Customer Reviews:
Charleston on the Thames.......2007-03-24
This Flapper title reminds us that they "Black Bottomed" and "Charlestoned" in merrie olde England too, back in the '20s. Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence stirred up plenty of musical magic on their side of the pond, where the gin was legal.
There are plenty of American selections on this CD as well, including some wonderful numbers by Waring's Pennsylvanians ("Ice Cream") and Paul Whiteman's Orchestra ("Nobody's Sweetheart"), and a terrific rendition of "Broadway Melody" with Charles King doing the vocal and the legendary Roy Shields conducting the orchestra. This compensates for Annette Hanshaw's dull rendition of "Button Up Your Overcoat" (leave Helen Kane's stuff to Helen Kane!) and the poorly arranged rendition of "Charleston" that opens this collection.
Overall, this is an interesting collection of well-known and lesser-known recordings of '20s standards, with enough good content to offset the mediocre.
Takes You Back in Time.......2007-02-25
One thing I really like about this collection is that it that while it contains a number of "standard" selections from the 20's that have been done many times by many artists, it also contains a lot of selections that you just don't hear that often. In fact some of them are probably next to impossible to find any other place. Considering that most of these recordings were made more than half a century ago, the quality is outstanding. Sometimes old recordings are full of hiss and static and scratchy sounding, but these have been restored to near perfect condition. For old recordings, these are as good as it gets with almost no background noise. The only thing that gives away the age of these records is that some selections do tend to sound slightly flat, probably because they were taken from original monophonic sources and possibly in part due to the noise reduction process. It doesn't detract in the least from the recordings. Of course you can find some more modern groups that have re-recorded some of these songs in full, rich stereo, but they really don't sound that much better and sometimes not as good. The original artists often did the best renditions. If you really want to hear what the 20's sounded like musically, this is the album for you. You won't find a better 20's collection.
Do, Do, Do Buy this CD.......2007-02-10
A great collection of songs. It starts off strong and keeps going. There are a few weak ones but don't let that hold you back just skip over them. Grab the flask, put on your raccoon coat and have some fun.
Late '20s dance music.......2007-01-15
The very first selection on THE ROARING 'TWENTIES is one of the earliest electrical recordings in existence. "Charleston," by the Savoy Orpheans, recorded in 1925, is an ideal way to begin this musical journey back to the carefree days of that unique decade. What follows is a solid set of tunes, many of which got plenty of exposure on early radio.
Two pages of liner notes are included, as well as such details as recording dates and running times. Top rating for album content, source condition and reproduction quality. THE ROARING 'TWENTIES is a terrific collection of late 1920s popular music.

Excellent compilation and restoration.......2004-07-10
I have been searching for the recording of Charles King singing, "Broadway melody" for years. Here it is - in an excellent restoration - with just the slightest (and soon unnoticed) hint of surface hiss. What a great performance. Gene Kelly imitated King's phrasing and style when he did the same number in "Singing in the rain." King introduced the song in, "Broadway Melody of 1929." He was a talented Broadway singer who hoped to follow Al Jolson's success in Hollywood. He was memorable in the movie but soon returned to Broadway, found plenty of work, and was eventually forgotten.
There are lots of great numbers here. Hooray to Pearl for bringing this one out.

Music from Humphrey Bogar Movies.......2007-06-27
I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.
Simply the original.......2007-06-19
As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.
not the stuff dreams are made of.......2007-01-03
most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

