Trumpeter Erik Truffaz draws his lyrical lineage from Miles Davis. He merges the ethereal textures of Davis's Ascenseur pour L'Echafaud and In a Silent Way with world music and modern dance rhythms. Backed by guitarist Manu Codjia, bassist Michel Benita, and drummer Philippe Garcia, Truffaz's vibrato-less, open horn melds with drum & bass and hip-hop beats on "Saisir" and the title track. "No Fear" and "Tahun Bahu" swing with a more mainstream jazz feel. But "Nina Valeria," a duet piece with oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, and "Magrouni," an anthemic ditty featuring vocalist Mounir Troudi, both have Arabic tinges. Truffaz and company create a compelling sound collage that dances and trances. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars No similarity to Nils Petter Molvaer.......2006-02-21

I really do not understand how one can make any analogy to Nu-Jazz, DrumNBass, HipHop or Nils Petter Molvaer, because there is none. Indeed, Eric Truffaz is much more experimental and innovative than only mixing Jazz with Electronica, and his style is much more complex than Nils Petter Molvaer. If you compare it to anything, then to Fusion. But do not make the mistake to think of Miles Davis. This comparison is just so cliche, and most of the times is even highly unjustified. Truffaz has his own style, and I find it to be less lyrical.

I like "Mantis" very much, and I can't make any comparison to another Jazz artist. This is maybe the best compliment you can make, because in recent years, younger Jazz artists tended to be very uninnovative (see Nils Petter Molvaer). In contrast, Truffaz creates a new sound, maybe some kind of New-Style-Fusion. The biggest strength is experimentation with rhythm, which are at times really complex, much more complex than anyhing the Norwegian "Jazz"-musicians have ever created.

The sound is consistently dark, at times it makes you even feel a little uncomfortable. Certainly it does not help to light up your mood. I think it is a good sign if an album can create a special athmosphere.

Well, it is 2006 now, and if you look who is invited to the biggest Jazz festivals (Montreal, Montreux,...) you won't find Bugge Wesseltoft or Nils Petter Molvaer, but you find Eric Truffaz. This clearly shows who of those musicians have created something new, something you will still listen to in 10 years.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz and Electronica united.......2003-02-01

Truffaz is a French trumpeter that explores the conjunction between Miles Davis jazz sounds with current Electronica-Dance tunes like Drum'n'Bass. This album also has a little of what we could see in "The Mask" (Hip Hop orientes) and the remarkable CD "Revisited" with remixes of previous tracks. Nevertheless, there is a new powerful and experimental sonic exploration here. Recommendable for those who love jazz and the sounds of Dance music.

5 out of 5 stars squirreldive is tripping............2002-06-22

To describe this album as "cliched" is the most backwards review I've ever heard. Not to dismiss squirreldive's review or anything, because do I see the similarity to Nils Petter Molvaer's ECM recordings, but this is very unique music. Tracks like "Magrouni" are so unique, yet at the same time work perfectly. There is also a mind-blowing dynamic range in the songs. Lyrical duets, like the ethereal "Nina Valeria," are juxtaposed next to experimental "beat-boxing" tracks, like "Parlophone." Phillipe Garcia's drum n bass inspired drumming cut deep grooves into songs like "The Point." Truffaz follows the pioneer of fusion trumpet, Miles Davis by using a wah pedal on the bonus track, a reprise of "Magrouni," to create a marvelous energetic effect. The album is solid from start to finish, but don't take my word for it; listen to the samples.

2 out of 5 stars "man, tis is disappointing".......2002-06-06

I loved Mr. Truffaz's album "the mask" and its super-hyper jazz. But his follow up is quite the opposite. "Mantis" for one incorporates a terrible cliched electric guitar. It sounds familiar to the style in which Nils Petter Molvaer uses it on his record "Tlon", which i recommend over this mess of songs. It seems that Truffaz has lost his edge and direction, which he tries to cover up by throwing random genres of music into boring, beaten-down tracks and surrounding those songs with even more lifeless music. Truffaz is great, just in a rut(i hope?).

5 out of 5 stars absolutely worth owning.......2003-02-15

I have many classical guitar albums, including several by John Williams in solo, duet and concerti, and this is one of my favorites. The playing is virtuosic as is expected from Williams, but the repertoire is varied and includes litte known works, including a Shostakovich duet written for guitar! Some reviewers haven't cared for the "mediocre" compositions from Australia, Ireland and the Americas, but I have to strongly disagree. Brouwer can at times be difficult, but he's hardly a slouch. Besides, if these compositions were worthy to draw the attention of one of the greatest guitarists of all time (and a fine composer in his own right), I think they're worthy of ours!
Buy this album, listen to it a few times for familiarization, and enjoy it for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Impeccable playing.......2002-08-16

Williams and Kain display their considerable talents in playing with fire and reserve, virtuosity and taste and are generally close to perfect. The De Falla,Granados,Takemitsu,Hand,Soler and Shostakovich works are the standouts. The disappointing part of the album comes with the Westlake,Houghton,Brouwer and Verdery pieces. The greatest playing in the world can't disguise mediocre compositions. This is an overall good album but it does require skipping around a lot of superfluous stuff.
Get this one if you happen across a used copy.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection of pieces.......2002-04-01

I have had this CD for several years, and still enjoy it as much as when it was first given to me. It is being passed around the family, as my son owned a copy, then bought me one, and I have just ordered a copy for my daughter-in-law.

Some of the pieces are familiar, but if you persevere, I am sure you will come to enjoy the works that are new to you.

I was sorry to see that one reviewer did not enjoy the Australian works. The Westlake piece [Songs from the Forest] is fairly light and very melodic. If you enjoy it, you should check out his Antarctica music, which exists in several different versions.

