Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has plotted something of a musical world tour on From the Green Hill, a polyglot of styles rooted in different folk and traditional forms colliding and commingling over a bedrock of collective improvisations. Stanko's music is surely jazz, if the genre's defined as an international language and no longer simply an American art form--clearly rooted in American traditions, but a flexible flyer capable of transcending borders and incorporating the vocabulary and traditions of the musicians who create it. In that broader vein, From the Green Hill is a varied and satisfying recital, which clearly reflects the aesthetic of producer Manfred Eicher, who has been encouraging the development of post-modernist folk music and idiomatic European jazz inventions since the early 1970s. Stanko's dark, burnished sound brings to mind both Rex Stewart and Lester Bowie, as he favors broad, vocalized inflections and an expressive vocabulary of bends, growls, whinnies, and shouts. Yet, as his whimsical lead over the fat, lilting groove of bassist Anders Jormin and the airy, percussive accents and crystalline cymbal phrases of drummer Jon Christensen on "Pantronic" demonstrate, Stanko's is a decidedly lyrical approach. You can hear it on the lightly swinging "Love Theme from Farewell to Maria," as saxophonist John Surman's furry baritone italicizes Stanko's pungent phrasing. Elsewhere, the violin of Michelle Makarski and the bandoneon of Dino Saluzzi offer savory overtones from Warsaw, Paris, and Buenos Aires. --Chip Stern

good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

A very fine Dame Kiri .......2006-01-05

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was never between my favourite singers but I have to admit that she is really a respectable artist and this lovely cd proves how versatile she is and how she managed to keep a fresh and mellow tone even in her fifties. She is really at her best in the extracts from Citizen Kane and the operetta The Enchanteress. It's a pity that no Verdi music is included in the program, Kiri Te Kanawa was a great Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) and a moving Desdemona. A very fine Dame Kiri indeed.

OK. I'm going to go out on a limb here. This is, IMHO, Dame Kiri's finest recorded performance.

Kiri's exquisite voice and expansive repertoire make for an unbeatable combination which reaches its crescendo on this special evening. A full symphony orchestra, two choruses, a jazz trio, and even a tenor (!) help Kiri in celebrating her 50th birthday. (That's her chronological age, the voice is timeless.) The hall's accoustics are excellent and orchestra and audience support without intruding. One of the reasons why I love Kiri's singing is that I believe she sings the songs the way the composer wanted them to be sung without the sometimes annoying embellishments employed by others. Kiri includes songs sung in her ancestral Maori in a program that takes the listener from the opera house to Broadway and then to an intimate jazz club. I love live concerts because I feel most artists are at their best before a live audience and this cd is proof. I don't believe that there is another artist recording today that has covered such a wide range of song styles and done it with such beauty and skill. This disc is confirmation. If you only buy one Kiri cd, make it this one. But don't be surprised if you start buying many more!

The first time I ever heard the voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. I still can't pronounce her name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. She is a gift to us all. This CD is very welcome.

Her technique is spotless, her tonality marvelous, and her intonation superb! For those worried about Kiri's "maturing" sound; age has brought a "different" soprano, but one just as lovely as ever...

The selection of music was fabulous, such a variety brings about an interesting and lively effect...

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has plotted something of a musical world tour on From the Green Hill, a polyglot of styles rooted in different folk and traditional forms colliding and commingling over a bedrock of collective improvisations. Stanko's music is surely jazz, if the genre's defined as an international language and no longer simply an American art form--clearly rooted in American traditions, but a flexible flyer capable of transcending borders and incorporating the vocabulary and traditions of the musicians who create it. In that broader vein, From the Green Hill is a varied and satisfying recital, which clearly reflects the aesthetic of producer Manfred Eicher, who has been encouraging the development of post-modernist folk music and idiomatic European jazz inventions since the early 1970s. Stanko's dark, burnished sound brings to mind both Rex Stewart and Lester Bowie, as he favors broad, vocalized inflections and an expressive vocabulary of bends, growls, whinnies, and shouts. Yet, as his whimsical lead over the fat, lilting groove of bassist Anders Jormin and the airy, percussive accents and crystalline cymbal phrases of drummer Jon Christensen on "Pantronic" demonstrate, Stanko's is a decidedly lyrical approach. You can hear it on the lightly swinging "Love Theme from Farewell to Maria," as saxophonist John Surman's furry baritone italicizes Stanko's pungent phrasing. Elsewhere, the violin of Michelle Makarski and the bandoneon of Dino Saluzzi offer savory overtones from Warsaw, Paris, and Buenos Aires. --Chip Stern

This is another record where several titles should be put into the "ECM Scrapbook" (for a definition see my comments under Bobo Stenson's "Serenity"). But the last title of the CD, "Argentyna", is overwhelming, and some others are quite good as well. Unfortunately Dino Saluzzi gets too little exposure with his bandoneon, however, he sparkles in "Argentyna".