Genuine "unplugged" recordings.......2007-01-13
THE ROARING TWENTIES * HITS OF '20 (When My Baby Smiles At Me) features eighteen top ten sellers from that year, so this is really a "BEST OF" 1920 collection. Two previously unreleased bonus tracks are also included. All 24 recordings in this set were made by the acoustic horn method, thus they have somewhat limited frequency range. Despite this potential handicap, the uniqueness and superiority of the performances on HITS OF '20 are most apparent.
Highlights include:
Al Jolson's original waxing of George Gershwin's "Swanee." Jolie also has two other songs on this album.
The Paul Whiteman orchestra's first big hit, "Dardanella," was a glimpse of great things to come. Whiteman, along with Mr. Gershwin, introduced "Rhapsody In Blue" to the world in 1924. The Whiteman band also does "The Japanese Sandman" here.
"The Love Nest" will sound familiar to any fan of George Burns & Gracie Allen-- this was their theme song on both radio and TV.
Iron-lunged tenor Billy Murray, the first superstar of the recording industry, is featured on three tracks. Murray's powerful voice was famous for rising above the most blaring of backups or loudest of sopranos, and his services were sought by numerous labels during his 40-plus year career.
Eddie Cantor, the comic sensation of the 1919 Ziegfeld Follies, reprises "You'd Be Surprised," the Irving Berlin tune he performed to great acclaim in that extravaganza.
Berlin has two other novelties here: "I'll See You In Cuba," and "Wait Till You Get Them Up In The Air, Boys."
One of the bonus tracks, "I Love The Land Of Old Black Joe," is by the first "radio girl," Vaughn DeLeath. DeLeath is credited with inventing the vocal style known as "crooning." An Edison label artist, her soothing voice was featured widely in early radio. The legend is that unlike other female vocalists, DeLeath's laid back style assured that the massive (but delicate) amplifying tubes used back then wouldn't blow out from any shrill high notes.
Ernest Hare, half of the comedy team of Jones & Hare (The Happiness Boys), is here, as are the Original Indiana Five.
Filtering is apparent, but not oppressive. Brief liner notes, as well as record data, are provided. For anyone interested in historic recordings of genuine significance, THE ROARING TWENTIES * HITS OF '20 is certain to please.

I enjoyed this music because it took me on a time travel journey to a time I had never experienced, but could enjoy vicariously.Great background music for a party.
Good but too much Billy Murray.......2005-04-07
Comic singer Billy Murray is over-represented on this album. The real treasure is "Mean, Mean, Mamma" by the Original Indiana Five. It's a terrific Hot Jazz song - so good that I've bought vol 1 of the Indiana Five album from Amazon. It's great!!

I'm "Personally" "Mad" About This Album!.......2003-04-15
I received this Cd as a Christmas present, and it honestly has been played just about everyday. Here we have two totally different albums combined and it provides us with two different sides of Short. Of the two my favorite is "The Mad 20's". I guess if for any reason it's because I'm more familiar with those songs, that's the kind of music I like. But, "My Person Property" did introduce me to Cy Coleman, now, one of my favorite composers. I only knew Coleman through Sinatra songs like "The Best Is Yet To Come" & "Witchcraft". But almost every song on that album is enjoyable. I absolutely love " You Fascinate Me So". I never heard a song so sophisticated. How on Earth Carolyn Leigh managed to come up with such rhymes is beyond me. It's one of Coleman's best. Standard songs off the Coleman albums are; "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Wicthcraft","Hey Look Me Over",& "Rules of the Road". But the umfamiliar songs as I said are wonderful too. "I've Got Your Number" has a very good arrangment behind it. "Its" is a swinging song. And the title track is charming as well. I do though prefer his arrangment on the album "Songs of New York" over the one heard of here.
"The Mad 20's" has Short with a sort of New Orleans style band. The albums starts off fast with Harry Warren's "Nagasaki", and never really lets up. Now, where Short was probably a bit more romantic on the other album, due to the song material, the Short heard on "The Mad 20's" is the kind of Short you'll hear when you see him in Cafe Caryle's. It's fun and energetic. Short sounds like he's having a good time. Some of my favorite tracks are "Changes", has a very 1920's sound to it. "Tiger Rag", "Sweet So and So", I can only imagine one of the few songs Ira Gershwin wrote without George, when he was alive & "Heebie Jeebies" and there's even room for a quick Louis Armstrong impersonation. All Bobby Short fans should enjoy the album. Those not too familiar with Short might only like "My Personal Property". Here we have two of Short's best early albums, and I'm glad his recordings are now starting to de reissued on Cd.
Bottom-line: Two of Bobby Short's best albums. A must have for fans. And a good choice of those just starting to discover Short.

