Editorial Reviews
Patricia Myers - JazzTimes
East-Coast vocalist Diane Hubka possesses an unadorned singing style that is perfect for ballads such as "Lazy Afternoon" and "Alone Together." But when it's time to accelerate the tempo, she's totally able and adept. An excellent improviser, she capably handles the angularly complex lines of "Israel", enriched by the searing alto sax of Lee Konitz, who also guests on Jobim's "Favela" and "Detour Ahead." The core quartet of pianist Frank Kimbrough, guitarist John Hart, bassist Harvie Schwartz and drummer Ron Vincent are superb throughout, particularly on Kenny Rankin's title track.
Scott Yanow - Cadence
Diane Hubka has a friendly and warm voice, she sings in tune, it is easy to understand the words she interprets and she swings easily without improvising very much. One quality that distinguishes Hubka from the hundreds of other similar Jazz singers is her impeccable taste in picking out songs. There is not an excess of Jazz versions of Marilyn Harris' "Don't Your Know Me", Kenny Rankin's "Haven't We Met?", Meredith d'Ambrosio's ironic "Miss Harper Goes Bizarre" and Al Rinker's "Everybody Want's To Be A Cat" (from the cartoon The Aristocats). Maybe there should be. Hubka is joined by a very tasteful rhythm section (pianist Frank Kimbrough and guitarist John Hart get their share of solo space) and on three songs the great altoist Lee Konitz. One of Konitz's three appearances is on "It's Your Dance", a vocalized version of John Carisi's "Israel", a song that the altoist had soloed on 49 years earlier with Miles Davis' Nonet. Other highlights include a sensual "Detour Ahead", a swinging arrangement of "My Kind Of Love" inspired by the version on a Beverly Kenney record and "Thinking Of You", which has the oddest notes in its melody. Actually all dozen selections are quite worthy, making this an impressive introduction to the winning voice of Diane Hubka.

This is a beautiful blend of old and new work.......2003-05-24
on one cd. The DVD is a "must have". Impossibly, better and better with each play. Kenny's renditions of the old classics surpass the originals. He owns 'em. Romantic. Vocals as slippery as silk sheets.
Wonderful.......2002-02-03
I am a devoted Kenny Rankin fan. I have to respond to the review that claimed that this disc is a rehash of old material. I say, 'So What?' Kenny Rankin has always proved himself to be a magnificent vocalist and innovative stylist. This new disc only proves that point. 'Haven't We Met' shows Kenny at his best, with a live audience with only his guitar as accompaniment. Any rehash is a great rehash and better than no hash. I recommend this album to everyone. I recommend any and all his albums to everyone. I recommend all and any of his live performances to everyone.
The JazzChannel presents Kenny Rankin.........2002-01-11
I had the pleasure to view several of Kenny Rankin's "Tonight Show appearances in the early 70's and always enjoyed them immensely. I recently purchased my first DVD player and along with it purchased the Kenny Rankin DVD which was a reintroduction of Kenny's music into my life. This DVD greatly exceeded my expectations.. I seem to get more out of it from each viewing .Kenny has actually improved with age and his band was really tight( Joe Beck on lead guitar is awesome!) Last night I had my guitar instructor over to view it. He watched it in awe ( at one point he was actually choked up with emotion... WOW) and said it was the by far the best music video/ DVD that he had ever had the pleasure to watch. I strongly recommend this DVD to any music lover and for any Kenny Rankin fan it's a must!!
More than you know..........2001-10-31
I purchased both the DVD and CD and I think they are fantastic! Kenny's voice is as beautiful to me today as the first time I heard it some 20 years ago. There are not many vocalists who can maintain their clarity and strength of tone, but Kenny most certainly does, his voice remains pure and unspoiled, his range goes from here to eternity with what appears to be the greatest of ease. The addition of musicians only helps to showcase Kenny's amazing and unique talent. The enjoyment he shares with those on stage with him only shows too well by the smile on his face. If you've never had the pleasure of seeing/hearing him perform, then this is the DVD/Video/CD for you! His voice is truly a gift and you'd be cheating yourself not to check him out. I've been a lover of his music for a long time and I can tell you this, Kenny's work is timeless. No matter how much you've heard his music or seen him perform live, it's never the same thing twice and always a joy to experience. A talent like his does not come along often, so go on, be good to yourelf, go get it and indulge your senses, you'll be so glad you did!
Haven't We Met Album.......2001-10-25
I have the video of his latest concert. This cd is NOT the soundtrack from the BET video. This is a distinct and separate concert. In the BET video he was solo. In this concert he has the wonderful guitarist Joe Beck playing with him. He is also supported by a very talented pianist and bass player. When they play together you can see the instinctive cooperation in their performance. In addition, he has added a string quartet that provides a richness and sensuality that was not present on the BET video. Kenny Rankin has become a graceful and mature musician and it shows in the presentation of his music. I have been a fan of Kenny Rankin's since I was 19. He has a voice that is distinctive with its range and richness. I recommend that anyone who buys this album should also buy the video. It is a wonderful concert video and now I am grateful that I can also play the cd anytime I like.

Customer Reviews:
from a musician, about a musician.......2000-03-12
When I first heard this cd, it was after seeing her perform in Frostburg, MD. I have since had the pleasure to perform with her occasionally, and I can truthfully say that this is one of the rare times when the recording is just as honest as a live performance. I would definately recomend this album to any jazz afficionado who has a dicerning ear. Brilliant performance! And perfect execution!
Uninspiring.........1999-08-09
Dianne Hubka has a nice tonal quality in her voice and she is a competent singer, but her renditions of these popular tunes are less than inspiring. There is no heart or soul in this CD.
Diane Hubka's debut album is superb!.......1999-06-22
This album is absolutely delightful. Ms. Hubka has a beautiful voice, sure of pitch and timbre. She sings with a sincerity that draws you into a lush, romantic world of expression. She caresses the lyric but never overdramatizes, maintaining a consistent sense of swing, throughout. I cannot think of any other singer to compare her to, she is really quite unique. Just as a friend played her album for me and thus motivated me to purchase it, I feel certain that anyone who appreciates good singing and great songs will love this album. She also gives ample space to her sidemen, including one of the best guitarists in jazz, John Hart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Some great songs - Some great singing/swinging!!.......1999-05-15
Diane Hubka is marvelous in this CD of terrific tunes. It's a great CD of relaxing jazz that can set the mood for an evening to remember. Diane never overwhelms with vocal technique, but she's accomplished and sure of herself at all times. And her taste in lesser-known songs is refreshing and exciting!!
"Haven't We Met?" is a CD that is pleasant and honest........1998-12-02
Not a clone of anyone, Diane Hubka combines an enthusiasm for the singers of jazz's Cool School (especially Chris Connor and June Christy) with traces of Annie Ross and Sheila Jordan on the tasteful Haven't We Met?. But while Jordan can be aggressive at times, Hubka is a vocalist who thrives on restraint. Not a belter, the Maryland native swings in a relaxed, subtle fashion on tasteful, good-natured interpretations of material ranging from "Alone Together" and "Lazy Afternoon" (which is especially Connor-minded) to Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Favela." To her credit, Hubka doesn't limit her repertoire to obvious choices. "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" hardly falls into the warhorse category, and Johnny Carisi's "Israel" (for which she embraces lyrics by Ray Passman) hasn't been done to death by singers. Joined by alto saxman Lee Konitz (a logical choice given his Cool School membership), pianist Frank Kimbrough, guitarist John Hart, bassist Harvie Swartz and drummer Ron Vincent, Hubka makes "Haven't We Met?" a CD that is pleasant and honest.
