When I listen to Swing out Sister.......2007-02-22
I get the sensation of the wind in my hair as I downshift my powder-blue Jaguar convert climbing the British country hillsides. A mini-skirted mod girl to my left smiles underneath her Jackie-O sunglasses. Driving up, I take a space between an Austin Healey and a group of pastel Vespa scooters. At the party in the most elegantly understated of villas is a very black haired debonaire Sean Connery charming none other than Anne Margaret. I spy Emma Peel in her catsuit, and Andy Warhol drinking in the scene and his Madeira. Barbara Feldon is laughing over her cocktail and Hors d'oeuvres at Sid Caesar's antics. Sunshine glints across the pool, and everyone turns as Corinne Drewery clears her throat and Andy Connell gives her her pitch...
I gave in to Amazon's insistance that people who liked Basia also like Swing out Sister. OK, but there are big differences. Give any student of progressive jazz any recording of Basia with Matt Bianco and they will be blown away. The chord progressions, rythmn, and sophistication of the music is a delight. Matt Bianco is a musician's musician.
Swing out Sister is studio music. The synth stuff doesn't work well on a good system. You Ipod lovers won't notice. No wonder their live stuff sounds thin. They overtrack, overdub, and synthesize their way to a very big sound. It actually sounds close to real in the Where our Love Grows release, but in the tracks from the 80s, it is glaringly artificial. But then, I have a 10k high definition stereo. Never mind.
That said, I love this music. It is danceable, uplifting and addictive. I'll take Corinne's voice over Basia--more pleasant. It takes a certain taste. If you like the samples buy and you'll feel like you've made a great discovery, and you have.
Where's Waiting Game?.......2006-11-21
How can they release a Best of without including 'Waiting Game'?!! Some of these records companies suck. I'm glad illegal downloading is eating away at their profits, especially when they make such glaring omissions. Karma's a biatch, ain't it?
music lover.......2005-08-08
This is the CD to have for any SOS fan! Every song is better than the next. Personal faves are: "Breakout", "Tainted", "Between Strangers" & "Precious Words". These songs sound like what made SOS famous & every song has a great, bouncy, jazzy quality to it. If you are only buying one SOS cd, make it this one.
A must have !.......2002-12-01
This band had its great breakthrough with the stellar "breakout", from the impossible to equal (for them at least) "It's better to travel". That album was played everywhere in Madrid when it was released, and I even had a neighbour who had it playing constantly. She had the cd at home and the tape version for her car (at that time, there were few cd players for cars and no MDs).
Well, many years have gone by and I had been thinking about getting that album on cd for myself, after having worn out my tape copy. Then, I decided to get this one. I found it to be a real collection of their finest moments. The journey takes you from 1985 to 1994, and contains several (slightly edited) tracks of their most famous tunes from their stellar album. There is a clear change of style midway through this album, mainly due to line-up changes of the band throughout the years. However, I must say I was not disappointed by those tracks I had never heard before, except for track 16, an ear breaker. For instance, you have a very soul Curtis Mayfield / Marvin Gaye type of atmosphere on track 12. Track 13 has that happy feeling and rythm that makes you want to tap your feet on the floor. Track 14, a mid tempo with a jazzy touch, could be played in any of those elegant bars in major capitals around the world. The closer, a brilliant 3 minute instrumental, has a sort of romantic Parisian-like atmosphere that also brings back special memories to me...
If you like British-like pop soul with "elegant" touches, unfortunately unfit for the US market, this is an album for you. The Japanese apparently love this band. Swing Out sister might make you think a bit about Matt Bianco (same era) or Working Week, or even Nick Heyward. If you like these artists, you will also like this cd. It's a great quality pop album, and a good compilation.
Now, my next move is to get "It's better to travel" on cd...
Martini's & Bikini's.......2001-12-30
Let's begin this review with a question that has baffled me for years now. Which, simply put is, why hasn't this incredible U.K. group Swing Out Sister become a huge success here in America? They have all the correct ingrediants i.e. attractive female lead, infectious melodies and adult lyrics, that you can actually sing while in the privacy of your shower ( I know I have ). Yet, here in this country they probably couldn't even get arrested. It certainly doesn't bode well for the state of 'Pop' music here in the U.S. when artists of dubious talent such as Jewel are able to push more cd's out of the store than this incredible band. It's more than just a shame but...
