It's gutsy for a young conductor and a second-tier orchestra to take on a program of showpieces, but Oue and the Minnesotans acquit themselves well, exhibiting flair and color in pieces that need them to make an effect. The big works are Liszt's Les Préludes and Ravel's Bolero. The Liszt gets a terrific reading--just listen to the warmth of the strings as they sing the melody about 3'40" in the delicacy of the wind phrases and the power of the grand climax. There's charm aplenty too, as in the lightly tripping Brahms Hungarian Dance. The lesser known works will please; Dinicu's "Hora" swirls vigorously and Klemperer's smiling "Merry Waltz" will happily surprise those who think him incorrigibly stolid. As usual for this label the sound is superior, with wide dynamics, sweet treble, burly bass, and oodles of detail and other audiophile virtues. An unalloyed delight! --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Recording.......2001-06-26
This is another topnotch Reference Recordings / MN Orchestra disc. All 15 minutes of Bolero is a perfect, gradual crescendo. And the brass in Liszt's Les Preludes will knock your socks off. I wish I could give this 10 stars!!!
Easy listening.......2000-08-04
The Minnesota Orchestra under its director Eije Oue has a marvelous set of musicians, but in my opinion they made too many records in the last years. Although none of the pieces on this record is really bad, with the exceptance of Otto Klemperer's Merry Waltz, the common denominator is popularity, the wellknown showpieces that lack the element of surprise. Liszt's Les Préludes is played adequately, but lacks the intensity of The Philadelphia Orchestra under Wolfgang Sawallisch (Water Lily Acoustics) and the Boléro by Ravel misses the jazz-influences Ravel intended.
The sound quality of this Reference Recording is outstanding, as usual.
Emotional!.......2000-07-28
I bought this CD as someone who knew Eiji Oue when he was in Boston, and I am thrilled with what he has done with the Minnesota Orchestra. The sound quality on this recording is great, and Eiji and his orchestra give an energetic and emotional performance. Having been a student at Interlochen Arts Camp for several years (and those of you who have been there know what I am talking about), I still cannot listen to "Les Preludes" without bursting into tears. The CD is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection, whether you are a fan of classical music or not.

Eiji Oue has been getting great press since he became music director of the Minnesota Orchestra. This brand new recording of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde gives us an idea why. The crystal-clear audiophile recording allows us to hear all of Mahler's colors--just listen, in the first song, as the mood ranges from exhilaration over the joys of life and the perfect blue sky to the howling ape. One of the great things about this set is Oue's willingness to let the orchestra loose, here and elsewhere. Jon Villars sounds as if he's at the start of a fine tenorial career--the voice is big and bright, with almost no sense of strain, even at Mahler's cruel climaxes. But the true find here is mezzo Michelle DeYoung, who sings with a warmth and communication reminiscent of Christa Ludwig (although their actual sounds could not be more different). Her "Abschied" ends hypnotically, as it should, but without exaggeration. This is a wonderful set, performed with intelligence and feeling, and it should rise to the top of any list of superb Das Lieds on the market. --Robert Levine

Goodish performance with crystalline sonics.......2005-09-18
Oue is hardly a masterful Mahler conductor, but he does his best here, and Michelle DeYoung, caught rather early in her rising career, has a lovely voice if not a tremendous insight into Mahler's world. Overall, the reason to buy this disc is the audiophile-qaulity sound from Reference. They camped out in Minnesota for a while and made spectacular recordings under the rathre lackluster Oue before he quickly departed.
A fantastic recording of a brilliant piece.......2001-03-11
What an amazing recording..it's difficult to ask for much more than this. The recording quality is crystal clear, allowing the listener to hear the fantastic colors in this piece. Just as important, the orchestra and the soloist do a brilliant job, particularly Michelle DeYoung. I saw them perform this live 2 days before they recorded it as well (one of the best performances I've ever seen!) - this recording reminds me of that spectacular evening of music. The performers capture the brilliance of Mahler, and clearly show that his music was a bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Although I realize that this is putting the cart before the horse, I must begin by praising the sonic quality of this recording. It is so clear, open and detailed that I felt as though the music was being revealed to me for the first time. Especially in "der Abschied," the interweaving of instruments and voices seems absolutely transparent. Beyond this, far beyond, is the magnificent playing of the Minnesota Orchestra and the heartfelt singing of the vocal soloists. Overall, this is my favorite recording of "Das Lied," and I now own four.
Stunning!.......2000-10-22
I heard the Minnesota Orchestra play this live back on Valentines Day in 1999 and it was one of the best performances I have ever heard. Truly fulfilling musically and spiritually. The playing and singing on this disc recaptures that magic perfectly. The recorded sound in unparalled, the singing strong and inspired from both soloists, and the orchestra in top form. The Minnesota Orchestra is regarded as the best orchestra in the U.S. right now in some circles. Don't believe me? Give some of their other CD's a listen and you will hear ample evidence.