This is another outstanding release from ASV/Living Era. Some of the greatest songs of the 1920s are featured on this disc, featuring such greats as Selvin's Novelty Orchestra, Al Jolson (of "The Jazz Singer" fame), Billy Jones, Vernon Dalhart, Gene Austin, Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, and Eddie Cantor (one of the original choices for the leading role in "The Jazz Singer"). This CD is a truly definitive collection representing the music of the flapper era.

Another Winner from the Tentet.......2004-01-03
Don't let the title mislead you. This is definitely not music of the 1920's as you imagine it to be. Indeed, the tunes selected and arranged by Rob McConnell for his latest Tentet CD all have strong and enduring melodies. In addition, they are given the full-out, straight-ahead jazz treatment by McConnell, who has been, without question, one of jazz's most interesting and inventive arrangers over the past 30 years. One of the keys to McConnell's success is that he never fails to make his arrangements swing, and he always keeps his musicians and listeners alert with tricky tempo changes (check out "Lover Come Back to Me" and "Always") and unexpcted harmonies ("How Long Has This Been Going On", for example). Rick Wilkins, another of Canada's top arrangers contributes one excellent arrangement ("Remember") to this CD and acts as co-producer.
The Tentet excels because of the superb tune choices and arrangements, but also because of superb musicianship. These guys are right at the top of Canada's jazz and musical community. Special mention must go to bassist Steve Wallace and drummer Terry Clarke. There is not a tighter and more swinging bass-drums duo anywhere on this planet. If you've heard the previous CD's by the Tentet then you know that the solo team is exceptional - saxophonists P.J. Perry, Alex Dean and Mike Murley, trumpeters Guido Basso and Steve McDade, trombonists McConnell and Terry Promane, and pianist Dave Restivo, who especially shines on this CD. All the soloists are featured on the opening "Thou Swell" and each has a feature or two on the other tunes. Murley and Dean are an outstanding tenor team, and the lead trumpet of Steve McDade is expecially strong throughout. There is no point listing highlights, because every tune and arrangement is outstanding.
The Tentet's earlier CD's are both highly recommended, but if anything "Music of the Twenties" features even tighter ensemble playing and warmer, clearer, recorded sound. Even at this level, things can keep getting better all the time!
This is a superb 72 minute CD, and enthusiastically recommended.