Being a fan of this wonderful duo ( which actually began as a trio! ) I'll certainly do my part to sing their praises. The release of " Breakout " is an import compilation that includes not only their biggest hit to date," Breakout " but also a host of other songs that, while they may not seem recognizable at first, will soon become so. Highlight's for me include, " Am I the Same Girl ", " Notgonnachange " and " Blue Mood ", the last being an infectious bluesy number that I'm listening to right now. Heck, half the fun in owning this disc is finding out which tunes you like best! SOS's forte in writing tunes is simply putting together wonderful melodies with insightful lyrics and a spice of smooth jazz and R&B thrown in for good measure. This is truly Britpop at it's very best and, other than Lisa Stansfield, I can think of no other group that performs this style of music any better than SOS. And while I'm sure some listener's may consider this style a little too slick and contemporary for their taste that may be the reason I enjoy this band as much as I do. The entire disc carries a slightly nightclub/martini aura about it that feels just right. They don't pretend to anything other than what they set out to do....and I find that terribly refreshing.
In ending, if you prefer your music slightly jazzy with a 'pop' sensibility than please give Swing Out Sister a try. I've given this disc away as gifts on several occassions and the recipients never fail to tell me how thrilled they are with this 'new group' SOS! Well, who am I to ruin their fun! So run and pick up your copy of " Breakout " and soon you'll be a true trend setter in your neighborhood. And, with... pricing this disc at a budget rate, than you've no excuse as to why your not at home, listening to SOS, and dancing around your living room floor, singing with sheer abandonment. Just make sure you put something on when step out of that shower! Thanks

Customer Reviews:
Wow, I never thought I'd see this one again!.......2007-06-03
I also was first exposed to this group in the early to mid 80s on MTV. Then a boyfriend at the time owned the LP and made a copy for me on cassette (I know, bad us) which I no longer have. I played it to death back then and have tried to find it several times with no luck.
My husband, who loves 50s music, also loves this CD. The only thing I don't love?? THE PRICE. I think this was the most expensive single disk I've ever bought. But I bought it anyway, so there you go. I'm glad I have it.
Once again, the Japanese reissue a pop classic.......2005-02-08
It seems that if it were not for the Japanese we would not have CD reissues of some of my favorite pop music of all time. This was one of my favorite "not a bad cut on the whole thing" albums of the early '80s, but I owned it only on LP and have not been able to find it in any other form for two decades. I'm so delighted to be able to get a copy of it now. (Actually, my US version of the LP was missing the title track...I wonder who made the decision not to include it! Duh!) Back before Brian Setzer invented swing music in 1997 (yes, that WAS a joke) and all the bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers and the like came along, these guys were already making music to jitterbug to. Had they not had the "Stand By" video on MTV, though, I might never have heard of them. Lucky I took a chance on this album and loved it. Unfortunately it was not time yet for a revival of this kind of music and I seemed to be the only one listening. I was extremely disappointed with their followup album, in which the group was stripped of all its "swing" sound and homogenized to sound exactly like Wham!, possibly with the idea in mind that if they sounded like Wham! they too would have hit records. (And it wasn't difficult given that Steve Lambert sings just like George Michael.) End result: their uniqueness was gone. And they broke up soon after, I believe. If you enjoyed any of the swing music revival of the late '90s, get this!
U.K. Does the 50s.......2005-01-15
Roman Holliday was a sample of the UKs "New Pop" retro-direction in the alleged post-punk 80s (I never was a fan of punk, but accept that there's room for everybody). I first saw them on MTv in their "Stand By" video. Being a US child of the 50s, I took to them, bought the cassette for my Walkman and enjoyed the escape.
However, I won't be laying out the salty bucks for the CD reissues of "Cooking On The Roof" or "Fire Me Up". Unfortunately and inexplicably, 2 prime cuts included on the cassette and b-side 45s, "Beat My Time" and "Round & Round", do not appear on the CD (weren't on the vinyl album either, but still....).
