From Jazziz
Gerald Veasley believes the bass should be upfront and in your face, and that's where he keeps it on his new album, Love Letters. "The bass has a role that is much richer than just providing support," says the six-string electric bassist. "It's an instrument with a voice second to no other." Keyboardist Joe Zawinul, who's employed Veasley in the past, agrees with the philosophy. "The bass is going to attain equality now that certain devices can give it an almost guitar-type quality to play solos," he says. "There is someone out there - and Gerald Veasley is the one - who will bring the instrument to the level where all instruments are."

"Free at last / Out here on my own," Janet Jackson sings on the title track of her 1986 blockbuster, Control, an album about personal liberation, romantic longing, and, of all things, sexual responsibility. After two albums of middling dance-pop that were comfortably in the Jackson family mold, Janet dropped in on the burgeoning Minneapolis funk factory of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and came up with five top 10 hits, including the opening triad of "Control," "Nasty," and "What Have You Done for Me Lately," as well as the yearning "When I Think of You" and "Let's Wait Awhile," that rare song (considering some of Janet's hits to come) about not having sex. In its own way, Control is the most convincing declaration of artistic independence since Stevie Wonder's "Music of My Mind." --Daniel Durchholz

    5 out of 5 stars Helpless.......2006-07-17

This five man team founded by triple threat producer, artist and writer Keith Sweat, Silk's debut Lose Control would sure to incorporate Sweat's formula with a touch of harmony. Eight of the ten songs were written and or co-written by Keith Sweat and he held down the project's production either single handedly or with some help. "Interlude" is a great opener for this LP with the simple phrase "...baby, don't stop..." that welcomes the listener to the ride. With the overly used James Brown "The Payback" may sound as if it would not be a good idea, but used on "Happy Days" had the bounce, swing and groove for repeats. Featuring Gerald and Sean Levert on "Don't Keep Me Waiting" is overall simple in the production scheme aspect. The gem is hidden with the various vocalists' textures and tones that make this hard to overlook. Slowing down on "Girl U For Me" even has Keith Sweat aiding to benefit on the ad-libs and background vocals for the mood setting. Taking the extreme sexual connotations to drive "Freak Me" will not have you saying stop. "Baby It's You" has a mid-tempo flavor that has the elements of crowd movers that could get them going. Silk's talents become apparent in the last lap where first comes the title track. With the delayed drum kick and mostly keyboard / piano laced track was subtle yet strong enough to tailor to the again multi-vocal ranges. Keeping the fire going, "It Had To Be You" isn't as memorable as the title track but can still hold its own with the colorful harmony. "I Gave To You" says all that you may be thinking and feeling while involving yourself with anyone without any compromises. In short, play Lose Control and watch what could happen!

4 out of 5 stars Freak Me Baby..........2004-06-23

Silk had an indescribable knack for creating baby making jams. They just did it better than most people coming out at the time and that made them stand out. The title track Lose Control epitomizes this group. Slow, sensual, and romantic type music. They had other hits (Freak Me and It Hat To Be You) and albums but this is the main release that you will need from them as it is their best and contains their best songs. Great 90's R&B!

5 out of 5 stars Why you should buy this CD............2004-02-21

Looking back at all the CD's that came out in the early 90's, I'd say Silk's "Lose Control" is one of the few that has stood the test of time. The whole CD is worth listening to. Silk is not like H-Town or Jodeci, where you buy the CD for the singles and ignore the rest of the CD, which is essentially filler. Also, Silk's style is true to their name: their soul is smooth, not whiny, like the direction a lot of New Jack groups took.

My personal favorites are "Happy Days", "Girl U for Me", "Freak Me", which is sensual without being tasteless, and "Lose Control".

    5 out of 5 stars heavy.......2004-01-19

this is a heavy, heavy album. I first heard this album when I was 13 and the tunes still sound as sweet as ever. I can't belive i found a place to buy it again thank u.