A Reference for Sax Players and Fans.......2003-01-01
I've known Mark for several years, first being his student, then as he became my friend and mentor
Once Mark told me that he had recorded a CD live at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, I KNEW that it was going to be great. This CD is even better than I expected. It features tremendous musicians (Mark, Maggio, Bob Rummage on drums and Eric Hochberg on bass, with a guest appearance by Parton) who have played with each other A LOT. The tightness shows through extended sections of drum/tenor interplay, bass/tenor interplay, an evocative tenor/piano duo (Bar Room Ballad) and more!
The tunes show a wide range. Mark composed three of the tunes, while the covers include the more familiar choices of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, My One and Only Love and Beautiful Love, among others
The musicians put themdelves into each piece - weaving in and out of the chords, handling tempos up to burnin' (Softly), playing the tunes subtlely, but as a team. Maggio's comping is unique in the choice of chords and rhythms, but consistently spurs the soloists, always respecting them through his listening to their solos. Maggio solos well, as does Parton on his cuts.
Mark shows his mastery of the tenor. He has a great, unique sound that grown through years of study, reflection and listening. Of course, you can hear a whisper of Stan Getz here, a hint of Joe Henderson there, and others, but he's put them together into a rich, unique, mature, yet evolving instrumental voice. His technique and sense of time are unusually good, at whatever tempo is being played. Especially notable is his command of dynamic range from nearly inaudible to truly powerful. The result is tremendously moving playing, always appropriate, always his own.
All the cuts are enjoyable. My favorites are My One And Only Love, a haunting ballad, one of the best recorded versions of this tune, Softly, a subtle, outside, furious-tempoed version of this song, with great work by Bob Rummage on drums in supporting Mark and Riley's Thang a medium-tempo blues with a succession of great solos.
I've enjoyed reading about the success of this CD and it showing up on various radio playlists. It's about time that Mark's talent became known among the record-buying public.
I listen to a lot of CDs. This is the best one I've gotten this year. If you like post-bop and modern tenor sax, you'll LOVE this. It is in print and readily available.
Mark Colby is AWESOME!!!.......2002-06-17
all I have to say is WOW!!! Mark Colby plays the heck out of that tenor sax. He is the technical master of the saxophone. Not only is he great on the cd, rob parton is an excellent trumpet player that you can easily groove to. Vince Maggio is is very rhythimic and always is responding to Mark's playing. Eric Hochberg Is a very interesting bass player to listen to. He's a ryhthym machine!! As Charlie Dresser said, Bob Rummage fits Mr. Colby like a glove. They both feed off each other's excellent playin abilities. Buy this one, and never take it out of your CD player!!!
Colby Hits a Classic Here.......2002-02-23
My goodness....Mr. Mark Colby is one of the most accomplished, mature and modest musicians on the scene today.
accomplished as to say his work with Jaco Pastorius, Maynard Ferguson, and Bob James is all legendary. Mature as in tone, because he has - hands down, no doubt - the BEST tone on the market. so rich, so full and so flawless. mr. colby's tenor sound is one that i could never get tired of listening too. modest because he lets his incredible band, consisting of the wonderful piano works of the musical genius, Vince Maggio, the incredibly versatile bass works of Eric Hochberg, and the masterful drumming of one of my personal favorites, mr. bob rummage, mark lets them do what they do, and believe me, they do it WELL! this is a great, groving album that you'll never want to put on a shelf, it'll always be fresh, it's just that kind of cd. and by the way, rob partons guest trumpeting is also phenomanal in case you were wondering. get this cd, believe me, you'll love it.