I played this disk for a friend and fellow jazz fan - we both lament the backward-looking nature of contemporary American jazz - and he turned to me, after a moment of awe following Stone Ridge, and wondered aloud if Wynton Marsalis has heard this music. And if he has, what does he think? We both concluded that Marsalis ought to be thinking, "Stanko is kicking my butt." Not that Stanko is a better trumpeter, Marsalis is a brilliant player, but it's just that Stanko is forging ahead creatively, mining the available techniques, music and talent to make astonishing art. Meanwhile, Marsalis and other American talents like Joshua Redman, Wallace Roney etc. seem to be wishing it were 1958 all over again. Just go to the list of latest Jazz releases and you'll find half or more are retrospectives. And if they're not looking back in time they're riding the coattails of hip-hop. Stanko's "From the Green Hill" proves to me that Jazz isn't an antique; there's still quality work to be done that's fresh and interesting.

An elegant fusion.......2000-09-09

This disc follows the pattern of much of ECM's recent output in deploying a carefully assembled band in a highly democratic manner, often breaking it down to smaller groupings for a series of short tracks; the album features the leader, the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, only slightly more prominently than the other musicians. Stanko is about as far from ECM's other favourite trumpeter, Kenny Wheeler, as you can get--he has a passionate, vocalized, rough sound that is like no one else's in the music except perhaps occasionally Dave Douglas. He's in the past managed to fit into contexts running from straightahead jazz to folk musics to electronica to the band of Cecil Taylor (the superlative _Winged Serpent, Sliding Quadrants_).

On this album he's joined by John Surman on baritone & bass clarinet, Dino Saluzzi on bandoneon, Michelle Makarski on violin (an excellent player I've never heard before, though sadly she only appears on a few tracks), & the expert European rhythm section of Anders Jormin on bass & Jon Christensen on drums. The music is lively & atmospheric--Surman is in ebullient mood (much more so than on some of his own albums like _The Road to St. Ives_), & the bassist & drummer are endlessly inventive. The dynamic range here is exceedingly wide, which I wasn't expecting for an ECM disc--the bandoneon will let things settle into a melancholy & reflective mood, & then Stanko will let 'er rip or Christensen will boot things along.

This disc manages to be both beautiful & sharply intelligent. One might especially point fans of Dave Douglas's forays into European folk & classical musics in the direction of this disc, but I'd imagine that anyone interested in good contemporary jazz will enjoy it. Listeners might also check out some of Stanko's work with Bobo Stenson, Jormin & the British drummer Tony Oxley--they've released a number of discs on GOWI & ECM.

This new release by Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko will likely be stocked in the Jazz section of most record shops, but that categorization does not begin to describe the majestic music on this astonishing album. Stanko has joined forces with a who's-who of international avant garde jazz and classical musicians to create this sonic painting. His co-conspirators include master Argentine bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi, violinist Michelle Makarski from Detroit, Swedish double-bassist Anders Jormin, Norwegian drummer Jon Christensen, and Englishman John Surman on baritone sax and bass clairnet. Who could have ever dreamed up such an eclectic assemblage of instrumentation? Listen to the opening bars of the first song, Surman's "Domino," however, and you will swear that these instruments were made for each other. The tones and timbre of violin, bandoneon, and bass clarinet are ideally suited to each other, allowing Stanko's trumpet to wind its way in and out of the other sounds with serpentine fluidity. The sextet moves from mournful to joyous at the drop of a hat, evoking colors and moods and emotions with their fine interplay. This is modern jazz at its finest---a blend of traditional jazz, folk music, and classic sounds that breathes with a new life.

The Master of the Wind Orchestra.......2001-02-20

I know of no composer or arranger who writes more beautifully for wind orchestra than Percy Grainger. It is a difficult medium, much harder than an orchestra to make sound terrific. This is probably due to the lack of a single homogenous sound equivalent to the orchestra's strings. The woodwinds are too diverse in timbre, and the brass generally can't sustain (physically) the constant playing such a role demands. But Grainger consistently rises above these problems and gets the most gorgeous sounds from the group. Furthermore, he writes fascinating counterpoints and the whole is constantly filled with eccentric touches of harmony, orchestration, rhythm, and the like.

This recording, with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, is superbly played. Although one may quibble at times with such things as an occasionally too-wide saxophone vibrato, those are minor indeed. In particular, the classics of the wind orchestra literature, Irish Tune from County Derry and Linconshire Posy (the movements Harkstow Grange and Rufford Park Poachers stand out even in this august company), are magnificent in every respect. Also worthy of note is the Colonial Song, with its beautiful sonorities; and the vibrant percussion of The 'Gum-Suckers' March. This CD is a must-have for anyone interested in wind music, in the art of arranging, or simply in imaginative and fascinating music.

This ensemble really does a good job playing on this CD--The Lads of Wamphray, Irish Tune from County Derry and Molly on the Shore in particular. Personally, I don't care for their interpretation of Lincolnshire Posy. However, it's still some great playing. Wonderful job!

They were born to play Grainger........1999-05-24

I have been playing Grainger since my freshman year in high school and never have I heard Grainger played with so much passion as when I listened to this recording of the Royal Northern College of Music. Lincolnshire Posy shines brighter than even the Eastman Wind Ensemble's greatest rendition. Bravo!

The tunes in John Playford's The English Dancing Master have been recorded frequently and are a staple in English country dance circles. Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band present here some of the best renditions of these tunes that are currently available on CD. I strongly recommmed this CD for anyone interested in Renaissance music, country dance music, or just plain ole' fun music.