    5 out of 5 stars Silk's Lose Control is a perfect record........2003-10-14

Lose Control is so so hot. Recently it is my favorite music.
My favorite songs are "Freak Me", "Girl U For Me", "Happy Days" and "I Gave To You".
Happy Days is new jack, funky, nice sound.
Girl U For Me is Fresh, Melodic, Angelic and Love.
I Gave To You is Beautiful keyboard ballad.
Freak Me is 92's greatest single. It is too hot.

I love this CD! The choice of songs are great. I can't wait to get into my car and play the songs over and over. I can't help but sing the words all day long....

5 out of 5 stars "GIMME LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE--CRAAAZY LOVE!".......2002-07-03

What can I say? This is Outstanding. It has something for both men and women. Most of the tracks are for WOMEN; however, I think when a man sees "his lady" happy, he's happy too, right? Ha. There are some sultry female voices for men too though: tracks 10, 12, 13, and especially track 16 by the late, great Aaliyah. Every relationship needs music like this. I think BODY AND SOUL: NO CONTROL (SENSUAL SOUL COLLECTION) would be perfect to listen to BEFORE you see your loved one. Whether you work from home or on the commute home from the office, it is Sure to Loosen you up and make you feel, um, Romantic. Dancing to the music together or alone for your loved one, would be very pleasing and stimulating for both.

I love all the songs but must say what drew me was the first song. I heard it in the store and I was in a hurry--definitely not planning on buying anything; but as soon as I heard it, I closed my eyes and was Lost in the music. I felt myself Smile. MUSIC THAT DOES THAT TO ME IS A NO-BRAINER--IT IS GETTING PURCHASED! What cinched the sale was seeing the song, "I'll Make Love to You" by BoyzIIMen--I've Always loved that song.

Now that I've had time to listen to it all, my favorite tracks are: 1, 3!, 5, 7, 8!, 9 (I dedicate this song to my special someone!)16 and 17; however, I love every track! Get this and discover your favorites. There are no bad songs, no filler songs here. All the music is original songs by the original artists and digitally mastered for the best sound quality. My stereo system is happy and so am I.

To sum this up, in a word--YOWZA! (Good word! Ha.)

            Album Description

Marlon Saunders, the soulful voice behind 2003's Enter My Mind, hailed by Billboard, Vibe and Straight No Chaser as one of the best soul recordings in recent years, gives us the greatly anticipated A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions. Unlike most live albums, A Groove So Deep is not a recording of a performance before a screaming audience. For this project, Marlon decided to bring his band, Mood Control, together for a series of sessions in which the musicians experimented with different approaches to favorites from his critically-acclaimed debut release, Enter My Mind, and songs written especially for the new project. From over 14 hours of recorded material, Marlon selected just over 70 minutes to become A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions.

3 out of 5 stars She May Not Be In "Total Control", But Still A Solid Album (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-05-12

After comming off an excellent You Better Ask Somebody back in 1993, Yo Yo drops her fourth album "Total Control". Only 10 tracks long, this album has a different atmosphere than her previous. On this album, she sounds more grown up and a little more mature when you compare them to some of her previous albums. There are some tracks that came from left field, and something I didn't expect to hear though.

