Let's face it, if you play jazz harmonica you've got to deal with the shadow of Toots Thielemans. German-born Hendrik Meurkens faces up with Thielemans well, with a fluent, saxophonelike phrasing. On this date, he's backed by pianist Dodo Maroni, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb, and bassist Chris Berger. Meurkens and company deliver straight-ahead, no-nonsense jazz with strong bop touches. "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" swings with an Ahmad Jamal-tinged arrangement; "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and Charlie Parker's "Scrapple from the Apple" dance on bebop and Latin lines. Meurkens's lyricism on the ballad "My Foolish Heart" beautifully bridges Lester Young and Benny Carter in its phrasing and shows that he stands above the inevitable comparisons with Toots. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:
Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Customer Reviews:
Don't Let the Title Put You Off.......2006-07-21
Why the recording company ever decided on the corny title of 'Carol's Concerto Collection' for this very worthwhile selection of works by fine performers remains an enigma. But try to ignore the commercialism of the package and listen and buy this CD for a very fine selection of works for piano and orchestra.
Carol Rosenberger is an excellent, sensitive pianist who can span dissimilar music periods with finesse. The elegance and joy of her performances of the Haydn D major and G major piano concerti are as fine as any on record, particularly since she is balanced with pristine collaboration with Gerard Schwarz conducting the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The readings are fluid, unrushed, and performed with utmost clarity of line.
Strauss' 'Burleske' can often sound like pastiche but under Rosenberger's facile fingers it becomes a fine little tour de force. Here Schwarz conducts the Seattle Symphony Orchestra with just the right amount of zest and momentary abandon. Howard Hanson's 'Fantasy Variations on a Theme of Youth' is an oddity that, while not entirely memorable, does serve as a gesture of introduction of unfamiliar works few other pianists would program. It is a good piece and coupled here with his more substantial 'Concerto in G' finds Rosenberger making it make sense with the able assistance of Schwarz and the New York Chamber Symphony and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
'Noches en los jardines de España' (Nights in the Gardens of Spain) by Manuel de Falla closes this collection with a solid impressionistic flavor. Rosenberger understands the colors of this piece and gives an authoritative performance with Schwarz and the London Symphony Orchestra. So despite the 'grab bag' suggestion of the title of the CD, this is a collection of works well performed and recorded and makes for a fine little varied traversal of piano literature. Harmonica & Jazz?.......2001-02-11
I have too admit I am not a jazz harmonica fan. Yes,I've heard Toots, but he does'nt really do it for me. So you can imagine my surprise when I found myself drawn to the sounds of Hendrick Meurkens! The sound is relaxed and sophisticated. He shares ample space with sax man Eric Alexander, and a wonderful rhythm section. Harmonica & Jazz? Well I have too admit that I have practically worn this CD out in the first two months of ownership. If you like Hardbop & Cool Jazz, buy this! It's a "10"...

Warning: if you don't care for a cappella singing, don't even get near Avenue X. Set in 1963, the show tells a story of black-Italian antagonism in a Brooklyn neighborhood without the help of any instruments other than the human voice. John Jiler's lyrics usually manage to avoid heavy-handed didacticism, but they often are undermined by the homogeneity of the music. Using doo-wop made sense, since the best vocal groups of the time came from the two communities featured in the show, but it can also be limiting: Ray Leslee's score often feels like a very long version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Still, some songs do have a touching pathos--"Woman of the World" particularly stands out, thanks to Colette Hawley's understated emotion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Fab Fab Fab.......2003-03-27
I personally have an eccentric taste in music, but I think most people would really enjoy this CD. The voices are amazing, and I love all the songs. I bought this CD for three books from my library, but I would buy it for twenty. Definitly a keeper.

Cool & Hip!.......2001-09-10
There's simnply nothing else like this! COMPLETELY A CAPPELLA! - and fantastic performances from some of the finest singers in New York City today! HAAARRRMONEEEY! Even the package is beautiful, especially the insert booklet that documents this killer Off-Broadway show. The original songs range from Doo-Wop to Gospel to Jazz to haunting Italian melodies to deeply soulful and rocking grooves. AVENUE X is for all who love singing.
Fabulous acapella. Performed to perfection........1998-12-21
I was very pleasantly surprised with this CD. It's true that acapella aficionados will love it, however, if you enjoy the music of the 50's and early 60's you will love it too. The performances are outstanding and the material extremely authentic sounding. My only desire is to see the show somewhere. Try it, you'll like it.

Purely acoustic music, capturing the array of experiences of the city landscape at night. Where the sounds of jazz and blues and R'n'B float as a soundtrack to the time of day we are our most hopeful, and our most vulnerable.

A Stand-out Album - BUY IT!.......2001-11-08
Fantastic performances on this album - every time I give it a listen, I find myself pausing whatever I'm doing for a few minutes to fully enjoy the track. The CD is very well produced and nicely balanced, and tracks are nicely sequenced.
What I really like, and what makes this CD different from the rest, is that the vocalist E.J. Decker shares the spotlight with the guys in the band, who turn in superb performances. It's like being in a New York nightclub -- the singer takes a little breather, and the musicians are having such a great time they just keep going 'til the vocalist jumps back in.
From toe-tappers to smoky ballads, you'll really enjoy this slice of New York nightlife - BUY IT!

Customer Reviews:
Smashing Album.......2005-11-11
Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.
Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26
I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.
Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15
This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.
A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25
The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.
Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.
Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.