What is it with these record industry compilers, always excluding a quintessential cut on any given so-called "quintessential" anthology? :( And this, the CD bonus cut era!!! I've settled for near mint copies of both vinyl albums plus the aforesaid 45 b-sides which I got off ebaY.
A long-lost gem from the '80s.......2004-04-24
It's pretty amazing to finally get Roman Holliday's debut album on CD. The original cassette kept me entertained for years until the thing wore out. Roman Holliday's music -- brassy, joyous and energetic -- helped provide the soundtrack for my high school years. Highlighted by the warm voice of charismatic lead singer Steve Lambert, the group created a killer debut, fueled by the singles "Don't Try To Stop It" and "Stand By." But the rest of the disc is remarkably consistent, including the pseudo ballad "Serious Situation" and the delightful "Midnight Bus." This stuff predated the swing revival by years, but is more energetic and original than almost anything to come out of that scene.
Roman Holliday completely changed their sound (no more swing) and image (no more sailor hats) for their second and final album, "Fire Me Up." Still, it's a fine disc -- hopefully that will be coming out on CD some time soon.
Finally- a lost gem out on CD!.......2004-03-11
I am really glad to see this classic lost 80s debut album on CD, finally. Too bad it is such a pricey import. One of the first bands signed to Jive (back when it was a British New Wave label, something the current label seems determined to forget), Roman Holiday was discovered by Boy George and toured with Culture Club around the UK.
However, the band does not sound like Culture Club, rather they mix New Wave attitudes with Swing (back before Swing came back). And to top it off, they had a batch of killer tunes, tight vocal harmonies and a fun, shiny brass section that kept the music upbeat and happy.
Standout tracks include "IOU," "Motormania" "Stand By" and the "big" hit here in the US - "Don't Try to Stop It." The band manages to mixes a bunch of styles, from 50s doo-wop to UK New Romantic disoc, it was just too bad that most of those styles were passé in the early 80s.
This album is a little gem and will please those who enjoy good pop music with a beat. The songs are shiny, bright and while close inspections of the lyrics reveal the band were no Pollyanna, it will lift your spirits and set your toes a tapping. Come discover a truly lost treasure from the 80s.

A Talent Ahead Of His Time! Harry Connick Jr........2004-04-10
I recently discovered this CD and I have been listening to it non-stop for over three weeks now. The overwhelming talent and musical vision of this jazz icon never ceases to amaze me. Who would have ever imagined back in 1993 when this album was released that 11 years later we would be experiencing the greatest resurgence of interest in songs from the Great American Songbook ever. Almost single handedly he has managed to create a new fresh awareness to these musical jewels, and even now in 2004 he continues to reacquaint the world to these classics. His original interpretations of these timeless tunes brings them back to life, and proves once more that these perfectly crafted songs will last forever.
If you LOVE listening to GREAT CROONERS and BIG BAND SWING, I would also recommend, MONTE PROCOPIO "SWINGIN' WITH STYLE" CD. He is also a Great Crooner that can really SWING and deserves a listen. Buy both these CDs, you can't go wrong!
Never bought an import.......2000-12-16
Can you list the titles on this cd? Where was it recorded? Why is it an import?
A big HC fan
"The Best of" Harry Connick Jr........2000-04-20
This CD is perfect for those who want the classic Big Band Harry. It combines the more popular tracks from "We are in Love" and "When Harry Met Sally", along with a track each from "Lofty's Roach Souffle" and "The Godfather Part III".
Smooth vocals, the magic of Big Band and excellent songs come together to make this CD the ideal way to fall in love with Harry's music!
Best of that guy from "Independence Day" (not Will Smith).......1998-07-18
Ok, Connick fans, listen up. I bought the cassette while in Mexico and have waited for its US release so I could get the CD, but that still hasn't happened. Thank goodness for imports! You know how good the "When Harry met Sally" soundtrack is? This one's way better. I'm not a die-hard fan, but this CD really holds my attention all the way through and even gets me singing along. This CD gives you stuff from Harry's whole career: different sounds, different attitudes, all of the highest quality. So even if you are just a borderline fan of Harry Connick or of this genre of music, I'd highly recommend this CD. (If you already have all of the Connick CD's then I'd pass on this since there's no new stuff on it.) By the way, I liked this record so much, I bought the company.

