices. Roni Page beautifully handles Millie's elation in "Wonderful Wonderful Day" (which features a rewritten lyric and setting).

Steve Devereaux has a powerful voice, used to his advantage in "Bless Your Beautiful Hide" and "Sobbin' Women". Although the new songs written by Al Kasha and Joel Hirshhorn don't fit in well with the original Johnny Mercer-Gene de Paul songs.

The supporting cast includes Peter Bishop, Victoria Lynson, Michaela Strachan, Anna Rees and Tom Barritt.

Stick with the 1997 studio cast with Katrina Murphy and Hal Fowler, available on the JAY/Showtime! label.

4 out of 5 stars A welcome recording.......2000-10-28

I was glad to get this recording simply because it had the songs that were added after the movie. The problem is that it just doesn't have the musical feel that I was expecting, the Barn Dance isn't on here, and the guy that plays Adam is just ridiculous sounding. The rest of the cast sounds decent, and the woman who plays Millie shows just the right amount of feistiness and tenderness. All in all, I'd say it's only for the completists, otherwise wait until the Jay Masterworks recording coming soon.

5 out of 5 stars Lovedrug Matches up with Edward Scissorhands?.......2007-04-14

Hey,

I just wanted to give you the scoop that I was talking to some of the guys from the fairly popular indie rock band Lovedrug and they mentioned that their album is based on the tim burton movie Edward Scissorhands and that their music fits up to the movie perfectly. Here is the kicker though...it matches up best when the cd/ipod is on shuffle. They mentioned that you can even better the experience by turning on repeat so it plays for the whole movie. That's how perfect it is. I think the album is called everything starts where it ends.

I tried it and it did work, weirdly enough :)

Thought it was kind of cool so I wanted to share....

4 out of 5 stars Edward Cut and Pasted.......2006-12-16

I love Danny Elfman's music. From the original Oingo Boingo to now, he has a voice of ecclectic brilliance. Matthew Bourne loved the movie...and he loved the music....and he's used a certain amount of it for his brilliant new ballet, BUT....yes, I heard that Danny Elfman was not able, because of time problems, to create a full score for the ballet, which is a shame. Yes, Terry Davies has written great music for Bourne before ("Play Without Words"...fabulous jazz riffs for an incredible ballet, available on CD), but in this case, there isn't the kind of melding that would create one entire blanket of music....it's almost patchwork quiltish....and, believe it or not, there are snatches of music that mirror (if not blatantly steal) bits of Trevor Jones' themes from "The Dark Crystal"....why couldn't Elfman and Bourne cobble together from other brilliant scores by Elfman to create an oevre that is true to the original. On a whole, the score works best with the visual ballet, but if you are really a fan of Elfman and Edward S, listen to the original sound track from the film, also available here at Amazon. In fact, get every Danny Elfman disc available and luxuriate in his imagination, skill and wit....... if you've seen the ballet, get the London recording and relive another brilliant creation by Matthew Bourne. And will this ballet ever come to DVD? Check out "Swan Lake" and "The Car Man"...."Edward Scissorhands", the London Stage Premiere Recording is definitely worth having in your library

    5 out of 5 stars A Surprise Gem.......2007-04-30

Trying to find new musicals, I recently stumbled on this production of "Just So". I must say, I was really impressed with this show. Every song is catchy and interesting. Few of the songs were really good on their own, without the context of the musical, but altogether, the show as a whole was what impressed me. I would really like to see a production of this someday.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2007-03-19

My school did this musical and it was AWESOME!!!! I was a Wallaby and Our group sang Leaps & Bounds, Just So, Limpopo River, Wait a Bit, and Just So Finale. It was a really fun musical to be a part of!!! I also suggest "Honk" Our school did that musical too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just So wonderful!.......2007-03-17

I recently saw a local production of "Just So", performed by middle school students. Loved the show so much, it prompted me to get the CD. The soundtrack and the show tell great stories based on Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" -- such as how the zebra got its stripes, the rhino got baggy skin, and the kangaroo got its bounce. Almost every song is a winner. I have been listening to it repeatedly for weeks straight, and I'm still as anxious to put it on as when I first got it. My kids have asked to hear it again and again, and we have all memorized the songs. "Just So", "Living on this Island", "We Want to Take the Ladies Out", and "The Parsee Cake Walk" are favorites. If you have the opportunity to see the show, it will really bring the soundtrack to life. This one is a keeper!