Starting with the first track "One For The Cuties" with MC Lyte. Yo Yo and Lyte do lay down some good rhymes about looking for and finding men. In fact, expect a number of those "I'm-glad-I-have-a-man-to-satisfy-my-needs" type of song on this album. "Yo Yo Funk" is one of the best songs on the album as she and Battlecat lays down a nice funky beat to rhyme to. Next is the "Bonnie And Clyde Theme II" that features Ice Cube. Both rappers made the prequel to the song on her previous album. This version of the song has a funky Roger Troutman sound bassline towards it, and I actually this one better than it's previous. The next track is an upbeat "Steady Risin" as she flows smoothly on the song. "Steady Risin'" has a nice beat as well by Tone Toven, as Yo Yo rhymes about getting a man in her life and has Dori singing the hook. "Tre' Ride" features MC Breed on the hook, and is a song about riding and bouncin in her car which I wasn't feeling too much, but it's still a solid song. "Body Work" features Teena Marie and is another song about getting a man in her life. "How Can I Be Down" features Ruff Dogg, and is solid boyfriend/girlfriend sounding cut, and has an upbeat Battlecat beat. "Thank Yo, Boo" is another upbeat song about gaining independance from a boyfriend, in which I find skippable. The final track "Yo Yo's Night" features Warren G., and could have been a good song, but her loud vocals make it skippable. If she would have rhymed in a softer voice, it would have been a real good track.

The overall albumis a solid but at the same time uneven. It has a lot of up beat production and mature type of lyrics, even though some of the subject matter may get repetative, and the fact there are a few hit or miss tracks. I would say out of the 10 tracks, about 6 or 7 of them I liked, in which I give this album a 7 out of 10. In this album, you will find Yo Yo to have a little more of a mature style, and not so much gangsta type tracks, as her last album has. This album is still better than some of the albums that came out in '96. If you can, I recommend that you purchase this album used. If you want to hear Yo-Yo at her full potential, I recommend you check out Black Pearl & You Better Ask Somebody. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Yo Yo goes old school........2007-03-11

This cd is really bangin. Much to the fact several songs on this release contain samples from old school jams from the past. You will hear alot of late 70's to 80's soul recording sample thru out this release, as well as some pretty slick rhymes...this sista got some skillz for real. Take time to listen to the clips and realize that this is a worth your time cd to listen to, and a must have for any rap fan collection..

Last note: YoYo was a bit 'less' gangster on this unlike her previous releases. It still have the west coast favor to it though.

5 out of 5 stars TOTAL CONTROL !!!!!!!!!.......2002-05-17

This album was and still is very underrated. Besides her breaktrough single"YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YOYO" with a guest spot by Ice Cube and her appearance on the very popular single by the queen of dancehall, PATRA called " ROMANTIC CALL", here on the east coast ,this cd debuted quietly and then pasted. From what I here this set is bangin'.I have always enjoyed her rapping and stylish but striaght forward lyrics.Support Yo-Yo ,she and other female rappers. She has more good material to bring to the table. F.Y.I . I'm a 17 year old reviewer.

With R&B charts dominated by the flat voices of disaffected post-New Jack soul boyz, Hammond's hyper-romantic, old-school throw-down--juiced by reggae's exotic allure--makes him one of the few stalwarts who can stir the soul of any deep-down old-fashioned gal. Jamaica's top-ranking soul brother also happens to be one of the island's greatest singer/songwriters, and this album, his sole recording for a stateside major label (Elektra), is a standout, even for this consistent and prolific vet. The scales may be tipped here towards R&B-infused love tunes, but lead track "Reggae Calling" makes an equally heart-swelling plea to the world to stop the violence, and truth-and-rights track "Motherland" receives its rightful share of Hammond's considerable store of passion. Of course, he would rather make love than war, and those urgent, whiskey-grained vocals throb most exquisitely when Hammond sings to the ladies in "We've Found It," a tale of young love in bloom, and in "No Disturb Sign," one of the best booty-knocking soundtracks ever recorded this side of Barry White. "I Won't Surrender" takes a stand against a faithless love, but Hammond is most familiar and convincing as the love junkie of "Can't Get Enough," a mix of moaning cries and startling poetic juxtapositions--the Bible, Oil of Olay, breakfast cereal. "I Could Beat Myself" revisits another favorite Hammond persona, the errant lover full of regrets, but nothing approaches his voice slipping midnote, like satin over silk, from a low, sultry croon to an angel's sweet swoon in "It's Not Too Late," his superheated duet with the reggae man's favorite partner, Marcia Griffiths. --Elena Oumano
