Customer Reviews:
Two old favourites on one Cd.......2004-02-03
ROBERTA - While not Jerome Kern's finest score (SHOW BOAT wins that title hands down), ROBERTA does contain many of his trademark lovely melodies and at least two standards: SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES and YESTERDAYS. There are many more gems too including "Lovely To Look At" (written for the 1935 film version); "You're Devastating" and "The Touch of Your Hand."
The show has a weak book whiich has made it unrevivable but the songs have survived.
Decca's album dating from 1944 was the first complete recording of the score and sounds very much like a cast album from a 1940s revival. Alfred Drake and Kitty Carlisle are the leads with Paula Laurence there to handle the comedy numbers. Sound is quite good for such an old recording, and the CD booklet features a reproduction of the cover from the old 78 set.
THE VAGABOND KING - Rudolf Friml's 1925 operetta is not his finest (ROSE MARIE is) but it too conatins a good share of strong melodies: "Only a Rose"; "Love Me Tonight" and especially "Song of the Vagabonds."
Decca's 1951 recording covers these (and three others, plus and Overture and Finale) in a robust recording lead by Alfred Drake. Sound is high Fidelity mono (since by the time this album was made Tape had replaced acetate discs)and the reissue is welcome since there is no other version of VAGBOND KING available on Cd!
A classic score back on CD!.......2003-01-20
Musical theatre fans should be greatful to Decca Broadway for bringing the classic Jerome Kern/Otto Harbach score back on CD, now that the Columbia studio recording is out of print. Alfred Drake (fresh from his success from the landmark "Oklahoma!"), Paula Laurence, and Kitty Carlisle are in excellent voice and the score contains two classics "Smoke Get In Your Eyes" and "Lovely to Look At", originally for the 1935 film version. You'll also appreciate the witty lyrics of "Don't Ask Me Not to Sing", "Let's Begin", "Yesterdays", and "Alphi Beta Phi", which is not listed on the track list, but is at the end of the overture. Oh, did I mention the eight tracks of "The Vagabond King" with Drake and Metropolitan Opera great Mimi Benzell? A must-have for Broadway and operetta fans!

GREAT collection from a less recognized band.......2006-12-13
I don't like lengthy reviews so straight to the meat. These guys were (are?) good - why weren't they more popular??
If you like Kansas, Thin Lizzy, Starz, Triumph, and the like, then give this a listen. Stand out cuts are Tonight, Flesh and Blood, Hollywood, and Touch Me Tonight. Heck, the Christmas Song is even pretty catchy!
Check it out! Especially if you're looking for some misic that isn't made anymore. This will take you back to the good old days....

Customer Reviews:
A decent overview, but I'd have done it differently........2000-07-27
My biggest gripe with this greatest hits package is that the person who picked the songs did not seem to be familiar with the band's better material over their five album lifespan. This happens a lot with greatest hits packages. Most of the songs are no-brainers. Last Chance is one of the greatest FM rock songs ever and Tonight, Breakout, Straight Ahead and Flesh and Blood are all what I would consider hugely underrated. My problem is with the inclusion of You've Got What I Need and Train Rolls On. Both are decent songs, but I'd have included Are You Ready, Do You Feel Alright or Summer Sun (which probably would have made it had it not been on something other than the band's original label.) The previously unreleased songs are always nice to find on compilations such as these and Christmas Together fits the bill here. Not a song that fits your mood year round, but after hearing Do They Know It's Christmas ad nauseum every holiday season, Christmas Together is at least something fresh. As for the other previously unreleased song, I read somewhere that Touch Me Tonight is the bands highest charting song ever. This speaks volumes about the lack of respect Shooting Star got in what should have been their heyday. Again, a decent song, but nothing special. If you are an old fan of the band like I am, you may be better served by buying the five cd's and making your own compilation, but if you're new to Shooting Star, this would be a good place to start.
Most Underrated Band of the 80's.......2000-04-22
This is a collection of great songs from the most underrated rock band of the 80's. Ths disc opens with the epic, and FM radio classic, "Last Chance." The violins add to the "symphonic rock" quality of this band. Next follow two poppier numbers from their first disc. Good songs, but there is better to follow.
"Tonight", the last inclusion from the first album, is song about destiny. It starts off slow and gentle. The song soon becomes agressive and heavy - another classic.
Next follow some of the better songs from Shooting Star's second album. "Flesh and Blood" was a top 40 hit which captures emotions about the uncertainty of our lives, our loves, and the meaning of it all.
"Hollywood" is a song contrasting the small town life with life in the fast lane - another great one.
The next two songs, "Breakout" and "Hang on For Your Life," are the two heavy rock offerings reminiscent of bands like Bad Company or Grand Funk Railroad in their heyday.
The band, seems to have a knack for capturing raw emotion and the pleasure of the power chord. For all of the "radio-friendly" bands that have come and gone, Boston, Styx, Journey, Bad Company et al,the criticism about the lack of an edge and the predictibilty of their music holds. As for Shooting Star, although they fit in to the same genre, there was a raw emotion, an unpredictability, an agressive edge, that put this band head and shoulders above their more celebrated brethren.
Same as always!.......1999-12-30
If you are still stuck in the 80's time warp, Shooting Star is for you. They are not the most creative band, but they have there stong point covered. The songs mix and match well on the CD. It plays well without jumping over track's The new songs have the same feel as the old. If you have ever heard them live, you will remember the feel they recreate in the studio. If you have never listened to them, but still enjoy bands like Journey, Night Ranger, REO, Damn Yankee's ETC. Here is another band for you to follow! Enjoy!
Good Music, Bad quality.......1999-08-25
The music of Shooting Star is not very complex. Straight forward rock with a touch of balladeering. The songs still hold up and "Last Chance" is still a rock legend. The disappointment lies not with the music but with the sound quality of the CD. The sounds frequently pop and cut out and its overall sound is hollow. Although I love the convenience and durability of the CD, I will stick with my vinyl.
Not the Best Of I'd have made.......1999-07-22
Having collected all of the albums on record and cassette, I had high hopes for this release when I got it a few years back. And many of the great rocking songs I like the band for are there. The only difficulty is that they are interspersed with slower songs that I'm not particularly fond of. You get "Last Chance" and "Bring It On" followed by "You've Got What I Need", "Tonight" wakes you up again. But then are "Flesh And Blood" and the lamentable lament "Hollywood" to send you back towards dreamland. The rest of the album and the 2 new tracks at the end are similarly hit-and-miss. I greatly like their rock-band side, and wish that they hadn't followed the rock-and-roll edict that states that every band has to play ballads to show their diversity. I use the "Next Track" button on the CD player a lot with this album. Now that their first 5 are available on CD, I expect I will mix my own Best-of, leaving this one behind.

thought this would be great.......2007-03-17
Beautiful music, beautiful voice-but unfortunately mismatched, and poorly recorded- "opera" style of delivery detracts from enjoyment- and recording poor quality in that it alternately blares out and drops to inaudible- second CD really poor- looks like one thrown in for good measure.
I am not musically trained nor a critic but I have loved these songs for many years and this was a disappointment.

The Depths of Artistry.......2006-12-18
It is hard to imagine anything more precious and cloying than this collection of popular songs sung by a person whose interpretations so infect her vocal techniques as to come out totally laughable. One could use this as a party record except that after a few songs one has to stop listening out of boredom and anger....