Kain's Guitar Trek recordings are also worth hunting for.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous world music, in the truest sense...........2002-01-03

John Williams and Timothy Kain, two masters of their chosen instrument, with more in common than just the country of their birth. Kain's guitar teacher at the conservatory in Australia had studied with Williams' father, Len. Williams and Kain first worked together in 1992, and enjoyed the experience. The two men form a complimentary duo in both technique and approach to music. Their playing is flawless. Their duets are seamless.

On this disk, Williams and Kain "journey outside the confines of the classical guitar repertoire." What a magnificent journey it is, too! The Mantis & The Moon contains 18 selections by 12 composers, grouped together by the cultures of the 6 lands they represent...Spain, Australia, Ireland, the Americas, Japan, and Russia.

This is beautiful music performed by two of the greatest guitarists of our generation. These performances go beyond classical, folk, pop or the usual guitar "genre" pieces. Yet the music is lovely, enjoyable, and accessible to the listener. If you love guitar music, you owe it to yourself to pick up this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Mantis and the Moon.......2001-12-13

Williams and Kain play very well as a duo. My favorite pieces on this CD are "Sonata in A," "Capitola," and "Jongo." "Sonata in A" is acoustical honey for the ears, as it epitomises Chopin's comment that nothing sounds sweeter than a guitar--except two guitars. "Jongo" is simply dazzling (but far from simple to perform). However, I don't like the Australian compositions (sorry about that critique of your Aussie mates, Mr. Williams). A few other selections are uninspiring as well. It may come as a surprise, but I prefer the Parkening and Brandon duo's performances of "La Vida Breve" and "Intermezzo" over Williams and Kain. Nonetheless, Williams and Kain put in some fine performances on this CD.

no, there's no music on this cd. but the guy's a poet, not a singer! i prefer this to most of the band stuff. then again, i'm a big fan. have been for nearly 20 years. "just visiting" and "loss of am. innocence" are my faves. for completists or carroll uber-fans? noooo! that distinction goes to "pools of mercury".that's how i feel, anyway.

3 out of 5 stars "This city is on my side...".......2004-04-05

First off, let's state for the record that this is a "spoken word" only CD, so those looking for music must look elsewhere.
Jim Carroll is one of my favorite poets, and so I concidered myself lucky to find this CD at my favorite used CD shop. Unlike Carrols other CD's, which are more spoken word and attempts at singing set to music backdrops. Here, Carroll is recorded live in various venues and recites everything from monologue to prose to poetry to amusing anecdotes; now, he's not the best monologuer in the world, but he has a unique cadence and imbues emotion into the sundries he presents.
"Tiny Tortures" is a monologue about an impromptu "performance act," and attacks pretentious artists and critics. Another longer monologue is "The Loss of American Innocence," in which a pre-teens first masturbation is paralleled to the death of John F. Kennedy (believe it or not). "Just Visiting" explores the last thoughts of a bank robber in vivid prose. As with most of the work on the CD, these piece explore sexuality, and how sexuality is an under-current in our everyday lives. Also, the CD is VERY sexually explicit, so be warned.
The stand-outs are still his poems, which reflect the influence of symbolists like Rimbaud. "For Elizabeth" is about a young girl who overdosed on heroine:
This place where I have put you now,
It is a cursed season, an awkward
line, a flawed circle. A snake of fire
devouring what, tomorrow, it will itself become.

"Praying Mantis" is a great compliment to "Fear of Dreaming," Carroll's selected poems. It's not the best spoken word CD ever made, but you gotta love a man who revises Nietzsche: "What does not kill me only serves to make me sleep until 3:30 the next afternoon."

1 out of 5 stars All talk, no music.......2003-11-27

This is a CD of a Jim Carroll nightclub performance where he spews out a little poetry and tells stories in his poetic style. They are mildly interesting stories, but most are not that deep.

On this CD, Carroll makes fun of performance art (even though that is what he is doing), talks a lot of about sexual issues (...) and explores the mind of a psychopathic bank robber (the only really deep bit).

Most of the time Carroll talks with emotion, but there are times he sounds like he is just reading his material. There are even times he stumbles over words, like he misread them.

There is probably nothing on this CD I would want to hear more than once. Carroll is a poet and sometimes rock musician. He had a wild, on the edge childhood. It is featured in the movie the Basketball Diaries.

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty good,.......2007-03-14

I ordered this CD awhile ago because I couldn't find many of the songs on it to download, and I particularly loved the song Anyway, which stopped in the the middle of the download. So, I just decided to order the CD. Over all, I like it. The song, Dynomite Satchel Of Pain doesn't catch my interest at all, however. But the rest, I like, with Lemonade and Anyway being my favorites. Wheatus has songs that are so original with catchy tunes you get stuck in your head for hours. None of their songs sound the same. I really like this CD.

            5 out of 5 stars Great work.......2000-10-05

Forever in Time (and not Forever in times) is one of the best melodic rock / hard rock /heavy metal albums i've ever heard. If you like great guitar solos (Dennis Stratton, ex-Iron Maiden & Tino Troy) and great melodic vocals (Tony O'Hora), it's the album. All the songs have something special. Forever in time (the track) is a song in memory of Chris' and Tino's Troy father and it has beautiful lyrics and a unforgetable chorus. If you like melodic rock, buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant !.......2000-07-09

If you love great melodic rock, you've got to have this. It's an absolute crime that this band isn't better known. This is powerful music, very melodic, with huge harmony vocals, great guitar work and absolutely brilliant lyrics. No weak songs at all. The title track rates as my favorite song of all times. Do yourself a favor and buy this album NOW. You won't regret it.
