Editorial Reviews
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Not half as well known as he should be, Edwards is a Delta- born jazz saxophonist who impresses for his post-bop inventiveness and his predisposition to the blues. Allowed a rare feature date, he gives lessons in how to delve into a melody for meaning and then express the resulting revelations in down-home terms-relish the poetic beauty of the title song. Tom Waits, an original, molds his vocal excesses into triumphant blues declarations in Edwards's stunning composition "I'm Not Your Fool Anymore." Indeed. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

I don't know what happened to my copy of this album, but I must have worn holes in it when it came out. There is such a fantastic mix in this collection. Slow, rich tunes that take you away, and if memory serves me right -- blaring horn samba/latin style numbers that make you want to shake it! Teddy Edwards is an underrated master on the tenor saxophone. His peers often overshadowed him, and I had hoped that this album might bring him to light via the relatively reliable Gitanes label, as well as the pairing of such a highly visible guest vocalist as Tom Waits.

A note to any Tom Waits fan: there are two gems on this album that will blow you away... The heartfelt and classic "Little Man" and the bluesy caterwauling of "I'm not your fool." They stand alone from any previous Waits albums, and have a unique dignity and class in this particular context.

If Teddy leads you to Tom, or Tom leads you to Teddy, you'll be a happy customer either way. It's worth the wait of trying to get your hands on this one.

And if you have my copy -- please give it back.