Customer Reviews:
This is why Tom Jones is so great........2000-12-14
If you've heard Tom Jones sing and love the sound but can't take the Vegas schmaltz, this is the album to get. Tom can sing anything with anyone: he growls, he soars, he hits notes that a man his age (sorry, Tom) has no damn business hitting.
I read an interview with Tom years ago where he said that he thinks his continuing success comes from knowing when to "take the pee out of yourself" (which translates to "make fun of yourself" in American English). I think that that's how he can pull off asides like "T.J.'s in the house with phat beats from the streets." ("Something for your head") Don't be frightened -- he wisely stops short of actually rapping.
From soulful, melty ballads like "I wanna get back with you" to the self-esteem anthem "I don't think so" ("failure wants to play tapes in your head -- will you just lay there in your bed? No, I don't think so!") this album shows off the incredible range of a truly talented vocalist to whom stereotyping has not been quite fair. If you really need Tom's particular brand of charming smarm, there's "Show Me," and if you get halfway through "Lift me Up" without becoming the backup singer you always know you could be, well, you have more restraint than I.
Check this out -- it ain't Delilah!
A different Tom Jones...........2000-10-27
This album starts off with a roar (literally) with "If I Only Knew", a song that perfectly highlights the fantastic power in Tom's voice. The rest of the album is a strange collection of songs, many nothing like fans of traditional Tom Jones would be used to hearing. There are some great tracks with the typical Jones voice in full flight - I particularly like "Changes" the last song featured. I enjoy this album for the variety it offers and the fact that it moves right away from the "cabaret style" on many of Tom's greatest hits. Besides, the cover has one of the best shots of Tom in a mesh singlet I've ever seen! Worth buying.

Before Leon Redbone's ineffable 1975 debut, On the Track, appeared, rumors circulated that this offbeat presence was actually a Bob Dylan alter ego. Given Dylan's winning croon on his Sopranos cover of "Return to Me," the distance between the song-poet's wisdom and Redbone's friendly Tin Pan Alley exhumations has shrunk somewhat of late. Anytime, while hardly as surprising as his earliest work, finds Redbone still making small, intriguing connections between material as far afield as blackface entertainer Emmett Miller's (and later, Eddy Arnold's) classic title tune, Jelly Roll Morton's "Sweet Substitute," and "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree." Applying his pleasant Bing-meets-Jimmie Rodgers murmur to the impossibly hoary likes of "Moonlight Bay" and "Blossoms on Broadway," Redbone achieves some of the album's most indelible moments; the dream world he conjures is irresistible. Anytime's small-band jazz arrangements make it fine comfort music, with the guest clarinets of Ken Peplowski, Bob Gordon, and Dan Levinson a particularly welcome touch. Those not familiar with the pleasure Redbone can give should first buy On the Track, but longtime fans will no doubt appreciate this new addition to his discography. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
SWEET SWEET JAZZ.......2004-08-16
No one in music today sings quite like this. Leon Redbone evokes one of the most beautiful eras of American musical expression: DIXIELAND JAZZ and BLUES VOCALS. His voice is like a smooth old malt scotch: IT GOES DOWN EASY. This is sweet, sweet jazz music. Also be sure to get UP A LAZY RIVER. Superb music from a superlative vocal stylist. It's hard to believe more people aren't into this man. Enjoy it now, before this kind of music is gone for good. GIMME SOME MORE OF THAT SMOOTH OL' ORLEANS JAZZ LEON!! I LOVE IT!!
I'm hiring this guy to play my wedding.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2003-11-01
This CD is absolutely wonderful! Leon is still the king of inciteful, soul-filled renditions of old songs and one of the best creators of new songs. I highly recommend this CD to anyone, ANYTIME!