Delightful and Refreshing.......2007-04-13
Before I discovered this album, I had never heard of Annette Hanshaw and I am 59 years old. Probably anyone under 70 or 80 wouldn't remember her that well or maybe not at all. She is just a pure joy to listen to and has such a relaxed, pleasant sounding voice. Her voice is not powerful, but strong enough to deliver all the songs well. It's also not the babyish sound that you get from someone like Helen Kane. The sound quality was somewhat flat and slightly muffled, but when you consider the age of these recordings and the fact that they were undoubtedly originally recorded in monophonic, the quality is remarkable. A couple of the songs had more noise than others, but mostly they have been well restored and one couldn't expect much better. Just be aware you aren't going to get sharp, clear sound that you would from more modern recordings. This is a real collector's item of great 20's music. The habit she has of saying "That's All!" at the end of a number of songs was delightful to me, even after I heard it a number of times, but some might find it annoying after a few times.
Can't Help Loving Annette Hanshaw!.......2005-10-30
I really love this CD. It has a great number of her 1927 recordings which display that Annette could get a true jazz feeling going in her singing. She wasn't just a sweet little singer at all. She was up for jazz which is evident on "Don't Take That Black Bottom Away" and the uptempo "Ain't That A Grand and Glorious Feeling" and "Who-oo?, You-oo, That's Who!" She was also good at torch songs such as "The Song Is Ended". Annette Hanshaw was an integral part of the 20s and 30s roster of female vocalists.
She was friends with the great Helen Kane and Annette was good at impersonating Helen's style of singing. While these songs are fun, it is best to let Helen Kane sing like Helen and it is a joy to hear Annette sing in her own inimitable style. This is a CD I treasure and I highly recommend it. Annette recorded from 1926-1934. It was too short of a career but she left many grand and glorious recordings!
I guess everyone has an opinion..........2004-09-25
I discovered Annette Hanshaw about 3 years ago, and instantaneously fell in love with her vocals. Annette was a consummate perfectionist and a very shy person, and these attributes of her personality beam through her music. She has a voice that is slightly timid, but tremendously complex and intriguing. She also nails her stylistic interpretation of each song while still allowing her musicians to stand out. No, her voice can't break glass, and the sound quality of the songs may not be astounding (most were recorded almost 80 years ago), but this is still a worthwhile album. Annette broke a lot of ground as a singer, and introduced the public at large to an "acceptable" form of Jazz, paving the way for those who would go after her. Standouts on this album are "The Song Is Ended" and "Here or There." Both are very strong. "Who-Oo? You-Oo, That's Who!" is a fun song that is reflective of the flapper style. "Under The Moon" is a ballad, one of my favorites from Annette, as she flaunts her vocal range...well over three octaves in the song. This album isn't for everyone, but for people who can appreciate older music and different vocal styles, this is a gem of a record. The Sensation Records (Vol 5, 6, 7) are also quite good.
I must be listening to someone else.......2004-06-24
I bought this CD after these spectacular reviews. And wow, am I disappointed. I should have looked a little more carefully at the track listings, the rave review listing wonderful performances is referring to songs on some other CD, cuz they sure aren't on this one. The opening cut is solid, but it descends from there into a squeaky, tiring vocal without punch or conviction. She is an adequate vocalist, but compared to some of the potent voices that were becoming stars at the same time, these recordings just don't cut it. Her voice misses the notes she wants to hit on a regular basis. "I'm Somebody's Somebody Now" is downright ugly, and how about "Who-oo? You-oo, that's who!"? She sounds positively straining. She can't hit the high notes.
And the concluding "That's all!" her special trademark? Woop-de-doo. It sounds rather obligatory after the fifth or sixth time.
These are early recordings; possibly she got better in the 30s. But if not, I can see why she retired from singing, she must have realized she wasn't that good.
A 1920s Icon.......2001-07-28
Not many people remember Annette Hanshaw. I think maybe 1% of people my age (27) even would know what she did. However, Ms. Hanshaw was one of the first "true" female pop singer. Ruth Etting may be remembered more now, and maybe justly so. However, Hanshaw did it better and had a better range in a very short amount of time she was performing. I have a rare radio interview Hanshaw gave in the late 1970s, and she never fully understood why people liked her singing. She even claimed that she did not have any of her old records. (Annette Hanshaw died in 1985 at the age of 75).
This CD, puts together some of Annette's first recordings in 1925 such as "Black Bottom". The clarity of the disc is amazing when you realize that the recordings are 75 years old. Despite the crude recording techniques of the early 1920s, her voice comes out clear and powerful. You can only imagine what her career would of been like if better recording equipment would of been around then. Other highpoints of the disc include her version of Irving Berlin's "The Song Is Ended" and a personal favorite "Get Out And Get Under The Moon".
I just wish more people my age would explore this great music such as Annette Hanshaw. It is a treasure trove of gems, and like this CD, it is music that does not deserve to be forgotten...

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation .......2005-09-26
Terrific set- good overview and arrangement of the great music of the 20's...
Good intro to the era called the Roaring Twenties.......2002-12-30
The selections and remastering are good. Most of the selections are from the electric recording era, (after 1925) which means some better sound quality. My only question is why not a two CD set with 20 selections per disc, instead of four discs with 10 selections each?
The Roaring Twenties (Box Set).......1999-11-30
We purchased this set to play in our antique store, and it has been getting rave reviews from employees and customers. We recommend this to anyone with an interest in the early twentieth century lifestyle and music, it is a wonderful compendium of songs and performers. Well worth the money.