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs, but doesn't have the wow factor I have come to expect!.......2006-09-09

I had high expectations of this musical, as I am a huge fan of Honk! And I'll admit, there are some pretty catchy numbers. I particularly like Just So and The Limpopo River. Of course, these numbers became reprised throughout the show with even more heightened melodies and fantastic harmonies. But overall, in a musical, I enjoy listening to the one song that just grabs you and leaves you almost breathless. Unfortunately on this level, 'Just So' fails to deliver. 'Wait a Bit' comes close but just when you think the note of notes will be sung, you are left hanging with an anti-climax. 'Leaps and Bounds' is a fun number but I'm not sure these two or three good numbers will be enough to capture audience attention.
If you have heard of Seussical, with the elephant and the bird, then you will alo recognise the amazing similarities with the 'Just So' Elephant and Bird relationship. And guess what, this bird can't fly for a time either!!
A "nice" musical, but not one I would rave about.

5 out of 5 stars This is Jazz.......2002-07-04

Yeah. This one is a winner. Payton and his amazing sidemen must have had an extra helping of soul on the date of this recording. They just play so well! From free jazz to bebop, this take has it all. Oh, and also, the song Faith alone is worth the price of the whole CD.

    4 out of 5 stars This cd's a burner.......2001-11-15

I bought this soon after it came out, played many times and really liked it. I put it back in rotation recently and have really come to love this cd. These guys smoke! Reminds me of Lee Morgan "Sidewinder" era. Payton and Warfield match up really well and were meant to play together. The tunes are straight ahead bop that never let up. I also found Anthony Wonsey to be a very interesting pianist. The cd didn't strike me as ground breaking, but I'm not a musician so I may be missing something. It is however chock full of great tunes with inspired playing. Definitely check out this cd as well as Payton's "Payton's Place".

    5 out of 5 stars This is 10 stars.......2001-02-10

Wow. Sorry. Most of the other reviewers slipped up on this one. This is one of the most amazing of my 200 Jazz CD's. I have nothing better. It's right there with Clifford Brown and others. The 3rd cut Faith, about 8 minutes is other=worldly. Run, don;t walk to buy this. Use Fed-Ex to ship it. Get it in your hands and playing ASAP. I can't tell you how gald I am that I just bought tickets today for his UCLA Concert on February 14th. Wow.

2 out of 5 stars I know he can do better then this.......2000-10-05

Well, I expected more from this guy, I really did. Usually when I take a disc and see Nicholas Payton in it as a leader or as a side man I know that this is a swingie , hot , tasty one, and usuasly I was right. This album on the other hand was a huge dissapointment. If you want to get know Nicholas payton do not it with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Give me a Dark cold night to listen to Nick at Night.......2000-04-28

This musical venture by the secure Mr. Payton is all the things Jazz is about, with a relax modern enjoyable hipness to it. Its heavy enough for your purists, yet hip enough for a groovester. The tunes are all very well written with a great feel and soulfull touch. It can sometimes have a R&B sensous sound within a acoustic format that never loses the essence of Jazz ! This for a younger crowd of Jazz fans has to be the best Cd I have heard in years. If your trying to turn on a somewhat hesitate young cat into straight ahead Jazz, this is the CD!

Oh, that Fonzie. He sure knew good music and he sure knew how to drive chicks nuts-a-mundo!

I play this CD on my dates. My dates love it. Sometime they get so into it that they actually call me Fonzie. Heeeeeey - you can't ask for much more than that!

Most of these tracks can be found on better collections (and CDs with less embarrassing titles than this one). The inclusion of the rare novelty track "The Fonz Song" by the Heyettes is worth the price for serious collectors. All original versions.