Ear Candy!.......2003-06-19
O Gawd! My happy aentenna vibrated like a tuning fork when the first notes of "Anytime" burst from my speakers! Delicious, delightful, decadently different! I have other offerings from The Bone, but this cd is all sweets, all the way through. Redbone sets moods, paints vingettes with his music here. The title track "Anytime" is nostalgic and sexy somehow. "Your Feets Too Big" is sheer fun, sing it with your kids. Slow dance with your sweety in a candlelit room to "Moonlight Bay". This is a collection of charming, offbeat, amusing and gentle music for young and old. Fingers and toes will tap, shoulders will swivel, heads will nod, and you will find yourself singing along with the simple tunes involuntarily. Why fight it? Enjoy!
Classic Leon Returns.......2002-08-22
This album is definitely for those who appreciate the classic sounds of Leon Redbone. If you were disappointed in previous recent albums that seemed to depart from the Redbone style of his early years, you will be in for a treat with this album. It sounds more like early Leon Redbone than the early albums did! A definite "thumbs up" for this one is in order.
A return to Form.......2001-10-09
Finally Leon Redbone has released a great CD of music from beginning to end. This is a return to form that was last heard back in 1992 with "Up a lazy river".
My hats off to Mr. Redbone for coming up with another set of great listening that will last for years to come!

Jazz Blues at its best.......2007-01-31
Paris was the place to be before and after WWII, and Jazz in Paris captures some of those immortal moments such as Django's Blues. This is a wonderful introdution to the great guitarist as he plays some classic pieces such as Septermber Song, Brazil and Blues Primitif. The disc is divided into two performances at the Le Quintette de Hot Club in 1947, with his brother Joseph joining him on the second set on rhythm guitar. The series is beautifully packaged and you will love checking out the many other titles such as Django and Company, which includes Stephane Grappelli.
Incredible Guitarist.......2005-09-26
Django Reinhardt is an incredible guitarist and probably the most rated Gypsy Jazz player. Django played guitar in his own style and rhythm as he was caught in fire when he was 18 years old. The doctors tried to ampute his hand but he denies it. On that time, Django was presented with a guitar which have shown him the light of success. If you are into Jazz and love Swing music, then you can buy this one. This is a nice album.

Ultimate Collection by Swing Out Sister.......2007-01-05
This is a great selection of hits for the die hard Swing Out Sister fans. Or if you simply like good quality adult contemporary hits, this group delivers. Those that enjoy this CD set should also listen to their 2004 release, Where Our Love Grows as well as anything from their musical catalog.
Great Jazz, Great Pop, Great Music.......2005-08-30
Buy this CD package. You will not regret it. From start to finish the music is positive, it is musical, it varies from a very few ballads to a lot of swing to a little straight ahead jazz.
I've heard this referred to as "Bacharach" style 60's music. Yes, it is orchestrated that way...Petula Clark material also comes to mind.
SoS has a definitive sound, they tell a story and it makes for great listening.
Pay close attention to "Fooled by a Smile", "Somewhere in the World", to name two good examples of classic SoS creativity and sound.
Every tune is worth a listen and all three CDs together make an easy ride on a trip or a relaxing period around the house.
Can't recommend this enough if you like music and are sick of the crap coming out of the record companies these days.
If you like rap...move along. This has a melody, orchestration and great lyrics well performed.
ONE SWINGING ANTHOLOGY!.......2005-08-04
For those of you who have purchased an S.O.S. album or two and found that you liked a few key songs, but thought the rest consisted of too many istrumentals, half-realized songs, reprises, accapellas, samples, etc...this collection is for you.
Ultimate Collection contains a generous number of songs from each album, but only the best tracks make the cut. In other words, the collection doesn't skimp (or skip over) any periods of the group's career. It gives you all the best without making you sift through the excess of their individual albums. Yes, you could purchase the 20th Century Masters single-disc "best of," but you'd be cheating yourself out of many great songs. From one casual fan to another, (you know who you are) Ultimate Collection is worth the price and the number of discs.
An "Almost Perfect" Collection.......2005-06-19
Swing Out Sister (a.k.a. Corinne drewery and Andy Connell) have evolved from a synth-dance-pop style of music twenty years ago, to a Bossa Nova/late night jazz fusion, especially since 1997's Shapes and Patterns C.D.. Between those two styles they experimented with northern soul (Get in Touch with Yourself) and acid jazz (The Living return). However, their roots are clearly centered in jazz and around such celebrated songwriters as Jim Webb (who did arrangements on the Kaleidoscope World album), Burt bacharach and john Barry. In fact, the song You On My Mind (from kaleidoscopw World) is reminiscent to Jim Webb's, Up, Up and Away! These influences, along with S.O.S.'s own trademark sound result in an infectious fusion of pop, lounge and Bossa Nova.
I purchased the Ultimate Collection about this time last year, soon after purchasing their latest studio C.D., Where Our Love grows. I initially wasn't going to buyt this collection since I have nearly ALL of the C.D.s (domestic and import). However, because of the inclusion of the song, Windmills of Your Mind, the collection automatically deserves five stars. Windmills of Your Mind was the theme song from the movie, Thomas Crown Affair. Swing out Sister;s version was originallyavailable ONLY as a B-side to one of their U.K. singles from Kaleidoscope World. Later, the song was intended to be included on S.O.S.'s Best of C.D., from 1996. Instead, it was replaced with a new song, Heaven Only Knows. FINALLY it has been included on this collection (on the bonus disc). Their version of "Windmills" is very intimate in its sound and pensive in its mood, with only Andy's acoustic piano and Corinne's crystalline, yearning voice. Had this version been available when the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair was released a few years ago. perhaps it might have been considered over Sying's version.
To be fair, the rest of the collection is also very good. The price is very reasonable considering it is a 3-C.D. set. The selection of songs is very representative of their albums (although I don't know why none of the songs from the C.D., Filth and Dreams were included on the collection). The sound quality is greatly enhanced by the 32-bit remastering. My only complaint is that the bonus disc could have been longer in length and should have included the extended mix of You On My Mind as well as the song, The Spirit Moves., The Collection would then be perfect!
SHOULD BE 10 STARS for QUALITY of SOUND.......2004-12-11
WITH IT'S IMPROVED DYNAMIC RANGE and GREATER SIGNAL to NOISE RATIO and AT LEAST A 6db GAIN in VOLUME . THIS 32 bit CD BLOWS ALL OTHER S. O. S. CD's AWAY . THIS IS A MUST HAVE if YOU ARE A FAN of S. O .S. MY VTL Tube Amps and KLIPSCHHORNS HAVE NEVER SOUNDED BETTER .

music lover.......2005-06-22
Just a warning to any other potential buyers of this CD. There are only vocals on track #1. The rest of it is instrumental versions of the same song. When I purchased it, I was not aware of this. I would have prefered 8 different songs or maybe one instrumental, such as the "Desolate Shores" version, which in my opinion, was the best. This CD does have a light, breezy, jazzy feel to it. Several of the versions, such as "Deep Siesta" sounded like something Henry Mancini would have done.

since this ep is of only one song with different colors, flavors and textures each one offers a shade in emoting the song perfectly.
this is a japanese import. at the time i was searching for this ep for months and paid alot of bank for it and i have to say it has been worth the money and time it took to find.NOW YOU'RE NOT HERE is the tune the ballad the song that holds the glue to the journey of each of the eight ways to express the directness and the honesty of this track. i deeply appreciate this release and all of swing out sisters' recordings.it has spice, light and substance. try and get a copy if you can do not dely when it becomes more easily available.
Many Ways to Say: "Now You're Not Here....".......2002-01-12
"Big Elsewhere" album is a good surprise about how many different ways you could find to say or express "Now You're Not Here" (song previously featured on "Shapes & Patterns" album). Here you can find 8 versions of this melody (R&B with string arrangements, Acoustic piano solo, Jazzy with horns, on Hammond C3 organ with Acoustic guitar, Smooth Jazz version with vibes, etc.) I must say that all these are interesting and perfectly performed by the group and orchestra (undoubtedly with the SOS signature behind each), so you all surely will enjoy when listen it....
